I listen to a bit of everything, hence why I think neutral is probably what I would want

Only have a pair of sony MDR-V6s. I thought they were good in terms of ergonomics and sound (yes I am a pleb) but they have started to fall apart, so I need a new pair and was looking to possibly upgrade.

m40x is very much worth it, one of the best closed headphones out there. I think they're still on sale at adorama. also on ebay:

558/598 depending on which is cheaper, you can do the foam mod. 598 se is was on sale at amazon, might go down again or elsewhere but either is fine. it's going to sound different from the v6 though. less bass, less highs, more mids. it's extremely comfortable but not a straight upgrade, few things are compared to the v6.

I probably should have mentioned that it would be shipping to ireland.

Also what is /hpg/s oppinion on the mic that was bundled with rock band? I'm using it as a back up and the only problem is that sometimes it doesn't pick my voice up. I'm assuming that's because it's on the other side of my desk.

I would say just look in the guides but infograph links were not put in the OP and the wiki has none. huehue land is all fucked up with import laws and pricing. just see if you can afford a pro80, gemini hsr1000 or a creative aurvana live.

So outside that preference they are equal?
I quite like having neutral headphones, only considering 650´s in case they are any better outside just being warmer.

If they are just like the 600´s except warmer and with higher build quality I guess ill just ponder about it for a while or toss a coin or something.

I used sennheiser HD555s for the past 4 years. They were more than comfortable enough for me, if that means anything. I loved them, no complaints except for the fact that they finally broke.

Microphone guide is not relevant to a headphone thread.

$200 and under headphone guide is poorly made and quite biased.

$200 and over headphone guide is great but it can go in the wiki along with the other guides.

IEM guide is already in the wiki.
>>
>>51576929
>200 and under is poorly made and biased
Can you please elaborate more on that? I'm not a regular in these threads and I was mostly going by what it said.
>>
>>51576900
Build quality on both are the same, the HD650 has a slight edge in comfort and that might be subjective to some. The HD650 no doubt has the better cable as HD600's cable is kinda thin.

Maybe you'll prefer the HD600.

>>51576929
microhpne guide makes sense since anons always ask about it and /hpg/ is the closest to an audio general we have on /g/ and the 200 bucks and over guide is not on the wiki yet, so it shouldn't be excluded before it happens.
I agree that we had better 200 and under guides
>>
>>51576949
It does not include any Sennheisers and the maker of that guide is known for bashing Sennheiser headphones, I'm not a shill but Sennheiser has solid options under $200.
>>

As background noise? The real problem is to know whether it's due to the recording's poor quality or to the sound card's issue

How is going IEM biting the bullet?

the problem with the hd650 is that the added coloration vs the 600 exacerbates the veil. It just sounds overall muddier. the hd600 and most sennheiser already have a "smoothing out" characteristic. the hd650 takes it too far.
>>
>>51576858
Thinking of buying a sub for living room. Still researching.

>>51582895
I really don't hear the smoothing out characteristic people keep mentioning. Sure, more midbass generally means a muddier tone but the HD 600 especially has so little elevation there that it literally doesn't matter.

hd600, he400i, pm3, X2, that new massdrop fostex. hd600 and pm3 will be the most neutral. x2 and the fostex are bassy but not to excess. he400i is... planar sounding. flat bass and mids, dip in the upper mids, reduced but spiky highs.
>>
what are the best open neutral fullsized headphones 1k or under? amp/dac is not a problem, united states>>51583018
why he400i over s?
>>
>>51583032
Not the anon you quoted but if neutrality is what you want, HD 600. As for the Hifiman question, HE-400i has a better, more extended frequency response. Both are colored but I'd pick the HE-400i over S.
>>
>>51583032
the he400s is like the hd600, more mid-centric. It's good and some like it more than the 600 but the 400i is where you break into the "real" planar sound, with the ruler flat bass instead of the roll off the 400s and 600 and most open headphones have. as for what's best that is highly subjective, but expect hd600 evangelists to tell you it's the best headphone that exists.

Modding them to be detachable is a fun little project.

If you go for a 3.5mm socket over a mini XLR you don't need the rotary tool since it fits in the existing hole, but you want to close it up to avoid it acting as a port.

He might benefit from an amp depending on what on board codec he has now. Impossible to say. Likely there will be no audible benefit but without knowing you can't make that statement. K7xx isn't exactly sensitive headphone either although most modern codecs should drive it with ease.

New HD 800 measured by Tyll

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SennheiserHD800sn37477.pdf

That one has more colored sound signature than the two he measured previously. Distortion is still rather fantastic for an electrodynamic driver.
>>
>>51584085
i mean, as long as his computer doesnt belong in the same era youtube was created, im pretty sure that even if there was a difference, it's not going to be audible. it would be so small, you might as well write it off as placebo
>>
>>51584118
Yes that is likely. But it's also not unheard of to have poorly shielded and grounded on board codecs nor is it rare to see motherboard manufacturers putting resistors between the codec and the output leading into large output impedance. A discrete DAC and amplifier can be beneficial in some cases and getting one would guarantee that these won't be a problem now or in the future. I'll still advice against getting them blind without at least trying the headphones with on board outputs... unless the anon isn't too concerned about saving money.
>>
>>51584085

>>

any of those headphones would be a pretty damn nice jump in quality, yes. i should note though that the x2 isnt really neutral, just has nice bass but accentuated treble
>>
I, like probably many, bought the 598's for £75/$99. Do they need an amp or can I run it from the integrated motherboard audio (or maybe even a phone?)

They're 50 ohms, all of my current headphones have 32 ohm impedance
>>
>>51584971
its not a big jump in impedance. while impedance is not the only thing to consider when deciding if a phone needs an amp, it's a pretty good starting point. that said, most phones dont need an amp until they hit about ~200 ohms, so 50 should be fine from onboard.
>>
>>51584995
It's not something to consider at all. High impedance loads are easier loads.

>>51585091
So why do all the studio headphones have really high impedance? I thought higher ohms meant that it doesn't "absorb" as much of the power so you need to run it higher to get the same volume.
>>
>>51585130
>>51585158
oh my god
impedance is the combined resistance and reactivity the headphones present to the amplifier as an electrical load. high impedance cans will usually need more voltage to get up to a solid listening level, so they will often benefit from an amp, especially with portable players that have limited voltage available from their internal batteries.

source: high school degree
>>
>>51585158
tl;dr higher impedance means more voltage and less current and vice versa. Most headphone amps are voltage based
>>
>>51585170
Tell me how 250 ohm Beyers require more power than 300 ohm Sennheisers with your high school knowledge.
>>
>>51585141
I got the fake ones, then the real ones. Amazon has aggregated reviews, and many say they're fake only because they accidentally endorsed a crooked seller around August/September. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought fakes.

Got the real ones from TinyDeal, so they're probably legit from there.
>>
>>51585196
as i said with literally my first post, it's not the only deciding factor for whether a headphone needs an amp. i even used loose words like "should" and "most"

low impedance cans may require more current, and will lower the damping factor between the amp and headphones. so while low impedance headphones may be driven loud enough from a portable player, the quality of sound may be dramatically improved with an amp.

i literally havent said anything wrong. you did, by using words like "not something to consider at all." that's quite easily wrong, as even if the science didn't explain it, there's a correlation between the two
>>
>>51585243
The most important value to look at when considering whether a headphone needs a dedicated amp to power it is its sensitivity, not impedance.
>>
i got MDRV6 because they were on sale for $50

I would say the M50s fall into that category fairly easily. Beats cost 2x more, are made for a different demographic, and in practice have a very distinctive BOOM BOOM noise that the M50s do not have, so it's silly to compare the two. What are the "good" closed headphone in the M50 price range? HD280s? MDRV6/MDR7506? It would make more sense to post a bass comparison with those.

yes, but is it okay if people around you hear? or will not be in public?
>>

>twice the price
It comes with a separate, dedicated power supply instead of the cheap switcher than the LC has.

>looks like shit because EC like to use fucking home appliance dials as knobs
>caring about appearance than the actual sound

>is heavily shilled by SBAF/changstar
So does the LC in HF.
>>
>>51587117
HF shill anything and everything, that point is entirely moot.

How is youtube quality compared to FLAC?

I keep hearing about FLAC from a friend but I ususally just listen to music from youtube or pandora.

Am I really missing out on better quality somewhere?

My headphones are
Sennheiser HD 650
ATH M50X

It's literally THE Black Friday deal. I got my V6's for $40 or so US (shipped/import charged to Canuckistan for more, but still lower than regular US retail) on Black Friday 2012. Amazon no longer ships in-house-available electronics from US to Canada because that would cannibalize their insane gouging here. Else I would have bought more the next year...

My 7506's... I put out a flashy ad asking for used/broken pairs on Kijiji (Canadian Craigslist) and after a month or so got a bite. Got two pairs, one was "broken" (the wire between the two sides was cut, noob-level fix, but otherwise fine) and the other was "working" (looked new but had some bent/abused parts). Tore them down and mixed the best parts of both, got a perfect pair and a case full of spare parts for a third of the cost of new.

You will notice a bit with a good soundcard/DAC, but if you're "scratching an itch" to just listen, and not out to be analytical, you won't really care or actively notice.

I'm assuming you rip 720p video from YouTube at least...

Bang and Olufsen sound card.

When streaming I put it in 1080p but honestly I usually just get CD mp3s for my non streaming music listening.

Show me a study where somebody was able to determine FLAC from 320 with any meaningful accuracy

Turtle Beach X12 and PX22, like both of them because of thier comfort, and I thought the sound quality was good. The bass and treble control on the PX22's was a nice touch.

>I don't know exactly what it is, but the Carbon just feels better than the Magni. Something about the sound is just easier across the whole range. Cymbals are, well.. more real? Bass is different, I'm not sure if it's tighter or what, but it just sounds more like bass than the Magni. Quieter sounds in recordings appear a bit more forward and easy to hear. I was under the impression that there would be a tiny difference that I might not hear, but it just sounds more enjoyable than the Magni in all aspects. When it fully breaks in I'll try and do some comparisons directly. Or maybe I'll wait 'till I get a Gumby for that.

Thoughts on this, /hpg/?

>>51588309
Subjective impressions have absolutely no meaning.

Also
>When it fully breaks in
He's clearly an idiot.
>>
>>51588099
Don't worry, I can tell. Hehe.

For the record, I'm not some flac-obsessed autist. He's probably right that for general listening, you can't tell the difference between the highest level of mp3 and lossless. I have a few things in flac so I can re-encode from as good a source as possible for remixing, but otherwise not really.

But that wasn't the gist of what we're talking about here, is it? What I meant was that YouTube isn't the most reliable source of clean audio when compared to any good file on your computer (Also, iirc, audio quality on the 1080 and 720 videos is the same, but don't hold me to it).

>He's probably right that for general listening, you can't tell the difference between the highest level of mp3 and lossless
When can you tell?
>>
>>51587844
The YouTube AAC LC Codec is not flexible. You have the same quality regardless of video resolution.

How do Alessandro MS1s sound compared to what's new these days? I sold my whole collection once I realized how much money I was spending and stuck with these, they're still going strong after daily use for about 10 years. Haven't felt the need to upgrade, but just curious.
>>
>>51588618
I was going to say that was horseshit, but it seems that we're "both right". On a webpage, indeed the audio is now the same, but when downloaded or played in an external application, the old differences are back and rather significant.
>>
>>51588461
The only time you can tell is if a song has a "killer sample" very few songs have these and it takes a lot of work to pick them out.
People with autism find them and report them, that way people who update the codecs can refine them ever further to eliminate them.

>>51588461
320kbps mp3 sounds the same as FLAC, you have to drop the quality pretty severely (128kbps mp3) for it to be noticeable.
>not testing your mp3s on your hard drive and noticing some compression artifacts
>"rotational velocidensity" is real
FLAC is good for archiving but for portable use it's just a waste of space. Just convert it to opus.
