What are some good resources about to achieve a faster boot time with X220
I have it at around 13 seconds from cold pressing into arch x, but I feel it could be faster.

I call bullshit. This was the main reason I bought a Thinkpad six years ago (which I still use as my laptop), but the keyboard really isn't that great.

The main problem is that a button press simply doesn't register if it's short enough, so it's literally impossible to exceed a certain typing speed. I can reproduce this perfectly -- if I press the keys fast enough, they fail to register with almost 100% certainty, even though I depress them to the bottom.

We constantly recommend the T420. I'm using one right now, have been for over a year now thanks to recommendations here. It's a very solid machine, but we really need to know your goals and budget.

what requirements do you have besides storage? these machines generally don't have decent 1080p screens until the T440 which ramps the price up substantially. The T420's best screen is a 1600x900 TN panel which has pretty abysmal viewing angles, but is sufficient if that's not a huge deal to you.

The T420 can be had for maybe $150-200 based on options. If you're after storage, you'd then replace the DVD drive with a hard drive caddy and an HDD, giving you two hard drives. The T420 also has an MSATA slot. you could install an MSATA drive (a small SSD card) and migrate your OS to it, and then swap out the original HDD for another large storage drive, and have several terabytes of storage all in one machine.

So my x220 started overheating a lot lately, I decided to for the first time ever disassemle it and clean the fans and reapply the thermal paste.

I did it using lenovos manual, but I'm pretty sure I fucked it up big time on multiple accounts.

First of all, I left out a screw, but no idea where, definetly not from the heatsink parts though. Second I used some shoddy chink thermal paste that was kind of dried in. Didn't want to use it but didn't have a choice because I needed to leave soon.

Now it's overheating again, it seemed better at first, but the overheating problem only appears on windows, when I use arch it doesn't overheat at all when watching videos or doing stuff, which is weird. I think because of the mesa drivers linux isn't really using the gpu and windows uses it more and that's where it overheats.

What should I do? Buy new non shit thermal paste and reapply? Does it even matter what kind of thermal paste you use?

You actually don't want to do that, the faster the CPU is running the faster it gets the job done and the faster it can go back to super low power states. I.e just let the Intel P-state driver do the cpu frequency governing, and if you need to limit the heat generation then use powerclamp (with thermald preferably) to force it to stay at those super low power states certain % of the time.

I think I've reached a pseudo-midlife crisis.

I want to sell my T520.

At it's height, it was just a good occasional typing and diagnostic machine.

I love it very much and have enjoyed using it a lot. But I've come to a point where I don't use it nearly as much and have been using it less and less as time goes by.

I do all my real work, and occasional gaming, on my custom PC. It's been on my desk for almost two months with no use, except when I clean or dust to move it out of the way.

Should I sell it? My heart wants to keep it but my mind wants to sell it while it still has a decent resale value.

Hey guys. Got a quick question.

So I got an ultrabay battery for my T420s. Works pretty good. I can now get between two and four hours on battery, depending on how hard I use it. I could probably push it to five if I only do really light internet use and turn the screen brightness down.

My only problem is pic related. It won't charge completely unless I reboot the laptop. I have TLP installed, but none of the battery options are enabled.

What would cause this? I'm running Fedora 23.

Been thinking about buying an X220. Newegg has them for 215.99 USD, are there any reservations in buying at that price/from Newegg?

Its specific to the Ivy Bridge ThinkPads so yeah, I think its legit, at least a legit recell, which is nice.

Any place to get 9 cell battery for t420s? I only see 6 cells going on ebay which would be more than fine but I'd like the option.

Also, will a t420 labeled battery work in the s-for-speshul model?

I think the 6 cell is the extended battery for the T420S variant.
and no I don't think that a normal t420 battery will fit in a T420S since its a lot thinner.

The laptops are fairly old and I wouldn't want the seller to charge me for a new battery. A fucky battery means it's usually cheaper.

I like the T520's keyboard the best, but eventually it will be too slow to handle modern bullshit. Maybe not next year, but in a few years.
