Man who was desiring a Catholic/Orthodox fragrance from the last thread here. I received my sample pack of seven fragrances. I am testing the UNUM LAVS first, and have just sprayed a single application on my neck after a shower. Here are my initial thoughts, will report back as the fragrance sets in and reveals more of its qualities. This is very nice so far. The nicest fragrance I've had before this was Terre D'Hermes.

UNUM LAVS (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES)
- Smoky, warm, peppery yet amber, sweet, and myrrh immediately after application
- A bit of pine, not much though
- Subtle frankincense and other incense revealed after a few minutes
- Old, antique quality, certainly very woody (smells of cedar, even though none in the recipe) and clean
- Desiring more jasmine or floral qualities, would like stronger frankincense... may be revealed in time

Yes, this reminds me of a Catholic cathedral, to be sure. Yet, it really seems a bit soapy at first, almost like sandalwood. It is nice so far, I'm excited to smell how it evolves...

=+=

Thanks again for the recommendations guys, here are the other six I will be sharing my experience with throughout the week:

If you're testing, may I suggest your forearm? If you want a waft, waft it; if you want to bury your nose in it, berry it like King Arthur. Front of neck is very close to your nose and will likely cause olfactory fatigue, while sides and back are great for projection or a post-hug compliment, but not ideal for testing.

Yep, someone recommended Bois D'Encens, but it was unfortunately too late to add to my samples order. I will keep it in mind in case I don't find one I really like in the 7 samples I listed above.

>>12735901
Thanks for the suggestion! I want to test each one for how it wears throughout the day, so my plan is to spray once on the neck a different one every morning for a week or so. Is this a good strategy? I'm pretty new to this. This UNUM LAVS, after one spray on the neck just 5 hours ago, has already turned into a very subtle scent, barely recognizable now!
>>
>>12736024
>Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to do exactly what you recommended not to do. Is this a good strategy?
>>
>>12736031
So you're saying spray on my inner forearm as a way to test throughout the day? Why is that better than wearing it the way I'd normally wear it..?
>>
>>12735481

>>

Cool man, sounds good. Let me get through the cathedral scents first and then maybe I'll move onto another theme. Which ones you have in mind? Winter is coming...
>>
>>12736058
dark romantic/gothic
>>
>>12736035
Because when you normally wear it, you're not trying to get a sense of what it smells like. You already know what it smells like. You're wearing it because you like how it smells and want to smell like that.

If you don't know what it smells like, you need to be able to actually smell it, and you can't very well put your nose against your neck to see how it smells on your skin. Yeah, you're getting the wafts, but you're missing the skin scent, which is just as important.
>>
>>12736035
Outer. Hair holds some juice off the surface of your skin so it progresses more slowly and holds on to top notes longer. The increased surface area also aids projection.

You wear perfume on your neck so others can smell it. Google olfactory fatigue; that's why you don't apply too close to your nose.

Plus, your forearm can move but your neck can't. You'll get a better sense of its projection from something you can change its distance from your nose.

Well, what can I say. You do you, man.

>>12736971
I am fully aware that they don't use real ambergris and that their supposed history is bullshit. I am also aware that Roja has much smaller profit margins. There is no cognitive dissonance, I enjoy Creed's scents so I use them I don't think they're an awesome company that can do no wrong, I just don't really give a fuck as long as they produce a product I enjoy. I never buy them retail anyways, so they can hike the price up as much as they want, zero fucks given.
>>
Dior homme or Intense which do you prefer? Does intense have better longevity/projection?
>>
>>12737007
Sorry that was towards the kind of people that pay full retail and are genuinely obnoxious about it. People like you that wait for grey prices are smart buyers IMO.
>>
What would be a good frag to go with muted greys and black? Just a monochrome, simple jumper/jeans look for colder weather? Joop Homme is nice and floral but I feel its too loud projection wise to go with the cosy look.

La Haine by Folie a Plusieurs

''The fragrance was created to capture specific moments of aggression and tension in the film with smells of a cold blade, polished gun steel and the burning from riots and rubber from drive by shootings. Built around these elements are the scent of concrete and the septic environmental smells that fill the walls of government housing projects.''

I'm wearing it right now, it really does smell industrial. It's like an adaptation of the ephemera trio all in one. If you want to smell like a cyborg minus the flesh, try that

Just sprayed the UNUM LAVS once on my outer forearm. So let's try this again.

Wednesday, September 6th, 2017
UNUM LAVS (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES)
- Frankincense hits right away, followed by myrrh and then the sweet jasmine
- Reminds me of a *new* cedar chest full of pine needles that has been thoroughly incensed
- Quite refreshing and clean without any metallic or synthetic notes
- Very fucking holy
- Pepper scent is faint
- Warm
- Floral qualities desired from when I sprayed on neck are now present, clearly

Overall, on initial application, this is quite a stunning and uplifting fragrance. It isn't at all surprising that a variation of this fragrance was used as a room spray for two of pope's robes. I have a feeling this fragrance will be my favorite even after testing all six samples I have left, but I'm going to do my best to give each one a fair shot. See above post for list of samples I will try within the next week or so.

I'm looking to try some new fragrances and I would like your advice on what to pick.

I have already tried the following...
> Aventus: It's really good, but my expectations were greater.
> Sauvage: Really sexy, really good.
> La Nuit De L'homme: Didn't like it at all. It smells synthetic and resembles others too much. Don't know what the big deal is.

Now, I'm thinking of trying The One by Dolce & Gabbana, or Invictus by Paco Rabbane.

Also, some other options I want to try...
> Legend by Mont Blanc
> Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford
> Artisan by John Varvatos

And...I'd like to try these too, but I don't know if I'll enjoy them...
> Voyage by Nautica
> Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani
> Spicebomb by Viktor & Rolf
> Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier

I like sexy, serious and mature scents, while I dislike fruity and sweet. I also go for class and elegance over style.

University student, 24, currently using Mugler Cologne as an everyday scent because it's subtle, clean, and inconspicuous. It doesn't necessarily even smell like perfume, instead just like a natural soap.

Can someone recommend something that performs a similar purpose but is more suited towards colder temps? Something that is low-key and pleasing enough to wear everyday but is not too "cologney". Was looking at molecule 01 which to me smells like a natural peppery cedar but the price seems a little steep for something to be worn everyday.

The very nature of cold weather frags is they can project through layers of clothing and less dense winter air, but you can always apply less. Couple suggestions that might fit the bill:

Body Kouros
Midnight in Paris
Rive Gauche pour Homme (not familiar with current version, but the metal cans can be had for not a lot on eBay still)

I really like both but personally enjoy Dior Homme more. As already said, it's more versatile, and already has great performance. DHI is great but takes a little more to appreciate, and it smells more chocolatey/gourmand than the original which I really have to be in the mood for.

>>12737629
DHP is a thick, musty, dry old man leather scent with a putrid rose note and practically no resemblance to DH or DHI. Stay away from this.

Wow, either you haven't worn DHP on you skin or your nose is averse to it for some reason.

It is more of a mature scent but not in the way you described. To say it has no resemblance to DH or DHI proves my point above, it is similar to both with less sweetness and the addition of leather notes which work really well. To me it is the better fragrance, not as versatile, but more sophisticated and complex, and definitely not an "old man" scent. it is simply more of a "man" scent.

If you are under 25 then disregard this, if you want class in a bottle and have the confidence to match, then it's one of the best

UNUM LAVS (AFTER ~8 HOURS NOTES)
- Softens quite a bit as time wears on
- Myrrh is strongest note left
- Not much floral, including jasmine and frankincense
- Peppery now, moreso than after initial spray
- Still very warm and amberesque
- Subtle; one spray not enough to last for a full day (with moderate strength or "trailing")

Overall: UNUM LAVS is quite nice. I don't have much to compare it to yet, but I don't think I'd mind wearing this on a regular basis. This is a super traditional feeling scent here, though, and it wouldn't seem right to wear it every single day, only maybe a couple times a week, like on Sundays and other semi-special occassions such as fine dining. This fragrance really encourages you to pray, wear black, drive a Bentley, and wear a gold necklace. It is no wonder two popes used it for their robes. This is some holy shit. I'd like something that feels more "modern" for an everyday wear.

Maybe the latter, I remember when I first received a sample, I hadn't even opened the package and I could already smell rose. I thought they must have been handling something else with a strong rose note when they made my order. The I took out the vile of DHP and sprayed once on my hand, and it was a blast of the same overpowering, pungent rose note. I've tested it a few more times and the rose isn't so prominent now, although still very present.

To me it still has the iris of DH and DHI, but its less powdery and more waxy. Also much less sweet as you say and the leather is cranked up, way up. I can appreciate some aspects of it now, but it's still really not my thing, too rich for me but if you enjoy it then all the power to you.

I know that feel. Haven't spent quite that much, but I'm at around 3-400 or so every month. Been cutting back, wasn't planning on buying anything this month, but I had to get my mother something nice for being awesome and helping me buy a condo.

I just see a new frag somewhere that catches my eye and I get intrigued, and that little voice in my head tells me to buy it. I fight it, I put it off, but sooner or later, I always seem to wind up adding it to my collection.

I really gotta cut back, shit gets expensive.

Good morning bros! It's a new day, so it's a new fragrance. This morning...

=+=

JUBILATION XXV (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES: OUTER FOREARM)

- Very perfumey, quite feminine
- Spicy, almost cinnamon scented
- Sweet, frankincense clearly rounding out the initial notes
- Slightly floral
- Oddly smells of balsam wood
- Warm

This one is interesting. I was expecting something with more soapy, detergent qualities, but this one is really quite warm, amber, and round from the initial application. Spicy notes take a back seat, but they're definitely riding along. Balsam wood permeates the entire nose, or at least that's what I think it smells like. Certainly not nearly as High Church as the UNUM LAVS I tried yesterday; no surprise there, the LAVS is literally The Pope's Robe. Jubilation XXV is nice thus far, with a distinct combination of wood, spice, and floral notes. When "burying my nose" into it like King Arthur's sword in the stone, my mind's eye imagines a kind of all-encompassing amber aura. This is a very warm and comforting scent, and it's honestly almost sleep-inducing. Not sure if "Jubilation" is the way I'd describe it. Interesting. The notes don't jump out at you like I'd expect from the name; this isn't one I'd wear to a party. Let's see how it evolves as they day progresses... Until then, anyone tried Jubilation before? Thoughts?

'Til later...

=+=
>>
>>12739330
One more note:

When going for a scent reminiscent of a cavernous cathedral, I expect something expansive and vast. Jubilation doesn't deliver here yet, on the initial application. It's very homely, stationary, stable. Lacking the strength of frankincense and myrrh, and the more piney woods!

Evening of September 7th 2017
AMOUAGE JUBILATION XXV (OVERALL NOTES)

- By end of day, smells sour
- Rose certainly reveals itself more in the middle of the day
- Medicinal by end of day as well, not pleasant-- almost like rubbing alcohol-- ick!
- Does smell like Arabic women, not necessarily a bad thing (it's a bad thing)
- Only redeeming quality by the end of the day is its potency and warm, woody base

This fragrance was okay after the initial application this morning, but as the day wore on, I really grew to hate it. After someone told me that sand niggers wear it (elite sand niggers are still sand niggers), I couldn't get the image of dirty, robed brown fatties sweating their balls off in the desert and spraying this to try and cover their inherently putried body odor. Absolutely haram.

Objectively, though, the stuff really isn't great. Who in the fuck pays for this stuff? The warmth initially is pleasant enough, with what I call a "balsam wood" base note. The description on many websites says this fragrance has notes of rose, coriander, orange, and other bullshit. I couldn't disagree more, except for the rose. There definitely is a bit of rose in here, and it's fairly nice, as rose fragrance typically is. The problem here is that, combined with that wood base note, and the overly sweet and spicy others (cinnamon, flowers, honey, frankincense), it doesn't age too well on the skin. By the end here, I just want to wash it off and throw it out. I won't, but I also won't try it again until I've thoroughly forgotten about it-- and I doubt I ever will.

Unless you are Arabic, don't buy this. If you are, enjoy. It doesn't smell *that* bad if you already smell bad. ;)

Hey guys, I'm new to this shit and I could use some advice. I live out in the sticks, and the selection of fragrances at the stores in my area seems to be kind of a joke. I figured I'd be better off ordering some of those little sample bottles from one of those sample sites, but I have no idea where to begin. The infographic is kind of overwhelming.

Unfortunately, since I've only ever worn extremely cheap and shitty stuff that dumb teenagers buy, I really don't have a lot of criteria that could be used to give me advice, but I think I can try to narrow it down a little.

Basically, I'm looking for something well-suited for fall/winter. If possible, I'd like something flexible enough that I could wear it both while just hanging out with friends and stuff and also on casual dates. I'm not looking for anything super masculine and musky (masculine is fine, I just don't want to smell like one of those douchebags who wear too much cologne that you can smell a mile away.) In the spirt of fall and winter, I'm kind of leaning towards a comfy and cozy kind of smell (possibly even ideal for cuddling and shit? I know it sounds gay but that's the kind of stuff I associate with the upcoming time of year).

Honestly, I don't even know where to begin when it comes to specific scents I might want. I guess I haven't consciously paid a whole lot of attention to my sense of smell.

I'd like to avoid super pricey stuff, but I'm ok with going like mid range price-wise if I find something I like. I don't want to spend tons of money on this stuff as a newbie, but I'm also not going to be a dumbass and buy cheap, low quality shit.

Sorry if I haven't provided enough information for decent reccomendations, but since I'm so new to this I'm really open to whatever suggestions you guys might want to throw my way. I assume this requires a lot of trial and error, so I'm ok with going in a little blind and trying what anonymous strangers tell me to.

Well, if you really have no idea, most sample sites sells themed sample packs, like "top male fragrances, 2015" or "essential male fragrances" and the like. I'd start with a few of those, give yourself an idea of what sorts of scents you like. There are so many different kinds of fragrances, if you're not sure what you like, it's best to just order a variety so you'll at least get an idea of if you want something sweet, woody, spicy, fresh, floral, etc.

>>12740832
Yeah, that's a good way to go. Once you find a few fragrances you enjoy, you can look up their note profiles on Basenotes or Fragrantica and identify particular notes and accords that you like. From there, it becomes much easier to find new fragrances you may want to try.
>>
Review of some frags that came today:

>Pure Malt (Sample)
Smells like a barrel of whiskey, I'm not really sure where I'd ever wear it, it's seriously boozy like alcoholic level. The opening was pretty terrible, smelled almost urine like to me but after 5-10 minutes it turned into a very boozy scent. I can really appreciate it in this aspect and it's actually quite amazing for how much it really smells like booze but I'm not sure how wearable it is.

>Versace Man (100ml)
Blind buy. I already have Man Eau Fraiche and they do actually have the same kind of character. I'm not sure if I've ever tried the 'fresh' flanker first but it's quite interesting going in reverse. Surprisingly likeable and softer than I was expecting, but still very masculine. I think it would actually make a great summer fragrance. Excellent.

>Green Irish Tweed (Sample)
I've already tried this on card on a shop once but didn't really like it. It's my second foray into Creed after Aventus which I was disappointed by and thought was rather average. On second try and on skin I actually think this is great and far better than Aventus. It's just so... nice. It smells kind of like slightly chlorinated water and sticking your nose into a basket of freshly washed towels. I plan on comparing it with my bottle of Cool Water soon. From memory it's softer than Cool Water and goes more towards the laundry scent.

If you only have the original, make your next flanker purchase EN Sport. It's incredible. But to answer your question, ENalE is a woodier, classier, smoother version of EN. They round the edges off the in your face rooty vetiver. It's very nice, but as one who owns all three, ENS gets way more mileage than the other two.

Aurum finally arrived today, a few days late but he was generous enough to give me about 1 ml of ACN as well a sample of it and both truffle attars, with PI and Ame Sombre (the good quality version is the only one he makes now AFAIK). Sampling Aurum so far, Kafka's review is pretty much on the nose, a huge unapologetic rose at first sniff, getting a little bit of black tea too. The spices, florals and musky facets are a really lovely undercurrent, so worth the wait.

Morning of Friday, September 8th, 2017
AMOUAGE - INTERLUDE MAN (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES)

- Very strong pinewood
- Kind of herbacious, oregano
- Reminds of a wooden chest, cedar
- Clean, not smoky or incense-like
- A tiny bit of pepper
- Vanilla on the top

This one is pleasant. Not too sweet, but getting close. Very feminine, though, I really miss the smoke/incense, especially since I'm looking for a "High Church" fragrance. This doesn't remind me of a cathedral at all, to be honest, as frankincense or myrrh notes haven't revealed themselves at all yet. Time will tell.

Until later...

Millesime imperial was underwhelming.

I guess samplesperg was overhyping it and I took that bait.

I don't think it's bad by any means, but it smells fruity and almost cheap. Not quite. I was expecting a more strongly citrusy, salty scent. This smells like something that I would expect to pay maybe a quarter of its actual price for.

Day is almost done, time for some overall thoughts on Amouage Interlude Man.

=+=

Evening of Friday, September 8th, 2017
AMOUAGE - INTERLUDE MAN (OVERALL NOTES)

- Sweetens with time
- Projection is strong throughout
- Bergamot, balsam-esque
- Harsh pine and herbacious notes disappear after a couple hours
- Still exhibits vanilla-like notes in the end
- Pepper gone by end

Overall, I am not impressed. Both samples I've received from Amouage have been lackluster; I will not be inclined to give them a shot in the future, unless for free. The Interlude Man is as its name suggests: temporary, uncertain, just passing through, etc. It's a fragrance not sure of itself, not sure of which way to go. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think the number of people who can relate with this transient quality are either not interested in fragrances at all or are precisely quite rare. The frankincense note never appeared, even tough it's listed in its notes. This fragrance is best suited for trannies and androgs. It's a sleepy scent, not lively at all, and the notes that do make it pop a bit just fade quickly over the hours.

COMME DES GARCONS - AVIGNON (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES)

- Fresh and expansive frankincense note hits immediately
- Myrrh takes passenger seat
- Very clean, very churchlike
- Patchouli in the background
- Subtle vanilla
- Pleasant smoke

Avignon smells rich, expansive, and godly-- close to exactly what I'm looking for. I love this. The frankincense and myrrh notes are right up front, where they should be, and the supporting notes of patchouli, vanilla, emeli, cistus oil, and others provide a fresh and clean rounding to the holy notes. Very well done, not surprised it's as popular as it is. Thanks to the first anon who said Avignon is a must-try for someone looking for a Catholic church fragrance. The subtle smokiness combined with the direct injected frankincense and myrrh with the addition of hints of floral and vanilla make this scent well-rounded yet pure and certain in its intent and execution. Really very nice, will be a pleasure sniffing it throughout the day and observing how it evolves.

Top fucking kek Jeremy.

I know winter is coming but I just impulse bought this because I've wanted since I first smelled it oer a year ago and clean is seasonless imo. I love this shit, it has the fresh showergel feel of Sauvage without the pepper, and the citrus of Versace Man Eau Fraiche without the annoying heavy woody-amber overdose. This is a perfect weekend chilling out scent IMO, I can't think of anything cleaner right now. Bottle looks fucking amazing too, I love the aesthetic of white frosted glass. So far I think this is honestly my favorite of the DH line.
>>
>>12744144
I can't quite piece the words right but it makes most other fragrances out there feel like confused, arbitrary concepts.DHC presents itself so clearly. Just having three notes really makes it cohesive and appear as a single whole. Plus it's just pleasant and uplifting.
>>
Do all Tom Ford vanilla scents dry down into a feminine, disgusting vanilla?
>>
>>12744455
Yeah, if you have shit taste
>>
>>12744543
Please elaborate. Which of his scents don't do this?
>>
>>12744586
I'm not sure which fragrances you're referencing. He only really has one explicitly vanilla fragrance: Tobacco Vanille, which I wear a fair bit and have never thought of as feminine.
The only other is Black Orchid, which isn't even that vanilla heavy.

>>
Damn so far these attar samples I got along with the Aurum are really impressive. Anyone that wants a lovely coffee aroma with some vanillin (to create the bourbon vanilla feel) and some slight muskiness, go for Cafe Ambre Noire. The oud really complements it all, its really comforting. To think you could get this for around the same price as a designer that will last you just as long as a full bottle. I guess it pays off to look extensively into stuff like this rather than impulsively buying from the shelves.

EdT of course

I tried it first a couple of weeks ago and didn't really like it but I'm starting to appreciate it more now. Seems like a very formal, masculine scent. Only bought the 50ml because I doubt I'll wear it that much.

COMME DES GARCONS - ZAGORSK (INITIAL APPLICATION NOTES)

- Pine
- Strong frankincense
- Hint of cinnamon
- Cedar
- Berries

This is a strong scent, quite different from the Avignon, yet still Church-like in overall aura. The berries here are nice, and they add to my willingness to wear something like this on and around Christmas season. It's fresh and cool, yet the subtle sweetness and warmth of the cedar and berries round it out.

Final thoughts on Avignon?
>>
>>12746567
Yup, Avignon is my second favorite so far, just after UNUM LAVS. I noticed through the day that it held its projection pretty well, but not as well as LAVS. The notes evolved only mildly, with the typical tops disappearing first after about 4 hours. It's a great fragrance, an arguable must have for winter or just for Sundays or special religious occasions. Very nice!

>>12746335
I appreciate these writeups my dude. Was actually contemplating Avignon when I came across this.

No problem my man. Glad you like 'em, I'm not very experienced so take my opinions for what they are. UNUM LAVS is best though so far, definitely try a sample of Avignon and that at least! Got a couple more to write about too... Until later.

Learning Latin and visiting churches inspired it all, but desu I'm not sure I'll have enough occassions to use it for another couple years. Now that I've started reading /fra/ again I think I need to sample some of the "essentials" I've heard mentioned here over and over, like Sauvage... Perhaps I'll do an "essentials" themed review set next.

I'm a 30 y/o introvert, above average face, trimmed beard, muscular but have some gut development going on, wear dark and earth tone basics.
Don't mind anything mainstream, as long as it's not sweet and wouldn't make me appear older/less approachable.

COMME DES GARCONS - ZAGORSK (OVERALL NOTES)

- Sweetens with time
- Pine and cedar remain primary
- Frankincense lasts but not myrrh
- Projection fades quickly

Another great fragrance here, I place it in tie for second place with Avignon. While Avignon reminds me of an ornate cathedral in an old city, Zagorsk reminds me of a rustic cathedral in the countryside, among pines and the crisp winds of winter. Still an incense scent, the holy notes are primary, but while Avignon is more smokey and amberesque, Zagorsk is cooler, more piney. Reminds me of Brother Nathanael as he stands out in nature to deliver a monologue to his YouTube followers. Having grown up among pines, I have memories of climbing them, getting my hands sticky with sap, and smelling the sharp, tannic freshness of it throughout the day. I love the smell of pine, to say the least, so its combination here with the classic incense notes makes for a simply glorious aura. Very good. Great to be sure.

>>
>>12748103
Gym: frags do not mask BO, they mix with it and smell even worse. Just don't do it.

Plane: someone who may not like your scent is stuck next to you for an extended period and cannot leave. Just common courtesy. Flying sucks enough without having to get a headache from smelling some douche's horrible fragrance the whole time.

Hospital: come on, I really hope I don't have to explain this one.
>>
>>12748118
What about a funeral or the morgue
>>
>>12748118
Ok so any deo you would recommend for the gym?
>>
>>12748124
Funeral, I guess, maybe, as long as it's an appropriate, formal-smelling scent. Like, don't be a dumbass and go to a funeral wearing Ultra Male or some shit.

Morgue, fuck if I know, man. I don't think your average person spends enough time in a morgue for it to really be a consideration. I'd imagine it would fall under the umbrella of hospital, given that morgues tend to be in hospitals.
>>
>>12748138
Whatever deodorant is probably fine. Don't think it matters much, as long as you aren't fucking swimming in Axe or whatever.
>>

>>

>BO
Not just that, but when you exert yourself your body temp goes up, increasing projection, and couple that with sweat and the overall thick atmosphere in a typical gym... Just don't.

>>12748124
Funeral: if you can't be tasteful then best to wear nothing.

Morgue: unless it is in the aforementioned hospital, I don't think the dead care.
>>
>>12748193
