Any guesses for the gtx 1060/1050 filling the void of the gtx 750ti for prebuilt fags like me who have a low power PSU without any 6/8 pin connectors?

How much does GPU clock speed mean?

I'm currently browsing a card to replace my it-was-outdated-when-I-bought-it-in-2010 card, and cards in the similar price range have barely higher clock rate.

Probably not for quite a while

Clock speed is only good for comparing GPUs of the same type, if you want to compare different cards look at benchmarks.

K&R C is where you should begin. Learn the basics, syntax, pointers etc.

When you learned the language itself, then you can move to different APIs depending on your needs (WIN32, posix, opengl, gtk etc) and learn those to create useful programs.

oh, achieving this will certainly involve the use of unix pipes

i have a few ideas on how you could achieve this, i'm looking into it now

basically i'm thinking;
- start tar and have it output to a FIFO
- stream-record 4.7GB at a time from the FIFO
tar has multi-volume support, which might help here, but i haven't used it, so i'm still reading up on it
it should be possible to make a script which does exactly what you ask (run near automatically with just a prompt between discs)

It works fine when there are multiple files inside the directory but if i put a single image and run the script no conversion takes place. How can I fix that?
>>
>>54924828
Depends on the laptop.
Brand laptops tend to be kinds difficult to open, because you have to remove a lot of screws and stuff like your keyboard. As you said, though, there are a ton of guides, so it's hard to screw up.
The cleaning part is easy: get a can of pressurized air and blow air from the inside out to blow the dust away. If you want to be meticulous, you can also remove the coolers and clean them individually, but not too necessary imo.
Tl;dr look up how to open up your laptop and if you think you can do it, just do it; get a can of compressed air and blow away the dust. That's it.

I recently inherited a Bose wave 3, and it's pretty great sound wise, but the only problem is that everything on DAB is garbage. So I have the option of CDs (which I have a lot of, but they're single albums not mixes) or using my phone through aux. What's the best way of getting a lot of music on shuffle? I doubt a cd could hold more than 20 tracks, I'd rather have a couple hundred and shuffle between them like on my phone, but then I would have to go over to it every time I wanted to switch track.

All it does is speed it up, aka not 60fps,just doubling.

Is it okay to defrag an SSD if it's like over 50%?

If not, why?
>>
>>54927178
No you don't defrag an ssd because it wastes write cycles and is literally pointless since it's a solid disk i.e. no fragmentation. Your OS should send TRIM commands when needed but you can do that manually by using the software provided by the manufacturer (download from their website if not available) i.e. wear level count 9you can see this from the smart values as well to see if it has performed this recently).

looks like i've got something that should work
tested using cdemu (it can emulate writable discs)

using tar's multi-tape support with a fifo
it requires no temporary space, fifo's don't use any space

procedure;
start tar in one terminal, like this;
mkfifo /tmp/disc.bin; tar -cSML 4700372992c -f /tmp/disc.bin /usr

change /usr and tar's options to suit, except those that are set here
in another terminal, run this to burn the first dvd;
dvdrecord -v dev=/dev/sr0 /tmp/disc.bin

>Prepare volume #2 for ‘/tmp/disc.bin’ and hit return:
insert a new dvd, and repeat (run dvdrecord again)

tar xMf /dev/sr0 -C /extract/path

CPU reaching roughly 60C and GPU reaching almost 80C. Pretty noisy, but I probably get the impression by the noise that it will just blow up at any minute when it's not that bad.

Unfortunately the input is just a 3.5mm jack. I'll see if I have any DVDs with (a bit) of pure audio on them.
>>
>>54929429
it's an entirely different format, both physically and logically
you can't make a dvd in cd-audio format, because they're formatted differently
putting (non-audio) data onto a cd was a bit of a hack that came several years after cd's were first introduced
dvd's were data-only from the beginning, and don't support the way audio was put onto cd's

that and nearly all cd players only physically can read cd discs

there is a dvd-audio standard, but it's entirely different to cd-audio, and it didn't take off, so still very few players support that either
>>
>>54929607
Not sure how to deal with that with the CPU specifically (which is the noisiest, I have to raise the GPU fans to 70% to hear them and that lowers those 80C to about 65). I have MSI Afterburner installed and when not using custom fans it hardly gets past 40% fan speed.

I could also go grab some CPU cooler. Someone recommended the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo.

Is 23.6" too high pixel density for 4K monitor?

I wanted to buy one of these because I have a VM-ware running a lot of the time and will appreciate the extra resolution.

But I haven't experienced such a monitor first hand, and I wonder if the higher pixel density makes the pixels in the games appear too small so I becomes troublesome to deal with.

For 4k to even matter you need atleast a 28.

The so-called "router" is vague term, because it is most likely a network tool utilizing a lot of things i.e. DHCP server, gateway, switch.

If the "router" listens on port 67, then supposedly is DHCP server and will accept the message. Otherwise it will drop.
If the "router" is DHCP server then, depending on configuration, it will respond. If not, then as DHCP server it will drop.

However, the "router" is still a switch. So it will send broadcast to the rest of the ports for given (V)LAN.

Thinking about setting up a new home server.

Are there any downsides to using a refurbished rack server for this, like http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R710-8-Core-2-5-Server-48GB-RAM-2x146GB-PERC6i-DVD-iDRAC6-1PS-/191799283233 ?

>Main Laptop dual boots Windows 7 with Ubuntu. Windows 7 still boots and shuts down in less than 10 seconds off another SSD. 2+ years old
>Install Windows 7 on my file/print server for ease of use, and amazing Out of the box remote desktop. Server is always on. Had uptime of 3 months. Turn off server properly (about 10 sec for shutdown), remove a drive I was putting somewhere else. Server now takes 20+ minutes to boot from button press to desktop when it took no time at all before. Also on a Samsung SSD.

This is the 3rd time this shit has happened!! Is Windows fucking incapable of staying on for weeks at a time? What the fuck? I'm pulling apart the server to pop the CMOS battery and take the Ram sticks out as well.

Lastly
>Put in Windows recovery USB thinking maybe the boot files are fucked

nothing is wrong with afterburner. Just looking at the name of your GPU says that you're using an APU. AMD A4. On the A-series of chips from AMD, the graphics processor is part of the processor. The iGPU in those chips can't usually be overclocked via standard OC tools.

don't get me wrong I'm no beginner to Linux either. My server before this WAS linux. I was having problems with Linux accepting Windows clients at the same time other Linux clients. It would kick one off but not the other. That and there is no decent automated backup tool unless you want to dick around in the terminal through ssh once a week. And again I stress remote desktop. SSH is great and all until you need to view something that is only GUI capable. And again I stress the slow speed. On Windows 7 I'm getting a sustained 120MB/s LAN transfer speed while on Linux I'm lucky to see half that.

Not to mention the hell that is sharing a printer via Samba. No exaggeration I must have spent 10 hours googling fixes, tweaks, and work arounds to get a simple shared drive and printer "working" on a Samba share and the end result aws unsatisfactory for me. Plus my server goes ape shit with CPU fan speed in Linux compared to Windows. Linux makes the CPU fan dial up to 100% at random intervals. I just want a fire and forget solution. Linux is far from that.

Go to an already working PC with windows. Pop the disc into the cd tray. Download the Windows USB Tool from Microsoft. Make a USB bootable copy of the disc. Repeat above but now the install won't take 15 years.

Since I work with digital design would it be best to use a 1080p monitor to work with since most displays everyone look at(most common) has a resolution of 1080p?

I would like to get a 4K monitor, but heard support isn't there with a lot of software.

I already have a 1080p monitor and was looking to get a second one. If the same monitor, it'll be a side by side setup.

But if it is larger, I'll make my current one portrait and the larger one my main monitor.

Kinda narrowed it down to two main monitors at the moment.

I'd say no, and 1366 x 768 may be the most common PC resolution still.

But get a second monitor. Without one, you might as well have only a laptop.

Things like Roku and Chromecast are not subscription based except for the services on it like Netflix, right? My parents have a Roku that they bought through their ISP and they're getting charged $20 a month for some "premium channels" or something. I assume those channels are another subscription service on the Roku that they don't actually know about or need.

Are there any apps that I can use to save 4chan threads from Clover or whatever? I used to use pocket unfortunately, but I dunno if a recent update wiped my archive or what because all my saved threads 404'd.

I just need something to save them on so they don't 404. Maybe a good screenshot app if nothing else. Any help /g/entlemen?

The starter is in the fridge and hasn't been fed for a week so it's going to take a while. It's whole wheat btw.

The website itself is taobao which can be seen as Chinese mixture of Amazon and ebay thus the site itself should have no problem. There're also various guides on the internet that can teach you how to buy from it internationally. But like Amazon/ebay, what you would want to be cautious of is the seller. It look like the seller in the link is the manufacturer itself so I think it shouldn't have much problem.

it depends if you want skylake or not. I have a 4690k at 4.4ghz in my main build and a i5 2400 in my cheapo build. At stock speeds the difference isn't night and day. But the 4690k cost $200 and the entire computer with the i5 cost $150 :S

skylake performance hasn't wowed me. The only thing I've seen it do much much better than haswell is not be a spaceheater (they don't call it devil's canyon for nothing...) and the fact that it has support for ddr4. DDR4 support might make it worth it if you're building an entirely new computer. If you have fancy/expensive RAM you probably shouldn't bother though

Will the intel 3d xpoint memory replace dimm, making dimm obsolete and unwise to buy DDR4 platform now?
>>
>>54933802
DDR4 will eventually be replaced by something, but you can't use that something right now so just get what exists and you've already identified a need for.
>>
>>54933854
but 3d xpoint is only 1 year away from now right?
>>
>>54933890
Probably longer before you can get any. Buy RAM now if you need it now, otherwise don't. Since you're on /g/, you probably don't need a PC at all.

don't get an 8350. they are deprecated as fuck, I know the speed seems fast but they're not even good for the price anymore due to their terrible IPC. Also zen is around the corner, about to make them even more deprecated. For the same price as an 8350 you can get a slightly older intel i5 that will perform much better in games

let's try this again without quoting unrelated posts
Is there a way to force a page to show hidden attachments without logging in or having an account on that site? Or the permissions are all managed server-side?

I want to make a google account but I don't want to give them my phone number ; is there a way to receive a single SMS with a one use only trash number ?

I am trying to do a clean install of windows but whenever I try to boot from the CD it always takes me into my windows installation instead of the panel where I can delete and format the partitions.

The CDs that come with the Motherboard include Windows right? The one I have on me says

*Windows XP / 7 / 8
>>
>>54934058
I've never needed a phone number to make a Google account? Have you actually tried and are unlucky enough that it's required? Or are you seeing an optional field and just assuming?

T-they dont? or they do? Is this one of those cases where you say I am cute because I dared to ask whats probably obvious? Or is it the other way around where you ask it because I was naive enought to think they would include windows on their shit?
>>
>>54934205
Windows cost more than your motherboard. (In most of the case)
>>
>>54934058
If you are using the account on your android phone then their app can read your phone number anyway
>>
>>54934205
Motherboards do not come with an installer for the operating system which just happens to be the one you want to to install. You'll need to get a copy of Windows some other way. Windows 10 is about $90 if you want to go the legit route. Or you could upgrade a current install of 7 or 8.1 and it should be running a bit smoother. There's other ways to get it: https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Windows_10

If you go with 10, you'll want to disable a bunch of stuff for privacy, and get something like Spybot Anti-Beacon. That doesn't cover everything. The only surefire way to maintain privacy is with a free operating system such as GNU/Linux.

Nope, it seems it's required, I guess it's a new thing because I never needed a phone number before either.
(pic related) Basicaly it says "Nearly finished. You just have to activate your account to start using it."
