I want to replace the strap on this:

It's not so obvious on the white one, but the black one's strap looks awful.
For the white one, what's a suitable metal strap replacement?

quartz is degenerate, you want something that uses only springs and gears.

the crown is the thing that you pop out to set the time and (on a real watch) wind up the movement.

I see! Is quartz just battery powered? And whats wrong with the crown on that watch in particular?
>>
>>11989773

it's smooth all around for no reason. the crown should have little fluted ridges so you can move it.

watch design is about a harmonious union of form and function. the skagen shits and pisses all over function in favor of a shallow fast-fashion form that expresses no understanding of the 1,000 year history of european watchmaking. it is offensive.

Expensive watch quality claims are just memes.

Totally worth the price if you like the design and the idea of knowing that your watch it completely powered by kinetic energy. But if you buy a pricey watch for its timekeeping functionality or its durability then you are deluded, a $10 quartz will keep the time just as well.

I very almost bought them myself - they look great after all and are seemingly well priced for that kind of look.
After doing some research it turns out that you're most definitely not getting your value for money. Some argue that you're getting slightly less. If you get MVMT watches, do so for the aesthetics, not for the actual quality for the watch.

Hi guys.
I'm looking to buy my first "real" watch and I've narrowed it down to these 3.
I don't really know which one I prefer the most, on one hand I like the look of the first one a lot, but then again I think I would feel too fancy wearing it.

Therefore there is the same model, but in black to seem more neutral.

At last there is the more clean classic watch which also appeals very much to me, because I will use it for just everyday stuff.

It's just so hard to choose! Therefore I wanted to hear you guys' opinion, which of these 3 do you prefer and why?

Feel free to post your favorite watches and why you like them too!

First, loosen up on those bracelets. And secondly, make sure you get either a CA53W or DBC611.
You may be going full "Mechanical Engineering is my major" neckbeard, but you don't want to go as far as to get one of the curvy Databanks from the 90s/2000s.

Seiko 5 blue dial, stainless steel a good step up that I dont have to synchronize the time every monday?
>>
>>11996283

i only have one timex (the cheapest plastic one) and it keeps better time than my seiko SNK. you should expect ±8 seconds a day with a seiko 5.

if your timex is off by more than a half-second a day then something is wrong with it. a quartz watch should typically be ±0.5 seconds a day. there are not mechanical wristwatches that consistently perform that well in any price range.

if you want your watch to be closer than a properly functioning quartz, and if you don't want to have to set the time weekly, then what you probably want is an atomic radio receiver watch. casio makes some nice ones in a variety of styles. i guess you could also get a smartwatch that will synchronize itself to your phone.
>>
>>11996299

My timex is off by 2 m 35+ seconds, wound it back into time last tuesday. I guess I should research into watches a little more than damn. Nothing bothers me more than having the wrong time.
>>
>>11996304

two minutes A DAY? yeah it's broken.

two minutes a week, you'll get about the same amount of error with a seiko 5.

They aim to auction off more special/rare watches.
The Amphibia's are around 60 euro's new on Ebay and the Komandirskies are around 25 new.

Can I sell rare Soviet watches on there as long as there are no available modern versions of them in the market?

Rare might be a bit of an overstatement, more like unusual pieces and collectors items.
Catawiki takes 9% of the total price.

That shouldn't be a problem, they recently did a bit of a rules overhaul to prevent people from flipping newly bought watches.

I use Catawiki because I think the people that visit the site are a bit more specific in what they want.

>>11999518
Most people will think "Wow Gucci", while some that actually know watches will think you're a dumbass who bought a $600 quartz watch.
>>
>>11999518
The people that hate Gucci and other fashion watches are the ones into horology.
Fashion watches are supposed to look good, but they're not necessarily any good from a horological stand point. Heck, if you're going for looking good, then there's nothing wrong with that, this is /fa/ after all where it's form over function.
>>
>>11999537
in actuality its 9mm, is that thick for a case?
>>
>>11999550
It's personal preference. I'm not him/her and I personally think it looks good.
>>
>>11999550

"thick" begins at 15mm

blank minimalist <10mm look is strictly for turbofags who are frightened by designs that balance form and function as a harmonious horological achievement, and instead flee into the zero-T cosmetic safety of cases and dials designed by dabblers
>>
>>11999590

best way to think of it is that the skagen-wearer is complementary—and equivalent in taste—to the invicta-wearer.
>>
>>11999383

there isn't a rule of thumb with case size, really. it depends not only on wrist diameter but also the aspect ratio of your wrist and the overall geometry of the case. for example, lug-to-lug length matters more than case diameter. for example, if the extreme ends of the lugs come within 2.5mm of overhanging your wrist then it is almosdt certainly too long. you are looking for the band to visibly and gently bend away from the lugs for a bit.

there is no way to tell for sure whether a watch will look be big for you without trying it on, or at least setting the case against your wrist. there are simply too many variables.
>>
>>11999383
Google "watch sizing measurements" for some convenient print outs and guides.
The print outs allow you to check what the watch will look like against your wrist for yourself.
>>
>>11991484
Powered by potential energy eh?
>>
>>11999755
Kinetic energy and potential energy aren't the same.
His/her post is wrong though. To be technically correct, the kinetic energy from your wrist gets stored as elastic potential energy in the spring of your automatic.
>>
>>11999784

he's also wrong in saying that quartz keeps time "as well". quartz keeps time measurably better than any of my mechanical watches.
>>
>>11999792
Absolutely. If you have the money for it you can however go for those quartz automatic hybrids which aid the timekeeping of automatics via quartz.

>>
>>11999821
>absolutely disgusting
I'm not a personal fan of them either, but it's for those that wish to strike a balance between automatic and quartz watches. If you don't like them, then don't by them.
>you should do what i do. get a GW-5000. use it to set your mechanical pendulum-regulated clock, and then use that to set your mechanical watch of choice each morning as you leave home.
That's what most mechanical watch owners don't want to do. Setting it every day is annoying, and if you have to set it that often then something is wrong with your watch.
Also, why not just sync it via a good website?

I'm not really sure what this has to do with anything, but fyi I do actually have a girlfriend so a dakimakura isn't necessary, and what makes you think I own a Skagen when we're discussing automatics?
From the content of your past few posts it seems like you're just trying to troll or be toxic, so that's the end of this discussion on my side.

Well that's an easy one, they just wear whatever they find on the rack as is. They don't tailor it or check the fit. Watches come with the metal strap by default so that's what they wear.

Shitty colour scheme but other than that cool. Looks like it's done some fucking time in the trenches though.
>>
>>12007055
Looks much better in real life. I think the colour scheme is for sure uncommon. People dont compliment it until theyve seen me wear it a few times, until they catch it in the right lighting and they say "that's ACTUALLY a nice watch." Like it grows on people or something.

Still can't capture the shiny bits but the rose gold makes some cool green and red iridescent bits. Black faced watches look very nice in dim light, if they have light coloured or reflective hands. Thx

I think quartz watches don't have a place in the world anymore

They were a novel idea but it's for people who can't afford a mechanical movt equipped watch....

We have cell phones now so what's the point ?

Not at all my dude.

I like the thing. Does exactly what I need it to do, and looks good while doing it.

For 170$ and all the shit it came with I am probably going to smash it in 3 years and get another one from the warranty.
