Ask your simple questions here.

Got a Linux-specific question? Search "flt" in the catalog, or go to https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/flt (wait 15-20 minutes after asking your question)

Admittedly Razer is pretty bad, but honestly they've been getting pretty good in the past few months with that open source VR shit. Haven't been following the company a whole lot though, so I don't know much about the company as a whole other than that they make gaming products.

Shit, yeah. Well, depends what kind of gaming you'll be doing. The XPS 15 has a 960M graphics chip, which is decent. What are you exactly planning to run?

Did it disconnect when the cat knocked it down? When the white light goes off, does the disk still appear on the computer?

I see 3 possibilities:

A. Hardware is fine, filesystem got damaged from the surprised disconnect when the cat knocked it down. Chkdsk would fix this.

B. The SATA/USB adapter part in the disk is damaged, but the drive is fine. If you open it up and remove the drive, and attach it to a SATA-to-USB adapter or put it into a new enclosure, it will work again.

C. Drive is damaged. Basically you're fucked. You can look into professional data recovery, but that costs a fair deal.

Last question folks.

I'm getting confused by the different versions of the 730 card.
GDDR5 or DDR3?
64 bit or 128 bit?

Here's a GDDR I found that's in stock:
https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GeForce-OC-Profile-N730K-2GD5LP/dp/B00R2M10SU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466550746&sr=8-2&keywords=EVGA+GeForce+GT+730+2GB+GDDR5

And I've also been considered the different options for the EVGA 730 that I linked before:

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Profile-Graphics-02G-P3-1733-KR/dp/B00LJZQEV4/ref=sr_1_26?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1466549423&sr=1-26&keywords=Nvidia+GeForce

GDDR3 or 5, doesn't really matter, just as long as it's NOT regular DDR3.

And the bit width dosn't really matter either since the memory isn't going to bottle neck a GPU of it's speed.

Not particularly, but you aren't going to get much power out of the computer for $300. You're going to be able to play puzzle games, indies, and old school runescape. The better a system you get, the better you'll be able to run said programs, and $300 isn't exactly a lot for a computer. It's really far into the cheap end. You're going to get a pos consumer grade laptop for that price, even with a lit of research and tech know-how on your end.

I've noticed that whenever my mouse needs to be replaced, it's always a problem with the left mouse button, and it's always one of two problems: either (1) it doesn't always register a click or (2) it sometimes registers a double click with a single press.

Is this something easily repairable at home or should I just keep buying replacement mice?

Not a new *cable*, a new HDD enclosure. Open up the plastic case around the USB HDD. Inside you should find a normal desktop or laptop HDD, and a board that plugs into its SATA plug and has a USB socket. That's the board that I suspect is bad. Many USB HDDs have shitty ones and they die all the time.

Get a new USB SATA enclosure off Newegg or wherever. Look at reviews and choose one people have had good experiences with. Some of them die more often and some are slow. There are reliable and fast ones out there.

This isn't a guarantee of course -- the USB wire or the drive itself may still be bad. Converter boards and USB wires are pretty cheap and easy to replace. The drive itself is not.

Hey /g/ I have a problem. I just finished installing windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on an Asus laptop and I realized I miss a lot of drivers (pic related) so I figured I'd download internet driver from my other PC, then all the others from this laptop. So I went on asus website, downloaded correct w-lan driver, moved to usb stick, and then laptop couldnt recognize usb stick, i tried all my usb sticks in all my 3 usb port but nothing. How do i make my win 7 operational /g/ ?

When I try to install Windows in the 1TB disk it says that it has to copy some files to the 2TB disk, and that it can't do it because it isn't a Windows supported filesystem. How do I change it so it installs on it's own HDD instead of trying to hijack the other one?

Will I be forced to make a tiny ntfs partition in the 2TB disk just so Windows can install properly in the other one? I'm on a GParted live CD please help.

Not him, but if you repeatedly buy the $5-20 ones, you always end up with shit quality wire and it wears out like that. Buy high quality headphones and the wire will be high quality and last a really long time.

...and then there's the dollar store earbuds. The wire on those seems to be designed to last only a little longer than the disappointment caused by the sound quality. And one of the speakers probably doesn't work either, because what did you expect for $1.

I have a 2012 laptop with an AMD A-6 apu in it, cost like $325 or some shit. It's running 110-120celcius on the cpu.

>>
>>55199661
Right click the program you want and choose "Pin to taskbar"
>>
>>55199627
Sounds like bad thermal paste. Also do clean the heatsinks more thoroughly. I've seen cases where the fans look clear and nothing comes out when blasted with canned air, but there's a mat of dust right behind the heatsink fins so the air can't actually get through very well. It looks almost like a little air filter.

Also I know some chips have had issues where they basically run hotter and hotter until they cook themselves, due to poor connections with bonding wires. Dunno if the A-6 had anything like this.

If you're trying to desolder more than 2 contacts at once I'd invest in a cheap solder sucker, they can be like $3 from eBay. While you're at it invest in a little flux, it'll make the whole process of soldering a hell of a lot easier.

To detach the switch properly heat the lead on the other side of the board and not the solder until the solder melts, suck out with a solder sucker and move on. After that you should end up with a board you can just drop a switch onto, add some flux to the pins on the new switch once it's in the board and add solder.

Assuming they're competent, it's likely the defective chip thing I mentioned. At least with the Nvidia ones, the issue was the bonding wires connecting the silicon to the pins
/pads on the chip. The wires were attached using bad lead-free solder, which weakens and cracks over time from thermal cycles. The weakened solder conducts more poorly and generates more heat, damaging it more quickly. Eventually it just dies.

Some people have had luck heating the chips using an oven or heat gun. It's not a permanent fix, but it makes it work right again at least for a time. It works by melting or at least softening the solder and making it conduct a bit better.

>Surprisingly they didn't mention thermal paste.
And if they're totally incompetent, they may have pulled the heatsink off the chip and stuck it back on without cleaning off the old paste or putting on new...

I haven't worked out the bias calculations yet but would this general design be good for a low power portable headphone amplifier designed for 16-64 ohm headphones?

The common source amplifier stage provides a small amount of voltage gain to take a roughly 100-400mV audio signal up to around 1.7V or so. From there it'll go into a Darlington pair emitter follower with large current gain to drive up to 30mA of current to the headphones.

The circuit will need to be duplicated for stereo channels and I'll add a pot for volume control at some point as well. I was going to run this off 2 AA batteries initially but the 2000mAh capacity seems kind of shit so maybe a low voltage lithium ion battery would be better.

I have a weird issue with my dualshock 4

On windows, I'm able to get it to work over bluetooth, but it won't connect over usb.
On linux, I have the oppopsite problem, it works over usb but not bluetooth.

On windows, it shows up in device manager under libusb-win32 Usb Devices, as wireless controller, but makes no other signs of connection (lightbar shows up with the orange charging color).
On linux, it seems to connect fine, making the same blue connection color on the lightbar as usb, but none of the buttons work (though a controller does seem to be detected).

Anyone have any idea how to fix either issue? I know it worked over usb on windows at some point

I use a HAF XB case, when I first installed windows and used the hot swap hard drive bay everything was fine.

recently when I plugged a drive in it just corrupted windows, something about an error on an .exe, I tried my windows USB but no repair option.

it happened before as well with a new hard drive, but when I got a replacement hard drive no issues.

it's incredibly sporadic when it happens, but I don't see how plugging in a drive would casuse windows to become corrupt on the next boot up, even selecting my SSD directly didn't boot into windows, and then for a few boots no drives were detected

guess I could finally try out GNU/linux again after I back up my data though, need to try doing a GPU passthrough

Are these sub-$100 480 GB SSD worth it?

I usually buy Crucial or Samsung, but this time I'm a little tight on budget.

Performance not really a concern, most SSD are fast enough for me these days.
I'm more concerned with the thing dying on me randomly.
>>
>>55200537
No.

If you need the cheapest SSD possible get an ADATA SP550 or a Sandisk SSD Plus.

PNY is horrible for SSDs.
Never heard of silicon power about SSDs.
OCZ makes low quality SSDs but they are "acceptable".

If you want reliability just get a 850 EVO.
>>
>>55200411
It may or may not work. It will *not* be activated. If it's an OEM Windows, you'll either need to buy a new license or pirate it. If it's a retail Windows you can either reactivate or do the phone activation thing where you talk to a robot.

As for it actually working at all, it depends. If one computer's SATA is in IDE mode and the other is in AHCI mode, it won't work unless you apply the registry patch just before moving it, so it rescans next boot. But I've successfully moved a Windows 7 HDD from an HP laptop with AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU to a Dell laptop with Intel CPU and GPU. It booted up fine, though I had to install various drivers to get everything working reasonably.

OSX used to be a lot more usable than it is today. Also the UNIXy command line utilities on it are nice and infinitely better than the Windows command line, but it still leaves you wishing for proper GNU tools now and then. Stuff like little differences in command line options or missing or different features. Then there's stuff like when you go to install a small library in Macports and it tries to pull in and compile a whole GCC toolchain a couple minor release numbers away from one you already have.

Of course if you don't know computers and want something that will just work and let you get on Facebook or Xcode, OSX is great.

What can I say. Welcome to the world of Windows.

If you want it to just work but then periodically just break, use Windows.

If you want to put some effort into getting everything to work right, but have it stay that way once set up, use Linux.

>But 10Gb/s?
Is enough for me. I don't do huge file transfers all that often, the main benefit would be gaming. I already barely have load screens on my regular 2.5" sata SSD, I don't need to spend the extra money for a PCIe m.2 SSD when I'd mainly be moving to it for cable management reasons. Of course if I upgrade in two years, PCIe m.2 SSDs might be cheap enough that I'll get one just to be future proof.

Nowhere else to ask this. I'm setting up an old PC in a closet upstairs with a single drive I will use to store media on locally. It can only use wireless connection unfortunately, I'm not overly worried about speeds.

What are my best options for doing this? The most simple way would obviously be to just map the drive and open it to the network. Open to using any OS but I'm actually setting this up for my mother so the end user should basically be able to drag and drop.

So the whole point of that guy's video is that Apple is good for non "power users", but horrible for power users? That seems kinda weird if developers also use macs. I think a lot of the reason developers use macbooks on top of what you already said is that they have higher DPI screens which weren't common on PCs for a while and developers spend a lot of time looking at text, so a higher resolution screen is appreciated. I'm not a developer, that's just what I've heard, so I could be talking out my ass.

I have a question on recording audio.

A while ago I got a tascam dr07 to record commentary for fighting game tournaments.

my question is what recording settings should i be working with? This thing supports 24bit 96khz wav files but I can only record 1 hour on the 4gb card it came with. My understanding on 24bit vs 16bit audio is that difference is incredibly minimal, as is 48khz vs 96khz, especially if I'm uploading to youtube.

Should I record in 24bit 48khz? 16bit 96khz? Does recording in higher settings allow me more room to boost volume later?

>good for non "power users", but horrible for power users
Basically yes. And believe it or not, not all devs are power users. As a dev, power user and tinkerer/hobbyist, I rather expected that other devs would generally be more familiar with how computers work, OS internals, how to fix basic problems when things go wrong, etc. But some devs do seem to be as bad as any lusers.

>higher DPI screens which weren't common on PCs for a while and developers spend a lot of time looking at text, so a higher resolution screen is appreciated
When I'm programming I frankly don't give a shit whether fonts look as smooth as print, rendered on a lower DPI screen with ClearType, or look like the sharp pixellated blobs we had in the 90s. If I can set the font, have syntax coloring, have things be clear and readable, and have enough space on the screen to work comfortably with things at a reasonable size, I'm happy. Of course when I stop programming and want to watch a movie or play a game, I do want a nice screen.

Keyboard and mouse/touchpad/trackpoint make a bigger difference for programming. Mac touchpads are generally really nice, though some of the more recent PC ones have been great too. And Mac keyboards have generally been really good, though I can barely stand the near zero key travel on the new ones. Feels almost like they're trying to replicate the tapping-on-glass iPad touch keyboard experience.

>>
>>55201457
As >>55201477 said, 16/44k (CD quality) is fine for speech. If you record with higher settings you potentially have more quality headroom to work with in processing before it's noticeable.

Higher settings don't help much on boosting the volume later, unless you have a god tier mic. You'll run into accurately recorded noise long before you run into the limits of 16 bits.

I'd still be inclined to use higher settings and get a 8-32 GB card, just because they're so cheap. 4 GB is tiny for an SD these days.

Any suggestions on a good media player for porn? I needs to have the following:

1) A-B Repeat
2) Good zoom/controls that allow you too zoom in close on a money shot and pan around.

KMplayer comes really close but it infested with adware and popups, does A-B repeat well with hotkeys and the zoom works via hotkeys / high zoom levels even though the performance can suffer and the increments can be finnicy when panning around.

MPC-HD has no zoom or A-B repeat at all

VLC is absolutely pathetic requiring 5000 menus to enable/disable it and it keeps an OSD element visible that never fades, it's obnoxious.

mpv is another close contender with KMPlayer having the best A-B loop but the zoom is atrocious, as far as I can tell the only zoom option is pan and scan which zooms in maybe a max of 5% and doesn't allow positioning.

It's obviously not an issue with Windows since the display is acting funky even in BIOS/boot splash, but why would the display irregularities differ between Windows screens (login/desktop)? That makes it seem like some sort of software issue?

>Sometimes when I'm recording other things I notice its kind of quiet. Am I correct in guessing I can boost the db as much as i can until its clear as long as it doesnt pop or clip on the waveform spectrum?

Ehh... The mic will pick up a lot of noise, and amplifying the signal will make the noise louder too.

I would suggest editing with a tool like Audacity. When you open its amplify tool, the default value is the max you can amplify it before it clips -- generally what you want.

Audacity also has a nice noise reducer if your noise is fairly constant, like the hiss/air sound you get from silence on a mic, etc. Select a couple seconds of audio that contains nothing but the noise and is a good example of it. Go to Effects->Noise Removal. Push the "Get Noise Profile" button to analyze the noise. Now select the whole recording, or the part you want to denoise with that profile. Effects->Noise Removal again, adjust the noise reduction slider if you want, and hit OK. Undo and turn the slider up if there's still too much noise. Undo and turn it down if it now sounds like you're talking from underwater.
