ffmpeg

Probably not gonna do better than avidemux2 for Windows. Kdenlive is fairly alright on linux and will run on a virtual machine alright, but it can be slow and crashy. Very resource hungry.

check the 'license' column
however, all of the titles are free if you google ''torrent name_of_software''

Blender isn't too bad. Take an hour or two and watch the tutorials to get rid of a lot of headache with the menu options.

no offense, great thread and all, but would you reckon this is more of a /g/ topic?

OpenShot
If you use Linux.
For Windows, a combination of Virtualdub and Avisynth works well. You can add an external video encoder if you want more flexibility in output formats. Essentially, Avisynth reads it in and processes it, and sends it to Virtualdub, which is your editing interface, and Virtualdub can either save it as .avi or send it to the external encoder to be saved in any desired format. I think I used mencoder sometimes for the last bit, but there are a few good free alternatives. It's a surprisingly good, flexible, and powerful arrangement if you don't mind figuring out how to get it working.
Pirate Sony Vegas

Light works btfo of every free software on pc. I can't speak to apple but as long as you don't want 1080p it's amazing and so much better than everything else. It's pro software but it's free for commercial use, up to 720p. 1080p is actually a pretty reasonably priced upgrade too.

This. You literally just have to replace 1 file (amtlib.dll)

Shotcut is free.
I recommend pirating. Sony Vegas was overly pirated so there are lots of guides and tutorials for using it.
