I'm thinking of maybe picking this up next time I'm at Costco for food. Not sure how I feel about the plastic band, though. The blue accents on the watch itself look kind of fun, but without going full-retard like the colorful G-Shocks.

I literally just bought pic related.
I would really reccomend that you go with the top range of the protreks
An ABC watch without solar charging means you're gonna be changing batteries every 6-8 months. Also the PRW looks better (imo) and uses the version 3 sensors.
You could also go or the prw 3000/3100 which is a more modest size but can't be worn on a nato and only has 100m WR.

How do I find good vintage seikos on eBay?
>>
>>55100651
I picked up a GW9400 which is a very similar watch in terms of functionality and I'm loving it. It's a bit thicker than the PRW3500, but it also doesn't have that silly rotating compass. The band on mine, which I'm sure is similar, isn't too bad at all. It's easy to clean, too, which is nice.

You might find what you want.

Didn't come in yet sadly
I don't think the bezel is silly. It helps with map navigation.
The rangeman is a pretty cool watch but the design doesn't right for an ABC watch.
Also the compass display sucks

How? Really, I can almost certainly guarantee you'll never use that silly spinny disc as an orienteering tool.

>>the design doesn't right for an ABC watch.
Means literally nothing...
Just say the design isn't right for you.

>>the compass display sucks
If you can read a map, the display should be perfectly legible. Besides, if you have a map, you should have one of pic related in your bag with your map. If you need to ballpark your direction, all you need is the sun and an analog watch displaying the local time. If it's nighttime, of course, there's Polaris.

Because you can orient the bezel to mag.north and line it up with a map. It's pretty fucking useful
And the compass display sucks on the rangeman because the bearing directions are confined to that tiny circular display.
I like the rangeman dude, chill. I just think the protrek models are better at being ABC watches.
>>55102516
Implying anything can beat a comfy NATO, especially in rugged situations
>>
>>55102557
Calmer'n'you are

>>Because you can orient the bezel to mag.north and line it up with a map
But it already has a digital compass.
And if you're just using the bezel and nothing else, literally any round object is just as useful, provided you indicate where "North" is on said object.
Just embrace the real compass.
Be honest with yourself.

>> the compass display sucks on the rangeman because the bearing directions are confined to that tiny circular display.
Actually, with the compass function engaged the entirety of the watch face is utilized. Your bearing in degrees is shown where the time usually is, the time is displayed in another section, and your bearing in N, NW, NNW, etc., is shown in yet another section. These are all on the display at the same time as the needle in the circular display which, again, is perfectly legible if you can read a map.

So everyone who i was talking to about getting a basic kit for replacing links/pins and general watch maintenence this is the kit i bought.
Some tools seem to be better quality than others but for $15 it's agood investment.

I've been wearing watches since I was a little kid learning how to tell time, so maneuvering without smacking into things is second nature at this point. The rare occasions that it does get knocked then whatever shit happens, it's a watch not a piece of fine art or something.

Is probably more likely that the skin cannot breath and gets irritated.
If you get one and have a sometimes reaction take note of the temperature when it happens.

Most are silicon so you shouldn't get any allergies to the material but sensitive skin reacts to heat/sweat as well as being covered for long periods

It's an old hand-wound Seiko of some kind. Maybe a Sportsman? You can probably find them on eBay for under $100 if you look carefully enough. Probably would not want something like this for daily wear, though, since the water resistance is probably shit to begin with and completely gone now. Will likely also need servicing after you buy it.

Yes, it's big and bulky

Anyone have an RGM? If so what do you think?

I'm thinking about getting one. But I'm waiting for the entire thing to be made in-house. As far as I can tell, some models the case is in-house and some the movement is in-house, but they have yet to make one that's 100% in-house.

Depends what you consider "in-house" to really man.

A "true" 100% in house is something they will probably never accomplish, because they would also need to found a lab to start making their own crystals and jewels. But for now I believe the biggest pieces of movement production they are missing is balance wheel and hairspring production. Which is not surprising, considering how difficult making those are.

They've been responsive to me in email. If you're curious about their plans for future in-housing their production you could ask them.

Ok, I meant 99% in house. I'd be fine if they got those somewhere else. I'd be ready to buy once everything else is American made; movement, parts, case, even screws. Call me autistic, but for some reason I'm fine with the jewels and crystal being outsourced.
Though if they ever got too actual 100% I'd buy another one.

They're by far the closest to 100% right? I know Weiss is trying for an all American watch too, but they don't have a moment yet.

I had one of those 7T62 Seiko chronos as a kid. It was rated 100m but was not a dive watch (Tachymeter bezel, no screw down crown). I used to swim with it regularly, and, being the dumb kid that I was, operate the stop watch under water. Nothing bad ever happened. No moisture, ran perfectly.

Speaking of Seikos, the Emperor finally answered my prayers and I found someone selling a complete disassembled 5246a movement. Time to make the KS hack again.

And in the 70's they thought we'd be living on the moon, and driving flying cars.

I honestly don't see it happening. They're on the same tier as China when it comes to watch movements, copying mediocre swiss movements poorly is the best we can expect.
>>
>>55113545
Yeah, but we didn't already have flying cars before the 70s.
American watches were the best in the world for a long time. There's growing demand and the tech is there.
The only thing that would hold it up is American businesses being the typical American businesses we know and cheaping out/making it all about marketing like Shinola.
>>
>>55113642

Works fine. It's a quartz movement, not a shitty Seagull, so it keeps time just fine. You don't obviously get "clickaclack clickaclack clickaclack" of an automatic movement, and the watch is pretty light (is that even a bad thing?), but overall it's fine as my dress watch.

I like my Vostok, but it clashes sometimes with my clothes, and I'm not even /fa/ tier. Just a month ago I was at a funeral... this Nomos clone would have worked fine, but I only had my Komandirskie, and it was kinda out of place.

It just helps you set your watch (since most phone clocks do not display seconds by default), and log differences to actual time for each watch you own over whatever period of time you desire, and calculate time lost/ gain per day. Then you can regulate your watch or tell your watchmaker "my watch is losing 20sec a day, please regulate".

Mine (the GW9400) is really tall and will get in your way. You also can't put other straps on it unless you get adapters. It looks dumb, though, and won't really make the watch any slimmer.

The F91 is 8.5mm thick. If you are looking for something that would hold up better, I guess you could check out the GW056. It's 11mm thick, so it'll be close to what you're used to. I think it's the thinnest G-Shock they've made.

Temperature can affect quartz accuracy, but not significantly. Pic related: One of my more accurate quartz watches.

Then each day the app says "check your watch" and you hit the record time button on the EXACT time the watch rolls over that minute and the app shows the varience in seconds so you can tell if the watch is running slow or fast

Not the marketing I meant. Sure, the only reason anyone would make a fully American watch is for marketing reasons.
>look muh American heritage
>used to be the best, are again
>great again hats
You know, shit like that. BUT if they actually do it I'm totally fine with that, I dont give a fuck about the reason if they make a solid watch.

The marketing I was talking about is saying shit like "Made in the USA" when the movement is Jap or Swiss or it was just assembled here. And that's rampant right now.
>>
>>55118434
no, you're a g-shock watch
>>
>>55122348
At least to me, it seems the 5 icon looks either slightly touched up or just plainly repainted. Made in Japan text is very uncommon on 5 models so it being a poointheloo special would make it incorrect and or suspicious, but seems oddly well done on this one.

Perhaps it was lightly touched up, since repainted dials are usually super easy to discern.

Also, i see a couple of brassing marks on the on the movement where it appears to rotor removed some of the plating off the movement, which is usually a source of concern since the rotor bridge might be bad.

GMT Master II is the obvious watch to consider. That's 40mm.

There's also the Cellini Dual Time. You can get it with a white gold case and black dial. Not sure if it's sporty enough for you though.

Maybe a UN dual time, back to 42mm.

But that also depends if you want GMT or dual time. Since many people use GMTs as dual time I thought I'd mention those.

And Luminox are meh at best, shit or just bland designs.
>>
>>55126509
Design isn't really an issue for me, unless it's terrible to the point of being an eyesore. It's more about finding a watch that wouldn't break under heavy duty use, would keep time accurately, have good visibility options in darkness, and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Since Luminox make watches for various armed forces and law enforcement agencies, I figured they'd probably have something that I'm looking for. But goddamn they ain't cheap. I'm not against paying for quality, but I need to know that I'm paying for something that's worth it.

Eh, even at their respective price ranges that go from 120~200$ Luminox watches aren't the best option too boot, not even really expensive, nor are they necessarily good bang for your buck. As much as i hate our retarded resident Casio shill, i'd go for a simple 5600 series Gshock or a 6900.

Since Gshocks in general, are a better (if not best) bang for your buck alternative for rugged watches that aren't really fuckhuge and thick for no reason, and their main disadvantage about them is that there is no lume (Digital) so to see in the dark you would need to use the specific button.

But shit, the F91 survived two weeks of the anal battering in bootcamp like a champ. Strap was uncomfy so perlon is the way to go.
>>

>But shit, the F91 survived two weeks of the anal battering in bootcamp like a champ. Strap was uncomfy so perlon is the way to go.

Sounds like a winner to me. As for the strap, I'm thinking about getting a Zulu for that maximum durability. And I must say I'm diggin' the solar powered feature of the Gshocks, since getting a change of batteries isn't the easiest thing when deployed.

However, the price is closer to 100 because the strap is horrible, so you have to replace it.

Alright, so after doing some research and looking up more recommendations I've settled on getting this fella, the Gshock GW6900-1. It's reasonably priced, durable, solar powered, digital, can be used in the dark, and doesn't look too tryhard/operator for regular every day use, so it covers pretty much all the things I'm looking for. Couple this with a Zulu strap and I reckon it should last me for a long, long time, and through all of the shit I'm gonna be facing.

I did notice some plastic gears for the calendar that made me nervous last night on the s36, i winder of the issue with the s26 was the same plastic pieces. I'm following a guide for the s26 to tear down the s36 i have, some of the s36 parts definitely look better machined

How to make something less usable in the sake of making it look 'cool.'

Skagen is just a subsidiary of Fossil. They make a design, ship the design off to the Chinese factories it gets made there with a Japanese quartz movement in it.

They're cheap, not meant to last, but to look hip. If you look at the watch you posted, the first thing I noticed is that the hands are fucking tiny on that watch. The hour hand gets no where close to the hour markers, minute and second hand get no where close to minute/second markers. Often to save money they will buy very small, low power ladies quartz movements and put them in mens watches and need to shave a lot of weight off the hands by making them especially small or of light material.

Here they actually did something decently clever to cover that fact up, the outer ring sort of divides the dial up, and the hands actually fit in the center dial and look like they go the full length because the minute and second hand extend to the edge of that inner circle. Very clever indeed.

On the watches they sell though, probably. Not every watch that uses their movement.

oooh i see, well thanks nearly wasted a good bit of money on that thanks!

They are completely made in China using a sub $10 watch movement
(The movement being the most important and also most expensive part of the watch)
I'm currently looking for similar on the chinese fleabays, sometimes you can buy direct from the manufacturer for 20-50 usd

I was able to get a $50 refund, which isn't much but I'd have to pay half that much to ship out back to ship it back to Canada. Considering the only things wrong with it was the crown stem being loose (easily fixed) and the missing hacking lever, I decided to keep it anyways
