My straps finally got here. I'm kind of disappointed with cheapestnatostraps honestly, the shipping took like 3 weeks and the straps feel much rougher and cheaper and itchier than the ones I bought from crown and buckle. They also only had polished hardware which doesn't match the blasted finish on the OM at all. Oh well, they look pretty nice, although the colors are also a bit more faded than on the crown and buckles. Where should I try next? I liked the selection of this site and they were a little bit cheaper I guess, but they're a bit too low quality for me and it's not like expensive cloth straps are even that expensive.

And yes I put a nato strap on a gold dress watch, debate me. It was mostly just for fun but I think it actually looks better than I thought it would

The 60s ones are the coolest in my opinion, 70s one are okay sometimes but by the 80s Omega was struggling as a company and the Connies from that era are kind of shit. I think you could find a stainless steel one in decent shape for around $1000, but just make sure it's actually good shape because I just had to pay $400 to overhaul mine. If you manage to find one (or any other watch model) from his birth year that would probably be pretty awesome, but it might not be worth it to narrow it down that much.

I didn't buy mine so I can't really help you there, just check out ebay and chrono24 and there's lots up for sale. The one in the picture is a ref. 168.004 if you want to use that as a starting point, but there's loads of different ones. Look up the references with pie-pan dials or diamond shaped hour markers too because I think both of those features are really cool looking.

No I'm just kidding, Omega actually made some very good quartz watches. Watch nerds will turn their noses up at them (which means you can probably get them for a lot cheaper than they should be), but the watches are every bit as high quality as the mechanicals because that was still back when quartz watches were hot shit.

Constellations were the top of the line model so they came with automatic movements and they were all chronometer certified. Seamasters were a step down so they're not certified and they have hand-wind movements. But I think in many cases the seamaster movements were very similar minus the automatic winding parts and without being as carefully adjusted.

I have an oyster bracelet for my skx007 and an engineer bracelet for the OM in the photo. I don't really know what else I would get since bracelets are specific to the watch and have to fit onto it. Or are you talking about stuff like shark mesh and other metal strap type things that aren't watch-specific? I don't really like those very much.

But actually now that you mention it, supposedly Omega I have originally came on a gold mesh Milanese type band, but someone took it off the watch and melted it down. They actually look pretty nice in pic related and it's too bad that I don't have it any more, but there's no way I'm going to try to track one down and pay for a solid gold bracelet anytime soon and that's too much gold for my tastes anyway.

Another thing I don't understand comes to functionality. Specifically watches that don't really have any indicators. I understand that anyone who's seen a watch/clock before should recognize a general area of time without markers, but you see some watches that's often completely black with just the dials and I look at that and think "How are you supposed to know the exact time?"

From the users perspective, the only thing you'll notice is that the power reserve is shit, only like 15 hours. The movement was in extremely bad condition when I got it, and there's only so much I can do without sinking a ton of money in to it. That being said, the automatic mechanism works great and will keep the watch plenty wound throughout the day if you just wind it in the morning. The only other problems are just little things that don't actually affect the running of the watch, like how I had to swap out the 4th wheel so now its color doesn't match the other wheels.

That's a comfy photo and I want to love the watch but it just looks a tiny bit too cheap. The case needs some better finishing, the hands should be colored better and be a deeper blue, and the applied numerals need to be a bit sharper on the edges and less plasticy looking. Beautiful design though and I'm sure it looks great when you're not scrutinizing it up close.

you can still wear 42mm with that wrist size but it's the limit. wouldn't go bigger than that.
some 44mm watches still might look okay but come across as oversized already. there isn't really a rule of thumb because it depends on the horns of the watches, as well as case thickness and so forth.

I'd play it safe and get a 38-40mm watch. if the crown makes it 42mm you're at the limit.

I was looking at the seagull 1963, which is 42mm in diameter. I do realise that I could get the 38mm one, but I quite like the panda aesthetic of the white dial and black chronometres specifically, and I don't think you can get that on a 38mm watch.

I find it to be one of the slickest and likely most wearable non-complication watches around but it's a lot of money for what it is. Unless you /want/ to spend that much, by all means. But you'd probably be better off if you got something cheaper and waited to scratch this particular itch for a few years until they start showing up as condition 1 or 2 with the price that comes with it.

The Zenith looks like a better version of that quartz Seiko the guy who made his own strap for it over in /watch/ on /g/ has.

I like it a lot. it's just that you can't expect much from an automatic watch at this pricepoint. you have no option to handwind it but technically it doesn't matter. the lume is excellent and it has a nice comfortable weight to it.

true but the canvas strap will get annoying after a while because the weaving will dissolve around the holes on the backside of the strap.
that's why I'd rather have the original metal bracelet but a regular 18mm natostrap does the job too.

Don't polish cases, it ruins a watch. Especially if its one of those delicious 70s style Seikos with the flat surfaces and sharp edges, those are impossible to polish without rounding off all the corners and ruining the aesthetic.

I don't know how easy it is to find original Seiko crystals to fit that, but it might be possible, or at least something close enough to fit could probably be found. If it's a plastic crystal then just polishing it would probably be trivial, but I think King Seikos usually had mineral glass and I don't know how easy that is for a watchmaker to polish, it's pretty hard to do at home at least.

That'd be pretty damn easy, especially if the crystal is just acrylic and not mineral or sapphire or something. Like everyone else said, I wouldn't polish the case. The chance of messing up the original factory style finish is just too high for something like that.

They're great watches for the money, Just make sure you never pay MSRP for one. Pic is the tag that was on the watch when I bought it. It's a nice watch but it's not worth $275. I paid $80 on sale and with the quality of the watch I could see paying $150 for it but not a cent more. Invicta allows the average person to get their hands on a quality watch with great design and above average build quality.

That watch is an $80 watch and it's always been $80. Invicta ridiculously inflates their MSRP and then sells for way below it to make people who can't do any research think that they're getting a great deal. It's just one of the many ways in which invicta is a trash company.

The 8926 OB and the 9310 are the two invicta watches worth buying. I have them both and they're essitally the same watch with one major difference. The 8926 OB is a japan movement automatic watch and the 9310 (the one you're looking at) is a Swiss Quartz movment. There are also obvious aesthetic differences between the two as well but you can't go wrong with either one, I would personally go with the 9310 if I were you because it can be had cheaper, looks better IMHO, and has an overall better quality feel to it if you can live with the Quartz movement. If you really have to have an automatic though you can spend the extra $30 or so for the 8926 OB.

Thanks mayne, I like invicta though. They're cheapish and in my experience reliable as fuck and tend to look rather nice assuming you go with the submariner copies. I had an actual submariner for a while but it cost way too much to keep working so I sold it. I've his early had more people come up and compliment the invictas I've had more than the rolex which I find to be rather strange. Plus unlike the Rolex I can wear them every day without having to worry about a thing.

and while I like the look of the watch, I've seen people say that the movement is bad and that it's overpriced and very generic. So that got me thinking then, are there any similar watches in the same style that I should know about?

I like the simple shape of the case, and just the overall style of it, are there any similar ones that you could recommend for about 300 dollars?
Of course I'd prefer an automatic, but they're so expensive that I'll hold out on buying one of those until I can get a quality one.

The watch in my pic is a watch I found on ebay with the ref FEMAL001D6, but it only seems to lead to eastern European sites. I don't know if that specific one even exists in the west.

It depends on how much I crave it.
My dad is rich but I am living in Sweden/on my study allowance (everyone gets it, around 2800 per week) and 2000 kronors extra from my parents. I have basically no expenses except pepsi max/parties.

Either I could save up to a clock or ask my dad for money, in which case I could probably get around 10 000 kronors.

That's my price range, I guess. When I graduated I got a ring for like 17 000 kronors, so if I wish for it on a special occasion it wouldn't be unheard of. However, he tries to make me as independent as possible.

10000kr is an awkward price range. Anything you get there is going to only be negligibly different from a watch that costs 5000kr.
My advice is going to be that you start with something lower end save up some more money in the meantime. If you save up something closer to 35,000kr you can get something technologically impressive. At that point, you can buy an omega with all sorts of fancy shit like a coaxial escapement, silicon balance spring, and 15,000 gauss of magnetic resistance.

Since you appear to be pursuing a gearboner, I'm gonna recommend the seagull 1963. It's got the most complicated movement in its price range.
