IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Kind of pissed. Fell for the ThinkPad meme and got a P50s.

Love the device and it performs great, but it's been just over a month and the fucking screen bezel is already coming off, so I have to get a replacement. Will Jewnovo ship me a new one before I have to send mine back? Otherwise I might just request a refund and buy something else.

Ideally I'd like to know how I can just fix this myself with some sort of safe glue?

Pic related, but obviously not my device.

just got a barley used p50 with the 4k screen, i7, 32gb ram, 4gb quadro m2000, 256gb ssd + 2 tb HDD for 1700 dollars. The previous owner was not too good with computers and unplugged the trackpoint while installing ram (also had no idea what a trackpoint was) but I got that worked out.

pros
>desktop class preformance on adobe apps
>gpu runs better with the apps than a gtx card
>Very easy to take apart
>built like a tank
>gorgeous color and clarity
>touchpad is silky smooth
>great keyboard with numpad
>instant startup

cons
>the increased color space takes a little getting used to. it feels way over saturated at first.
>the viewing angles on the screen suck. you have to be right in one spot to avoid any gamma shift but it's not noticiable when you're working.
>screen also takes some work to calibrate and disable the shitty auto gamma correction that's default
>display cover gets fingerprints very very easily but they come off with a microfiber

I work on adobe apps for a living and needed to replace my desktop. so far so good. the screen is a total cock tease though. it's awesome but the viewing angle gives me a little buyer remorse for spending top dollar on it.
>>

How's the battery? I chose the P50s over the P50 strictly because of the battery life.
>>
>>55137512

with all powersaving features off it's about 5 hours and running premiere pro that goes to 3.5 hours.
>>
>>55137528
Yikes that's actually terrible :X

Though considering the 4k screen not too terrible. Why would you want a 4k in a laptop though? Doesn't it look ridiculous unless you scale everything up (at which point why even have it)?
>>
>>55137572
>Yikes that's actually terrible

It's a mobile workstation you idiot, it's not going to get X260 levels of battery life.
>>
>>55137572
need that color space. 4k is more than just resolution. it looks pretty good at 200% scale. I'm not fooling myself that it won't be a plugged in 90% of the time kind of machine just needed a desktop replacement for travel
>>
>>55137587
no shit sherlock, that's not an excuse for putting a 6-cell instead of a 9 with NO other power options inside of a workstation laptop. A few generations ago we had workstation laptops with over DOUBLE the battery capacity (188Wh with dual 9-cells), now we get jack shit when it comes to power options on mobile laptops across the board.

>>
How many of you actually go beyond 128gb of data?

I just bought a 128gb ssd and I'm not sure whether or not to return it and get a 240-256 for like 1.7x the cost.

I'll be using my T430s as a Linux shitposting and rice machine, running Ubuntu and with windows in a VM to run office, Photoshop and a couple of other bits....

All my media will be on my microserver at home.
>>
>>55138879
I'm running Windows 7, a windows 7 VM, Adobe CS6 Master, some games, office, and seasons 1-4 of GoT on my 840 128 GB and it's only taking up 77.4 GB, so yes, you can do a lot on a 128GB SSD.
>>
>>55138879
The T430s supports two drives at once.
>>
>>55139425
Yeah but I'm considering using the bay for the battery desu
>>
>>55139475
Honestly, the ultrabay battery is not worth it at all.
>>
Picking between T440p and T540p. Similar specs, both are dual-core i7-4600M.

Can anyone elaborate on the differences between the two? As far as I can tell it's just the keyboard layout and screens, anyone have experience with either?

Also I'm planning on replacing the trackpad with from a *50 so that should be a non-issue.
>>
I got x220. Is it possible to change keyboard for a one in the pic (long, one row enter key) if i got different one? Is it possible to replace wifi module or network card?
>>
>>55139560
Any X220 keyboard will fit any X220.
There is a wifi card whitelist. You can flash a modified BIOS with the whitelist removed if you wish to use a card not on the list.
>>
>>55139596
As for card, im just wondering if i should/could replace it to get different mac than previous owner.
>>
>>55139626
I don't see why that would matter.

T430s didn't have a 9cell option and I get 2.5 hours tops on my used battery....

Hmmm. The ultrabay HDD can only be used for boot right?

No, you can use the ultrabay drive for whatever. I've owned an ultrabay battery in the past, they hardly hold anything. It would be more effective if you bought a new pack to replace the one you have.

Refurbished is a scam. Both that T420 and this T420s were "used", but their condition was impeccable. The only sign that either had been used at all was some wear on the touchpads, which is irrelevant because it's a sticker you can peel off effortlessly and nobody uses the touchpad on a Thinkpad anyway.

The U line is objectively better than an equivalent M of earlier generations in every single way. Stop being a fucking idiot.

I bought a new T460 and a T430 recently. Both have nearly equivalent CPUs performance wise.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=2608&cmp%5B%5D=890

The performance difference is 5%. The price difference was $700 more for the T460.

Why did I get a T460 then?

I paid that extra $700 for double the battery and half the size. It's not always about pure raw power. If that's all you care about (and it seems most of you do!), then yes, in nearly every case an older used ThinkPad is best.

If you care even the slightest about bulk or battery, you should consider a new one.

Thinkpads didn't have shit screens until a couple years after Lelnovo took over and started cheaping out. Three years before this model, the R50p had a 2048x1536 IPS screen. They're really rare though due to Thinkpads as a whole being more expensive in those days and the screens being really high-end options. I've never even seen a listing for the R50p, and if it weren't in Lenovo's support database I wouldn't believe that such a screen existed at all, let alone in 2003.
>>
>>55144564
Probably because Wide screens were more expensive to produce, since no one was making them. Hence, cut the cost somewhere. Average person didn't care, so they kept making shitty screens.
>>
>>55144721
>Thinkpads didn't have shit screens until a couple years after Lelnovo took over and started cheaping out.
FlexView was always an option before Lelnovo took over, but IBM did in fact ship some crappy screens. Not many, but they existed.

>>55144396
That's a T601 frankenpad. T60 chipset couldn't recognize 8GB. So the screen might be a transplant too.
>>
>>55144779
The screen is a transplant, but from a T60p so it's still ten years old. It's not a mod or anything, I just switched the heads of a T60 and T60p. The T60 did have Flexview options anyway, it's just easier to get a T60p because they only ever shipped with Flexviews, no chance of getting 1024x768 TN shit.

I have a Latitude D820 running Arch. It's processor doesn't quite have what it takes to do some simple stuff like unzipping packages or compiling. A CPU upgrade willl run me like 60 bucks plus effort. It already runs really hot, so I'm thinking the upgraded CPU will be even worse.

I bought 3 quite-greatly-used X220 Tablet systems for a total of $220 (funny, right?).

There was a hole in one of the palm rests.
A RAM door was missing.
Two hard drive doors and caddies were missing.

I pulled up the fucking parts list, plugged it into ebay, and have all of those parts on the way for a full repair.
It is so easy and pleasurable to repair thinkpads, and god damn, they are nicely built. The bottom cases are dinged up a bit, but the overall machines are still so fucking skookum.

X220, gonna replace thermal paste soon as when playing very light vidya or watching high res videos / streaming in high quality, the CPU temp jumps to 90/95 degrees C

However, I've also noticed recently since getting an mSATA (to have 2 drives, mSATA and high capacity HDD), that the mSATA sometimes idles at 50 even 60 degrees, even before the mobo and cpu get hot.

Is it normal for an mSATA to get such high temps? Any way to cool it?

Is the CPU causing it, as the CPU idles at around 50-55, and with poor thermal paste in need of replacement, the 'low' CPU temps of 50 heat up the mSATA to 50 which is 'high' for an mSATA?

>>55147825
Just outta curiosity, does pressing the left and right trackpad mouse buttons simulate a middle click?
>>
>>55152459
Oh yea, and what's the recommended thermal paste to buy?

Fuck, I'm about to fall for the meme. I'm a click away from ordering a T420.

Yeah, but the trackpoint middle button does too so why would you ever use the lower shits.

There are no negatives to that situation, and you can take the laptop with you when you're mobile (where you wouldn't necessarily be playing games anyway).

Desktops are so 90s nowadays.

I got an X220 with eGPU, and a desktop
Funnily enough I even have the same GPU in both (I own 2 660Ti cards)

So the older games run the same on integrated anyway, and some very new games, a few of which are unoptimized as fuck and some of which are just very high quality, run quite roughly (witcher 3 / overwatch / mirrors edge / doom), but I suppose still at 60FPS on low settings and low resolution.

Consider getting the GPU if you play relatively modern games (say, the past 1-6 years), as it will very much play them. Also bear in mind the weak CPU works very hard on games alone, so you need to close all your shit normally and the CPU will still be in the high 80s and 90s % usage. Some games also might stutter a tiny bit every couple dozen minutes or during loading.

It's an alright purchase, but I can only imagine it as a replacement if you only play retro games and / or basically spend your whole life on mostly just 1 or 2 videogames (such as competitive online games, or some big-ass strategy or building games).

If you can afford to keep your desktop for now, even if you can only use 1 at a time (using your desktop's PSU and GPU) then why not, the adapter doesn't cost that much anyway.

The main reason I keep the eGPU setup around is for when I'm travelling but staying a while elsewhere.

eGPU I rate 7/10, not too bad, but a bit overhyped / not great, just 'good'

Pic not mine
>>
>>55153005
what eGPU solution are you using and how well does it work with Linux?
>>
>>55153005
Thanks, that was helpful.

And yeah the only things i play are csgo and emulators nowadays, got a 950 to use as eGPU so i think it'll be fine.

My only worry now is if i should upgrade the cpu or not >>55152874

Kinda but not really, 2520m is not as fast as most desktop GPUs - if you're resizing a window of a heavy process such as high res videos, photoshop, some high quality stream, a videogame, it'll sort of stop for a second before resizing.
Also I find fullscreening online streams takes a second, instead of immediately becoming fullscreen like a desktop

I mean, in general you'd be fine replacing a desktop, in the sense that most jobs out there and most time killing out there is gonna be the same on it than compared to a desktop, so for the most part it'd be alright but a bit slower. Yet if you do some heavy editing or 3d design, very soon maybe even in just 1 year the 2520m will be noticeably slow and you'll want a desktop instead.

I'm >>55153005 this guy, and the last 2 years i've spent about half my time on the X220 and half the time on the desktop. The best is always gonna be to have both, but if I had to choose personally, very personally and just my opinion, I'd go with the X220 because it suits my needs and it'll suit most people's needs, but the desktop will always be better and you might need a desktop more than a laptop depending on what you do.

I have a PE4C v3.0, the latest in taiwanese chinkshit. Works fine on windows 7, too many hoops on windows 10 that I just gave the fuck up on it which is fine - I use 7 anyway, 10 was just a test.
Not tried linux yet, but on windows 7 it was 100% plug and play - windows autoupdated and installed nvidia stuff automatically.
Sorry, not tried Linux yet, but I've read that it works just as fine, and worst case scenario just dual boot windows 7 but use your linux partition to save games so your winblows partition is nice and small, or whatever you wanna do.

I had a $700 ASUS that I got back in 2012-2013 before I knew about Thinkpads or much about computer hardware at all. It was a 1366x768 glossy TN piece of shit with a dedicated GPU that was weaker than the integrated. The keyboard was chiclet shit that broke in a year, the clickpad was worthless from day 1, and the battery life was shit compared to what even a Thinkpad as old as this one can offer. The build quality was shit, the included AC adapter was always dangerously hot and it eventually fucked up the battery, and getting inside it was nigh impossible, no thanks to ASUS's shit support. I had to rely on some kid's shitty youtube video to learn how to access the CPU and GPU where the thermal paste had completely dried out after only a year of use. Fuck ASUS. They belong in the trash.

as the eGPU bottlenecks PCIe speeds, desktops are faster but also GPUs with bigger differences normally on desktops become more similar on eGPUs. For example, a gtx 9 million might be a 10/10 and a gtx caveman 1 might be a 6/10, but once they are both bottlenecked on an eGPU adapter the 10/10 might become a 5/10 and the 6/10 might become a 3.5/10. My point is that most GPUs work fine on an eGPU setup. None are amazing, basically all work fine.

If you're on your T420, upgrading your cpu will do near fuck all for your eGPU - the biggest bottleneck will always be the PCIe 2.0 speeds. Even if you upgrade to an i7 you might see like 2 frames higher max.
Upgrading your laptop is a different story - modern laptops that still have expresscard slots or can be opened up for a direct miniPCI slot have higher PCIe speeds and eGPUs work better on them.
But then again, they're shitty commercial crap or at best are still not as good as thinkpads for keyboard and build (like the hp and dell business laptops)

>>55153050
eGPU i had a spare of, PCU i had a spare of, so hard to put a price on it
Adapter was something like 50 quid off of ebay (80 bucks)

I still have a speccy from that laptop. Look it up, the GT 610m is actually less powerful than the integrated HD 4000. Literally a scam of a laptop. ASUS are scum, even if they make other laptops that aren't shit, the fact remains they made this one. Even Lelnovo's worst shitstains that they slapped the Thinkpad name on aren't this bad.
>>
>>55153186
I'll bet that 510 was thrown in to give the laptop CUDA support for something like sony vegas, but even still, that's sorry as hell for their higher end option.
>>
>>55153224
Must've been, since I bought it new and it's Ivy Bridge. Early 2013 maybe. I didn't actually pay $700 fortunately, it was on sale at $580, but it was still a fucking scam and I'll never even consider buying ASUS again because of this. Fool me once, you know?
>>
>>55153186
Back then it was a fair price for that i5 +HD4000 , yea the GT was shit.
Still Asus makes some cheap laps with good internal parts that stay cool.
I know they slap some cheap displays and some cheap plastic case on-there, the keyboard and pad are shit and camera is shit and all that but you get a beast inside that works smooth+cheap.
