Actually, from what I've seen, the 6 days group did twice the amount of warmup sets than the 3 days group.
What the guy explained is that the programs were exactly the same. So I wouldn't expect the 3d group to warmup twice or the 6d group to not warmup on the second day.

I saw in the youtube comments that the study was planned to release this year. I wonder if I can find it anywhere...

Although, now that I think of it, the 3d group could have done squat bench deadlift squat bench deadlift - so on the second round they would warmup again.

Hm...

Thanks for link, but that isn't very useful at this point in the discussion. We're not debating the basics.

>>39819454

You can sub the chain/board work for regular sets. I remember the board stuff you just reduced by 5% and it was fine. Not sure about the chains.

The small load is only marginally less volume, as it's intended for heavier lifters who lift heavier weights. But you're still doing plenty of work, it's still Sheiko.

Or you can just customise the advanced large load, as in, removing accessories, or taking one set out of the workset, stuff like that. Until you get used to it, then you can just do it all.

Any of the three choices should work well, really.

I actually don't know the sauce.

VBT is just another coaching tool. It's really not very useful for an athlete, and it's too cumbersome and slow to use if you train alone.

I've used VBT for a while but I didn't like it very much. Sometimes a lifter has a very slow squat attempt, but then his next attempt goes fast - the difference being that on the first attempt his torso went too far forward and the bar left his centre of gravity.

So velocity is just a variable that... varies too much, in my opinion. I felt like I was better off looking at the lifts myself and seeing what happened, instead of using an automatic system that's not very precise.

There's stuff here if you wanna read:

thoughts on running sheiko while slightly injured

>>39819867

I only started training after transitioning.
I can't say how it was before, but it's been very very slow.
Girls who were around my bodyweight could outlift me in no time. Though I was surprisingly good at snatching, so somehow I managed to stay competitive on that one. But as time goes on they just leave me eating dust.

But I don't mind, I lift for fun. My actual passion is coaching. I guess it's what Rip said, the worst athletes often make the best coaches. kek

That makes sense, because trans women on hrt supposedly have lower T levels than cis women.

I was curious because I'm trans too. I got into lifting back when I was trying to repress and make myself be manly, but I haven't been to a gym in years now. Lately I've been thinking that maybe I should get back into lifting, although I'm not sure what to expect now that I have basically no T.

>>39820243

Yes, I've seen it happen. Just make sure you're running Sheiko ironically correctly, and not ironically wrongly.

>>39820199

Well, progression in both strength and muscle development is pretty slow. But it exists, and it's still fun.

In my training I would skip everything upperbody except snatches and jerks. Of course that led to me being very weak in specific things, but oh well gotta play with the cards I've been dealt.
But I'm sure that even if I did train upper, I'd barely see muscle growth. Test makes a huge difference.

I got into weightlifting basically because it's more lowerbody dominant and squat dependant, while PL is pretty much fullbody dependant and needs upperbody training.

But even if you just wanna go to the gym to do squats and butt exercises, it's worth it. Way better than not doing anything, at least.

I no longer care about how much weight I can lift. I mostly just want to look better.
Although part of it is that I've been under-eating lately, not because I'm anorexic, but because I'm depressed and rarely feel motivated to get food, so maybe lifting could give me a reason to start eating more.

As a beginner, it's not stuff you need. You'll look past your main movements and won't go as heavy on them as you normally would because you have all this other shit to do. It's best to just keep it to 1-2 accessory movements that you do if and only if you have the energy after doing all of your other main lifts for as heavy as you can do them.
>>
>>39819397
Are sheiko's stats in kg or lbs?
>>
>>39820781
It doesn't really matter. I'm sure kay gees are the default, but inputting lbs wouldn't change much. You might have to do your own rounding. If that sounds scary, you'll have to tweak the formulas.
>>
>>39820856
Tried both and it's the same. Good for me, I live in Europe.
>>
>>39820001

That depends. Do you mean you intend to start up Texas Method and then make progress while cutting? That's probably not going to happen to a great extent.

If you mean "I've been on TM a while and am about to need a taper/deload, can I drop ten lbs in two or three weeks and keep strength" the answer is probably, if done right.

No powerlifter has problems with cardiovascular health that jogging is going to solve. Fat burns from doing literally nothing. There are much better ways to increase blood flow that don't either exhaust or beat up yourself.

You are a faggot. LISS is exclusively for faggots.

Also it makes you look better and is good for your health in general.

So get motivated and get started!

You can do:
prep 1 -> first week of comp
prep 2 -> first week of comp
prep 1 -> prep 2 -> first week of comp
prep 1 -> prep 2 -> comp (if you're competing)

The tests he suggests 105% but you can go higher. Do like 3 attempts on each lift and see where you stand, then restart or move on.

I injured my lower back (self-diagnozed disc bulge) squatting about 13 months ago, and I haven't fully recovered yet. The physician I went to just set me back about 6 months with the ill advice that she gave me. I read up on Stuart McGill and bought a book of his and started treating myself. I got better, almost instantly, but I still have minor pain here and there. I started working out again, but I had to essentially reset my squat and deadlift, and drop my bench by about 30-40%.

Should I wait until I'm completely pain-free or is it "safe" to train with minor pain (almost never while I'm lifting, mainly random times throughout the day)? It seems like this could take months. I don't want to sit on my ass all day. I've fixed my form issues that caused the injury in the first place but I'm still a bit scared that I will fuck up myself, badly.

I know this place is probably not the place to ask but whatever. Bad experiences with professionals in all health related fields, not just this instance.

The Big 3 + Cat/Camel stretch every day with improved quality of movement in all areas of your life. From sitting, to tying your shoes, to brushing your teeth. It all comes down to finding as many pain free zones as possible and trying to stay in them as long as possible, while also strengthening your core, which in turn leads to recovery on all levels, even when the pain is chronic.

75% is like your 12 rep max tho

It differs from day to day. Sometimes I go through a full workout while barely feeling anything, even when doing deads or squats.

Some days I feel it most when benching.

Some days I might feel it in one rep in one set.

It seems pretty constant. It doesn't get better. It doesn't get worse.

It just looks... inappropriate for peaking.
I'd start by removing cg bench sldl rows. Pause squat is fine.
I'd move the last day to the first of the last week or the third of the first week. Then remove the new fourth day of the last week.
Do less reps. Everything is above 5. You're not gonna compete with reps. Focus on 3-2-1 for most of the main work. Specially on the second and third weeks. That will require you to adjust the % of those days as well, so I'm attaching a guide for % and RPE.
Remove all accessories from the last week.
Increase all the sets of the main lifts in the first week by 2 (1 for day 3, if not swapped with the test day).

This is a start but there's a lot of work to do.

>>39821599

Yo trappy pls, or someone!

How do i program for my father who is 55 years old and have been sitting in his couch for 15 years?

I am not quite sure which exercices to have him do. His body is pretty much in okay shape for having lived like he do, there is no injuries or anything like that, he is just really really fucking weak and i dont think he can squat or overhead press for example, that would be to hard on his back.

I been thinking of having him do machines and stuff and strengthen him up so that he can eventually do the compounds.

What exercies can i have him do for his core, lower back and legs? Or just back/leg/core strength in general? I think he can do some variation of deadlifts with very easy weights, but i am not sure exactly how to work on his specific weaknesses.
Pls drop me some tips, information or links or something.
>>
>>39821586
Are you incredibly slow-twitch biased?

Incorporate some short hill sprints, prowler work, etc. Once or twice per week. Short alactic efforts with decent recovery. Also have at least one day where you keep your heart rate over 120 for a significant chunk of time.

Also, try harder.

Start with box squats. If he can't with the barbell, use dumbells. If he can't go to parallel, put small plates under his heels.
Do overhead presses with dumbells.
Do deadlifts, with the bar if necessary. Use boxes or the safety in the rack to set the bar at an appropriate height for him.
Do chinups in the lat pulldown machine.

Do SS with those lifts, increase 1-2kg per workout.

Do back extensions, bodyweight. 3xF

Once he can OHP the barbell, add bench press.
>>
>>39821684
TL:DR
You can improve speed/explosiveness with training. If you lack it, then you need to train it, especially for strength sports.

Legs: lunges, try teaching him goblet squats and slowly transition to front squats, do some prowler stuff, very easy to do and not that technical. Try to transition to hack squat machine after prowlers since the pushing pattern is roughly the same even though the other s unilateral.

Lower back: classic hypers, good mornings with bands, maybe some reverse hypers

I don't think there should be a specific focus on lower back to start with. Strenghten the glutes and overall core and the rest will follow.

He doesn't have a specific weakness: he is weak everwhere and would benefit from literally any movement that is weighted accordingly.

Keep it simple with maybe 3x fullbody

chestpress
lat pulldown
lateral raises
prowler/goblet squat stuff
maybe let him choose an ab exercise so he does something he likes. People often know tons of ab routines. Just make it burn and progress from there.

Start with something like this for 4 weeks and see what he thinks of it.

I found a really cool gym near me with several national weightlifters, the owner actually worked with a coach from the USA olympic team for a while and he himself has been weightlifting for over 10 years. It sounds pretty awesome to be honest because I've been looking into trying out oly lifting and it's probably a hell of a lot easier learning from a coach rather than trying to learn it all myself and potentially unlearn it later on if I have issues with my form.

The only issue is that the pricing is about $200 a month for me as a student (normally it's $250) and my current commercial gym is like $50 a month I think. From what I've seen the equipment looks great (bunch of eleiko stuff, lots of platforms) and the price of coaching is included in that figure, but it is quite a lot of money and I'd probably have to work extra hours on top of my schooling to pay for it.

This is just a blog post but I felt like talking about it.

Late response, was gym.

I do OHP on "Light day" 3x5. Starting off pretty light and progressing weekly until it gets heavy enough that I'm either REALLY struggling to get reps or I begin to feel it's leaving me fatigued for Friday Bench.

I'm just doing the Texas Method For Powerlifting program outlined in that book. It's simple and reasonably effective. Though my bench is quite lol, it went from a previous max of 285 to 315 lbs with about three months of training. I'm on about an 8 week cycle of it right now, and we'll see what happens.

>You can improve speed/explosiveness with training.

[Citation Needed]

Vertical leap, the objectively best way to measure "explosiveness" to weight ratio (ie "speed), is demonstrably not very trainable. Maybe you can get a 10% increase out of an untrained guy via weight training and explosive lifts like power cleans.

Training power is a waste of time for powerlifters (ignoring the horrible naming convention). Powerlifting is pure strength, applied with technique. Therefore, strength training is the most effective training.

In fact, strength training will increase one's maximal power output by MUCH more that training power output will increase strength. As an example, my fat, strong ass can throw a hay bale farther than a 130 lbs poofter with a 40'' vertical leap

I'm certain that sports you are referring to as "strength sports" are really power sports (Olympic weightlifting, American and rugby football, golf, ice hockey). Being able to slowly move 600 lbs isn't as useful in American football as it is to be able to move 350 lbs really goddamn fast. BUT, being able to move 600 lbs slowly will help in moving 350 lbs fast.

Orthopedists are actual doctors specializing in dealing the musculoskeletal issues like joint, muscle, or bone injuries.

I'm sure there are plenty such dipshits that will tell you that squatting is bad for you're knees, because people are retards, but these people are, on average, less retarded than chiropractors and the like
>>
>>39821975

What the fuck is so goddamn appealing about SL? Is it that "5x5" is nice and even and satisfies your various autisms?

It's shit. Absolute dogshit compared to SS. If the problem with SS is that you either lack the equipment to do power cleans, or are just scared like a little girl at the prospect of power cleans, just do "speed" deadlifts (basically a pull with the speed of a power clean without the hassle of racking it on your shoulders) for 5x3 with 75% of your deadlift weight when the program calls for power cleans.

Box squats tend to be easier to teach new lifters. Also less stress overall. Wouldn't use it for everyone but it's a viable progression for beginners.

No point going to failure on back extensions though. Higher rep basic movements have their uses to get people used to moving properly and feeling it but going to or near failure is counterproductive to that.

You're thinking of the wrong type of box squat.
I'm talking about partial squats where the you use a box to determine where it ends.
It's what Boris does to teach kids to squat. Works very well to teach older trainees.

I'm not talking about westside box squats.
>>
>>39823279

>What did you lift today?

Squat 2x5 315 lbs
OHP 3x5 175 lbs
Chin Ups 3x8

I fucking hate light day. An hour spent lifting like an idiot, nothing but easy reps and protein farts, signifying nothing. I feel like a 115 lbs MtF tranny that spends all of >her time on a Mongolian pictogram website when I write this shit in my log
>>
>>39823387

>$200 a month

Just spend your $50 on the gym membership, save the other $150 for a goddamn year, and buy your own barbell set up.
>>
>>39824378
Why did that take an hour? Should've taken no more than 30 mins.
>>
>>39824357

>I'm talking about partial squats where the you use a box to determine where it ends.

Well then, I could see how that might help if he's incapable of doing a proper squat with just the bar. Though in such a case I'd be more likely to have him leg press some leg strength up real quick so that he can freely squat the bar. Possibly also stretching if that's a serious problem, which, in my limited experience dealing with mostly younger or at least halfway active people, it never is.
>>
>>39824432

When you're dealing with older, sedentary people you tend to run into two major problems.

1. They're immobile as fuck.
2. Because they're immobile as fuck and don't do shit day-to-day, they've got next to no idea of how to actually move even in the ROM they do have.

Box squats tend to help here because they give you a consistent target and an easy method of progression. It also tends to help with confidence, lots of these people have confidence issues with squatting straight down (and for good reason, they don't usually have the mobility or control to do it properly. They'll freeze up, collapse or divebomb. Very rarely will they actually get it right to start with).

It's bad enough that a lot of people who deal with that group heavily will actually program a few weeks of very light DB/machine isolation work and mobility tests before they let them anywhere near a barbell, just so they'll have even a basic idea of what it feels like to have certain muscles firing and can develop some basic coordination under load. You sometimes get the same issue with complete couch potatoes who start out training. People with a history of activity may have some mobility or form issues, but almost never to that kind of extent.

>>39824432

I work by progressively lowering the box (and increasing the weight slowly) and also having them do no-weights squats with heels to work on getting used to the movement and gaining mobility. Eventually I also include paused box squats with less weight.

I managed to get a 51-52 years old woman with a knee injury and no mobility to squat her bodyweight almost ATG (her knee physically couldn't flex more) for 5 reps with this strategy in a few months. No leg pressing, no anything besides squatting. Mainly because we didn't have leg press at the gym kek.

There's also some utter fucking retard with legit brain damage that will not shut the fuck up about whatever stupid shit he's talking about and leave me the fuck alone. It takes him forever to actually say that shit too, because he's always babbling 90% disjointed gibberish, using "yeah you know man fuck man" like it's a fucking comma. This is why I love having a home gym. Why not wear headphones? Isn't that what people do in gyms to avoid talking to fags?
>>
>>39824525

I'm cheap as fuck, and refuse to spend a bunch of money on shit until I move out of my parent's attic.

Corded headphones will get in the way of lifting. Wireless ones are generally pricey. AND I have a middling Samsung phone that isn't as good for storing oodles of music and shit on it as an iPhone or some such.

I might annoy people by just using my phone's speaker to play music off YouTube using the gym's WiFi. Not that I can hear it if one of the fucking dance classes isn't blasting "PUSSY WIDE OPEN" loud enough for the Steak'n'Shake across the parking lot to hear
>>
>>39824544

Corded headphones aren't usually a problem, depending on what you're doing. Just run the cable down inside your shirt rather than letting it hang free.

Letting your player sit under your shirt above your belt when squatting/pulling/etc is helpful too.

There isn't much you can do for legs, unfortunately. Pistol squats and glute ham raises and that's pretty much it. So your squat and DL will suffer for sure.

There are lots of things you can do for pressing muscles though, so your bench might be fine. Pushup and variations, dips and variations, handstand pushups

Big E Langston held records in the USAPL before his weight class was retired because the entire IPF is going full weight-class-babby vagina lifting like Olympic Weightlifting.

I'm pretty sure Mark Henry STILL holds a USAPL squat record.

Which makes pro wrestling more of a sport than the half squatting, super-equipped lolfeds. More of a sport than ALL equipped "lifting," really
>>
>>39826461

Hmm how many times did you go to the olympics isley? Oh none? How many all time raw drug tested records do you have in usapl? None?

Hmm its almost as if isley is a complete faggot who has no right to have an opinion of anything...
>>
>>39826469

According to Henry's wikipedia page:

>Squat – 432.5 kg (953.5 lbs)[7] raw with knee wraps (done on October 29, 1995 WDFPF)
>currently heaviest walked-out raw squat of all time (without a monolift) regardless of weight class or federation since 1995

Among other overly specific squat records. Though I was mistaken, his USAPL record is in the deadlift

>Deadlift – 410 kg (903.9 lbs)[8][33][35] raw (done on July 16, 1995 ADFPA (USAPL))
>former all-time raw world record deadlift in SHW class until 2010[50]
>current all-time highest raw deadlift ever pulled by an American in SHW class (+regardless of weight class) since 1995
>current Open Men American record deadlift in SHW class (+regardless of weight class and equipment) since 1995
>current drug tested raw world record deadlift (in SHW class only) since 1995

Whatever the fuck "drug tested" means.

Also:

>official weightlifting total + official powerlifting total = Combined Supertotal: 400.0 kg + 1060.0 kg = 1460.0 kg / 881.8 lbs + 2336.9 lbs = 3218.7 lbs raw with wraps
>current all-time highest combined weightlifting/powerlifting total in history (since 1996*)

>>39826471
>>39826478

Big E (Ettore Ewen) was a RAW lifter, first in the 275 lbs category and then in the super heavyweight category where wikipedia SOMEHOW credits him with a record RAW deadlift of 799 lbs, in direct contradiction of their own article on Henry's record. Though, given the tradition of EVERYONE GETS A RECORD bullshit in powerlifting, they might have considered it a different weight class if they lowered the minimum weight for Super Heavyweight.

Regardless, I'm 99% sure it was Michael Tuscherer that broke Big E's records before the weight classes were rearranged

Because the equipment rules now mean it's not an arms race

Everyone uses the same squat suit (with a couple of exceptions). The same bench shirt (no exceptions) and the same DL suit which is basically identical to the squat suit only maybe a bit bigger. And everyone uses the same four or five knee wraps down to preference and they hardly make a difference between them

So it's just lifter skill and strength as factors. Because of the ipf approved list.

Lots of untested feds are shit not because of roids but because they tend to pass high squats and allow all manner of degenerate benching i.e head off bench, heaving, initiating lift right from hand off etc, as well as just a generally lax and unprofessional atmosphere like the judges being personal friends of the lifters and shit like that. I'm mostly talking American lolfeds here, you guys know what I'm talking about.

If the IPF had a separate untested division with the same strict rules and judging it'd be AMAZING. Then all the talentchad questionable natties like Norris could go on huge blasts and do absolutely ridiculous things. Don't tell me that wouldn't be sweet.
>>
>>39827296
Oh shit a poster with a brain what the fuck
>>
>>39827296

There's nothing wrong with the judges being friends with the lifters (it's pretty much inevitable even with the IPF, given the size and budget of the sport). The problem is favouritism, or more rarely grudge holding, from the judges.
>>

Honestly not even Isley can disagree with me here apart from the (shit) argument that it would hurt the IPFs clean image and jeapordise chances of getting into the Olympics. Which is just a question of autism and public perception really.
>>
The ipf judges are either too strict or lolfed tier judging

I've seen so many asses of benches in the IPF it's untrue
>>
>>39827321
I know, but do you really think Ed Coan is going to red light Mark Bell's 600lb bench when he goes for it? You think he isn't gonna yell press the second it hits his chest? I like MB but these things damage the perception of those backyard untested feds, and for good reason.
>>
>>39827354

Part of that's probably down to film angle vs the judges viewing angle. The rest of it is down to the IPF having a rather fuzzy definition of how much contact is required rather than the binary "is at least some of their backside on the damn bench?"
