Non-tool things every general workshop needs sitting around. Stuff in cans, jars, bottles, sprays edition.

A Hudson or equivalent compressed air sprayer so you don't pay out the arse for aerosol cans (you can pressurize them with a hand pump if no air compressor) and some poly squirt bottles are useful kit to spray your spooge of choice.

WD-40 is mostly good for cleaning and very good drilling/cutting/tapping lube for aluminum.

Have some useful recipes for cleaners and penetrants:

IE its an oil that has rust and corrosion inhibitors in it. You "displace" the water by spraying oil on it, and since now its doused in oil and inhibitors it shouldnt rust even though it was wet.

How the hell has no one mentioned brake part cleaner yet? I use this stuff for everything, including spraying it on my hands when I'm done working on something dirty. It's like alcohol based so it stays wet for a second then just evaporates without leaving a residue. Notable example - after changing my oil and to get oil off the garage floor, cleaning food grease off a metal BBQ tray and wiping down Stainless steel part of BBQ pit, wipe off my hands after painting / varnishing / staining / dying stuff. Even something as simple as wiping off your tools when you're done. If you need grease, dirt, oil, paint, stain, etc. cleaned up then this is your guy. I always stock 3 or 4 bottles at all times

Protip: Always get the "non-chlorinated" version and DON'T get it on any paint jobs, it'll strip the clear and paint right off.
>>
>>1186907
Tell that to the many machinists who love WD for machining aluminum.
>>
>>1186996
>It's like alcohol based

Read the MSDS. It's mostly acetone and toluene with some methanol.

It is insanely handy though, and the cheap Walmart variety is the best deal by far of the three in your pic. I buy it by the case.

Using it for hand cleaner isn't smart though. Nitrile gloves make that unnecessary.

You decide to go with a piano hinge yet, Anon, and have plans for stops on the swinging door? And are you gonna go play Moses and part the Red Sea with all that WD-40? Because the ONLY thing you are allowed to use it for is FUCKING DISPLACING WATER! Nothing else. No using it as cutting oil, stopping squeaky hinges, loosening up a stuck nut, after shave... None of that. Only WATER DISPLACEMENT! It's in the name, after all. Just ask /diy/, they'll tell you.
>>
>>1187592
The piano hinge that was available at Lowe's seemed super flimsy, and I haven't looked much past that the last few days. Thinking I might see if I can find heavier duty hinges that have no holes drilled yet, and then cut/drill to fit(that center pillar behind it limits my options) and then bolt it on, or check online for heavier duty piano hinge. I'll look into it on my days off. By stops you mean to keep shit from falling out? I'll get around to it before I fill it. WD-40 is solely for cutting aluminum, because I've heard that it works better than normal cutting oil(so far so good).

Ammonia & dawn for degreasing small parts (mix with water and don't inhale)
Rubber erasers for polishing off small amounts of water stains/smears/fingerprints
Paper towel storage you keep separate from your kitchen/household paper towel storage so when you spill something and there's only a bit left on the roll you're not smearing grease all over in your haste.
A shop vac.
At least 2 sharpies in case one stops working mid-work and you need to erase the marks you made (rub sharpie on sharpie marks and quickly wipe to erase if you didn't know)

Luxury: An oven, range, or at least a small electric hot plate. Oven allows for drying things that will fit in it (lowest setting) and for things like killing woodworm. Stovetop lets you heat water for chemistry bullshit (degreasing works better with very hot water, as an example.) Keeping kitchen and shop separate is generally a good idea for safety and health but it's not always an option due to price and space.

>I heard carb cleaner has oils in it to help not totally dry carburetors.

You can read the MSDS for any cleaner you like to see what's in it. I've been cleaning carbs since the 1970s and I prefer the cheapest toluene/toluol spray cleaner available so I buy it by the case at Walmart. It's harmless to soft parts.

If you need to soak carbs I recommend Pine-Sol (not generic pine oil). It doesn't bother soft parts or plastic. I've used the commercial dips including the old, strong methylene chloride Hydro-Seal (which destroys seals) and after trying Pine-Sol I don't miss it. I soak overnight and agitate heavy soils with a parts brush. It also works fine in ultrasonic cleaners.

Helps to break free stuck fasteners, especially when using heat isn't an option. Helps create a temperature differential for press fit stuff, like bearings.

Ended up just putting a bunch more shitty hinged on it. Should be fine. With all the hinges, it's probably going to be around the rated weight. They'll be rated way lower than they can survive, and I assume part of the issue is that too much weight will twist them, but 7 hinges outta have enough stability to solve that part.

It's better to have all your flammable stuff all in one place so if a fire does start in your shop your not contending with a hundred different places that might explode. Just be smart about where you have your storage, don't place it right next to a spot where you do your welding. Y'know

No idea. It would probably help some, it does help clean up corrosion, but it's primary purpose is DeOxidizing. Bit expensive to try, you're probably better off with a penetrating oil.

It won't penetrate into the threads. BTW when you finally remove the fasteners and the threads with them then end up installing thread repair inserts, hit your new bolts with anti-seize. Dry threads (unless manufacturer specified for some reason) are evil. Anti-seize and Loctite have opposite goals but neither promote seizure because they are barriers.

I use Fast Orange, Gojo, and Lava at work, all are pretty mediocre unless you spend 5 minutes scrubbing each time.

The best I've used is pic related. It's the best scrub for poison oak/sumac rashes too.

>keeps the itch away for hours
>drys it out
>removes any remaining urushiol
>feels absolutely orgasmic on a rash

Only drawback is that you absolutely have to use lotion on your hands at the end of the day if you want to avoid saltine-cracker skin.

Yeah, didn't think so... was hoping for a miracle. I've had a situation where an intake manifold gasket turned into removing the head because a bolt broke. Only the bolt head broke, and the whole hole was full of corrosion. Also, Chrysler likes to use dozens of little 6mmx1.25 steel bolts to hold plastic parts on. And the plastic parts have brasd sleeves the bolts go through. Like the engineers worked out how to maximize corrosion.

Takes me back. My dad had a Hamm's Bear sign over his workbench. This was the 60's.
>>
Moved into this old house n everything was pretty cleaned out.
Out in the garage there was this long shelf with old coffee & peanut butter & small jars screwed into the bottom of it.
These jars had everything in them. Nuts bolts hooks cotter pins. You just walk in n look up n can look in the bottom to see what's in it & unscrew it if you need it. Every 1 who sees it says their grandfather had the same thing.

After 10 years, I'm still using them... I hardly ever go to the hardware store. My garage is stocked. Every1 should have 1. & keep it organized & pass it on.
I thank the old man who lived here every time I find something I need.
