>What are the benefits of fasting?

Autophagy. Based on new understandings of the physiological functions of autophagy we now know that both basal levels of autophagy and stress-induced increases in autophagy are likely important in promoting mammalian health Definition: basically, you stop eating and your body says "hey bro where's the food at?". At this point your body says "well I can either starve, or eat something I don't really need that I already have!". The body then looks at the following: old cells, dead cells, fat tissue cells, etc, and says "well I could eat this".

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2696814/

Note that this process does happen when you're eating, but fasting GREATLY speeds it up.

>Common myths

You will not lose all your gains. In the history of fasting

>Can I exercise while fasting?

You can, but not strenuously. Muscle ketone oxidation decreases after 1 week of fasting, along with decreased overall energy expenditure(page 144-152 of Burstztein S, et al. ‘Energy Metabolism, Indirect Calorimetry, and Nutrition.’ Williams & Wilkins 1989). If you exercise hard and push for PRs on a 7 day fast you'll essentially accelerate muscle wasting.

>Won't I get water poisoning?

A healthy male would have to binge on close to 3 gallons of water within a few hours to get fucked by water poisoning. If your urine turns brown go to the ER.

>How long is an optimal fast?

Depends on your willpower and bodyfat. Since you likely eat every day, you likely have quite a bit of fat reserves to burn. During fasts, soft fatty adipose tissue lipolysis is known to reach a MAXIMUM within the first week of a prolonged fast as does hepatic ketone production.

>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/5024045 <- Adipose tissue lipolysis 1 week max

Here's what happened on my 4 day fast

-Allergies cleared up (Ill update if they come back)
-Went to sleep at 11, woke up at 6 am energized AF ready for the day
-Lost 10 lbs of weight (Half is prolly water weight, but I expect not much since I supplemented my fast with lite salt) -> went from 198 to 188
-Broke the fast with veggies, they were godlike.
-Stopped craving carbs on day 3

>BUT FASTING WILL CANNABILIZE MUH BICEPS AND ILL DIE

No, it won't. The biggest protein loss comes from (safe) secretions from your intestinal lining and pancreas, which tapers off as you continue to fast.

After a short burst of protein secreted from those organs (around 75 g of protein) -- your body will use about 20 grams of protein, that's about 20 days to waste an entire pound of muscle. Now compare this to the fact that you can lose up to 114 to 159 grams of fat a day and you got yourself a good ratio.

>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22414/ <- This is what happens in your body when you fast
>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26399868 <- Studies of non-obese men during periods of heavy caloric restriction
>>
>>41544700
PS, the 114 to 159 grams figure is likely wrong, and it's more. if you're a smaller person you'll burn more towards those numbers.
>>
>>41544682
Its because it will. Go ask anyone who is a sports sciene/nutrition professer at your local community college or find some one who is. Dont listen to anyone who says it wokt because they will just link you some study with sick people/shit sample size to sway your opinion. there have been NO studied done with bodybuilders regarding mass kept if you fast for long peroids of time. You will lose muscle mass, water, and fat but its not heathy to do that because after the fast you either binge or eat so little your hurting your gains brah. you need to learn to eat a healthy diet, not fast to solve your body issues.

So you're telling me getting an ibfection and not being able to eat for 12 days now and only be able to consume 1,5lof fluids a day is a good thing for my body? Because I look like a fucking sickly skeleton now.

Well let's say autophagy really is a good thing. After how many days do you think the bad effects start to outweigh the bad effects? Assuming we're talking about a decently lean healthy average human.
>>
>>41544741
Homeostasis describes the tendency for your body to maintain a steady state. Generally, it likes things just the way they are. Your body does not want to gain or lose weight and there are certain biological mechanisms for maintaining this dynamic steady state. At any given point, your body will be in either of two states: an anabolic state or a catabolic state.
>>
>>41544721
1 gram of fat is about 9 calories, divide that with your weight maintenance calorie count and you have an approximation. Example for me is 2300/9=250grams

>My sister told me that fasting will cause damage to my organs and brain, can someone link a study or something that show that it doesn't

Organs won't start taking damage until you're out of body fat. Though low levels of electrolytes are dangerous for other reasons, like a heart arrhythmia that could kill you. Or being horribly dehydrated so you wreck your kidneys. Or having low calcium so its leeched from your bones.

The brain is not optimally fed on ketones, so function might be impaired, but I don't know about damage.

Don't do this, you'll just yo-yo back to your fat selves. Slow and steady is the key, a 500 kcal deficit every day will minimize stretch marks and almost completely eliminate the possibility of a yo-yo effect (if you're keeping your diet in check)
>>
>>41546722
Why would it minimize stretch marks? I thought they're just scars left from tearing your skin after it has to spread too thin over your massive blob of a person. Do you somehow get them while shrinking too fast as well?

Genuinely curious

I'm doing a 5/2 fast and don't eat on Monday and Wednesday. Down 18 lbs. to 212. Approx 15% bf. I eat like shit and drink a lot on non fasting days and its still working. About 6-8 weeks in.
>>
I've been losing a lot of hair along with the fat.

Any way to stop it?
>>
>>41546906
No

If you are healthy and normally nurished you can go 3-4 weeks without food.

A week is nothing for a fast. Though if you don't drink enough water you'll be dehydrated easily.

I'm personally doing 7 days fasts with 3-4 day breaks of eating light. Exactly because I'm not good at guzzling water. If I supplemented sodium though I could go longer. But I'm not in a hurry.
>>
>>41546981
That's what I intuited, but I see so many people in these threads and on other forums being overzealous with the iodine/sodium in particular, and often magnesium also, i.e. supplementing whenever they reach ~day 3.

But then again, due to the demonization of salt and dairy, many are of course chronically deficient in iodine.
>>
>>41545968
Yep
>>
How did eating every day even become a thing? I mean if you eat Monday morning and don't eat again until Saturday, you're just spreading your meals out like if you ate 3 meals a day, only eating more when you do eat.
>>
Finished a 2 day fast today, going to go for a two day then three day a week pattern. I'll probably see a specialist or something about it if I want to go longer.

If I'm going for a 14-day fast, should I supplement with lite salt and potassium? Or just go straight tap water?

>how did eating every day even become a thing?
There are multiple industries, some of the hugest ones, that revolve around the sale of food.
>$$$$$$$
>>
>>41548233
You definitely need salt. I'd go with Himalayan Rock Salt. You don't need potassium, but if you're worried you can use Morton lite salt, which has potassium. You need magnesium like Natural Calm Magnesium Powder, which is easy on the stomach.
>>
>>41548233
>If I'm going for a 14-day fast, should I supplement with lite salt and potassium? Or just go straight tap water?

There's literally no downside to supplementing electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and sodium

Sodium makes even short term fasts a lot easier because you don't get dehydrated. Magnesium and potassium are a good idea in long term fasts so you don't get cramps and arythmia.
>>
The OP (or a post directly after it) should include something about recommended supplements, or reasons for supplementing something teebeeeech.

There's a lot of talk in this thread about lite salt, potassium, magnesium and a multivitamin, but I've seen recommendations for iodine, fiber, fish oil, amino acids, etc.

try nofap and fasting at the same time to get the real deal
>>
>>41552632

.. No?

Think logically, if fasting for a few days caused irreparable damage to our bodies .. would our species be alive today?

Homosapien is designed to work at near 100% efficiency when food deprived .. and if it didn't we'd of died off as a species during our nomadic/tribal days .. because we spent the majority of our time fasted & in the pursuit of getting a meal.

Realistically, the human body has multiple contingencies that just scream it's designed to be fasted.

We can switch from glycolysis to ketosis on a dime for both our brain and muscles.

We upregulate GH to prevent muscle loss, which ultimately causes us to lose LESS muscle the longer we're on a fast.

Our body is capable of prioritising protein for catabolism & the body should strong preference to all protein other than skeletal muscle & organ.

We have bodyfat, aka a literal energy bank.

Think about it ..

... Except we spent nearly all our time fasted & exercising while pursuing food .. so using your own logic.

> Fasting -> organ damage.

Then surely we'd accumulate a lot of damage very fast.

It doesn't even need to kill us, just hinder us enough to allow something else to kill us.
>>
>>41552748

It doesn't cause organ damage .. Jesus fucking christ.

This is a step beyond CICO, you need to at least understand human metabolism and its players to get why fasting works.

I'm giving you the nomad example because it requires 0 scientific knowledge, just a bit of critical thought.
>>
>>41552833
It wouldn't be pointless to show her a study since she would accept it as a fact. If it said "after fasting for x weeks there were no signs of organ damage" she would believe it

Also what's the point of hitting gym during water fasting since you can't really build muscle? Aside from cutting more calories.

There is no point, don't do it. Theoretically on intermittent fasting, training then eating immediately afterwards upregulates insulin response and is thus more anabolic, but this is not proven or anything. On a prolonged fast, absolutely do not do anything more strenuous than walking.

yes 3 weeks is correct. at that point you enter starvation assuming you started at low body fat %. you can still survive in starving mode for a while but damage can start to form at that point obviously but you dont just drop dead on 3 weeks +1 day.

Day three of the fast.
Just went to the arboretum with the gf today and the colours when fantastic! At times it felt like the onset of MDMA. Flashes of memories come back too, things that I had forgotten come back vividly, this has been going on longer than my fast but started when I did low carbs altered day fasting but today it`s on another level. GF commented on how I seem to glow with health too.
I feel no hunger or need to eat but I am looking forward to enjoying some foods after this fast. Although I could survive for a fucking long time with my fat reserves.
All in all a very pleasant experience.

No your body not not metabolism organs and brain tissue during a fast.

I'm not a biologist but I am a chemical engineer and have a good understanding of biology. In the case of your body lacking carbohydrates it will reduce lipids to form NADPH from NADP and then oxidize NADPH to energy forming NADP+

It will also break down proteins/peptides and reduce amino acids for energy.

Brain cells are G0 cells and will not be catabolized, most organ cell won't be either.

Get some sodium in you. Mix a quarter-teaspoon with some warm water and guzzle it. If that doesn't help, you are either experiencing a withdrawal from carbs/caffeine/etc or you need to get some potassium/magnesium vitamins in you.

Keep pushing, it should get easier after day 5 is over.

>>
>>41557300
For only a 4 day fast you can eat anything you want and be fine as long as you understand you're going to fill up a lot faster than you used to. Don't order large portions to celebrate and eat slowly.

Also drop blueberries because carbs make low calorie and fasting fucking horrible. Your body tries to run on glucose that isn't there. And you crash after the sugar is gone.
>>
>>41556084
Eating even a small amount makes you hungry the rest of the day.

Fasting is horrible the first few days but really easy after that.

Right now I'm fasting for 7 days then eating for 3 because that's how long I can last before I feel terrible. I could spread my calories and nutrition out with a very low calorie diet, but I was hungry as fuck doing that. With fasting I'm not hungry until day 6 or so then I just ignore it because you build a tolerance.

I don't know why non fasters are so angry about people that do short fasts (i.e. 1-3 days). The logic about why it's bad doesn't make as much sense to me the more I think about it.

>If you fast you'll lose gains
Most people that fast aren't going to do so with the intent of maintaining or increasing their gains, although that leads to my second part:

>If you fast your body is permanently damaged and you got fucked.

I think this is where I think shit is weird, I really think it'd be fucked up if my body basically collapsed under itself if I didn't eat within 24 hours, I can see the lack of energy or a headache or something but if my body gets fucked up from not eating in a little amount of time such as a day or two then I really think I have a bigger problem.
>>
>>41561880
Don't fall for the shit people feed you about being 'deprived and sickly' after 24 hours, or even 72. They can't help that their feeble minds blindly believe what the Kelloggs marketing team tells them about the importance of eating once every 3 hours!
>>
I do intermittent fasting and I fast for a whole day once a month.
It works for me but I don't expect everyone else to have the same results
>>
>>41561907
I mean yes at 24, I did my first fast at around 50 hours and felt a headache. I think regardless of marketing being told 'don't eat literally anything for 3 days' can merit a few eyebrows, outside of marketer shills people do believe that it is a sign of an eating disorder ala anorexia. Being told to eat three square meals made since, you naturally take a break when you wake up, in the middle of work and at the end of the day. Calories in/out has merit don't try to strawman their argument.

I don't expect to lose massive weight but I see more benefits from it the more I see it, I also see why there is concern in that area too.

A lot of anons have posted really good studies. I think the best time to do a fast is after a bulk since youve accumulated a lot of extra fat while building muscle. But fasting can be used whenever. Bulk for 8months
Fast for 1week
Cut for the remaining months.

>because cavemen existed, we should do the same things

the issue is not that it's a fast. the issue is that it's a starvation fast and that people are advocating a starvation fast to the point that it gets into permanent damage territory (fasting should never be longer than five days)

cavemen stubbed their toe and died because of no penicillin, we should do the same. we are designed to eat raw meat because we can in fact chew and digest it, let's do that

stretch marks are caused by your surface area growing faster than your skin can stretch

so it rips and repairs itself with scar tissue

if autophagy minimizes stretch marks then it does so by eating the excess skin you have starting with your stretch marks which are scars.

yes it happens, but marginally. you lose muscle on a cut too buddy. I didn't lie, you will NOT lose all of your gains after 7 days of your body burning through fat reserves assuming you're above 10% BF or so

does it count as fasting if i only eat 1 bowl of soup every day?
>>

is this you? >>41567077

i considered posting in that thread.

eating the soup would probably just make it more difficult.
>>

wots the point of this reply?
>>

>eating the soup would probably just make it more difficult.
How come? Is it because it'll make me hungrier? I don't have a problem when it comes to cravings, I survived 4 months on one small piece of chicken breast every day back in 2013 and I never had cravings (and went from 120kg to 75 and stayed that way until May of 2016)
>>
>>41564149

Are you the same guy that keeps trying to argue it's easier to eat slightly less than it is to eat nothing?
>>
>>41567152
you need to reduce your insulin as much as possible in order to see the benefits of fasting. eating the soup will increase it.
>>
>>41567152

Bro, the 'fasting' means something. Specifically, you're not fasted if you're eating soup everyday.

Can someone explain to me fasting like im 5? I know its where you don't eat but it cant be that simple.

Would it help to do a 24hour fast once a week? (to lose weight)

Do you get headaches after not eating? I get headaches for not eating for 6 hours.

>>

I think you're talking about me. I'm the guy who you insisted couldn't possibly lose weight by eating less.

whenever you feel a bit off, put about 1/4 of a teaspoon directly on your tongue and suck on it. this gets it into your system faster than dissolving it into water.

the total quantity doesn't matter, just take as much as you need. too much > too little.
>>
>>41561907
Yeah it's total bullshit, people used to eat an apple for breakfast and that was normal until capitalism came and suddenly we HAD to have a full meal
>>
>>41567683
read through the last 3 threads. you'll see just how bad the indoctrination really is here.
>>
Just got done with a 3 day water fast. Was originally aiming for 7, but I started getting leg cramps. Didn't feel like fucking around with a possible potassium deficiency. Had a lot of weird side effects.
>perpetual morning breath
>bad headache, at least to start
>a little acid reflex halfway through
>some mean as fuck morning wood
>slightly improved eyesight (still not 100% on this, but I think it helped my astigmatism a little)
>acne on my forehead cleared slightly
Gonna use this to transition to a keto diet and revisit it later. In the meantime I wanna do some more research on this shit. The eyesight in particular is really mind-boggling to me.

>>41567763
were you spiking your water with lite salt and consuming close to a days worth each day? i didn't get any of these sides except 4 days (also i took magnesium to avoid cramps)
>>41567812
see above. break the fast with a small cup of steamed veggies. eat easy that day.
>>
>>41567764
i think anon might be trying to kill you dog don't do it its mustard gas
>>
>>41567812
Starting on the second day I dropped about a teaspoon of salt into some water and drank it. Nasty, but it took care of my headache. Multivitamins help since you aren't taking any in, but if it's only for three days you'll probably be fine.
Broke my fast this morning with some chicken noodle soup, only focusing on the broth and vegetables. For lunch I did spinach with caesar dressing. It was really short-notice, I'm sure there's better choices out there.
>>
So supplements that should be taken on a fast I'm gathering should be magnesium and putting salt in my water? Can I still take zinc and vitamin b and my normal vitamin stack or will it fuck up the fast? Is coffee off limits? I've done a 4 day water fast before, I'd like to step it up to 7.
>>
>>41546852
It won't, it's a myth. The skin has a limit of elasticity and you won't get loose skin if you don't blob over that limit

Might have to do your own research on that one. BCAAs is an interesting idea though. Your body eats some of your muscle mass while fasting since it can't make amino acids from fat. But you're not gonna lose much anyway. I think it's something like 20g/day which slowly decreases the further along you go. Again, do your own research, I don't know much about this either.
>>
>>41554151
Im not advocating for fasting but thats not true, babies dying in infancy distorts the figures. Average height in 400bc britain was 6 foot. Basically suck my dick you lil faggot

Guys so I've been fasting 1 meal a day for the past few months and I've GAINED weight. I'm up 2kg and I'm looking leaner than I ever have. Fasting is the tits.

You need magnesium, potassium, and sodium. If you're going to add salt to your water, you need to make sure that it has potassium in it. Check the label. I use morton lite salt and that's what is being recommended by others. As long as you're getting those three, it doesn't really matter how you get it.

Go ahead and use your normal vitamin stack, there isn't really a reason not to do so. Plenty of others still use vitamins while fasting. The fat soluble vitamins will have a low absorption rate since you're fasting, but I think you'll still absorb some.

Apple fast v water fast?

Looking to attempt fasting 1-2 days a week currently, but not sure what method I should use for my first fast.

also I think this is a good source for some info on fasting, its the article I read

https://cspinet.org/tip/cr-diet-truth-will-calorie-restriction-prolong-your-life
>>
>>41570455
an apple fast is utterly retarded doctor oz shit. do it the manly way. eat nothing and just drink water.

for future reference, you should do your research on primarily pubmed. they have legit studies there, not clickbait articles.
