I'm serious, start at buzzcut (I go for 2 or 1, I'd say 1 is best).

If you don't like it, you'll gradually go through various hairstyles until you find one you like.

Keep the back and sides short if you want to look fashionable with no effort. You'll look like everybody else but then that's fashion I guess. More importantly you'll look more attractive than you look now. You face is actually alright, I see potential there, but the hair is absolutely letting you down.

You probably like metal or skateboarding or something. You don't need long hair to enjoy these things, cut it off if you want to look better (at least in the opinion of the masses)

Bro, get some good reworkable hairspray. The cost is worth it. I use pomade or fiber depending on the final look, but after styling, I always give a good spray of Sebastian Re-Shaper hairspray. Has climate protection (moisture will kill your 'do) and allows me to run my fingers through and over my hair when I want to push it up again or lay it down. I have thin blonde hair and it's not thick or anything. It is amazing stuff.

Nah, short back and sides is almost always best. If you're worried about your ears that will limit you but a point to bare in mind is that everyone thinks their ears stick out too much when they go from long to short hair. It's likely just an illusion because of how you're used to seeing yourself.

The most important thing with finding a new hair style is having the courage to walk into the barbers and ask for something completely different t to what is in your comfort zone, and not giving a fuck what your friends might think.

I'm in my 30s and have almost always had very thick, very straight long hair. I also have a giant oval face/head with high temples.

(My hair has always looked "receding" ever since I was a teenager but it hasn't actually moved at all.)

lockhart's medium Is what I use to achieve just that. If you comb it with a fine tooth comb then that will make a huge difference in the hold as well. Also look for more waxy pomades if you don't want the 'too heavy' look. Products like Lockhart's and schmiere especially the medium holds are great for just that due to their high wax to petrolatum content. hope you see this!

I'm mostly frustrated with having to be so careful when I bathe/style it. Unless I'm super gentle I'll find myself with a handful of hair I've ripped out. Also it knots up in the shower. I never had these issues with shorter hair.

I haven't had that issue with mine and its creeping up on 8, and I wash my hair fairly aggressively.

also you have to remember that you only think you're ripping out your hair, in reality you lose the same amount of hair in the shower regardless its just harder to notice when its short for a number of reasons.
