I've made pocket survival kits as gifts. Everyone loved them. I also made a solar charger. The solar charger is easy as shit. Radioshack has a 6v .5A solar panel that is the exact same size as the altoids tin. add 4 1.5v ni-mh AA batteries. Then take apart a cigarette lighter USB charger. Wire it up and your set.

I store screws from scrapped computers in them. One for coarse thread, one for fine, one for standoffs/fan/misc screws.

I have several tins holding various items in my edc.

One holds some steel wool, a mini bic, and magnesium fire starter with a bit of and hacksaw blade, and a smaller tin filled with dryer lint.

Another one with assorted condoms, a couple packets of ky from the hospital (works great for reattatching vac and coolant lines), a tube of chapstick, and, oddly enough, a few altoids.

Another one packed to bursting with nothing but tp, a few spare hair-ties to keep it closed and couple wet-naps tucked into the rubber bands.

One just for tobacco, since I switched from cigs to a pipe. Two sewing kits, one heavy one light.

One with various otc medicines, ibuprofen, aspirin, dramamine, benadryl, imodium, and no-doze mostly.

The last one has a prepaid card for my phone, $50 cash, a few sheets of scratch paper, a golf pencil, another mini bic, a razor blade, a pack of gum, a condom, 4 Motrin and a single .22lr just in case.

I go into all kinds of places at work, it helps to be prepared for anything. I've used the steel wool to clean a dirty spark plug and get moving again, then that same night used it to start a fire.

Tp is always handy, "special" tips sometimes happen, there have been times I needed to tote a large amount of water and had no bucket... Trojan to the rescue.

The uses are endless...

Im addicted to these things, at lease the tins they come in are useful.

I use them as ashtrays.

When open, the lid makes them great for balancing on uneven surfaces such as a laying woman's thigh.

When closed, they're very good at containing the ash and cig butts, even when knocked to the ground by clumsy movements.

I have 3 empty copenhagen snuff cans (they're wax lined fiberboard) filled with shaving and wax firestarter. I use my old grizzly cans to put my weed and pills in as well. I've also made some decorative things out of empty cans.
