Honestly? It was Zak Penns story and the storyboard artists work that made that such a good movie. People were working on Avengers back in 2008 when it may have been the 3rd or 4th movie marvel made. It Instead became their 6th movie which gave them more time to work out elements of it. It went through many draft changes and so on and wasn't Whedons baby. AoU was all Whedon, so no, we don't give him sole credit. Most really good movies have multiple people at the helm for story, there's no shame in it. Yet egos can get in the way.

Directors don't just fucking decide what they feel like shooting, there's a whole process with multiple people that decide. Snyder HAD the right to shoot the additional scenes (that were decided upon by the various powers that be) but since he opted not to do that the studio brought in Whedon to shoot what THEY (not Snyder) wanted them to be.
