What's your anon's opinion on matrix keyboards? Are they a meme?

Also, how hard is it to transition to a keyboard like picrelated (Terminus Mini)? It only has 46 keys, insanity.

Appreciate the help. Looks decent. I'm considering this more than the Tesoro one, as I think Tactile switches would be better for writing a lot

I'm losing hope for a wireless keyboard. It seems all the good ones are wired only.

I'm not sure what else than mx-style switches you're going to put them on.

I have them on my clears, and they do dampen the sound a fair bit. I don't mind the different feel, but YMMV.

This.

I was choosing between making my own with zealios and a Topre board at the time, after spending about 30 bucks in order to get my hands on both of the switches in question, I opted for the 220 bucks Topre board.

Nothing wrong with making a minor investment in order to make a good decision on a larger investment.

Finding some detailed info or even clear photos of cheap keyboards isn't always easy, but you went above in beyond for that keyboard. Made my choice easier.
>>
>>55227354
why not? I own them and I love them to bits
>>
>>55227621
Partly because a lot of the sets have that 'nano anti-biosis' meme, but mostly because they are so thin. For the same price, or lower in many cases, you could get really nice gateron thick pbt.
>>
>>55226579
yeah not having half the keys. weird
>>
Every time I restart my computer or wake it up from sleep mode, the LEDs in my keyboard (varmilo va87mr) reset themselves to the fullest brightness. I can deal with turning them back down all the time, but i was wondering if this was a common problem or if anyone has a solution that isn't busting it open and removing them completely.
>>
>>55227702
yes, that set has the weird antibacterial coating. it didn't bother me but I removed it anyway just because I was bored one day. it's really easy. just dip each key in some rubbing alcohol and wipe the gunk off with a rag.
it is true what you say about how thin they are. I got them anyway because I really really like the colors and I couldn't find anything else quite like them at the time.

depends on what keyboards you've used. I remember when we got new HP workstations in the lab at uni, I sat down to login and immediately noticed the feel of the new keyboards. It felt like I'd expect my old noname rubberdome would feel after pouring coffee on it. With lots of sugar. And cream. When I pointed the new keyboards out to my classmate, she said "oh, yeah, these new keyboards are really nice!"

Kinda surprised given how big the variety in mice is, there's something decent for every budget.
>>

to be fair, it's the same thing with mice really - either it has a perfect sensor or it doesn't.

the closest you can get to an inbetween for keyboards are cheap chink boards with cherry clones that cost the same as expensive rubber domes.

Not really, there's a lot to chose from between cheap office mice and stuff with like S3988/ PMW3310/ PMW3366 "perfect" sensors. Just a bit annoying because you really have to look for reviews to see whether the implementation is any good.

Anyway, I think I'll try a hybrid keyboard(it's a gimmick but they're not really more expensive than plain rubberdome) for now until I'm done saving for a new PC and can afford to put some money towards a mechanical one.

Been using Cherry MX Blacks, they're a lot lighter than I expected. Often I don't notice the resistance at all.

Still, I want to get redpilled on MX Reds as part of switching to a PS/2 keyboard, as MX Blacks are often hated (I have no frame of reference to other Cherry switches to understand), but the only way of doing so for me is to order the board and wait till it arrives. I'd test the hell out of it if I could find anything, but I live in a godforsaken place on the fringe of civilization.

What's the cheapest way get a "case" for a custom keyboard?

I'm trying to figure out what will hold the switches together.
PCB printing of that size isn't cheap at all, so just PCB mounting the switches is out of the question.
Custom cut acrylic isn't much cheaper either, but you can get 2 plates of 60% keyboard size for 25$.

Are there any cheap ghetto ways of doing this myself? Something better than cardboard, though.

You'll either need a PCB, or preferably a metal plate to hold the switches.

Casings can be made from all kinds of materials. Wood and plastic aren't expensive at all.

See if you can get some wood or acrylic or metal laser cut somewhere. The guy who helped me the minimized AEK II got the metal plates cut for 22 bucks a pop.

You could try to drill holes yourself with a round drill that just about fits the corners of the switches. Not exactly optimal and having them all aligned properly would be a horrible autismfest, but that's the best I can think of if you don't want to pay someone to do some proper cutting for you.

They look plenty big enough but I'm curious how much resistance a cherry ctrl key would put up compared to a (what I assume is) rubber key.
>>
>>55241549
There's switches with different weights and feels to them. You can get a really light one if you like (cherry reds or gateron clears)
>>
In the market for a new keyboard, I'm thinking the Ducky One or Ducky Shine 5. I'm just not sure about the type of switches I should get. I'll be mainly using it for gaming and some casual web dev.
>>
So is there a reason NOT to buy this:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/l/32653111593.html
?

Is there anywhere I could find a review or anything?
>>
>>55241688
Yeah, there are basically no reviews for chinese keyboards.
The best you've got is reviews on the product page itself. Those are legit, so they are worth looking at for at least some information.

I'll be getting this keyboard soon, so I guess expect a review in a month or two.

otemu switches when many gateron boards are of similar price on ali
>>
>>55241750
What? That board has Gaterons, I'm pretty sure.
>>
>>55241750
>>55241768
Oh, I think it's Gateron if you choose Black switches. At least that's what a few reviews say.
>>
>>55241750
If you have a suggestion at ~$40 or under with gateron switches I'm all ears, maybe I can't find them because I've never used aliexpress before or something.

At $35 this one seems like a steal.
>>
>>55227451
is this going to be time limited or will they send it in batches over a long period of time?
>>
>>55241768
>>55241787

well if it's true for the blacks, that's definitely a good board then. I just saw the huge otemu in title and description.

Shopping around for a new keyboard because my Ducky Shine 3 is dead. Does Corsair make usable mechanical keyboards? What about daskeyboards?

I've been looking in to mechanical keyboards the past few days and I was wondering, is it best looking for a kit to build myself, or customising a pre-made one?
>>
>>55242314

that depends on how much work you want to put in. boards like the Zhuque have swappable switches that easily come out, but most others require full desoldering.

a full custom kit would be many, many more hours than either of those, but you have more switch, plate, and case options.
>>
>>55242314
There's a pretty obvious answer here, it's the one that requires a magnitude more hours of work.
>>
>>55242366
I was thinking just a simple 60% keyboard with cherry MX blues. I was thinking as it will be my first just customising a pre-made one. Any suggestions where I could start looking?
>>
>>55242399
>customising a pre-made one
What do you mean? Changing keycaps?
Because changing keycaps is a routine thing, doesn't really count as customization.
>>
>>55242399

I don't know of any hotswappable 60% boards that aren't from random GH group buys.

you could get something like the Pok3r or KBP V60, and sell the stock keycaps since you're likely going to use your own. get the switches from aliexpress/taobao, or an older donor board if you can find one reasonably (dolch pac, chryon)
>>
>>55242453
Yeah that's what I mean, I am pretty new to the mechanical keyboard scene, sorry.
>>
>>55242526
Well, changing keycaps is a fine way to get into this stuff, but if (or when) you want anything deeper, you're out of luck with a regular board, since most customization comes from switches and firmware, none of which you'll be able change.

But if you're new, I can't honestly recommend something you have to solder together yourself.

Just find a mechanical keyboard that suits you at your price point and see if it grows on you.
>>
>>55242583
Well I already have a mechanical keyboard, but it is a corsair gaming one and it's 100%, but I want something smaller and I heard that the keys on a corsair keyboard have a slightly different size so it's awkward to find keycaps.

>tfw V80 matias quiet click finally arrives

Am I crazy for saying I like it more than Topre? The tactility is the best out of all quiet tactile switches I've tried. And it strangely feels lighter than 55g Topre (which is actually also 60g in real life measurements).

My only complaint is that it's not as smooth as Topre. Past the initial bump, it feels like there's some residual bump near the bottom out. Any explanation for that?
>>
How do O-rings reduce travel time? Wouldn't not pressing the key completely not trigger it?
>>
>>55242729

not at all, I much prefer non-rubber dome switches
>>
>>55242746
They reduce travel distance past the actuation. Unless they're so thick that you can't even actuate the key, in which case you're doing something wrong.

Does there exist a CM Novatouch in ISO layout?
I want to try out topre, but I want to have cherry compatible stems, so the Novatouch seems like the only option. And ISO is a must.

>I hate corus kb
Everyone does.
They didn't even reply to any of my paypal disputes or emails or facebook messages etc. after 3 months of no sign of my keycaps. So I ended up getting a refund from paypal. Then like two months later they showed up. Gave them to a friend.
If they had even tried in the slightest to communicate with me, I would have sent them back. Another time a set of keycaps were sent to me twice, but I sent the second set back because the people had been great at replying to my messages beforehand.

Fuck corus kb, don't give them business.
>>
>>55243463
Sure, no problem.

Photos are going to be shit though because I'm not just cheap when it comes to keyboards, but everything else too, so all I have is an entry level digital camera from like a decade ago.

Ya fucked up, all corsairs have non-standard bottom rows. You won't ever find new keycaps without having to spend extra for weird custom sets.
>>
>>55242729

I think it probably has something to do with the rubber. The click version does not suffer from it. I got to try out the quiet clicks and realized I wasn't a fan right away just like the original ALPS they are mimicking.
>>
>>55237844

You should. It will probably go up in value. Its probably worth about $100 too.

Are there any places with good split mechanical keyboards? A datahand is out of the question price wise, but my existing keyboard (a replacement for one that randomly had half the keys die) is extremely unpleasant to type on, and due to recently somewhat fucking up my hand, something in two pieces that I can angle and move around would be really useful.
