You have an overclocking CPU, but a non overclockable motherboard. And you also have 32 gigs of ram but only a 970? I think your budget allocation is a bit weird. Ditch the 32. Go for 16 Gigs and spend the extra on a nicer PSU or GPU. Or use it for a Z170 motherboard.

Is this a good gaming mobo? I'm complete garbage when it comes to motherboards, so I have no idea one way or another. I'd be pairing it with an i3-6100 and a 280 3GB, and eventually replacing the 280 with a 1070

I literally modified the stock "enthusiast gaming build" and swapped out the case and graphics card which I thought were needlessly expensive for what I wanted. The CPU was chosen based on the price drop feature on the site.

https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/jVZxFT/enthusiast-gaming-build

And what do you mean an "overclocking CPU"? I don't intend on doing any overclocking.

Reposting from last one as nobody replied.

Got some problems and questions related to them. Have I utterly lost in silicon lottery, is there something else going on and how can I troubleshoot this further?

I've had i7 4770k @ 4.3 GHz stable for around a year. No crashes which I could relate to the clocks and I could run benchmarks just fine. However to achieve that clock and run the system stable, it meant that I had to use 1.35V core voltage which is VERY high for Haswell and borderline hot under load even with my H110 closed loop liquid cooler. I accepted it as what it was even if the result I got was basically the worst 4770k I ever saw.

Recently I started experiencing crashes from occasional ones in games to ones during desktop use. USB devices would shut on/off regularly, CPU fan 2 won't work unless I plug it into one of the system fan headers etc. I tried running Prime95 and it crashed during the first minute. I go to BIOS, lower clock speed by 0.1 GHz and try again: crashes immediately. I lower clock speed again: system fails booting. After some retries it boots but it refuses to run a benchmark stable. I lower clocks to 4.0 GHz and voltage to 1.25V: it stalls in BIOS while saving and after it finally boots it still fails at running Prime on any of the benchmark types for more than a second. I never had any problems using clocks this low - just 0.3 GHz shy from the max turbo freq of the defaults.

Any idea what is going on? My CPU might be the worst Haswell ever produced but this kind of stuff makes me wonder if it's just the CPU causing problems or something else? I just loaded BIOS defaults and running Prime stable for an hour. Other specs:

Intel i7 4770k, now at stock clock speeds
Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780
2*Corsair Vengeance 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5 with newest BIOS available
Samsung 840 256 GB SSD with newest firmware available
Corsair AX760 PSU
Win 10 Pro 64 bit

So how to narrow the problem down? What programs to use?

Are factory overclocked GPUs worth the extra cost? Is it essentially pointless if you can overclock them yourself, or is there some kind of benefit I'm not aware of?
>>
>>55021009
It's safer if you have no idea what you're doing and refuse to Google things. That's about it
>>

Factory overclocked GPUs often come with better cooling systems and greater maximum power draw, allowing better overclocks.

If it's just clock speed then no, it's just for people without overclocking mobos.

>>55021152
Headroom would basically mean how much louder the amplifier can drive your loudspeakers above whatever the loudest tolerable listening volume you have without clipping or pushing the loudspeakers into compression and high levels of distortion. Dynamic range is the noise performance of the system, think it as the difference between the lowest level signal which can be measure above the noise floor and the maximum output level. This dynamic range is unrelated to the dynamic range of the audio content which is much harder to define but think of that as the amplitude variance as a function of time in the audio. Here the amplifier power does factor in.

Power requirements tend to be vastly exaggerated in audiophile circles so take those as a grain of salt. Those general guidelines by Crown seem sane enough. Check your loudspeaker's sensitivity, know how loud you want them to be at most and then add the extra dBs there based on the musical genre as a headroom too accommodate for the louder peaks in the signal. Add some more if you are going to use an equalizer. Chances are that you can be fine with 50w a channel in almost any home listening situation but check the loudspeaker sensitivity first.

not worth it.
you need to replace the motherboard unless you want to get a old LGA 1155 socket CPU.
And dell probably soldered the motherboard to the case, so you can trash it too.

this is why you don't buy a prebuilt, you can't upgrade it and have to replace it entirely.

Yes, it's called C-states and reduces power consumption of the CPU under low and idle load.

Stupid question here:

What the fuck is up with the temp readings? CPU load is constant below 8%, usually around 2-5%. Independantly of load, CPU temp spikes to ~60C every couple seconds, then returns to normal.

I can't figure this shit out because I can't do maths. I want to output the fraction of an number based on the cursor x position. So if the cursor is all the way to the left, it'll output 0, and as you move the cursor further to the right it'll increase that index until the max value. If the max value is 5, it outputs 0 at the very left, 3 in the middle, and 5 at the very right. Something tells me this is basic maths in javascript but i'm a complete idiot.

So I recently came into pic related and was wondering if it was worth upgrading from my 4790k, or if I should just pawn it off on ebay. Surprisingly, this and the 4790k fetch about the same price, so I could still sell my old one (which I've had for less than a year) for around $300. Plus my mobo for maybe $70. I'd still have to invest in a good skylake mobo plus some DDR4 modules.

I use my pc mostly for gaming, though benchmarks suggest that the 6700k handles fps drops a lot better than the 4790k, so I feel like that plus DDR4 would add a lot to the longevity of my pc.

Oh shit, thanks for pointing out the mobo deal.
Looks good, but if you can squeeze a bit more cash, you might want to invest in a 950 pro m.2 ssd instead of the 850 evo. It's about twice the price, but absurdly fast.
Also, you're really not getting the most out of that GPU with just a 1080p monitor. Either invest in a 4k monitor or a 144hz. If you don't care about either, just wait for the rx 480 and save yourself $500.

Have a 950 Pro. Absurdly fast is no exaggeration, you can copy to the same drive with 400+ MiB/s. For all intents and purposes a harddrive is used for, it's as fast as RAM.

And I agree that the card doesn't pair well with a FHD monitor. I recommend WQHD 144Hz, if your competitive and willing to tweak settings and OC your CPU.
Or UHD if you're into pretty pictures.

>>55026906
Been using 16 GiB for a couple years now. If you have a dual monitor system with several programs open you regularly break the 8 GiB mark. If you don't multitask much, you don't need it. But it's cheap and futureproof, so there is little reason other than budget to not get 2x 8GiB sticks.
He's right about the speed. 3200MHz Ripjaws are a good deal, too.

So my ssd boot drive just stopped being detected by my PC after only being in use for less than one year (Samsung 850 EVO). After moving the SATA cables around, I concluded it died and got a new one. My question is, why did it die so soon? Did it have something to do with my SSD software setting it to 'max performance' presets at the cost of reliability? I wish I could pinpoint the cause of failure to prevent more occurrences in the future.

Alright apparently I'm a dumb fuck and can't figure this out on my own so I'm turning to y'all. I have been trying to get powershell to recognize python (2.7.11) and it won't. Everything I have seen on stack overflow and the like says it's because I "need to add the python executable path to my Window's PATH variable." however when I go to do that, it's already there. What the fuck am I missing? I just want to learn to code.
>>
>>55027988
is there a C:\python27\bin directory?
you need to add this one if there is.

also restart cmd after changing environment variables, it won't pick up changes otherwise.

I overclocked my i5 4690k to 4.3Ghz on a gigabyte board.

I set the vcore to 1.3 and left it there. It's been like this a few months. However I don't like that it's constantly using that much power.

How can I set it such that the vcore is lower when the CPU is at a lower clockspeed, e.g. 0.1v @ 800mhz, while maxing at 1.3v @ 4.3ghz?

>>

>>
>>55028190
No, its RAM.

Doesnt matter at what speed meanwhile its over 1333MHz it wont give you a single benefit.
Unless you are using a IGPU.

Anyway if you have a Z170/H170/X99 motherboard you can increase the speed from the BIOS.

Unless its a noname brand all brands are good(Kingston, ADATA, Corsair, etc).

RAM is RAM, you usually go for the cheapest option.

If you are using a IGPU, yes.
Or playing fallout 4.

Other than that, it will be really rare for it to affect gaming performance.

What's the deal with Exynos and custom ROMs? Never installed anything like that, but would a S3 have problems with Cyanogenmod? I heard with that CPU line you're better off with touchwiz.
>>
I've never really considered it, but what kind of numbers should you be looking for when shopping for RAM? Aside from speed and capacity, obviously. I usually just grab the cheapest modules I can find (that doesn't have shit reviews) with the capacity and speed I'm looking for.

My 290X has served me well over the years. Sometimes I hit a GPU bottleneck, but mostly I'm hitting CPU bottlenecks (because 120/144Hz), and it has enough spare power to turn on SSAA.

At a minimum I'd recommend a 380X, it's what I got in my second rig. Just remember to put that power slider to +20%.
If you can wait three weeks, the 480 is going to be the best deal.

Just closing the browser and starting it again works but that's being a hassle. Anyone know what's wrong with my broswer?
