Ran ccleaner yesterday (yeah pretty fucking stupid apparently) and it ended up killing chrome, locking me out of firefox, and it even fucked up minor things like not letting me save pictures to the "my pictures" folder anymore. All around assfest, basically.

I want to do a system restore and I have to restore points available from the the second of this month, however when I try either of them it spits this at me
"System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x8000ffff)"

I googled this and tried a few fixes but they didn't work, llike allocating more space for the restore point, or doing system restore while in safe mode.

I'm completely fucking lost and I'm too stupid for my own good, anything, even insults are appreciated.

Extremely stupid question incoming, but bare with me. I deal with movie editing and my superiors have spoiled me - they've got me a Thinkstation P310 with a Xeon E3 1245V5. ATX boards are less likely to include video connectors, so you can't fall back on intel graphics if your GPU fails. If you plan to use only one video card at a time, there's probably no downsides to a micro board.

My download speeds are fucked, on multiple test sites my speeds seem to be fine, generally 4+mb/s, but in practice my speeds fluctuate between a 3-5mb all the way down to a few hundred kb or even nothing like in the picture. im pretty sure its nothing i can fix my self, as my ISP sucks and has tons of issues, but is there any way i can find out what/where the issue is? Got a question about DNS resolution because what my teacher wrote in her study material contradicts what I found through 9000 hours in Google.
So my teacher wrote that when requesting an address, your computer asks the closest (preferred) DNS server, which in turn (if it can't resolve the URL itself) forwards the request to its closest hierarchical parent which forwards again and so on.
What the internet says, is that the request isn't just forwarded until it's resolved but bounces between your preferred DNS and incrementally higher DNS servers.
So which is it?

Just wondering, when I do the "upgrade" choice instead of the fresh install, what exactly goes into that? Wouldn't keeping all the stuff the upgrade says it keeps just keep the problem?

Chrome not saving passwords or keeping me logged into sites even though I've done everything possible (if you bring it up, I've done it believe me) to fix that
System restores not working

New to desktops, only used notebooks so far.

A video card consumes too much power apparently, but if a card can consume 300W is only on heavy gaming, right? If I am shitposting then my consumption is lower and it is always consuming a lot?

not the person you replied to but:
not 100% sure as i havent looked into the specifics of it, but i think upgrade just affects your windows files/folders. if ccleaner somehow managed to fuck some of that up (seems like it could of considering your restores wont work, cant save files in certain locations, etc.) then it will hopefully be fixed with the upgrade option. if you do that and the issue persists, you might have to reinstall every affected program (im guessing youve tried that though), and maybe even do a fresh install of windows. using DBAN or something similar on the HD before reinstalling might fix the issue too

>A video card consumes too much power
get a better psu? really powerful card + shitty psu that cant even supply half the power the card needs = tons of issues
if you built the machine yourself, you probably shouldnt of
if you bought a "pre built" one from a store or something, you definitely shouldnt of

>if a card can consume 300W is only on heavy gaming, right?
dont think so. not entirely sure, but i think it pulls all that power no matter what, or at least somewhat close to that (like 250 when not under a heavy load/idling). Unless the card is set up to idle at low consumption and disable certain parts/features that require more power.

> is there a way to turn the video card off without opening the case
theres a way to choose what card to use, or set a preferred/default one, but i dont remember what it is. why not just unplug the power cable going to the card? it shouldnt be too hard, and if you post a picture of the inside of the pc people can help you find what cord to unplug
You should probably look this up, im pretty much pulling stuff out of my ass here because im too lazy to check it, so im probably completely wrong

So I've got an Ubuntu install that I installed from the minimal CD. I only installed the basic system utilities and I've got i3 and my normal programs set up. I'm try to get network-manager set up and running so I can use my VPN but it's being a huge pain in the ass. When I open the applet and create a new wired connection, I have internet access but in the network manager it shows that it's never been used. Whenever I use the CLI for network manager it shows that the ethernet interface is unmanaged and I can't activate a new connection. I'm guessing something else is managing connections but I'm not sure where to go from here.

Software like cpuid can tell you about your hardware. You need to know type of RAM (DD3 or DD4), speed, and timings. I think that's it. Stallman is the hero we need. An icon that shows us the right way. Imagine if there was no Stallman in this world. Nobody to stand up and say "skype is spyware". He is the honesty in this world. He says what no one else wants to say, because he isn't corrupted by money, he cares about morals. He is our savior. And we ignore him at times for convenience sake. But ultimately we know his way is the right way.

Oh yeah, i see the Egyptians did 5 scientific advancement, and the Christians did -20 scientific achievement, and modern science did +100 scientific advancement, so we can be pretty proud of that.

Hey /g/. I've been working on craigslisting a home audio system after my previous hand-me-downs failed. Right now I have polk audio ii monitor 30s, and a denon avr-4800, and still working on the turntable. I hadn't set anything up in a while, so I decided to try it all out tonight. I have an RCA to AUX Cable to test out the sound from my laptop/phone. However, once hooked up (what I think is) correct, the sound that gets produced sounds like a muffled laptop speakers with the volume turned all the way up, but half as quiet. If I try to turn it up any more, it clips and the receiver shuts off. I have no idea what the issue is. The banana plugs I'm using were supposed to come with some sort of clamp, but those are missing, but the little spike that goes into the speaker wire is still holding the wire in place, so I don't think that's the issue. What could be my issue here? I wasn't under the impression that the AVR4800 needed a pre-amp, but was I wrong? What the hell is going on?

Trying to get into cryptography so i'm learning a little modern algebra.

Pic related is the Cayley Table dihedral group of 8 elements (symmetries of a square). This doesn't look like any Cayley table I've ever seen (though I'm new to this sort of math).

It looks as though theyve dropped the header rows and columns, which makes sense as beginning the first rows and columns with the identity makes it clear what the elements are. But what are the red and white little boards above and to the left?

Also, why do we have numbers instead of the typical notation (I've seen r for rotation, s for flip about axis of symmetry, and all sorts of variants of the two, but never numbers)

In fact, there is a lot going on here I'm not familiar with. Can someone help me navigate what is being conveyed here?

If you read the tcpdump tutorial and you're left with no idea what the fuck you're reading, then you need to learn basic networking, (OSI Model, etc).

If you're not sure why tcpdump is related then https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc896 .

If you still have questions, you could try asking help at #networking at freenode.net
>>

>What is it actually doing?
It tries to reduce the amount of data sent for each bit of information by stockpiling data segments until it receives an acknowledgement from the last transfer.

>Why do some games say to disable it for better latency?
Honestly if you're sending data that small and don't need the 100% reliability of TCP you're better off with UDP (which is what most games use anyway).

Any tips? He's gonna be sending me the harassing e-mail address, content of the emails, and some possible culprits' info.
I figured I'd look for each one's social media, maybe find some associative trends in the email address (assuming its not completely random), try some possible passwords, etc. Mostly social engineering stuff.

You pretty much have one of the highest end Z97 motherboards, you cant upgrade from there.
The only other option you have is GA-Z97X-UD5H.
This motherboard will also limit you because 1150 socket only uses 10GB/s M2 , not 32GB/s UM2.

950 Pro runs at PCIe x4 so i doubt it will be a problem unless you are talking about bottlenecking your videocards.

I meant for new sockets, i'll eventually upgrade my cpu and board to LGA 1151, or perhaps whatever zen will take if it's any good. I just got this thing for a great price on kijiji used so I picked it up not knowing my m.2 drive was old so i'm in no rush in getting a full benefit

But yes I was talking about gimping my gpus, sli 980 ti, currently running 3.0 x8 x8
If i got the adapter it would run one in x8 one in x4
Is that possible or no?
Or I can have them run x4 x4 if it needs to be the same, i'm unsure. Bit i'm assuming it will mess up the performance
>>
>>54971085
If you add something else to the third PCIe slot it will run like this:
x8 x4 x4.
It will bottleneck it the second card and not sure how would it affect perfomance in SLI.

Compared hashes of an image I took with my phone on my computer, one transferred through Dropbox and the other through OS X's Photos application. Even after stripping the EXIF data with ImageOptim the hashes are different. Doing a compare with imagemagick also appears to yield slight differences. What gives?
>>

You still get the full benefits of random read which is the most important part of a SSD if you use the M2 slot, but sequential read will be bottlenecked by half (from 2,500 MB/s to +-1250 MB/s).

I AM SUCH A GODDAMN FUCKING IDIOT, FUCK.

Do you see this torrent? I dienloaded it on my laptop, and scanned it with mbam. Nothing. I then ran it even though it was a single .exe file namee "Setup", and as soon as I clicked "I accept the liscence teems and agreement" or whatever- BEFORE EVEN CLICKING NEXT OR WHATEVER- shit started downloading and my browser started loading webpages. it was at that moment i knew i had done fucked up.

i am currently doing a aystem restore to yesterday on my laptop but did i ever have any recourse? i ununstalled the first program that installed itself and i immediately deleted the torrent but another program installed itself and made a shortcut on my desktop and another gave me a popup supposedly from google, so, i ran system restore

... and, i see right now on desktop that it said it failed.... am i fucked

That means your HDD is fucked if you have to run that.

Related to your malware problem you have 2 options.

1. Go full paranoid and reinstall windows.
2. Try to rescue your current partition and be paranoid later on.

I assume you will want 2 so here are the steps.

Tell me what happens once you start windows, is stuff still installing? if so.
Windows 7 or 8.1?

my mom installed windows 10 on her laptop, and now its stuck on a loop startup, it tries perform a automatic repair and fails, the tries to perform a diagnostic and fails that too. it then brings you to a menu where you can start windows 10 (which it also fails to do, which then loops back into the repair and diagnostic loop), an option to reset this pc (i guess format? but i need to keep the files so i need the option to keep the files, which also fails). another option to go back to a previous build but that fails as well. is there anything i can do?

The TCP/IP stack was standardized and quickly adopted by the US government and major telcos very early on and as a result many applications and devices worked flawlessly with it. Other proprietary standards tried to take a share of the "market" later on (ex. AppleTalk) but failed because they were too restrictive by design and were redundant at that point.

Also devices using different network models cannot communicate with one another, which means for something as interconnected as the internet, you really have to pick one and stick with it(unless there is some compatibility built in, but I won't go into specifics).

chkdsk will take some hours, its literally reading every part of your HDD and checking if what is saved on it its correctly saved.

System restore reverts changes done to your OS, not the programs installed or files saved.
So its not.

You didnt needed the crack for HD Tune pro, you could have used a free alternative or HD sentinel.

It wont take that much, probably 4 hours tops for a 1TB HDD.
Also i have the feeling you fucked up something if you ran the CC cleaner wiper and cancelled/stopped it.

Never download cracks from torrents with no comments.

Also Adwcleaner, JRT and another pass of malwarebytes should get rid of most adware.

TLDR of it:
Remove stuff in the startup list.
Run malware cleaning programs.
Check if everything is OK.

Never download stuff from torrent sites that have no comments or that are new.
Always check the SHA-1 of the stuff you download.
Dont use piratebay, use kat.cr.
The last 3 things specially apply for cracks and ISOs, specially the SHA-1/SHA-256.
Cracks are usually keygens and stuff, not .exes/installers.

I would be worried you got some shady stuff in your PC rather than just adware but im just being paranoid here.

log into the web interface on one of those and take a look at the settings. See if there is anything that says something like wireless bridge, wireless repeater, etc.

Second option if there are no settings like that, look around for hacked firmware for the specific model number and play around with it.

Worst case scenario, get a long ethernet cable and route it through your house.

Well its only one night without your PC, unless you had something important to do there is nothing wrong while it can be fixed.

This is why everyone here always has a Linux USB/partition in case of emergencies.

I will repeat this just because why not.
Once you are done with CHKDSK run windows in safe mode, open the startup list and disable everything that looks shady.
Then download adwcleaner and run it, this will remove programs installed that are considered junk and fix your browsers.
Then JRT.
Then malwarebytes again.
Then open Speccy/Cristaldiskinfo/etc and post your SMART data, something is wrong with your HDD.

If you still notice problems, well you might have to reinstall windows since with shady malware you go full paranoid.
I would tell you stuff but it would probably just scare you so first thing first.

And it will be for a while.

It means it only will use DDR4 ram or DDR3L working at 1.35V, not at 1.5V.
DDR3 works at 1.5V, DDR4 at 1.35V.

How do I begin writing Java programs on Linux?

I worked with java briefly for a class but it didn't interest me much because it felt like c++ but with different ideas. I was on windows then and used some weird compiler+linker system that I can't remember. Now i'm applying for a job and need to relearn stuff for the interview.

code academy.

and you're better off learning Javascript than PHP if you want to think about future.

Yes, really easy till you start messing with encrypting and making your code hard to read.

Don't do it man. It's not worth it, if you have to ask you'd probably get caught unless you live in some shithole, you probably wouldn't have made any money anyway.

Run adwcleaner first.

it doesn't showup in msconfig OR ccleaner
>>
>>54973528
Malwarebytes free and premium are the same, the only thing that changes is the schedule scans and real time scans.
Its the same so dont worry it will.

You should have run adwcleaner first than malwarebytes since adwcleaner will need a restart.

But honestly i see your PC in a FUBAR state (fucked up beyond any posible repair) where reinstalling windows and doing a clean install look like a great option.

YEAH, for sure... I have twin encrypted flash drives holding the private data my friends've sent me... i'd've just encrypfed my entire HDD if i cared to keep my own shit private... this PC is pretty much fucked to me right now, but, I'll try everythinf I can to fix it as far as I can tell, because reinstalling windows and xferring 150 gigs of data off and on again would be a huge pain in the ass...

in the few seconds i had the internet on these nonsense-named programs managed to download, install, and enable themselves on os boot, but, i've disabled them and am hoping mbam will take care of them...

mbam took care of the one program i mentioned i apparently didn't have permission to terminate or delete, and one other i was able to disable on startup in msconfig..
>>
>>54973709
If you can install tinywall, it will stop stuff from downloading.
And adwcleaner.

You can keep trying to fight it but.
Honestly anon, your windows partition is pretty much gone, you will have to reinstall windows at this point.
It would be the smartest and safest thing to do.
This went from shady malware to rootkit really fast.

Atleast it wasn't cryptoware.

well, 4chan went down for a while there, but, i still have my post, so, lemme just submit it, though, its contenrs are exactly as you'd expect.

also, somehow the virus has hijacked some stuff in system32. i ran an mbam scan, it detected 3 of this, i rebooted, then it detected 2 of tnis. currently trying to find out if this hijack happens instantly after removed, or only on reboot, and if it ever doesn't happen on reboot... still haven't enabld internet on this laptop yet... not since i first rebooted for chkdsk

yeah... i understand... thank you for the suggestion in programs, though. i'd've installed thrm already and used them but am still terrified to enable my internet on this laptop...

i know this laptop is seemingly totally fucked by this point, but, all compromising data i have on it is imgur deletion links... and, everythihg is backed up online except my porn folder since i expand it everyday with daily tag searches...

i know my hdd is likely boned as is, but, i got nothing better to do right now...

but, i won't do anything compromising on it until, definitively, this shit is way over... if i can tell sucu a thing happening...

and, by the way, one of the programs with the weird name kept restarting after i terminated it in task manager... i don't even know how these 42 viruses managed to install themselves after mbam wiped what it could then rebooted the pc wirh my permission for the changes to take effect...

at least, after the scan in pic related and a eboot, mbam totaly wiped the contents of these weird-string programs that launch themselvee on os boot... i'm gonna ruh mbam again and hope it returns 0 viruses, and if it does, i'll enable internet and download the programs you suggest.... but, maybe i'll do so only in safe mode with neteorking, to be safe...

i keep getting "connection error" whenever i try to post...
