So i kinda know why i should avoid chicken tika masala watches
Why Philippine ones though?
I found one i like in manilla and it says genuine or money back. The internals don't look like they where serviced by rajesh so what's the issue?
>>
>>55053950
Well if they showed you pics of every angle of the watch and the movement, and you feel confident in discerning its value based on those pics, then I don't see how its riskier than any foreign purchase. Though keep in mind that if you need to return it you'll need to pay out of pocket to ship it all the way back to flipland, and wait for the entire length of the voyage before you get the refund.

Looking for the cheapest chronograph with subsecond capability. Probably mechanical. Not sure if mecca quartz is sweepy enough. Dont really need a swiss 7750 but idk, suggestions?

Are the gray stripes painted on these Bond natos? I have an original Bond style nato, with the black, red and green and they're different colored nylon, not just printed on.

I'm starting to wonder if the Bond straps look good on anything other than dive watches. I put one on the Sinn 356 and the gf hates it.

I think it's more down with the style of the watch, no doubt there is a more casual or sporty watch that would wear a Bond well.

Remove or resize? Resizing is a huge pain in the ass and not even worth doing. Completely removing just requires some patience and a springbar tool to attack one of these points.

>>
>>55055327
Was being literal, no irony or satire round here

I'm assuming the vat or whatever tax you will have to pay will be like 10-20%

You can get a new one for about 300 euros from seiya Japan plus whatever tax you'll have to pay

Could be worth it to pay the extra for a new one, but I don't know how it will work out, haven't done the math

Anyway, all money aside it is a really good watch for the money
>>
>>55055410
The VAT (IVA) alone is 23%, all the fees should be around €90 for a €300 watch.
Not worth it in my book, with that money I can get a Seiko 52xx.

Nice, I like the design.

I recently had to get a new one. I decided on a newly manufactured one as the previous used one I bought turned out to be not accurate at all. I chose a simple design because I like watches that can be read with the blink of an eye.

I was a bit disappointed that I had to change the watchband which was only 22 centimetres in length. But with the watch itself I'm very satisfied.

The flywheel mechanism it mentions is specifically made to imitate a look of a tourbillon without actually being one. It's to bamboozle people who don't know what the 'spinny bit' does but knows it goes on expensive watches.

My criterion are:
price:<300

Power Bank Indicator

Bauhaus / modernist for style if closed face, open heart without being tacky (hard to find, I know)

Silver or Black bodied, preferably white face with blue or black highlights

watchband can be changed out

I'd prefer mechanical but would consider quartz at the right price.

Np. One of the silliest things about the flywheel is the shape they made it. Vacherie Constantine incorporates their logo into their tourbillions, and they decided to mimic VC with their flywheels - either full four pronged or just three pronged versions. Other people than VC make tourbillions, and the Chinese do make imitations of lots of different watches, but they seem to always go with the fake VC flywheel from what I've seen. Very odd.

I mean, let me put it differently:
If I had the ability to afford a Vacheron Constantin or anything above 300 dollars, I'd except it and wear it graciously every day without question.

If I'm buying my own watch, I don't want its mainstay aesthetically to be a Germanic Cross, because I know it would be affront to my ancestry insofar as 1/4 of my bloodline was wiped from the Earth in totality, with their village literally being razed and struct form the map. Pic related - Nikolajs Galdiņš, who would have overseen the muder of my great grandparents had they not fled Rega, Latvia - their mutual home town.

So what's fake about the tourbillon?
Serious question, as far as I was aware the tourbillon was simply the balance staff suspended in a cage to lesson the effect of gravity.
That seems to be what's going on with these Chinese watches in the 100-300 range, so what is it in missing?

>Serious question, as far as I was aware the tourbillon was simply the balance staff suspended in a cage to lesson the effect of gravity.

Yeah, balance wheel, pallet fork and escape wheel suspended in a cage that continuously rotates to normalize the effect of gravity across one axis.

As far as the images you posted:
>>55065567
is just a regular watch that uses a bridge across the dial to create the basic look of something like a tourbillon. Nothing actually rotates at all. It's basically an open heart watch that tries to create some of the basic look of a tourbillon.

Type in " tourbillon bridge" into google and you can see the desired look they are trying to get from the bridge over the balance.

>>55065587
This uses the same bridge across the dial sort of look. It also uses the vacheron style logo for a flywheel that sits on top of the escapement and rotates. The escapement itself does not rotate, it just creates a rotational look to fool people who don't know different because it's literally a seperate wheel on top of the mechanism that rotates. It's also kind of funny what they did here. VC and other brands often use a tourbillon as a second hand, where there will be a second hand on the cage itself or a second hand coming out of the bridge over the tourbillon. They appeared to have copied this but there are 3 second hands, each 20 seconds apart, lol. See the second hand VC uses on on both of these >>55061721 >>55061838

The tourbillon is a device that holds the balance wheel and spring, but also the escape wheel and its respective lever and pallets, all inside a cage that spins over its own axis with the help of an arbor, thus protecting the whole escapement from the effect of gravity.

Seiko uses different designations for when a movement is used in their own watches vs when they sell it to third parties. I'm not sure why but that's just how they do things.

4R36 = NH35
6R15 = NE15
8R28 = NE88
6T63 = VK63/VK64

There are probably others but those are the most common you see.

So Orient products in a nutshell.

My Marshall has a very subtle, inwards bound brush on the dial. Catches the light fantastically well, but is impossible to catch on camera.
>>
>>55081573
One of my favorite bracelets ever is on an Orient actually. If you remember last year around February or so I had one imported the week it was released in Japan.

But yeah. The cheapest Orients will use, straight up, a fully folded bracelet with limited range of motion that just feels bad. One step up from that they get a little better, feel and wear acceptable, but still folded end links.
>>
>>55081674
Folded end links are expected until you spend £300+ on a watch. It's just not something that's taken into consideration over a solid bracelet and a well decorated/designed dial. Which I'm sure you'll agree is something people look for over solid end links.

If you don't mind my asking, on what watch is that bracelet you hinted at featured on?

>>
>>55081930
And since we're at it: if I wanted to try out bracelets, how much would it cost to get something _decent_?
>>
>>55082602
Bracelets would honestly depend on material and of course watch, if you intended on getting end links to match.

SS you're looking at probably £10-£120 for a 10" bracelet. Obviously depends on style, and Chinese or not. You certainly notice the difference on a bracelet between cheap SS and good quality SS. Hence such the wide window.

Titanium, well. Good luck.
>>
>>55082654

Nope. It's a 2893-2 which means each time you set the time, the GMT hand moves too, making it a 2 step process (you'll have to adjust the GMT hand after you change the local time). Still a good movement though (compared to other ETAs).

Yes, huge difference between my Fortis Flieger Chrono which has AR on both sides vs. my Tutima with no AR. But the Fortis already has a scratch despite me baby-ing it. I wonder if AR just on the inside of the crystal has the same effect, without being scratchable.

WV0411DB. It's the white version, the blue is WV0401DB, green is WV0391DB. The bracelet feels fantastic, especially for a watch under 1,000 usd. But you can't swap to a standard strap on it.

The chapter ring contains the minute markers, the hour makers are applied to the dial.

If you look at something like a Rolex 16220 you'll see the lume marks behind the hour indices but minute markers are on the same ring as hour indices. Think of it like a combination of that Rolex 16220 and SKX007.

I'm the guy with the Maratac.
What were the negative things you heard?
The only things about it that I don't like are that the bezel has a tiny bit of play and that the crystal doesn't have an AR coating. Both of these things I can live with. As for the water resistance, it's fine for me because I don't scuba dive. It's fine in the pool and in the shower. If you really need a real diver's watch, get something like a Seiko. There are certainly better diver's watches out there for less. Also, I can understand the tacti-cool argument against its aesthetics.

As for the good, the simple, sterile dial is nice. The Superluminova is the brightest of all the watches just barely beating the Borealis. It is applied to the numbers and minute markers in the chapter ring in addition to the hands and hour markers. The movement holder is a beautiful red anodized aluminum. The movement, itself, is a very accurate 24-jewel Miyota 9015 that hacks and hand winds and has the smoothest sweep of the seconds hands in my collection with 28,800vph. After regulating it, it consistently gives me +/- 4 seconds a day which is terrific. It has a 42-hour power reserve and is manufactured by Citizen. It also has a slightly raised and domed sapphire crystal.
>>
>>55086198
Notice how the Rolex lume indices are small and the minutes are integrated, and on the Seiko the chapter ring is subtle and up the sides. The Orient's is huge, flat, and comes off as redundant.

True, but I can just dive with my 2 fliegers then, as they're both 10atm and have screw down crowns. If I'm going to get a diver it should outperform my non-divers, no?
>>55086537
Not really negative things, just that it has very basic features and is nothing special. I quite like the sleek, no-nonsense look though. How does the finishing compare to your other divers?

The next logical watch for my collection would be a diver (I'v got 3 fliegers and a King Seiko). I'm strongly considering this and a Squale 50 atmos (very different styles but I like both).

>>55087787
Well, the finishing is pretty basic. No flair or anything...It's brushed, not polished so it isn't as reflective as, say, the case on my Vostok. However, the case is a solid piece of 316L steel and has drilled lugs, which is a nice touch.

Between the Maratac and the Squale, I'd say go for the Squale. The 50 Atmos is twice as much, though, so if your budget is in the range of $400-$1000, that gives you loads of options like the Glycine Combat Sub, the Seiko Turtle (SRP775/SRP777), the Oris Aquis, and the Marathon GSAR. Borealis also has some great divers. I've been very happy with my Sea Hawk. That's just to name a few. If you've already narrowed it down to the two, again, I'd say go with the Squale. Just the heritage, alone, is worth going with it. Blancpain used to use Squale cases, for instance.
>>
>>55088446
Well, not "narrowed down" to those two, but those are the ones in consideration. Yeah, I definitely want the Squale more but was wondering if you get a better bang for the buck with the Maratac. A 50 atmos is in my price range but I'll need to sell one of my fliegers (most likely the Fortis). The Sea Hawk looks too much like a Tudor homage for my taste.

Oh, yeah, the Sea Hawk is definitely an homage.
Another point for the Squale, then, cuz it definitely has its own flavor.

The Maratac SR-9015L is essentially the same as the SR-3 Mid, only it's 46mm (vs. 40mm) and has a 22mm lug width (vs. 20mm). It also has an AR coating for the sapphire crystal...just $40 more than the Mid. (You can also opt for a sapphire exhibition case back for an additional $40.) Still $520 vs. $900 for the Squale. For that ~$400, you get a Swiss made watch that has a lot of heritage, a distinctive look, and 500m water resistance, although you'll just be getting a rubber strap and you'll need to sell one of your watches.

It's a very personal choice considering you have that option of selling one of your watches to afford one of the choices. In my opinion, the Maratac does offer better bang for buck. It just comes down to which features matter to you most.
>>
>>55089154
I love it.
Blued hands.
AR Sapphire.
Bright, evenly applied Superluminova.

Most womens dive watches are 34-38mm (or in case of Omega, 40mm). Dive watches kind of need to be big enough to be clear and easy to read even under water. Measure her wrist with a caliper and then compare that to the lug to lug.

That's one of those I've been looking for. The other is SNKK35 (which is less Explorer-like with an all-arabics dial, but still kinda in the same family). It's just that I see the Orient in a local online store (so it is available unless they're lying about their stock) - SNKE I'd have to import (no card here and PayPal is a bitch and wants ID scans to unlock the account, so that's another thing I'd have to deal with before buying it. Plus it's getting rarer from what I see) and SNKK isn't available anywhere anymore.

Is it worth buying a Seiko if it's not made in Japan?

A: Don't get the black coated one, get a plain steel one. The black will come off sooner or later (probably sooner) and look shitty.

B: A good rubber strap can be very comfortable. That said I've never owned a Seiko rubber strap so I don't how good they are.

C: Seiko's made outside of Japan are fine and just as good as Japanese made ones when comparing the same model.

Hey /wt/, I have a 6R15 that's running 30 seconds slow per day, almost brand new. I tried taking it in to be looked at under warranty by a Seiko AD, and they were telling me that the acceptable range is up to -40 seconds per day. Everything on the internet that I've seen seems to suggest the watch should be running no more than -15 to +25 per day.

Is there some sort of official spec sheet from Seiko that I can bring to the AD? Because otherwise they refuse to even look at it.

No, the J model indicates a watch with a Japanese-made movement. The case, though, may still be made in Malaysia.

But you absolutely do not have to go to a GS to get something entirely made in Japan. The SARBs have both Japanese-made movements and cases. You only need to flip the watch over to see the caseback and confirm this.

The mainspring doesn't rotate inside the tourbillon cage. Only the escapement.

So minuscule irregularities in the balance wheel and hairspring can create timing variations. Lets say your watch is made to operate at 21,600 beats per hour. That's 6 beats per second (or 3 vibrations per second.) If your watch has a single extra beat every hour it will gain 1/6th of 1 second every hour, 4 full seconds fast on the day. Not bad to get an extra 24 beats when the goal is over a half million beats over the course of a day.

So a watch is generally going to be regulated in 2-6 positions (and temperature variations may or may not be included)

Imagine holding your watch upright at your face. That puts the 12 o'clock position straight up. Then you could turn it clockwise 90 degrees and that would put the crown facing directly down. You could also have the 6 facing up, and the crown facing up. That's 4 positions. The other two are dial down and dial up.

So given those minute anomalies in the balance wheel and hair spring in combination with the effect of gravity on the watch pulling on the mechanism as it oscillates, you'll have slightly different timekeeping in each position.

A 'basic' tourbillion rotates the escapement around 1 axis, meaning you can effectively average 4 positions into 1 and regulate the timekeeping of the watch based on that. So even if you were -5 beats per hour on crown down, if you're +5 beats per hour on crown up, it's averaged, because the escapement continuously rotates on that axis. So over the long term, even if you hold the watch for extended periods of time crown down, the escapement is flipped over half the time.

There are ways that watchmakers have brought tourbillons to the next level, like the JLC gyrotourbillon, or Grubel Forsey 30 degree offset double tourbillon watches.

Also, watch this if you don't get what I'm saying

That's the point, a pocketwatch will be almost always in one position so you want a mechanism to compensate for that. It's not useful on a watch since its never in the same position.
