Anyone here into beekeeping? I'm going to start soon and would like some tips.
How do you really start, is my question.
I have the boxes and equipment ready, but need to know some things.
Do you start with just a queen? Does she build it all from scratch (per se)?
I have a breeder that will sell me a fertilized queen. Do I need anything else?
Thank you, 4chins
You don't start with just a queen. She would starve. Queen bees are never alone.
Get a space set up in your back yard and get acquainted with some local beekeepers, because you will need their expertise and advice. Shit happens with beehives that's hard to describe and diagnose over a Chinese Cartoon forum.
In the spring, after the swarms come, there should be nuc boxes around for sale. These typically run around $100. This is the start of the hive. You're also going to need a suit, a smoker, frames, housing, probably a fence, etc.

Also >>>/an/ has bee keepers as well. Your best local resource for second hand equipment, queens, bees, and advice will be the, "Beekeeper's Association" they are pretty much world wide, but may be unto themselves in whatever other country besides the US.
Any of you guys keep solitary bees? I tried leafcutters this year but I think they all flew away ;-;

You can start now locating and preparing food sources for them. If you have some space that you can plant prolific blooming plants like clover, that would be great.
