/plg/ powerlifting general

I present to you Dino's laughable arm edition

yes sir, the claim that he is running a novice program is very much proven by this visual evidence of an arm that looks like it hasn't touched a barbell

Pls respond, could front squatting 5x5 every other day work or is it a guaranteed fail? I'm tempted to try it.

It's either 3x3 or 5x5 I'm not sure yet.

>>
>>41602398
he loss 1 rep by a referee on the viking press.

and it didnt matter cause fat hall will win anyway even with that
>>
>>41602408
Front squats aren't that damaging. Plenty of WLers squat/front squat more than that in a week. Do some back squats though, nigger.
>>
>>41602414
>and it didnt matter cause fat hall will win anyway even with that

why do you keep saying that?
>>
>>41602398
judges didnt count his last rep on viking press even tho it was good. if he got 15 he would have tied with eddie and won overall. except he wouldnt have because eddie had more in the tank and only did 15 because it was what he needed to beat thor
>>
>>41602408
you should just focus on back squatting better. slow your reps down. do pause reps. and play around with technique
>>
>>41602432
read >>41602433
>>
>>41602433
>xcept he wouldnt have because eddie had more in the tank

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyB_LrHm9oU&ab_channel=StartingStrongman

objectively incorrect, his last rep was clearly all he had left not to mention time ran out when he got that one
>>
>>41602451
read
>>41602452
>>
>>41602452
he was barely using leg drive, the rep was easy. he let the timer run down because he knew he didnt need it
>>
>>41602452
t. halfwaytocry I mean halfthor
>>
>>41602477
you're fucking delusional, he didnt let the timer run out, it literally just ran out when he got his last rep, why the fuck would he wait around and waddle for 20 seconds between that rep, if he had more in the tank he would have got the 15 with 30 seconds on the clock then ran away, that did not happen, he clearly couldnt have got another one even if time permitted, which it did not

also he clearly used all the leg drive he had it just isnt as noticeable as thors because he has short fat stubby legs
>>
>>41602510
he had a long pause after ~11 which he didnt need. and have you seen him to yoke press in training, or other comp presses. he can get a huge amount from leg drive/ momentum. he just didnt need it here
>>
>>41602492
Im just looking at it through an objective point of view
>>
>>41602384
He wished, unrealistic goals so he committed sudoku
>>
>>41602542
>which he didnt need
if he didnt need it he wouldnt have fucking taken them, he would have jst done the 15 then walked off, not nearly collapse on the ground and shake the weight up all the way

>he just didnt need it here

he did and he used all he had
>>
>>41597912
Do some lighter deads if you don't like cleans. Like 2-3x5 stiff-leg deads, or a few speed deads. Or maybe good mornings. Something more hammy related than just adding more rows.
>>
>>41602551
a dumb point of view. its very clear he was playing a points game. thats how these comps work. you do the minimum reps to be one ahead of your opponent
>>
>>41602589
yes you can play the points but this was an instance where he gave all he could to get the points he needed, the minimum he needed was his maximum
>>
>>41602575
have you actually seen his other presses. he uses his whole body. if he needed it, why didnt he use the full extent of his ability? and he took the break because he wanted to do the bare minimum and save it for the next event. consecutive reps are more taxing
>>
>>41602610

why would he have waited to the very LAST second to do the last rep he needed, if it was easy he would have done it with time remaining then walk off, not wait to the last second as shit could have went wrong, grip slipping etc, he wouldnt have taken that risk unless he needed all the rest he could to do that last rep he may or may not have had
>>
>>41602597
look at his other presses. that isnt what his max effort press looks like
>>
Anyone seen decent gains from pairing nuckols squat and DL 2x routines?
>>
>>41602629
cockiness
>>
>>41602635
yes it is, I'm sorry but ive seen lots of strongman events where if they needed a set amount of points they get it and then walk off with time still on the clock, not once do they wait to the last millisecond to do the one important rep they need unless they were gasssed to the extreme
>>
>>41602653
someone who is cocky would do 15 reps in 15 seconds then walk off not look like they were struggling and needing 20 second rests lol fuck off delusional britcuck

>>
>>41602578
Okay, thank you. From what I understand, the benefit of olympic lifting in routines is working on building explosiveness. Will I be missing out a lot if I don't do any?
>>
>>41602792
You literally have a beer gut
>>
>>41602907
Not too much, from a powerlifting or general strength or aesthetics perspective. The olympic lifts and/or plyometric exercises are primarily for strength training for general athletics, people who need to be strong AND explosive. Which isn't powerlifters, people who train for "fun" or a hobby, or people who just want to be bigger to look better. For those people, alter the program, make the substitution. the main issue with the listed program is that you want something pulling, that is either assistance to the dead/squat or works many of the same muscles, BUT at a lighter intensity and workload than deadlifts. Hence the choices I laid out.
>>
>>41602988

When should I reaaally wear a lifting belt?
I told myself i wouldnt buy one until i can squat 3 plates. Or should i wait longer?

Wrist wraps? Yay or ney?
Don't really have wrist pain or anything, barbell is basically always over my wrist, but should i cop and if so, whats a good length/brand?

Knee sleeves?
When would i need them? Not injured or anything, obviously not lifting a huuge amount of weight yet, so when would be a reasonable time to start using them?

Last one, I currently squat in converse and i dont feel anything wrong, should i even bother with squat shoes when the time comes?
>>
>>41603389
belts are unlocked after 450lbs
wrist wraps are unlocked after a 330lbs bench
>>
>>41603418
So you dont use either?
>>
>>41603389
>Belt
Whenever you want
>Wrist wraps
Whenever you want
>Knee sleeves
Whenever you want, they're not necessary for anything but they make your knees feel comfy
>Squat shoes from converse
Squatting in heels vs flats is up to the person, I prefer squatting in heels, regardless of bar position. Others might not.
>>
>>41603437
Nice projection Dino
>>
>>41603437
Ahahahahaha
>>
>>41603389

It's more about the %'s you are lifting that the actual weight.... if you are going for a new RM in the 1-5 range, you can wear a belt, albeit, you will look like a shit cunt if your 1RM squat is 205 with belt.

Also.... don't use a belt to compensate for shitty form or a weak core. Record yourself or have someone more experienced watch you squat/DL etc to determine this.

>>41604230
Inzer or Titan for US and ipf approval. Prong or quick release for easy adjustability, lever or quick release for ease of taking it on and off/cranking it super tight, prong or quick release for a much lower chance of breaking/less need for maintenance (lever has screws and various bits that can fall out or come undone). 13 mm has extra support, 10 mm interferes with your positioning less (usually for deads), however there's no guarantee 13 mm will mess with your positioning. I'm a fat fuck and my 13 mm Titan longhorn lever has not messed with my mobility or positioning at all.
>>
>>41604343
why even bother telling him about prong or lever when QR is objectively the best option. its the only one that forfills literally every desired criteria

Iirc, Titan only offers QR with 10 mm belts. Not sure about Inzer but I'd assume similar, if they even offer QR. Plus no matter how much you might like QR, others still might prefer lever or prong more, for whatever reason.

I'm teaching my buddy how to lift. It's going fairly well. But he has kyphosis and cannot hold his arms above his head. Anyone know how to fix this and what to do with programming until he can do OHP?

>1rm squat is about 3 pl8

>mfw did it yesterday and it wasnt even hard

also, tips on elbow / bicep tendon stress during low bar squats? i noticed stretching pecs helps a bit (only left side hurts me ever) but its also very reliant on my palm placement
>>
>>41608914
Remember to flex your wrist slightly so that the bar is actually pushing against along the bone and not just falling backwards pulling your whole arm away from your back. Maybe remember to tighten upper back more? Helped for me both.
>>
>>41608912
i think fuckton of rows and he has to fix his posture

i have shit posture myself because >vidya for 22 years

he might have garbage shoulder mobility tho

>>41608928
Alright. I'll have him try out some rows and start pestering him just a little bit more about being conscious about it.
>>
>>41608980

>>

>>
>>41608988
Thanks, I'll forward this to him.
He probably has bad mobility too, but he can almost get in proper back squat stance so it shouldn't be completely shit. It's just the kyphosis and probably forward rolled shoulders and stuff. He doesn't seem to understand how to tighten the muscles in his upper back. It took me two weeks to make him use his glutes even.

Is adding some bodybuilding/pump sets of leg extensions and leg curls to TM ID or RD a bad idea? Will recovery be impeded too much? Cheers
>>
>>41609649
If you want to do more bodybuilding, do a different program, or reduce your progression or working maxes. Otherwise you'll stall hard on TM
>>
>>41608912
Shoulder dislocations, lat stretching using a straight pull up bar, pec stretching and chin ups should sort him out

>>41609674
I have been on the TM for almost a year and have seen incredible strength gains. I'd rather keep improving and am not interested in bodybuilding enough to sacrifice that, just wondered if TM could be tweaked that way (added fronties to ID 3x3 which worked ok)

They aren't going to accomplish much, and leg extensions are a handy way to give yourself tendonitis at the knee.

You mentioned doing front squats. Those are better. If you've got the energy to do SLDL after ID or VD, and you can recover from them adequately, they'd made for a better hamstring/glute exercise than leg curls.

I would say as a general rule of thumb NEVER put your hands on the smooth. Those angles are really bad for your wrists.

Apart from that, I go about a small hand in. Normal grip for me is ring fingers on rings, close grip is a finger's worth of space between rings and my pinkies.
>>
>>41610976
that is just wrist hurting bench press.
a 'real' CGBP is with your hands in line with your arms/shoulders. Keeping the elbows tucked in is what utilizes your triceps the most.

Been cutting for 2 months now, down 6kg and my strength, especially upper body is doing poorly.

>>41611552
I'm assuming they did 1RM first. It was a competition between him and some other guy. Otherwise it'd be retarded. Just watch the first guy and do 1 more rep. I doubt Tom would do 23 reps when his opponent only did 12 unless it was at the end of the event.
>>
>>41611497
Hes a bodybuilder that never worked with low reps. If he worked with lower reps for a 12 week training cycle his squat would have been a lot stronger
>>
>>41611497
Rep calculators are based on an average, and usually that average trainee runs across the rep ranges 1-10 or at least is somewhere near the midpoint with a lot of training. In that way they're similar to the running "race calculators" which assume someone is training for both the 5K and the marathon in terms of the conversion (because those people are the base for the calculator's data).

People who work exclusively in very low reps, or very high reps, don't train the capabilities for the other rep range as much as people who do 5s or do a mix or reps like most programs have (some higher reps, at least for accessory work). He probably never or nearly never trains a weight that needs rate coding in order to lift successfully.

CGBP in my opinion

in my experience close grip carries over to my overhead press and every other pressing variant, whereas OHP doesn't carry over to anything (it barely carries over to itself, please put a bullet in my GDE head) and pinkies at rings + width bench doesn't carry over to overhead press or other presses as much

Are you benching without the slanger as well? Id recomend programming your bench press normally aa if your shoulder was all good. Then break out the slanger whenever your shoulder gets angry.
For example if you programmed a 5x5@75%
You could do the first 3 sets then, if you felt some pain on that 3rd set, use the slingshot for the last two.
Does that make sense? Im typing in between high rep diddlr sets so this could be gibberish for all I know

Is it ok to run different routines for different lifts? I'm a weak presser, so want to alternate bench and OHP every workout, 3x week, like in SS, but using something like 5/3/1 progression for each lift.

However, I play a lot of sport so want to reduce my lower body volume, so am going to follow Greg Nuckols' 2x week intermediate squat routine, and 1x week DL routine.

If this doesn't work, what's a good 3x week routine that focuses more on pressing (both bench and OHP), with occasional DL and some squat progression?

tl;dr - Can I do 5/3/1 for Bench and OHP and a different progression for squat + dead?
>>
>>41610933

No problem. I don't know why it didn't cross my mind earlier, but I realized that glute/ham raises are a MUCH better way of accomplishing the same shit leg curls do. You just need a solid Roman Chair to do them in.
