I am wondering if even the same gen will be better and cheaper if one waits for the 2016 holiday season.
Fatal flaw:
The Oculus software hates your freedom. It is not free as in freedom.
Minor flaw:
By calling it the "Consumer Kit", the product further corroborates the stereotype of the passive and powerless who willingly submit to the powers that be. It should be called "Citizen Kit" or "Mass-Produced Kit" instead.
>>52270727
what the fuck

The lenses make it look like you are looking into a large room. Virtual cinema screens are fun.
>>52270574
Even $500 is too much for the average consumer.
>>52270578
First they introduced the dev kits which were relatively cheap. Lots of devs got on board. Development on ports has been underway for a few years. Everyone is excited.
Today Oculus announced the final product which is so much out of reach for consumers that developers won't be selling many copies of their games. This means developers have been investing in technology not a lot of people will be getting anytime soon.
I think Playstation VR is having a blast today. Not only will that platform be cheaper and more popular, all the devs who have been making Oculus games will simply port to PS4.
VR of PC can still happen, but not with this price point and not with this approach. Clunky hardware, too many wires, terribly complicated setup, and not the price ($599 or €699).
>>52270730

It's not as easy as you think. Especially if your game uses DirectX and C#, it will be impossible to do it.
>VR of PC can still happen, but not with this price point and not with this approach. Clunky hardware, too many wires, terribly complicated setup, and not the price ($599 or €699).

I think the hardware reqs are fine, but they have to recognize that due to that the rift itself cannot be expensive at the same time.
The only good reason I see here, is that this is an advanced beta testing, and they dont want widespread adoption or many people would be pissed off.
They want people with the best systems to beta test this first, after which, they'll lower the price and claim some new "update" is allowing for slightly lower specs to work, maybe.

>>52271146
It'll fail simply from accessibility. first off, you would have to be totally braindead to buy the CV1 at that price, especially with the vive announcement at some point this quarter
secondly, hardware for game consoles [and new tech in general] has been subsidised and sold at a loss for years in order to encourage people to adopt. instead of doing that, they've basically marked it up by 100%, given what the developer kits (with their more limited production runs) cost. sony were selling the ps3 at 599 for a loss for years.

VAT will be charged on import, before you select a country they state $600 without shipping and without tax, after selecting a country it goes to the new price, and just says without shipping. No, that's not normal at all. If I order a rift I will be charger an import tax, I guarantee it, never have the tax to my country at import been handled by the foreign seller, that's nonsense. So that means I will be charged tax twice.

I'm getting my CV1 for free since I backed the Kickstarter at $300. This also means I have a DK1 I can sell, and the dev kits should continue to sell at a decent price since the CV1 is priced as high as it is. When all is said and done, I will profit ~$200 and have a CV1.
You want to call people with more discretionary income than you idiots and fanbois and Oculus assholes for charging so much. They're selling out and the wait list is already growing past 2 months. This means not only is the price not too high, but it could have been higher.
They are running a for profit business. If you can't shell out $600 for something that was $2000+ 3 years ago, you are not the customer they want anyway. Go buy a Samsung phone and cardboard box with some curved glass in it.

Is there a reason people are surprised by the price? Early adopters always pay the asshole tax. In 2 years when there's a better, cheaper version being released, then we'll see a broader adoption. $399 is going to be the magic number for the first real wave of VR adoption.

I can afford it but I still wont buy it, just because I can doesn't make this a good idea. Why pay more than they claimed for public beta testing? If I knew it worked bug free and with enough resolution for flight sims on day 1, I would do it, but I dont.
The only way I'd risk it is if it were cheaper, not a matter of affording it, just why waste that much on a possible blunder when it will be there waiting for me later this year for possibly cheaper?
>xbone controller
but why tho
They themselves have said repeatedly that a regular console controller is NOT a good solution for VR.
>>52271511
An important clarification is that this is not subsidized hardware - they're not making money on the software, but the hardware itself. Oculus does not need widespread adoption to make money - they're making money on every unit (in fact, I'd say at least 25-50% profit margin at this price). The fact that the wait time has already been kicked out to late May shows that they're selling easily.
If you havne't played the latest games/demos on a DK2, you really have no idea how awesome all of this is going to be, and the social aspect of this is going to be huge - which is why FB bought them. It's hard to imagine how this can turn into a huge social platform but have faith.

Yeah but consoles can be sold at a loss because that loss is reclaimed through owning the platform and claiming royalties on all the games that sell on it.
The royalties developers pay for their games to sell is where the console manufacturers make their money, and of course the developers of games just pass that cost back to the customers in terms of price increase for console games (this is why PC gaming is cheaper)
The Rift has no such ability to subsidise, but fuck knows why they've launched so high, the unnecessary built in headphones + xbone controller definitely hike the price a lot because the controller alone is an expensive piece of garbage.

>>52271687
DK1&2 used lesser hardware and was probably sold at cost to help drive dev adoption and expand testing. Now they're selling a better, polished device at a markup to make money (how dare they right?!?!?)
I don't care who else buys one. I've been waiting for an HMD since the Atari Jaguar in 1995/6 (fuck those guys) and would pay $2000 for the Rift without a second thought. The games/demos I've already experienced are amazing and I can't even imaging the non-gaming applications this will have.
Feel free to not be an early adopter - usually a smart move as there will be bugs and games/applications will be relatively few for quite a while, but the device is not overpriced. Anyone complaining that it is is butthurt because they wanted to buy one and now can't or won't because of the price.
Can someone PLEASE fucking explain how they were offering a dev kit for half the price when they were a start-up with no resources. Only incremental changes were made like going from 1080 to 1440 and slightly higher framerate (which is all thanks to the beefed up GPU requirement anyway) and suddenly the thing is twice as expensive even though now they are backed by a multi-billion dollar corporation.
You could say that they were giving out the DK at a loss to get people adopting it and developing for it, but I don't buy that shit.
>>52271909
CPU is good enough, I wouldn't worry about the USB either. GPU is not good enough im pretty sure, considering you have to push a 2160×1200 resolution at 90hz. A 570 won't be pushing that. I have a GTX770 and I'm worried myself that it isn't good enough.
>>52271724
a) portability - many games are already designed for control pad, making it easier to port to the VR platform
b) cost - Lucky said they got an insane deal from Microsoft and that you could instantly resell on Ebay at a profit for the cost that's added to the package
c) future VR input not yet ready and games will need to be designed specifically for them, increase time to market
tl;dr: better compatibility with current games/apps and most games/apps currently in the pipeline

Look, I don't care if you majored in math with 500k starting. That still doesn't change the fact that this rather steep price is going to hinder the growth of VR if only a few thousand people even own one. At a price tag of nearly $600 how is that going to encourage developers to work on it?
Ridiculous prices are the very reason VR wasn't able to catch on every time it was attempted, and breaking that trend is what the Oculus Rift was supposed to be all about.
What Oculus Rift should have been:

You guys keep forgetting that the average street guy does not own a PC that is even close to the required specs. Most of /g/ probably do but 90% of the people out there will have to add another $800-$1000 to the price tag.
>>52272711
>keyboard
>for VR gaming
not gonna happen
>>52272690
>People spend 600 dollars on smart phones every 2 years
>therefore, they will also spend 600 dollars on something completely different
flawless logic
>>52272644
some people have good jobs, even on 4chan
>>52272765
I'm just saying it's not outlandish to think that people spend a lot of money on things they don't need.
Ask random Joes on the street what their new $600 iPhone can do more than the last model
1) they have no idea
2) some will say it was "free" with the contract
Now with a VR headset it's much more obvious what it can do. Oculus will sell 100000+ at this price.
>>52271186
Tesla is operating at a loss, Musk just wants to bring the future on.
How does it feel to be left out of new technology because you're poor?
Now you know what 95% of the world population feels when you shitpost on your Intel Core i7
>>52272738
I'll bet on XBone having full Rift support at some point (especially after the controller deal).
>>52272763
>giant brick with joysticks purposefully placed in the wrong place
>for VR gaming
Fuck that, either use your keyboard and mouse or go with those Wiimote knockoffs, traditional gamepads are shit for nearly every kind of gaming.
>>52272792
I seriously doubt some faggot makes 250.000+ a year while spending his free time shitposting on 4chan
>>52272710
well, the techonology not being there = the technology cost $20k+
Rift has made effective sub $1k hardware, but more importantly, they've standardized and optimized the software/driver stack for VR
Also don't forget that the last 20% of development take 80% of the time and money.
The Rift CK1 has seen months of fine tuning over the DK2
>>52271547
smartphones are still subsidized for a majority of people who buy on the higher end
>>52272822
obviously you do not own a devkit
I do and I am telling you, keyboard is not viable in VR, gamepad is viable because you can hold it in hands while turning/moving around freely
there is a reason why Oculus decided to include a gamepad and why they demo everything with a gamepad, never with keyboard
the choice is between a gamepad and motion controls, kb+m was never a contender
>>52272826
You'd be wrong. I'm not the "I make that in a month" poster but I'm just under $250k/year. I'll hit that this year if I can push through my rate increase. Not trying to brag but don't assume just because some douchebag is on 4chan that they're not successful.
>>52272838
>standardized
>is proprietary
>>52272838
>well, the techonology not being there = the technology cost $20k+
not even $20k VR headsets of the past could compete with the Rift
the technology just wasnt there, at any price
>>52272884
>subsidized
It's called "credit". Do the math.
>>52272900
Standardized was a poor term, but they brought about driver optimization within nVidia, AMD, and DirectX to reduce latency, which will be used by more than just VR applications.
>>52272896
Just out of curiosity, what's your job, what did you major in, and how old are you?
>>52272490
wouldn't a dualshock then be for people with two midget thumbs?
>>52272964
No because you hold the DS controller further back. unlike the shitbox where you either hold it close or far. So it's either a super short thumb or a super long dumb.

Consulting Software Architect/Engineer
BS Comp Sci & Engineering

I run my own consulting shop (usually just myself but occasionally bring on some contractors). Tax benefits are great, e.g. buying the Rift is a tax write off ;)
>>52273000
if you hold it further back, how are you supposed to use the d-pad and buttons, let alone touch pad and other center buttons
>>52273030
Face buttons and D-pad are secondary buttons when playing FPS games on a controller.
99% of the time you have your hands on the two analogs and triggers.
>>52273060
but I mostly play JRPGS and fighting games
>>52273015
Nice man, and I thought I was doing well at 60k/year, but I'm only 23 so what do I know
>>52273068
Good then you use the D-pad and face buttons.
Which are positioned at the same position from your thumb.
>>52273075
Every time I think I'm doing well I come across someone who is crushing me. You'll never be the best, just keep chugging along. I made $45k/year in 2003 at 24 (in Manhattan, ugh) for my first 'career' job. Just stay thirsty for knowledge and hungry for advancement and you'll do well no matter what your field.
vr is neat and all but imo it's too limited to justify such a high price tag. vr software has to pretty much be designed within the constraints highlighted in chet faliszek's vr talk which means it's fundamentally incompatible with all games made up to this point.
>>52273150
>it's too limited to justify such a high price tag
>a new console is incompatible will all previous games so it's too limited to be successful
see how retarded that sounds?
>>52273227
yeah, you do sound pretty retarded.
imagine a console that could only play 1 genre of game. that is vr.
>>52273093
so then it doesn't matter where the sticks are if they're all in the same position
>>52273248
>confirmed for not having played many (if any) games/demos developed for the Rift
God damn you are short sighted. How did any modern video game get developed when we only had one button eight way joysticks on the Atari in the 1970s?
Oh, that's right, new hardware was developed and developers took maximum advantage of said hardware's capabilities. But you're a fucking moron so why am I explaining this to you when you'll forget about it 30 seconds later?
> 599$
> 699€
How's that supposed to work out? Do they want US customers to put them on ebay to get rid of warranty?
>>52273348
all games for vr will essentially be first person roomers. have you even listened to chet's vr talk? it's not about about creating a new joystick, it's about the mobility limitations of vr. it's neat and i bet there will be some interesting software made for it, but it has real limitations to what can be done for better or worse.
>>52273341
As long as they are symmetrical.
DualShock 4 and now the WiiU Pro controller are the only current gen controllers that are not shit.
>>52273414
>all games for vr will be [this one thing]
ok anon
>>52273431
>wiiu
>current gen
>>52273451
It's Nintendo's newest albeit it's the slowest but it's still in the current gen.
>>52273414
VR isn't just about gaming. FB bought Oculus because it sees its potential as a social platform. This is /g/, not /v/, after all
>>52273383
it's 599$ minus taxes. the final price is more or less the same.
>>52273441
educate yourself on the limitations of vr.
>>52273414
>all games for vr will essentially be first person roomers
They can be a hell of a lot more, coupled with either a controller or a steering wheel setup and you've got driving.
Hell once they get the motion control and haptic feedback devices that are just about as thick as clothes(gloves, vests etc) out to the market in a couple years, you could play pretty much any game with these.
And those are just the gaming application, think of the uses in training people with simulations of expensive high power equipment, think of the educational applications. There a hell of a lot we can do with this tech.
Also given the rift is facebook/social experience based, prepare for live streamed VR concerts, live streamed sporting events where you can decide what camera angle you want to look from and with the advent of 360 degree cameras, even what direction you want to look outwards from at a fixed point in space.

> the best car you can buy. period.
> 100% only for rich people and marketed as such.
>massive success and a perfect product to get Tesla into the game
>Tesla is now building massive infrastructure and is releasing a much more mainstream car soon
>Oculus already shown to work fine for half the price
>This is Oculus' end game, they arent setting up for anything big after this
>Developers were depending on this selling a lot so their games would too.
>They included a controller, headphones, a box, and the motion thing and thats the only sku.
>>52271023
I'd be find with $599 but IT DOESN'T EVEN COME WITH MOTION CONTROLS
I'm paying extra for a fucking controller I don't even need and I've already played a bunch of controller shit with DK2.
>>52273611
