If the macro ratio doesn't matter as long as you get enough protein and total cals wouldn't it be better to just count protein/calories and save time?

Growing muscle, recovering and making gains isn't just about eating protein. You need carbs for muscle growth, fats for hormone synthesis and vitamin absorption amongst many other things. A simple 50:35:15 is a good beginner IIFYM. Put as much work Intk your diet and recovery as your workout. Don't half ass this shit if you're serious
