Posted this on /meg/, maybe a fitman can give his thoughts.

>been running 3x a week
>expecting to get a call for my contract any day now

>strained my LCL on an 18 mile run last week, can't do more than 5 miles before it starts to seize up and I have to walk it out

I've been doing my LCL stretches religiously and cautiously for the last few days, and they're helping a lot, but this is the worst possible time for my knees to suddenly get unreliable on me.

Are LCL strains normal? Should I stick to the elliptical until it's calmed down?
>>
>>42769189
Yeah, it's strained. I would recommend getting it looked at first but you need to go slow on it, ice it after you run. walk on your off days to get blood working through it and keep stretching.
>>
>>42769253
I showed it to a physical therapist friend of mine, that's the only reason I know it's an LCL sprain and what the correct stretches are. He only works with old people though, so he couldn't tell me how long I need to wait or if it'll ever get back to 100%.

Thanks though, taking it slow for a while seems like the right move.

I just went for my first run in years.

I've always been afraid of car bullies and I live in the middle of the country side where the roads have no footpaths and barely enough room for a car and half - so you can either run on the roads and dive into the ditch when a car comes by or run through the fields and potentially get shot. But today I found a little abandoned path, it was totally overgrown and the only buildings I saw were ruined houses.

It was great, the atmosphere was so nice. It was near the river so there was always the sound of running water. There was one part where it went right by the river-bank with the sky blotted out by leafy branches and you had to step over big roots.

I'm tired now but I enjoyed it.

picked pic related up a few months ago, really comfortable only downside is that i got a blister on my left foot the first few times i ran in them.
currently running 12 km a day, really want to run a half marathon a day.
>>
>>42769170
My standard routine is 4 miles four days a week in conjunction with squat days. Some times I go harder but I'm recovering a shin splint from a summer of 60 lbs weight vest 5 mile hikes 3 days a week. Bad idea. I buy cheap shoes and use dr. Shoals athletic inserts.
>>
>How many miles a week do you run
I try for 5-6 days out of the 7, this week is slacking due to work
>Avg time
Depends. I try to do 8km minimum, 5km if I am being a faggot and suffering. Long runs up to around 24km but I want to up that this week to compensate. Time is anything from around 40 minutes to over 2hours on the ground.

The more trail, the better. But I also run on pavement occasionally. Want to get back to doing one speed session on the track in a few weeks.

Questions to all you runners here:

1) I want to run a marathon in december (off road). Any training tips?

2) Advice on a running watch? I'd like to see where and how far I ran afterwards, how fast I'm going when I look at it, would like it to help with interval training (beep or vibrate or w/e at pre-set intervals) and it'd be great if it could also do cycling-related stuff.

started jogging, realized that I've been doing it wrong for all these years.

Thought you were supposed to hit the stride on your front foot, which gave me pain in my shin and calf but I thought it was mainly due to weakness. Then I just tried hitting the stride on the middle of my foot, which didn't give me any pain at all, neither there or in my knees. Now I just have to deal with

Always land with your feet underneath you. Your feet in front of your body is acting like a brake and all that shock is not going to distribute through your body and mess up your legs, knees and etc.
>>
>>42781468

I think I'm doing that, but I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm going on a jog.
>>
>>42781590
Took me a while too get the hang of it. Battery died on my phone listening to music and heard my feet clomping.

I was concerned with time, but now just go to enjoy being outside. Same thing with my breathing. I would breath hard even though I'm not physically tired. I try to keep my breath even, 3-4 seconds in/out.

I dont know if it's the correct way to breath but it works for me.
>>
>>42781468
I always have felt that sort of advice for newbies, "always land with your feet underneath you", isn't particularly useful. They start making too conscious of an effort to do it and they either end up making worse form mistakes or they hamper their speed. Unless you're planning on being a really serious runner, your form isn't really that important since you won't be running enough to get seriously injured. Even then it seems a lot of people don't pay much attention to form - haven't there been a few studies where they filmed people at various intervals of marathons and at the 8km mark 90% were heel striking and toward the end practically everyone was?
>>
>>42781832
>at the 8km mark 90% were heel striking and toward the end practically everyone was?
For most people, their goal is just to complete a marathon to cross it off their bucket list. I would love to find that one statistic that around 36% of people who complete a marathon never run again.
>>
>>42781832
The closer they get to mid foot striking the less chance of injury. For myself I always over strided like an idiot trying to go faster. Speed was my only concern.

Just start slow with a comfortable place. You can increase speed over time but if you run with wonky form it'll make it harder later on me thinks.

Never ran for exercise in my life before. I used to go on long walks when I was in high school and I really loved it. I'm not athletic in the slightest but I want to get right.

I want to go on 30 minute runs every single morning. Obviously I'm going to work up to that but it's my goal. I want to start every day with purpose. This is realistic, right?

I'm just starting out to and C25K recommends starting with a 20 minute mix of running and brisk walking which I struggled with.

Granted I've also been a heavy smoker for the past 2 years so maybe you would be able to jog for 30 minutes.

Biking improves running, remember that heart is a muscle that u use in both, also your vo2 is increasing as well.

I ride to work every day, make bike sprints instead of lunch, bike back home, go for a run

no harm done, remember what Piana says, if you sleep enough, eat well there is no such thing as overtraining. If needed take an icebath there and there.

I've jogged a couple times since and it was very painful.

Do you think I'll be a lot less sore next time I try it? I really don't want it to be the same.
Should I do dynamic stretches for like 20 minutes prior and static after?

Don't know about the style of stretches, but do a slow warm up, then do your speed work, do a cool down, then stretches. Ice might help, it seems to be getting popular.

I dont have mich upper body muscles as I've never trained it. I did bike and play soccer a lot as a kid and got into running when I was 18. I'm 22 now.
I'm doing a water fast so only drinking water for at least 18 hours. I'm honestly considering of doing 4-6 days fast every few weeks because apparently it gets easier every day but I'll first talk about this with a doctor.

>>42787780
I don't give a crap about muscles. I want to lose the sneaky fat stores around the organs called visceral fat. Maybe afterwards i'll put up some muscles but in my opinion i'd prefer to go first DYEL and burn most fat in my body. If fasting will help me achieve that goal then so be it.

How much do you feel it in your glutes when running?

If I run normally without adjusting my technique whatsoever I land pretty narrowly with my feet and feel nothing in my glutes.

But if I force myself to run a bit wider I can feel some activation in them, but I'm unsure if it's wise on a technical and injury-standpoint.
>>
>>42789239
I dunno how fast you need to be, but slow down a bit to an 8:30 (around 7.5mph?) pace and I bet you can run for much longer.
Your aerobic capacity will improve as you practice, and I don't see any downside to running everyday provided you don't push yourself to the point of injury.
I'd recommend doing some HIIT too.
>>
>>42790795
I need to run a 2.4k in 11 minutes, which is actually a 8.2mph pace, but I guess I'll worry about that on the day.

I know what you're saying. I could run at 6mph for 20 minutes but 8mph really takes a toll.

If I run a 2.4k every day do you think I'll over do it? Or perhaps run it every other day?
>>
>>42790850
>If I run a 2.4k every day do you think I'll over do it?
Nah, 2.4k isn't very far. You'll be fine, just do it and you'll be better before you know it.
Have you tried doing sprint intervals instead of just a straight run? If you don't get much enjoyment out of just running a couple of miles, this is a good alternative and it'll still help you improve your longer distance times.

I used to run pretty frequently, but for the past 7 months I've been a weightfag with very little cardio.
It's hard to say as someone who's always been skinny. When weightlifting, the results are a-lot more visible even after a short amount of time for skinnyfags like me.
It really isn't the same with running. If I'm running, I'm still skinny with the most visible results being my lower body.
Also something about hitting a PR with heavy weights seems more exciting than going a mile further or making a better time imo.

I just started running a couple weeks ago. I've always avoided it because I was really bad as a child (like I would legitimately pass out after doing a mile run in PE) but I decided to try it again. This week so far I've done 2.5 miles four times. Trying to work up to a 5k.

Carbohydrates are not bad. We all know that. What I am saying is that I lost weight by restricting calorie dense foods which included fats, flour, pastas, breads.
Shorthand way of saying it: I cut back my carbohydrates (and other stuff).

>cardio now increases
>carbohydrate increases

And I have watched stupid family members go on fad diets that restrict calorie intake in the form of restricting fats, carbohydrates, a bit of fasting, "red days, "green days", a shake for breakfast (rather than address food and lifestyle choices).

It's bollocks.

And these dumb family members have bounced up and down between reasonably healthy weights to over-weight to obese. Why? Because the course of action they have taken is not sustainable. Much like the course of action fasting fasting-faggot is suggesting.

Cut out all animal products and all processed food, go high carb, and it will be impossible not to lose weight.

Not sure how many miles I run per week.

Last clocked time was 3.25mi at 24min in a triathlon sprint (good enough for 19th fastest run time).

Pic related. Altra has some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

I am primarily a trail runner, but will road run during races. The trails near me are sand and it is absolute bliss for my joints.

Looking to get into mountain running.

Any mountain runners here?
>>
>>42784974
I use trail running shows with absolutely no support and I'm fine, just don't run on hard surfaces without support.
>>
>>42804175
Why? I wear minimalist shoes once a week and it has not caused any problems when running on pavement and concrete.
>>
>signs says no pets

>>42804840
Because it's harder on your feet, that's it.
Running shoes are made not just for speed but for taking some of the force when you hit the ground, protecting your knees and shit.
Using minimalist shoes on hard surfaces wear there lifespan and your body, you might not be overly affected by doing it as little as once a week but it's better to have shoes suited for their purpose.

>How many miles a week do you run
About 20 right now in 3 runs. In a few weeks I'll switch to one 60-120 minute run a week and add in a weekly hill sprint workout and a weekly 600m repeat sprint workout

>Avg time
About 9:00 minutes/ mile. I read that for general fitness it is better to keep your bpm low during long runs and only add intensity during HIIT workouts.

>Shoes
Some nikes I got on sale for $60.

>Favorite paths/routes
Down by the river. I have an area that is flat that I run back and forth on till I hit my time goal. It is nice and not too crowded.

I was diagnosed with this when I was a kid, but I figured it was some made up bullshit.

A few months ago, I decided to start running, and I could barely go half a mile at a moderate pace before feeling like I was going to die. But I kept at it, and now I can run a 5k in under half an hour and a 6 minute mile. I think exercise induced asthma is bullshit. I think we just need to exercise more, bro.
>>
How do I actually improve cardio, beyond just 'keep doing it'?

I started running home, 2 miles, 3 times a week, for the past month or so. I was intending to work out a 5k route once I get used to it, but I don't feel like I'm improving much - muscles maybe, but no real cardio improvement.

Do I need to do more distance? Push to run faster than I'm comfortable with, eg. interval training?
>>
How dangerous is ebay?
I see Pegasus 34s being sold at half the price, the seller's feedback is almost 100% and it's public so you can see the reviews.
Still sketchy due to the price.
>>
>>42806060
Add more distance first. If you have a hard time, continue to do the run/walk/run thing c25k has you doing. After you add more distance (I usually say 5-6 miles non-stop), then do not only intervals, but tempos as well. At the beginning, you'll want to only do one speed drill a week. Alternate one week doing tempos, then the next intervals.

>>42796660
I ran down a main street. It's more of a pedestrian only walking area. And there's an actually speed limit. It was fucking empty at 3 in the morning. I guess the cop girls where passing by and decided to fuck with me. Stopped me all protocol like, asked for documentation, asked why I was running shirtless in a walking zone at night, told me they'll let me of the hook this time, but next time they'll do a full cavity search for drugs. we kinda laughed it off. Nothing special. I think one of them might live in my neighborhood

Shoes are designed to absorb impact, protecting your body.
Bad shoes are obviously not as well designed for this function.
Do what you want, a lot of 40 year olds who've run all their life usually have bad knees because they fell for the "shoes don't matter" meme.

There are multiple ways to train, using speedwork, long runs, intervals, etc. If you want to try a short vanilla plan then check out Higdon's Advanced 5k. It's free on his site and only lasts 8 weeks. It uses tempo, intervals, moderate short runs, and a slow long run.

I don't run, but I figure this is the best place to learn about carbs.
If I want do small carb loads 2-4 hours out from my workouts should I be eating mostly foods that are high on the Glycemic Index? Also is there any risk to using glucose tablets as a supplement?
>>
Gonna be a retard today and run 2.5 km x 10 with 40 minutes rest between each 2.5 km.

In my infinite wisdom I concluded that my technique breaks down vastly after 3-4 km of running because I have weak ass glutes, hamstrings and core-muscles and that increase the risks of injury.

Thus running 2.5 km I can maintain proper technique throughout the run.

Up the pace, change the duration. Go with someone else. Focus on your form. I used to think it was boring, but now I go to get some fucking peace and quiet and to be alone.

Either that or use the time for deep self analysis both mental and physical.

Get reduction surgery if they bother you that much. I've always exercised (not necessarily run, I just picked it up several years ago being bored of both cycling and swimming) and I think that maybe part why I have small breasts. My sister and mom are in the D-cup range but they don't exercise at all. Infact, both are lazy chain-smokers who constantly advise me that I have an eating disorder despite that I consume more yet keep a healthy weight. They are the ones on cholestorol and blood pressure meds whereas I am on none. It's funny how denial works. My brother and dad laugh at them so much behind their backs.

Then use it as motivation knowing that the faster you run, the faster you perceive time.

Just got back from my Sunday run (my one "long" run a week).

I did 6.2 miles in 40 minutes flat. I was dead by the time I got back.

How do I pace myself better? Whenever I run longer distances I just run what feels good and I did that today but the second half was really hard. My average pace was 6 min 33 s, but the second half I slowed down significantly, the first half had to be close to or under 6 min miles. Guess I need to work on pace.
>>
>>42812602
you kind of answered your own question there, pacing for distances just kind of requires you to be accustomed to that distance, which means running at that distance more

>>
>>42819834

So you did this:

5 min walk
2 min jog
5 min walk

and you're dying?

That's pretty bad desu senpai. I would expect even an old lady to do that no problem. When I started running I was doing 2 miles in 14 minutes and I didn't have any kind of athletic background besides some lifting. Was a bit lighter than you though.

Try doing ankle circles to warm-up if your ankles bother you. Other than that just keep at it. Assuming you're a healthy young man you should make very rapid progress if you're that out of shape.

Cardio is an essential part of being fit. Plus it makes you good at plowing chicks.
>>
>>42819916
it's like i said i did no cardio at all with my lifting. the big reason why i wanted to start running over anything is because of how quickly you can build your stamina over easier cardio. i feel like i was getting winded doing regular lifts once i hit a certain weight on them all. i want to get better and i think training stamina will help big time.

one step at a time, but 9 weeks ain't too bad provided progress never halts.
>>
>>42819421
>things to eat post run?
Nothing special until you start going longer. Just work through the C25k bit by bit. Keep your fluids up, stretch calves, glutes, hams etc, google around for that there are vids. WORTH it because otherwise you will curl up and die.

TL;DR look at C25k. Go easy with it if starting. IF you like it after a couple of times out (you feel it is something you can into) get fitted for shoes.

At a shop that does that fitting shit. Sport place.

Take it easy, up the miles a bit, watch your form, youtube videos are good, get into it and enjoy it.
