Any tips for stress testing a used laptop?

Don't.

If it's used, it means it's already lasted many years, there's nothing to prove.
if you mean testing for overheating, you should open it up, clean out the dust and reapply thermal paste to the fan heatpipe assembly.

run memtest to check the ram
stress test the cpu and gpu with benchmarking programs
try writing a big file (4gb+) and a few hundred small files to see if the hdd shows any issues

but as was said above, buying a used laptop is usually not a good idea since there are many parts prone to failure

If you know what you're doing then no.
Buying an HP Pavilion from that gamer kid who used it for the last 5 years constantly plugged in to play the epik gaymes is definitely not a good idea
But buying used business machines for 1/5th of the original price from corporations with minimal wear (mine was pretty much brand new) is a very good idea
