IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T601F

>>55156440
They're good laptops for a good price. When you can get a T400 or T410 without even breaking $100, it's not like your life is going to be ruined if it turns out you don't like them.
>>
>>55156533
How good is the battery life on a T601F?

Does the high-res screen not drain the battery?
>>
>>55156579
Good enough, considering the age of the hardware. 3.5-4.5 hours out of a 9cell. Could probably hit 5 or 6 if I shut down everything.
>>
>>55153378
Any thoughts on the X1 Carbon vs the X1 Tablet? I like the look of the tablet, but I'm worried it won't be very durable, so I'm also considering the carbon
>>
>>55156264
Mine's nothing compared to the X61 I had, and I've got the i7-2640M. I did recently replace and repaste the HSF assembly, however.
>>
How big is the difference between the thickness of a T420 and an x201? It's been very hard to find a real life comparison.
>>
>>55157108
T420 is about 3-4mm thicker IIRC.
>>
How are first gen X1 Carbons? Found one near me for $140 with 8GB ram, 240 GB SSD, i7 processor, but no OS. Worth it for a first gen?
>>
>>55157231
Good price I'd say.
>>
>>55157256
I thought so too, but the owner is an hour away, so I might convince them to let me have it for cheaper. I was more wondering about Build quality. Are they sturdy, or closer to consumer grade where one drop will kill it? Looking for a good college laptop, and want to be prepared for any drop.
>>
>>55157277
Not as sturdy as, say, the X, T or W series, but still sturdier than regular ultrabooks. If you want something that's going to survive drops, and you're not concerned with age, look into an X200 or X201.
>>
>>55153378
Why not include the guide to installing Liberboot? It's the best reason to buy an old thinkpad.
Requires some disassembly, a raspberry pi and a special clip but it's not too hard.

>>
Anyone knows where I can get a Wifi driver for my W520? I'm using Debian & Lenovos official site is not very helpful
>>
>>55154608
Lmao good thing they are cheap to replace. Some people say you need a very precise and stable power source to do it, others say you can just use the raspberry pi 3.3v or just plug the laptop in but don't turn it on.
>>
>>55156533
tfw x200 for $40
no HD but I didn't want one anyway
>>
>>55157313
I'm only concerned about age as far as value goes (finance major). Also, I'm mostly looking at Craigslist right now, so the only good cheap ones I found were the Carbon, a T410 for the same price, and a T500 for the same price, but I'm leaning toward the carbon, just because it's newer.
>>
>>55156676
No one with experience on this?
>>
>>55157434
Ebay is generally a good bet as well, just check seller ratings. If you plan to carry the laptop around all day I'd recommend something in the X series. The older you're willing to go, the more durable they are.

You got no reputation here, you got no name, you got jackshit here. It's survival of the fittest and you ain't gonna survive long on 4chan by saying stupid jokes that your little hugbox cuntsucking reddit friends would upboat. None of that here. You don't upboat. You don't downboat. This ain't reddit, kid. This is 4chan. We have REAL intellectual discussion, something I don't think you're all that familiar with. You don't like it, you can hit the bricks on over to imgur, you daily show watching son of a bitch. I hope you don't tho. I hope you stay here and learn our ways. Things are different here, unlike any other place that the light of internet pop culture reaches. You can be anything here. Me ? heh, I'm a judge.. this place.... this place has a lot to offer... heh you'll see, kid . . . that is if you can handle it.

>>

The X series was introduced 16 years ago, and you could get away with using even a 10-year-old model if your needs are light enough. 5 years is young, especially when the CPU still performs very similarly to the newest ones.

The blue-dotted center mouse button on my x220 came off. I have it sitting there now but it's not secured. Where's the best place to buy a replacement button, or will I have to buy a whole new keyboard?
>>
>>55158527
Just get a new keyboard, they only cost about $15 on eBay.
>>
>>55158378
The i7 might perform a little better than the i5, but it's not worth the extra heat and power usage. This holds true even within the same generation, a third-gen i5 is definitely preferable to a second-gen i7.

The fingerprint reader is mostly a gimmick. The best use I've found for it is being able to turn on my computer and log in automatically while I go get a drink or take a piss or whatever. Pretty much completely pointless if you have an SSD.
>>
>>55158613
ok thanks, and is it worth it to get a nvidia gpu over the intel one?

The 420's sold in greater quantities, so parts for them will most likely be more readily available and a bit cheaper.
>>
>>55158989
No, just Expresscard.

>>55158956
T520 has a bigger screen to illuminate, so it'll have slightly worse battery life than the T420. They take the same battery so there's no difference in availability.

For all the love it gets around here, the T420 is pretty much the worst /tpg/-approved Thinkpad. Its only redeeming trait is how cheap it is for the specs. The screen is atrocious by any measure and there's no mods to make it better. The cooling is barely sufficient to keep a stock i5/NVS configuration from overheating, never mind the quadcores people think they can stick in them. It's still miles beyond actual consumer pleb shit and the bad Thinkpads, but among the good Thinkpads it's at the bottom of the barrel. Really, unless you're so broke you absolutely can't spare the extra $40 or so, there's no reason to favor it over the T520.
>>

>>
>>55161188
Honestly I am amazed at how fucking terrible the screens are on the T420 and the T430. It's like the switch to 16:9 came alongside with a complete fucking bargain basement parts bin. While the build quality of the actual computer is really good, the screens are miles and miles behind the consumer equivalent. It's part of the reason why I've resisted upgrading from my T400 for so long (plus it runs super cool with the P9500 processor). Although I might consider a W520, since they apparently have really beautiful screens. The only things turning me off are the absolutely fucking massive power brick, and the very high prices (there is no reason a 5-year-old computer that is not a Mac should cost $400).

>>
looking on ebay for thinkpads i noticed a few of them have bios password enabled. Is there any way to disable it or am i fucked
>>
>>55162919
Generally support is better but honestly a lot of standard consumer laptops run Linux just fine.

I got an Asus UX21 from my sister when I started third year in 2014, because she decided she wanted a Mac. It was fucking terrible with Windows 7, so I threw Ubuntu 14.04 on that shit and absolutely everything worked out of the box. In some ways it behaved better than my T500 (which would sometimes refuse to connect to Wifi after waking from sleep, plus the ATI card doesn't play nice with Linux). I think so long as you have integrated graphics and an Intel wireless card, you're good.

But Thinkpads give you /g/ cred

How does a thinnkpad compare to a toughbook?
>>

i've owned tons of thinkpads and older toughbooks like the cf-30. the thinkpads arent nearly as heavy or water resistant as the toughbooks. the toughbook keyboard is also hard as fuck to type on especially if you get the rubber waterproof one. honestly i'd never get a toughbook for day to day use unless i was going to be travelling through the rain forest or using it at a muddy construction site or some shit.

i have also noticed that with a lot of the cf-30 toughbooks that i had that the screen/backlight starts to go out after around 15-16k hours of use.

Hey guys, looking into getting a thinkpad, and budget is only somewhat of an object- i.e. willing to spend up to ~1100. I'd like to get as much value for my money as possible, and get as much functionality and power in as small a package as possible. I'm leaning towards something in the tablet line, and right now the number 1 contender is the X1 Tablet, but I was looking for input regarding higher end used thinkpad tablets.
This will be used for solidworks, MATLAB, and general engineering use- any input?

Speaking from experience as a MechE student, you shouldn't be taking your laptop to lecture, so you'll probably only carry it to lab- and that's if you don't have pretty decent computers already there.
>>
>>55166836
Oh okay, I see. Only reason I ask all this is because the university requires laptops and they must be able to run certain software (matlab, solidworks)

How is MechE at university in general?
>>
>>55166973
I love it, personally, though it varies wildly from university to university. Where're you headed?
Not a shock that they'd require you to run solidworks; but this just means you'll be taking it to the computer lab, which could suck depending on how far away you live.
>>
>>55167009
Nice, and yeah I know there's other things you have to run, but they basically just want a computer with good specs. I didn't plan on taking notes and shit on a computer, no way my attention span could take it. I'll be for sure using pencil and paper for lectures. I'll be living about 15 mins by shuttle from campus and I'm going to Texas A&M, you?
>>
>>55167038
Ah. I'm at Berkeley, I got lucky and ended up living about 1 minute from the engineering buildings (by foot).
If you can take the shuttle to class, portability shouldn't really be an issue regardless of what you end up getting- so long as it fits into your backpack, you should be good.

Also got a 3rd party IPS for X220 and works perfectly.
Honestly if the T420 had an IPS screen option, I'd have gotten it over the X220.
I think now there's some mods for better screens for both the X220 and T420 but unless everything breaks on the X220 at once, I don't see myself getting a T420 - just fixing it as it breaks for as long as I can, and hoping a good modern laptop comes out before it becomes totally unusable.

and some nipponese adapters being sold here

I'm thinkin about buying the 1080p kit from china, just trying to justify why i'd want a 1080p on a 12.5 inch screen that I only really use for emails and videos / very light work outside of the house as I use it with a monitor most of the time.

Maybe impulse buy it for christmas or something.

There's also the T420 mods, as well as X230 and T430 mods, that have recently become pretty good because of the whole full hd ips thing, but I'm only postin the X220 stuff as you asked for that.
It's relatively straight forward but not as simple as replacing the screen and doing nothing else - you can only get 768p screens for that

I've got hold of a second hand Lenovo Thinkpad E530 through work, decided to replace hard drive with an SSD to see if I can make it usable (it's previous owner - salesman wanker purposely started mistreating it so we'd be forced to buy him a new laptop)

I've got an SSD I can use and I intend on putting Windows 10 on it, but have a few questions:

1) Should I reflash the bios? If so, how?
2) Am I right in thinking Windows 10 will validate itself against the components? So if I reflash the bios, will it lose the validation and I'll have to find a new windows key somewhere?
>>
>>55169943
Yeah, if you flash the bios wangblows will think you're trying to trick it and tell you to fuck off.
You don't need a bios flash unless you want to change actual parts of the laptop or think you're hot shit.

Well, what do you want?
Dedicated Trackpoint buttons, but a smaller touchpad that hinges at the top and therefore doesn't "click anywhere" so well? T450 or so.
Large touchpad but slightly annoying "virtual" Trackpoint buttons? T440 or so.

Note that T440 and T450 touchpad/touchpad+buttons units are the same size and interchangeable. So, a T440 user who wants the buttons can buy a T450 touchpad on eBay and install it, or vise versa.

I have a T440p. Personally I like the large click-anywhere touchpad. I use the Trackpoint a lot, and I've gotten used to the virtual button shit. Left and right click are really easy, a simple thumb pivot from the middle of the pad (left) to the top right (right). Middle click is a bit annoying since some tiny bumps are the only tactile thing distinguishing the middle-click area from the rest of the pad.

People also bitch about the keyboard. It's not the old layout and it doesn't have a blue enter key. But it is quite usable, sturdy and comfortable to type on.

As for build quality, it's not as good as the older ones that had the magnesium frame, but it's still more than sturdy enough to withstand normal abuse.

That was my initial take on it too when I first got it. Then two things happened. Synaptics made a far less shitty driver for it. Then I got used to the virtual button thing. Apart from the middle click fuckery, it's now about as easy to use for me as the kind with physical buttons.

Your best bet is getting a 15" T60p that the seller doesn't know anything about. They all shipped with Flexviews, so there's little to no chance of getting fucked over as long as you can ensure that it is a 15" 4:3 T60p. The people who know what they've got want outrageous amounts of money for it. Even the SXGA+ screen is up to ~$150 now, it was much more reasonably priced even just a few months ago. I got my near-mint UXGA T60p for just $95, so they're out there. You just have to be patient and vigilant. Good luck, anon.

Yo I still love my T60. Do lots of research and max out each component.

Get a new OEM 9 cell battery.
Decide what the UltraBay should contain based on your needs (ultra mobile, battery; heavy media consumption, another SSD; maybe you're one of those folks who would use an optical drive; etc).
Make sure you have the best system board with the best CPU it can hold.
Check your heatsink and thermal paste for grit and dust and buildup.
Research wireless card whitelists, understand how to remedy this lock, and use the best wireless card available.
Check out mSATA SSDs and see if that's something you're interested in (it freed me up to add the battery in the UltraBay).
Make an informed decision about which OS you use.
Research your frame's and system board's LCD capabilities and get the best screen you can find.

Get to know the upper and lower limits of your machine, and make the strongest little Thinkpad you can. It's totally worth it for the sense of accomplishment when you know you personally installed every component in your laptop.

The T60 replacement parts list has been my most visited website in the last couple weeks. Everything is running beautifully and I couldn't be happier.
>>
>>55172556
UXGA is fairly rare. It was the top spec, and it's the more sought-after resolution by collectors so it is a hard one to come by. Getting away from TN is what matters though, so settle for SXGA+ if you have to.

You're not totally in the dark, even if the seller doesn't know what he's got. If you can see the seven-digit type number on the bottom of the unit, you can run it through this site: http://tp.krelay.de/ to get the factory specs of that model. The only things it can't identify are configure-to-order models (type number 2007-CTO). Since those are customized machines, there's no way for any database to help you. Your only option at that point is to ask the seller and hope he does know and just forgot to mention it in the listing. From there, it's all up to chance. If the price is good enough (<$100), it's worth taking the plunge since you'd be getting a solid deal even if it turns out to be SXGA+. $100-$200 is still fair, not a great deal but acceptable given you're getting the Flexview screen and a full T60p for spare parts on top of it. $200-$300, I would be hesitant if you can't confirm the resolution. Over $300 and you might as well just suck it up and buy one of the overpriced models sold by the people who know what they've got. No reason to spend that much on a gamble.
>>
>>55173088

>>
>>55173189
no they don't.
>>
>>55173088
Can the Ultrabay battery be used to hotswap the main one? They don't add enough capacity to be worth buying to use on their own, but if I could use it to swap one 9cell out for another without having to power down the machine, that would be a different story.
>>
>>55173088
It's coming with a dead battery and may or may not have a working HDD, it can't find a bootdisk. However, physical condition looks good, it's a 15" 4:3 model, and was exceptionally cheap. No idea on specs otherwise, I'll give the thread a rundown when I pick it up tomorrow.
I'm divided on getting a new battery, I already have a T420 for going out with, I doubt that I'll use the T60 untethered anyway.

The first thing I plan to do when I bring her into her new home is to take her apart, replace the thermal paste and heat-sinks, and give her a thorough clean. What do you recommend for cleaning the chassis and internals?

It isn't. It's a completely sodomized layout. The only good thing lenovo did with the keyboard design was the enlarged Esc and Delete keys

not only all intel processors.
every arm chip is from arms founding and every amd chip after the phenom 2 series.
there is an unconfirmed rumor though that the 1090t and 1100t series are backdoored too.
>>
>>55173805
so the argument is that it's better to be compromised at 100 points in the OS and the hardware than just the hardware?

>>55173805

>oh no they'll know what 2d moeshit I fap to

>>55173840
the argument is that it doesnt matter.
since all that needs to be compromised is the hardware.
no software is secure if that is the case.
without exception.

hi guys, should I get an x220 or x220 tablet

the x220 tablet has an IPS screen

I was thinking of buying one from china to replace the x220 anywas, and now I see the cost is virtually the same for both all expenses considered. + the x220 tablet has an ssd which is something I would've added to the x220 anyways.
>>
>>55174266
x220t is heavier and has worse battery life
>>
Does the improved graphic card in the x230 make a difference in comparison to the x220?
Should I care about it if I don't usually game?

I can get a T530 with an i5-3320M for $280... Should I go for it? There's an extra 50 bucks for the docking station, is it worth it?

*T430, not 530

I already asked but I'm still unsure, is 12.5 inches too small for a main computer ? Is the resolution more important than screen size, i'm planning to get a 1080p x260 :(
And also is an i3-6100U good enough if I ever need to compile stuff or for very light gaming such as minecraft ?
>>
>>55175167
Way too small, you'll kill your eyes. I find the bare minimum to be comfortable is 14 inches, anything else is garbage. A 6100U will hold minecraft and compiling just fine, I have a 4010U and I can do the same:

>is 12.5 inches too small for a main computer
Depends on you really. Personally I have a dock at home connected to a 27" monitor so I can do serious work, but when I'm mobile I like to actually travel as light as possible so went for an X220.
>>
what makes a laptop a business laptop?
>>
>>55175230
the price :^)

Generally they're better built and have lower specs to compensate, but it depends on the manufacturer. "Business" is as buzzwordy as it gets, not unlike Windows "Pro".
>>
>>55169933
I've owned the T430 and have now "downgraded" to an X220 and can attest to the fact that both are great laptops with the X220 being a perfect machine on-the-go
>>
>>55175314
Why did you downgrade? I am buying a T430, is something wrong with it?
>>
>>55175329
My back was getting wrecked on a daily basis as I have to carry my laptop constantly in university.
>>
>>55175221
>>55175224

So I just tried out an "old" 14inches hp laptop I had and I think it's a bit too heavy and too big for carrying around, I might carry it in town so maybe I'll stick to the x260, thanks for answering
>>
>>55175449
you can't carry a larger laptop around?
You're memeing right?
>>
>>55175505
I'm a large guy and yes the T430 (along with everything else I have to carry because my campus is not close to home) was on the heavy side (my bag weighed +9kg) while the X220 is not exactly an ultraportable I still found it to be worth the price at the $300 I got it for. But no I must be memeing.

Nope. There was only a problem with 16GiB RAM being incompatible, but it's easily resolved by connecting the monitor hdmi cable after booting windows (not before)

How did you manage to spend $300 for eGPU setup?

I recently got a V8.0 EXP GDC Beast (expresscard) and a power adapter for $60 shipped and a GTX 750 should be less than $100.

I was very impressed that the official Nvidia drivers with PRIME worked out of the box and that I could just use the integrated display on my x230 without any hassle. The performance is considerably better than with the integrated graphics and a lot more games are playable.

It's also nice for bragging as most people have never seen, or even heard, about eGPU setup.

You need to get a contact at a company that operates a large quantity of ThinkPads or a company that leases and supports ThinkPads for other companies. You just need to go out there and hustle.

It always amazes me how little companies care about their end of cycle laptops. It's almost like there is a market for companies that wipe, refurbish and sell used enterprise laptops.

Sadly this has become a well competed business in my area.
