Ask your simple questions here.

Got a Linux-specific question? Search "flt" in the catalog, or go to https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/flt (wait 15-20 minutes after asking your question)

I want to have a small dedicated device for torrenting, and to be able to network the movies and music to my laptop, desktop PC, and to my TV with a roku or smart bluray player.

What is the best way to do this well without spending a fortune?

Also is there like a linux distro that would be great for this?
I cant imagine windows would be a good option for it.

I wouldn´t even know how to describe what is happening here it´s as if the compiler just ignores some parts of my code and the debugger plain jumps over it.
And i don´t get why or what is happening to it restarting my pc fixed "width"
but "item.Size.Height" still doesn´t work leading to the height be 120.
The code works perfectly fine on another computer so i doubt it´s the reason for this.
I guess that´s what i deserve for using microshit products.
Does anyone here have a clue what this could be?

What are you trying to do? Transcode a mkv/mp4 with softsubs? Encode a DVD with VOBsubs?
>>

Just trying to re encode a show that's 50gb for 20 episodes to something more reasonable.

Doesn't have to be through handbrake but I haven't really done this before.
>>
>>55203292
Well, you can do the encoding with Handbrake and then mux in the subs with mkvtoolnix GUI.

I'm starting my first build, definitely a gaming build. The only part I have right now is the case, a CM Storm Trooper.

My funds aren't titanic and I don't have a whole lot of time, so I'd like to minimize necessary expenses. Would it be better to try and find a "cheap" (at or near Founder's price) 1070? Or go for a 980 Ti and upgrade later?
>>
What do you guys use to force log into a Windows 8.1 laptop that you forgot the password to? Just recently re-imaged it a few months ago, it was originally an Windows 8, then did all the slow painful updates/troubleshooting to get 8.1 to install. But forgot the password and didn't make any recovery password disks. I can't access the command prompt from doing the Shift+Restart trick without logging in to a User account first. But I can't log into that user account until I've changed the password with an Administrator so I'm sol.

Any non-shady/non-malware methods to force it open and do a quick password change? Or am I looking at reinstalling 8.0?

Is there any point in jail breaking an Apple TV 2? I know these things used to be godly to jailbreak and use as media devices, but is it still worth it?

>>
>>55203852
>My funds aren't titanic
If you can afford a 1070, you should probably wait at least one more month to see if the new cards that are coming out are any good. Supposedly AMD's new card will be able to run at 980 TI speed at 970 price, but I'm sure AMD shills are just exaggerating. Wouldn't hurt to wait at least 7 or 8 more days until the real benchmark tests are out.

>>
>>55203870

>>
>>55203885
I'm wanting a 1070 because I could afford a 1080 but it seems like a needless amount of power for now. And I really just do not want an AMD card.

A 980 Ti would obviously be sufficient for anything I can do right now, but 1070 would last me for a long time. It's really just between the two and the prices on the 1070 right now are hardcore jewry.

How can I change this line:
var shader = gl.createShader(gl.VERTEX_SHADER);

so that VERTEX_SHADER isn't hardcoded in and it instead uses shaderType, which is a variable found using shaderScript.type ?
The problem I think is that since the type is a string, gl.shaderType is the same as saying gl."VERTEX_SHADER" which doesn't make sense.

This is Javascript by the way.

I torrent a lot of tv shows and since most of them don't put titles on their episodes (only numbers) I sometimes forget what was the last episode I watched.

What's the easiest way to bookmark this shit? I currently use the "keep the folder open and the last viewed file selected" which isn't very reliable as you can imagine.
>>
>>55202507

I saw some other poor soul struggling with a similar problem but I didn't get a chance to copy and paste the answers he was given, I was at work and everything exploded.

Basically I have a desktop I use for games, movies, shit like that, and I'd like to keep it plugged into the TV.

I have a seprate desk and computer for serious matters (and 4chan).

But this thing overscans like nobody's business. I can't watch a foreign movie because the subtitles will be off the screen, and I can't play a game because there is no hud!

All the tutorials say the same shit "turn overscan off" "set your tv to dot-by-dit/fit to size/1:1 or equivanet" but my television has none of these options.

I don't suppose there is another way? My tv is some bargain bin chink shit so that's probably why.

Hi /g/, this somewhat falls under advice but I no longer have irl friends anymore to ask, and my question is somewhat tech related.

I just opened an amazon account last night and bought 240 worth of components. This morning I wake up to discover this email message, I actually am locked out of my amazon account, I've tried changing my password twice and it keeps getting rejected.

My question - if my information gets confirmed with them, would the order automatically go through? I have been waiting to build my PC for months and at this point am just considering going to best buy to buy components in person.

I don't want to drop 200 bucks, only for the order to go through on its own later on and get charged twice over.

Secondly, if I reply to this address asking them to shut it down, do you think they would just close my account? I can't actually access amazon's own account services, because I'm unable to log in.
Please respond, I have no one else

After reading a lot about them I picked Lubuntu for my lightweight needs.

But you can just try them both and see what works better for you.

I didn't read all the specs on your computer, but it says it is good for Windows 8 so it should be more then capable of either one. It also means you should be able to run either 32 or 64 bit OS, I like 64 as it has many upsides and few downsides, but don't know how you plan to use it.

NTFS is one of the most feature-ful, most mature, fastest file system currently available. Not even kidding, just check the Wikipedia article for the FS comparison.

>>55207711
1. No?
2. Depends. You can just mount your NTFS shit, so have 20gb for "/" and I don't know, 4gb for swap. With gparted you can easily resize.
3. What.
Ubuntu/Linux can read/write NTFS, but they are not very OK with using that as root filesystem. Just use what the install offers, which is usually ext4.
You can also use ext3, then you can read and write it from Windows, but I doubt that will be necessary if you store your shit on the 7 partition for example.

PS.: ALWAYS MAKE BACKUPS. Either offline (Acronis is fucking great, trust me), or online (Crashplan).

Ok, let me spoonfeed.
1) You need a BSc.
You have to work hard for that. You have to be good at math.
2) It's easy to get a job.
But it's not a fun job. It's good paying, but you will sit on your ass for 10-12 hours doing useless shit. It's very tiring, you will also very likely to drink plenty of booze a month.

And if you ask like this, I don't think you have what it takes. I struggled years to get my BSc, and it cost me a LOT. So again, if you don't have dedication, cannot study, etc, it's not going to work.

If you have no warranty, take it apart, add a simple thin insulation between frame + panel (that does not put pressure on panel), and put it back together.

A glass or plexi glass may also work, like put a thin one on front, and call it a day.
Hope that helps.

Gentoo is ... I don't know.
It's easy to set up, just read the quick manual.

I would have two distros, one Ubuntu/Mint, and then one playground. You can use Dropbox to sync your projects anyway. And try to use the playground for work / learn - if you fuck up, you have a safe place.

I would install Debian on it for example, and upgrade to Sid, let the fun begin.

There's really no reason to switch distro unless you have a specific issue with Mint. More minimalist distros like Arch or Gentoo, despite what their adherents profess, don't reach you anything more about Linux.

If you're interested in learning more about Linux, I would recommend learning some C and picking up The Linux Programming Interface.

That's not really enough.

But then again, IF you can study, it will work. IF, and that is a huuuge IF.
There is calculus, algebra, and so much more. Programming is actually like a small part of it.

Like basically what I did is got the very basics at class (like how do you loop in C), then learn the rest from examples by prof and online.
Like it's a "forced learning" kind of thing? Because you have to practice for exam and do assignments.
Which you could do by your own, but most of us are just lazy.

For me, the biggest problem was to sit down, and take the time to actually force myself to understand the task.
Because I guess you are just like us, me, and plenty of people on the planet.
We got used to having "instant things". If I want music? I type a few letters, get Spotify.
Did I get a new mail? I just check it.
I am sure there is a name for this, like how games give the brain that sense of achievement, which is otherwise really hard to earn in real life.

Back to math.
To sit on my ass above a piece of paper with no explanation, no teacher at all, and to somehow decipher the problem... that's very hard.
There are plenty of materials online, but I shit you not, I spent a terrifying amount looking at materials, trying to use them, even doing Khan Academy... but nothing. Only practicing the course material and the prof notes helped. But fuck it was hard.

So if you know you can learn, it's gonna be fine.

But.
When I got my own server, I had to learn how to have a LAMP stack.
How to get php caching, phpmyadmin, analytics.

Was I really just unlucky or could I be doing something else wrong here? If so then should I just settle with this OC? I know the true limit is 1.45v but I don't feel terribly comfortable with going any higher than 1.35v due to temperatures.

"Adventures in Python" is fun - aimed at complete beginners to programming, but it's laid out like and adventure story that you have to code your way through, which helps get the basics in an entertaining way.

After that, just find any old online resource and you're set

The best metric for quality is usually brand, a budget model of a reliable brand like Gigabyte or Asus will be fine. Other features just depend on what you need in terms of expandability.

Variable Attenuation Control System (VACS) provides automatic control of frequency and levels to minimize distortion.

Even if you turn the volume up to a high level, the VACS feature will cause you to hear minimal distortion. This is done automatically by a circuit that was exclusively designed by Sony to maintain bass and midrange audio signals in the best quality even in high volume listening.

NOTE: VACS is an automatic feature on the device to enhance the audio playback. The feature cannot be turned on or off.

Does this negatively impact sound quality if i do not turn the amp up much?

> autostart application on system boot AS user X
> contain an "unwanted application" (you can limit resources, access, everything for a process.)

Same goes for my i7-950.

BUT, new generations usually don't get so much faster.
And if the igpu does not really matter to you, you can pick a Haswell one too, of course.
Just type in the model number and + passmark in google.

Once you narrow it down, you can do review searches on those too, like check how many FPS they achieve and stuff, but if their single core passmark score is good, they should be good at games as well.
For example the 4330 vs 6300, not so big difference.

But I found an i3 2120 and g4400 for the same price almost. The i3 is a little better in pass mark but the g4400 gives better upgradability for a better processor given the socket type. Fuck decisions

I'm starting into CS in a few months and have some questions I could do with your help anon:

1. I could do with a new laptop, what specs do you guys recommend for what I should expect?

2. Is it better to use multi-boot set up?

3.Will developing in multiple platforms be resource intensive?

4. I want to take part in hackathons, need to boost my coding but am looking for sites like codewars to practice, know any good ones?

You just confused me more.
Is it Android? What version? Which phone?
if your browser keeps crashing you have other problems with that device...

>>55211941
It's your /etc/fstab or something similar, it cannot find your root drive.
But it looks weird... /root/dev... ? wut?

So anyway, it cannot mount your root partition so it just drops you back to Busybox.
What can you do... make sure you only have one drive plugged besides the pendrive when you install.
Or just grab Ubuntu and install that.

You could also try fixing this if you know Linux, using a live disc.

>>55211967
Well, just spend more on the CPU, its a solid CPU for years to come.
Check features too!.
Like virtualization. Built-in AES.
Which Turbo do they support.
The i3 is also a fake 4 core, not 2 core only. Some games are picky about that.

But, you are right about the upgrade.
Meh, up to you anon. :^)
>>
>>55211972
> I could do with a new laptop
Depends on what you need.
You only need Windows, really, you can also just virtualize.

If you want gaymes, buy an ASUS ROG, they are cheap, especially the prev-gen ones. (So the ones with Haswell + new GPU.)
If you want no gaymes, used is fine, buy a used ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook with warranty.
If you just want something new, get a Lenovo or whatever brand new. Anything with an i3 and 12-16gb ram at least.

> Is it better to use multi-boot set up?
You can do that if you are a masochist, but if you actually just want to get better, study, be productive, you can just have Windows.

> Will developing in multiple platforms be resource intensive?
No. If you want to test, a Linux is piss small and lightweight to virtualize. Any CPU can do that.
OS X? If you get at least an i3, no hard task either.
But, it's very rare that you need to test something on all platforms. Only happened to me once when I had a JFace/SWT project.

Memes.

If you want to boost your coding, just get a job as a student. Most good and big companies will accept you instantly.
One rule. One very important one.
NEVER put work before your studies NOT EVEN FUCKING ONCE.
It will fucking rape you. I am not kidding.
If your boss says its more important, leave work.
But trust me, if you drop out, they are not interested in you anymore.

Just download the latest firmware from sammobile, or use Cyanogen from XDA.
The s3 is a pretty shit phone with it's 1gig of ram. Cyanogen might help a lot.
It's very well supported on the S3.

I had the S3 LTE version, much better, but battery was still rubbish.

Oh and if you are social or you know this fast skinny guy who just runs everywhere and goes to people, and you want battery life, the used business laptops are better deals - you can get 9-cell batteries for them and they last pretty long like that. My T500 with a 9cell lasted around 7-9 hours, with active use. With gaming it did 4-5 hours. It was pretty solid.
My new ROG does ... what... like 3 hours at best with light use. :^)
But it's always enough, so meh.
>>
>>55212532
IF you can get a SOLID used one - like in my country we have 'trusted marketplace' for hardware.
Kinda like craigslist, but people have reputation and shit, its' nice.
So if you have an option like that, a used card is sooo much cheaper, and so much faster.

But cards bake fast. So if it's not a solid market, don't buy from there.
From what I heard the 950 is gimped as fuck.

Maybe local stores might have cheap older series cards.
R9 200 series, 7xxx AMD series (I mean its a rebrand since the 7xxx), Nvidia stronger 6xx series, 7xx series...
Nvidia offers drivers for a lot longer so that's a plus definitely.

I bought a 7870 like this and a GTX780.
If I used the budget to buy a new one, I would have ended up with some 950 and something similar, struggling to do 1080p low-mid.
These cards happily push 1080p games with cranked up graphics.
>>
>>55212539
i tried updating the firmware and it said that it's up to date.
i don't care about any of that other stuff, i just use my phone for texting and image hoarding.

how can i fix this authentication problem? that's all i need.
>>55212592
what does that mean and how can i prevent it?
>>
>>55212532
Older cards are less power effective. If it matters to you - heat, consumption - go with the new, definitely.
The new AMD meme card is also coming out.
But, we have NO solid info about it, only shilling.
So you can wait that out.

So far I had a bad experience with AMD cards.
Drivers. Fuck drivers. Windows drivers are buggy as fuck. Using a 2 year old card? Fuck you, no drivers.
Linux? Non existent. BSD? LOL.

Gameworks, PhysX, Nvidia proprietary shit: People cry about it, but they do look nice, it's nice to have them.
Again, AMD might be cheaper, that's a good selling point for sure.

>>55212592
But there was a 4.3 update IIRC, and CM11/12 is also on it.
>>
>>55212603
No, But cards bake by themselves due to normal use, dust, and shit coolers.

This done nothing but run the GPU on 100%. lol.

So.. problem is, you cannot check a GPU fast, and easy.
Most of the times small artifacts happen when you play games, run furmark.
Like textures are out of place, there are pink colors sometime, anything out of place really.

Hey /g/ i have a very unique problem. Windows 10 just freezes and i have to restart my computer to use it again.

I think the problem is my mobo in some way, like I don't have the configuration quite right (UEFI), I've already tested or replaced every other piece of hardware. Check disk comes up clean, Temps, voltages should be good.

I have the latest BIOS version and have all my drivers up to date except for 2. I have even RMA'ed my mobo and yet I still have this issue. I've searched around with others for my problem and there are no solutions.

I can't seem to update this one driver with the intel driver update utility. The other driver i cannot install is the intel graphics drivers, It says my system does not meet the requirements. However i don't think these drivers may be the issue.

I was able to stave of the problem by changing the amount of memory the onboard graphics but that has stopped working.

It could be the processor, but I did run the intel diagnostic and it turned out fine.

Also by luck I do have a compatible processor that I found in the trash at work. No idea if it could just make my system worse though.

I now have a SS of my event viewer. Don't recall if i have checked out the error on google or not.

PSU problem?
Check CPU with prime95?
(But honestly if it's a CPU issue, it would cause different problems.)

IT's a PSU issue most likely.
A ram problem would simply throw you a BSOD.
Or crashes.

Random reboots, reset, shutdown is power supply.

Hey /g/, I'm sort of new at programming in C++ and am working on this project related to pokemon. Basically, right now I have the pokemon's number followed by a tab, followed by the pokemon's name and a newline after it, but I'm having a bit of trouble reorganizing the data.

When I run the following code:
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <string>

using namespace std;

int main(int argc, const char * argv[]) {

ofstream outputFile("/Users/ricardoiglesias/Desktop/DemoFile.txt");
ifstream inputFile("/Users/ricardoiglesias/Desktop/NEWListOfPokemon.txt");

const int SIZE = 718;
int pokeNumArray [SIZE];
string pokeNameArray[SIZE];

int counter = 0;
if(inputFile)
{
while(!inputFile.eof())
{
inputFile >> pokeNumArray[counter] >> pokeNameArray[counter];
outputFile << pokeNameArray[counter] << " " << pokeNumArray[counter]; //Changes the order of the data elements so it is later able to be sorted

counter++;
}
}
outputFile.close();
inputFile.close();
cout << "Done \n";

return 0;
}
, I get the following error "Thread 1: EXC_BAD_ACCESS(code=1, address=0x600000005).

Any help is greatly appreciated

Just use std's "vector".

You can also drop this stupid SIZE const with this.
It should be dropped, it's stupid. Sorry.
