Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Hello friends.
Have you yet tried the system of operation Astra Linux?
It is in my opinion as secure as armor of tank from Uralvagonzavod, precise in execution of user command like rifle from Cnitochmash and of beautiful interface to traverse which is like you ride a horse in early morning hour through a polyana or a birch tree grove.

Yes, by delaying them. All packages, not just the ones which "break".
I wish I was smarter and with a bigger vocabulary, so I could explain how stupid those derivative distributions are.
>>
>>55376586
It doesn't only delay them, it also provides patches for things that Arch users need to do manually.

>>55376547
We have things such as antergos for that easy install

Antergos or other distros based on arch do this

Updates are delayed
They just wait till almost all problems are solved until they push all updates

Friendly reminder for the manjaro users that take this negatively that I am not hating on manjaro

There's something called net-install. Just because a package is installed, doesn't mean it's "loaded".

You're totally a long-term, authentic Gentoo user.
>>
>>55377368

You don't know what you want. All you did was mention some buzzwords like "light" and "not complex". People suggested you distributions like that and you dismissed it, because it doesn't fit your ridiculous and idiotic buzzword demands.
What you want doesn't exist. The suggested distributions, which are non-derivative, can be all that. They can be whatever you configure them to. Good luck finding your shitty, derivative niche distribution which just happens to fit your retarded demands.

Hi peeps
I have been using Manjaro on my laptop since 2 months now. I have been loving it, it's running greatly on a single core CPU with 3gigs of ram.

I want to go linux on my desktop but I don't really know what to use to replace my adobe software for video and image editing.

I have been trying Gimp for basic image editing, I can roll with it.
I don't really like Inkscape for vetorial edition, if someone know a good alternative, I will be thankful.
My real concern is the video editing software. Again if someone has an idea, I would be thankful again.

im trying to set up a samba share on ubuntu server. i want it to broadcast the shares so that all windows pcs on the network can just click network and open them up. i went through this simple guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How%20to%20Create%20a%20Network%20Share%20Via%20Samba%20Via%20CLI%20(Command-line%20interface/Linux%20Terminal)%20-%20Uncomplicated,%20Simple%20and%20Brief%20Way! and it was working fine.

then i changed permissions on some stuff and i can't browse to them any more, but i can access them by typing in the ip

what are the things i need to check to be able to browse to the folders without typing in an ip? i already restored the smb.conf to default and added just the lines in that guide back but i still cant see it and get to it without typing in the path

I began my Linux experience with Ubuntu 14.04, and after learning a bit, switched to Arch (i686 on an older PC). I got sick of having so much power with Arch, I could never get anything done besides tweak my setup, so I decided to boot back into Ubuntu, and it's dreadful.

Unity/Nautilus are awful and I can't do ANYTHING because it's trying to protect me from myself like a fucking Windows user. I can't install a bitmap font, I can't even download fucking emacs packages without going through and editing my permissions.

I'm looking for a distro that's a happy medium: geared more towards experienced users but not so much so that I'm going to spend most of my time setting up my window manager.

I was thinking about Debian or maybe Fedora. I don't know much about OpenSUSE. What do you think /fglt/?

Alright so I just recently switched over from Win7 to Ubuntu. Really liking things so far, not as difficult to get in to as people made it sound. The only thing that I would like to do is add a Properties bar to the bottom of the file manager like there is in Windows 7. For example the bar that shows the properties of an image, it's dimensions, date modified, created, etc..)

Is this possible?

Even if I have my TV completely powered off (unplugged), Linux still detects it sometimes and there's an invisible 'screen' off to the side, on the Login screen, and whenever I need to use a Live CD.

Is there any way to get it to stop, without unplugging the hdmi cable every time?

Not with Nautilus (Unity's file manager). I know that neither Thunar nor Nemo can do that. Your best bet would be Dolphin (KDE's file manager). You can install it and see for yourself.

I have an NFS share that I mount on my desktop and laptop (everything is Fedora 23). When the file server gets shut down it totally borks the computers connected to it. I can't access my home folder, and when I try to shut down it hangs.

Is this just a problem with NFS? Is there a way to stop this apart from manually dis-mounting the NFS share on each connected system?

No, because there's no clear, objective definition of "important".
Rolling release distributions work fine, without any issues. Stable, fixed release distributions works fine without any issues. You are asking for something between which has the worst of both sides without the benefits of each.
Chances are that using either of those wouldn't even affect you, but you have a weird misconception about it and you think it will somehow affect you.

Should work unless the software detects it's in a VM and refuses to work, but unlikely for a game to care about that.

like, could i do it if i closed X and unloaded the video driver module before running the VM? (doing so would still be more convenient than restarting to run solidworks for me)

>create /home/shared

>make that directory from above owned by you and the "share" group
>use acl to make a file created in that directory owned by the "share" group

Also give the /home/shared directory 775 rights.

This thread is still alive? I guess it's true, GNU autists really are killing our Linux community. We used to cycle through these threads at least a couple times a day, for shame, faggots, for shame.

Why? Then the members of the group "share" won't be able to access the directory at all.

how do I make my terminal look like this? nevermind the background or window manager. Just the ascii art logo and stats at the top when I open a new terminal.

You'll realize how stupid that is 5 minutes after you set it up. The only reason to have it that way is if you have Alzheimer's and you for some reason need to always know what GTK theme you're using.

I am going to write an infographic about this
Start a terminal on the ssh server and install openssh-server
$ sudo apt-get install openssh-server

Make a backup of vanilla configs
sudo cp /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.original && sudo chmod a-w /etc/ssh/sshd_config.original

Recommendations.
1. Change default port from 22 to a random number ie 6990
2. Keep rootpermit and x11 forwarding off at this moment
$ sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

3. MUST: Allow users (users that are defined in the server machine)
$ sudo echo "AllowUsers YOURUSERNAMEGOESHERE" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Start ssh server
$sudo systemctl restart sshd.service
$sudo systemctl enable sshd.service -f

Of course. But you have to have a proper set of hardware to actually run a free distro

yes, but if you're a complete beginner, choose a more beginner friendly distro.

Everytime I read questions like that I die inside a little.

Now open your another pc and type
$sudo apt install openssh-client

Now if you want to access your ssh server from a terminal you would:
$ssh -p YOURASSIGNEDPORTNUMBER SSHSERVERUSERNAME@IP

If you don't know the IP of your ssh server, open up a terminal there and type
$ip addr
. Find the wireless IP, should be something like 192.168.X.X

Now I recommend you install gigolo. Start gigolo and the rest is pretty much point click. Add a bookmark and the sftp server is now mounted on your File explorer.

yes, but keep in mind its still in development so you're probably have some work to do, don't expect it to "just werk"

So I've been thinking of trying Manjaro, since I'm interested in arch and the rolling release philosophy. (Currently been using Xubuntu, and I HATE the way distro updates are handled with how often they go through a major change.)

It seems that a lot of complaints with it however are the way they hold back packages on EVERYTHING, so I'm wondering if it gets frustrating or if it's all just a bunch of hot smoke

Hey guys, maybe you are able to help me with a strange problem I have.
So on a server of mine I have a network share. The share is an .img with a filesystem inside to limit available storage space to a defined number. I mount said .img regularly with the loop option.

Now it is that it seems that it gets somehow unmounted. It's mounted when I check after setting it up, but a few hours later it's gone.
how is that, and where can I see the logs relevant to this?

How can I read the text which flashes up on tty while resuming from sleep? Sometimes when resuming from sleep my internet connection fails to connect until reboot, and when this occurs I see some text on a black screen after resuming for half a second before all my GUI windows and shit appears.

Hoping I can find the issue for it not reconnecting in that text
>>
>>55398539
yeah, sure, let's go with that if it makes you happy.

Do you know how to allow for non-alphanumeric characters in the hostname?
>>
>>55398062
manjaro has three different branches
stable testing and unstable
unstable branch syncs 24h with arch
testing is where packages are holded for testing
however, not all are tested, mostly the core packages
if they've been shown to have no issues, the go to stable

I'll try and be more civil in my response, unlike the above anons. This is 'friendly' GNU/Linux thread after all.

>I have a thinkpad I'm ready to boot it on

OK, but you need to make sure your Thinkpad is compatible with the linux-libre kernel. If it's anything from the past 5~ years, it mostly likely won't work without installing binary blobs for either GPU or CPU. So, unless you bought a T400, X60 or T62 or something along those lines, you're going to have issues booting.

>I've installed arch before and I know the basics of compiling, would I be fine?

Sure, Parabola isn't much different from Arch. The main difference is that they incorporate libre packages only, and thus is more free. But like I said above, hardware compatibility is an issue in many cases.

>I apologize I've never written a line of code in my life so sorry for the dumb question.

Any language will work on any computer, given that you have the proper utilities. C can be compiled on Linux with the gcc, python can be interpreted with the python interpreter, etc.
