The only way to build a thick neck is both forward and backward neck curls, either weighted or against resistance (your hands pressing against your neck). Wrestler bridges and similar exercises are also good but require a minimum amount of strength to do safely.

Heavy compounds like deadlifts and rows do not actually build the neck, only the traps.
