Heavy squat and deadlift webms are impressive. Bench... not so much. Not at all, in fact.

Winding up your body in the most stupid, convoluted fashion, pressing your face against the bench (what the fuck), all so that you can have a back arch bigger than the fucking Missouri Gateway, resulting in the bar only having to be lowered four inches before it's touching your chest...

This shit is really stupid.

It should be regulated so that you must be lying flat. I don't care if the weight decreased, you'd be doing a much deeper rom. It'd be much more impressive and it wouldn't look quite so stupid.

Put the weight they're lifting on the bar and try it yourself.

You'll come to appreciate the intense test of skill, technique, and strength that is the powerlifting bench press with time.

and this is hoenstly an issue with all sports I feel, where the viewer misconcieves the competitive aspect of the sport with the recreational, where it's percieved as incorrect because they don't look the same. For example, backyard football looks nothing like professional play. Even something as simple as basketball doesn't look the same, and the viewer is unaccustomed to it. It doesn't look the same, but these guys can perform the same weight with a longer ROM.

I'm not denying it's heavy shit and I'm not disagreeing that only the strongest can do it, but when it comes down to who can arch their back better as opposed to who's got the greater muscular strength, there's a problem. Just as all other lifts, be they oly or powerlifting, have regulations with form, bench should have regulations against arching.

I'd also argue that if it's going to fuck your shoulders up that bad then you can't handle the weight in the first place and again, it'd be coming down to total muscular strength over who can arch their back better.

Both people can arch. So it's fair, since both arch it's about the strength.

The differences in arch aren't that high, most difference comes from genetics aka how long your arms are.
Do you want the rules to limit the length of your arms as well?

He was making a point in a satirical manner that body proportions and limbs length play a bigger factor and you can't regulate that.
>>
>>40009145
The differences in arch are fucking huge.

Regardless, you've already admitted there's a difference, so it's going to affect the lift. Thus it's not entirely reliant on muscular strength and thus it's a sham.
>>
>>40009146

I've been on a self made kinda half power lifting half bodybuilding routine for 8 years or so (have only been back lifting for 1 year after taking 15 months off for prison) I am 200lbs at 5'11 and around 18% body fat or so with a 285 bench, 365 squat and 495 dead. I am interested in doing my first real pure power lifting program and am wondering what i should do.

My current routine is a 4 day split with 5x5 on all the compounds. Bench, Squat, Dead and OHP being my 4th day, with higher rep isolation exercises that use the same muscle groups as whatever compound i'm doing that day.

Any suggestions on a routine?

Answer: because there has to be regulation on form to isolate specific muscle groups and thus arching the back should be restricted in order to conform with this.

Ding, penny dropped!

There are rules. Rules which restrict people to doing specific movements in specific positions in order to isolate muscle groups. Rules which stop you from standing up and hoisting the bar to ensure this. Rules which should be expanded to disclude arching in order to further this.

We've got a guy at my club who've squatted almost 200 as a 74. His deadlift is now slightly above 200, at 83 kg bw. Are you really going to tell him he can't jew his way to 10 kg extra in bench?
>>
>>40009263

I don't see your point. A difference in arm length can make a lift harder for someone? That's fine. That's life. The distance of your natural rom is going to vary from person to person. But arching your back and cutting it out is an outside factor and that's the problem.
>>

>>40009339

The rules in sports do indeed change for the better. There are often major changes to those rules. Perhaps the demand for a change like this isn't coming any time soon due to the lack of popularity with regards to powerlifting.
>>
>>40009376
I think this is wherein the difference of opinion lies.

What you consider to be a skill, most people will consider to be a cheap way of cutting out half the lift. And while you'll argue that it's not cutting out the lift, but enabling you to lift more, at the end of the day, it's restricting your rom significantly and that's what people see.
>>
>>40009391
its not coming
but just you wait on the rule change before you think about competing lad
>>
>>40009391
Ok, so how would you limit arching? What would be your rules? Remember, the rules must allow for consistent judging
>>
>>40009414
To add: and that's why I commented earlier about "why don't we just stand on the bench and pick the bar up". That would allow us to lift even more weight (this is powerlifting after all, all about the weight). But of course, it's not all about the weight. There are rules in place to stop you from cheating a lift and those rules should include arching with regards to bench.
>>
>>40009425
It's pretty clear when someone's running out of ground. You've gone from arguing your point to "well it doesn't matter because you're not the one doing it". Not an argument laddie.
>>
>>40009145
God, you are actually retarded if you think those arches are even close, even with longer arm length this guy has a MUCH longer ranger of motion.
>>
>>40009195

>>
>>40009430

>>
>>40009242
Overhead is a much more technically demanding and limiting exercise compared to the low-bar or any other squat for that manner.
>>
>>40009464
So you argue all day in favour of something you cant even describe properly?
>>
>>40009475
which was my argument. Lowbar takes half the rom away compared to an overhead squat or an atg front squat so there should be rules against this rom reduction.
>>
>>40009480
Well boy, I could have listed you criteria to be met with regards to limiting arching but I'd expected your reply, if any, to go along the lines of "nah that's stupid" regardless of what I posted. So I thought it best to mention that it would need be to decided upon by judges, especially as at the end of the day it would be decided upon by judges.

>>
>>40009492
I think he was saying that the low-bar is the lift in powerlifting though? I am a weightlifter and powerlifting is king of laughable tier to me, but I do understand the difference between raw strength and technical prowess.

I think a lot of people just get turned off when they see the McDonalds arch in what they thought was going to be a "flat" bench press
>>
>>40009508
Do you really think judges would debate about such rules if you think these arch reducing rules are too fragile to be discussed with anons on an imageboard?
You know any rule of this kind would be impossible to judge.
>>
>>40009508
>judges.
>>
>>40009515
Rules change in sport. All the time.

I've given you reason enough for the change and it didn't follow along the lines of you misrepresenting what I'm saying.

There are rules to restrict people to use specific muscle groups, to ensure that powerlifting is a test of how much weight a person can use when performing a full lift. For the same reason as you can't stand up and pick up the bar, you should not be able to arch your back.

Anyway, good luck in all your lifts lads.
>>
>>40009601
>For the same reason as you can't stand up and pick up the bar, you should not be able to arch your back.
This is the most retarded shit I've read today. Standing on the bench and deadlifting the bar is a different lift. Arching your back, while altering the lift somewhat, is still bencing.

legit negligible. let me guess, you drive to the gym where you're prontly carried in the air by a gym attendant who puts on your gym clothes while you lie limp on the floor, then carries you to the barbell. better not waste so much energy, right?

How come Clarence can pause BP 200kg without wraps, but /plg/ can't BP minus w. wraps without snapping their wrists?
>>

Clarence can also deadlift double overhand 750lbs only using straps. TBQH I think it is just superior flexibility obtained from weightlifting paired with never using them

Any merit to doing most of my volume work high bar and switch to low bar a few weeks before any meet?

Other than helping my shoulders a bit what do you think the benefit is? I've seen CWS squat a lot high bar is it just increased quad work?
>>

And yet fattylifters will use a mixed grip when at those weights
>>
>>40010311
Double overhand with straps is far easier than mixed grip, dino.
>>
>>40010293
For most people it's more about preference and comfort desu.
For a lot of people low bar bothers one thing or another, and high bar just allows more issue-free volume.
I've not really seen any arguments for benefits other than that (though they may exist).

If you did know that you have a quad weakness it may help a bit in that regard tho.

They're flexing during the descent, or maybe not even flexing at all, since the movement naturally shortens the muscle (just like your biceps will look flexed during the descent of a skullcrusher). As the bar goes up you can see the lats relax back, almost just flopping around.

They aren't useless, they help with stabilization of the shoulder rotation during the descent, to some extent, along with the subscapularis, the teres major, and more importantly the chest (and the rotator cuff stabilizes with counter external rotation forces).

From a purely biomechanical standpoint, the lats are actually able to push the bar 2cm or so off the chest (it then becomes antagonist for the rest of the movement).
However, the jury is still out on whether that actually happens or not during bench pressing in any significant manner.
Theoretically, it should.
But in practise we have seen EMGs (which aren't very good, but we're limited in technology for now) and the lats don't seem to really be doing anything there.
The explanation would that the motor control of the nervous system knows the contraction of the lats will quickly change to go against the pressing of the chest, pulling the bar down. So it might choose to not activate the lats during the initial 2cm at all in order to not interfere and create a sticking point right after when the lats would pull against the chest before relaxing back.

But, we still don't know.
We don't have good enough technology for that.
But we know one thing for sure: strengthening the lats won't make you bench press more weight. It can help with a few things, specially cause exercises that train your lats will also train your chest, subscapularis, and teres major, thus training all the muscles that do the internal rotation of the shoulder - making the technique more stable. But strengthening the lats alone won't make you able to move more weight on the bench.

And remember to listen to uncle Boris himself when it comes to adjusting the weights up or down. People will say if you touch anything in the program you're gonna die but Boris himself says you should adapt the program in order to work well for yourself.

Also, if you're not competing, you don't need to do the whole comp cycle. Just do the first week where you test new maxes.

And you don't need to do the whole 3 prep cycles to test new maxes. You can run one and test, or two and test, if you want. Whatever you feel will work best for you.
Some people can still make good progress after one month, some people will need three to see an actual improvement.

If you need any help you know where to find me!

Also, the height of the boxes is pic related.

Did you have to detox off of the alcohol in jail?
And how did you get so many OVIs that they sent you to prison? That's usually just like 5 days in jail.
>>
>>40010928
I was mainly detoxing off of heroin when I went in and it sucked, I never drank enough to go through alcohol withdrawal. I got 2 DUIs and then decided I was done forever, then within 2 months I managed to get 2 both times while sleep walking on Ambien.. I made it about 25 feet out of my drive way both times before just falling asleep behind the wheel. None of my DUIs involved an accident though.

You're pulling the bar with your lats, so it didn't get out of position when it rolled forwards, which is good.

All I'd say is as the bar reaches your knees, think about thrusting your hips forward instead of lifting the bar. This way you'll be more explosive and engage your glutes more, leading to better and faster lockouts.

Nah, back is fine. The weight was kind of light, though, so it doesn't necessarily indicate how it looks when attempting 100%. But as it is in the vid it's fine.

Maybe try to pull your shoulders back (that's why strongmen like to roll the bar, to get their shoulders pulling back from the start) and extend your thoracic spine a bit more. But as is it's fine.

I really like the Ristos, they look more like the classic shoes and not overly detailed. Just wish their strap wasn't so wide, would look much better.

But I don't think any shoes beat the adistar 2008, ASICS 727, and Ironwork 3. Those are gorgeous in every way.

Too bad they cost a fortune.

Not bad... feet flat on the floor, and planted.
Looks like you were pushing through your heels, too.
Not sure about footwear choice, but if you can't reach the floor due to height........

--- however --- you seem a little "forward" on the bench.... "pulling" the weight off the rack rather than merely "raising" it off the hooks will wreck your shoulders after time.

Overall score: Pass

>I can only bench on pic related.
>>
>>40009848
If youre still around anon, I also have wide feet (2E) but they fit well enough. It's a bit tight on my right foot since that's my bigger one but it should be manageable. You only need them really for squatting or Oly lifts.
>>
>>40013042
I like pressing in olympic shoes as I feel like it increases/helps my arch. Also agree with the un-rack situation; it's not my usual gym and the bench height is really shitty for me at this one. My un-rack usually isn't that bad or shoulder-wrecking. Cheers for the feedback on leg drive... Was hoping I had got it right.

No, but it helps with not needing wrist wraps for benching and things like that, as an Olympic Weightlifter I have never had an issue with my wrists hurting during any pressing movement, yet I see people at my gym all the time using wraps for anything over 200lbs on bench

>>40013770
Strengthshop do the cheapest, SBD do the nicest. Titan do the most supportive (could conceivably add like, 500g to your squat) and Inzer do the one that shows off the most legs and chest (for the deadlift)
>>
>>40013760
it's safe to assume that almost every single Olympian who would benefit from roids uses them, correct? so they are simply getting punished for being dumb enough to get caught. wish it was simply more regulated.
>>
>>40013798
>it's safe to assume that almost every single Olympian who would benefit from roids uses them
No

>so they are simply getting punished for being dumb enough to get caught
No, because one, it's the coaches fault, not the athlete. They don't have any control over their training or doping. Other than quitting the sport altogether. Also 'dumb enough to get caught'. No. Drug tests are not >le intelligence test.

Besides, banning the federation is the only sensible punishment. Athlete only sanctions are very unfair.
>>
>>40013798
>wish it was simply more regulated.
This is also stupid.

Even in places with state sponsored doping, they still test and sanction those who are doping 'too much' (and will thus be caught in wada testing)

>>
>>40008833
...wait. You're actually back? Or is this just some imposter?
>>
>>40013760

This is utterly fucking insane and part of a campaign by the IOC and other sissy faggots to remove anything remotely masculine from the Olympics and ultimately the culture.

Going back EIGHT FUCKING YEARS and taking away medals kind of defeats the point of even holding the competition. Which is their point, get this sort of thing out of the Olympics.

Sanctioning the entire "team" is fucking objectively stupid as well, at least from any perspective that ISN'T them trying to run strength sports out of the Olympics so we can get more synchronized swimming style bullshit. What else pulls that bullshit? Do you think they suspend the entire Ranger's team for three games because Brandon Pirri laid a recklessly illegal hit? Of course not, because the NHL isn't run by syphilitic gibbons.

You could probably use some of ripptoe's cues. Point your toes just slightly out, do not role the the bar at the start the rep. I don't know if your back is straight enough or but i wouldn't say that its 100% good form. When you put the bar down you don't bend your knees enough so you end up with worse form on the next rep. And your weight might be on the front of your feet which you dont want.

Idk if this is helpful but i tried.

Cheers
