If hardback floppies (I know it's practically an oximoron) became a normal thing, would you switch to it over trades and regular floppies?
Cause I think I would as long as the price wasn't $2+ more than paperback floppies.

Does the Seven Soldiers put the issues in the order they were released (like the rec reading order is) or does it put them in different order than that.

Also whats that fatass MONSTERS book about? I need more monster comics in my life.
>>
>>94692059
Most of these posts are about comics and book trades.
There are some about toys or statues or figurines but they're few and far between.
If ya REALLY cared about it, why not post the links or places you use so others can see it. If it gets enough feedback and shows up frequently enough then the OP copypasta will likely add it.
>>
>>94692263
>hardcover floppies
they cost a lot more to produce so you'd have to charge at least twice as much. And it makes no sense for a 26 page book, they will just take up so much space. I think some people in this thread are silly for buying hardcovers for 50 page books. But I think 50 pages is the minimum for a hardcover. I may be wrong but I think I heard there is a minimum page count for hardcovers for the binding to work properly

I'm already a few issues in. It's addicting and surprisingly a light/easy read for its reputation. I don't know why the fuck I didn't start it earlier

>>94692312
The SS hardcovers are in release order. I don't know about the trades but supposedly they're the same material just in 2 trades and not hardcovers.

My Favorite Thing is Monsters is a huge indie critical darling. It's about a young girl solving a murder mystery in 1960s chicago and she's obsessed with monsters and draws them all over her diary. It's supposed to be amazing (haven't read it yet) but if you wanted something for actual monsters I'd recommend Manifest Destiny and Kaijumax
>>
>>94692389
Oh well I guess I should upload them on my pc and then post in this thread, or I could just post them from my phone anyways and you can shut your queer mouth, lel

This is part new purchase, part crafts I guess. A while back I realized that I need a new separate box just for my Lady Death singles, so I figured I might as well decorate the box a bit for one of my favourite characters ever.

I scanned in one of the covers, isolated the logo, rearranged it a bit, printed it out, cut out the stencil, traced it on the lid lightly in pencil. I just added the marker today and I'm debating whether or not to fill in the lettering with black or not. What do you think?

What's everyone reading now?

Working through my backlog currently. Just finished the first Lackadaisy book, and now I can't decide what print to buy when I get the second book. I like the notes in the back even if most of them were a little obvious and unneeded if you're even the slightest bit familiar with history. I'm also trying very hard to control my autism here, but I'm a bit triggered that there was no mention that the weaver stance that Freckle used was actually invented in the '50s when she did mention the duesenberg

There is a middle ground you know... I've got my floppies in boxes, because organization is good, but they're accessible to flip through to find what you need.

I never fill them all the way up you need room to flip through and browse. Also on deep shelving they're easy to just slide in on the bottom shelf all tucked in.
>>
>>94698778
That's a hot cover
>>
>>94696579

It looks great as is, but if you're going to do anything, don't fill it in, just embolden the lines on the inside by however many degrees you think is best

Looks great though, I look forward to doing more crafty shit with my comics, opportunity doesn't present itself that often though.

Kamandi Challenge

Ragnarok

Black Science
Kill or be Killed (I just stopped trying to read this one month to month cuz i kept forgetting shit so I'll be reading it in large chunks)

Animal Man is the best starting point, then flip a coin. If it's heads, read the Invisibles and then The Filth and puzzle out the relationship between them. If it's tails, start JLA and then to the Bat Epic.
If it ends up on the side, settle in for Doom Patrol, then read Flex Mentallo and Way's Doom Patrol ongoing.
If the fucker disappears, go get a copy of Supergods.

I went to a little local comic con, it was basically a dealers room that you paid $5 to get into.
I picked up Flash #163, 4.0 grade for $10, Prez #1 and #3(the good issues) for $3 each, and Batman #666 for $5.
Also got American Flagg at my local flea market for a dollar, still haven't cracked it open.

And to celebrate a milestone into adulthood and setting up a bank account, I bought Watchmen from Hamiltonbooks. Hardcover for like, $6. Fucking love that place, even if their packaging is one step up from ghetto as fuck.

Also got my mom three of the four sets of Tim Burton's Tragic Toys for Girls and Boys.
Need to track down the last one.

used books aren't packaged/sent by amazon, the market place is other sellers using amazon as a centralized platform to sell their stuff and amazon gets a cut. their packaging depends entirely on the seller, it may be that they literally send it in an envelope with no padding at all (which regularly happens to me with used novels) but they may also be well packaged.

I've been donating a lot of old trades and novels I don't reread as often to the local library lately. Yesterday, while dropping off a box, they informed me that anything that can't use would be put out on a freebie cart for patrons to keep and suggested I take a look since I've given them so many things lately. I'd never noticed it before, so I checked it out and found the first volumes of Saga, Fatale, and Manhattan Projects. I brought all three home, but Fatale looks most interesting to me at a glance. Noir, horror, mystery, gorgeous art, and Brubaker hit a lot of sweet spots for me.

Also, not /co/-related, but I got Arrow's new Blu-Ray release of Re-Animator, the Criterion DVD release of The Blob, and pre-ordered the Phantasm DVD collection in preparation for the next couple of months.

Looks like KALLAX from IKEA.
They also offer boxes there that exactly fit into those shelves. If you're American and your next IKEA is hundreds of miles away then get that pick-up truck from your friend and make it a road-trip. Cheaper than ordering it online, they take hefty fees. Keep in mind though that KALLAX doesn't have any kind of back wall.
Alternatively take a look at BILLY ir FINNBY. BILLY looks good and massive and is very sturdy while FINNBY is really cheap and still very sturdy, I own all3 of them and they are really awesome. FINNBY might give you problems with big books though since the shelves aren't that deep.

All the classic Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes, Doll House, Game of You, all that shit. About ten books, there a lot of different collections.

A lot of the characters pop up in other Vertigo titles, but if Hellblazer is on your to-do list get it done before starting on Books of Magic.

Its a really good set for first time comic readers too though, I wouldn't mind picking up a set for the visual display as well as to use as loaners for friends.

It's a licensing issue I guess. Eaglemoss has the license only for certain countries. Similarly it's pretty much impossible to get any Easton Press books in Europe.

Slightly off topic, but anyone know if Gloomcookie's available to read online anywhere? I want to read the first couple issues before I decide if I want to drop the money on the full series. I have the first volume in the mail, but it won't arrive until the auction i"m looking at is over.

The readonline place I got to didn't have it.
I'd say go to winothread and check their pastebin link that's full of 1000s of comics.
If not there, nor on any torrent place like Piratebay, use winothread to ask if anyone has scans.

It's always best to exhaust your options before requesting there. Respectable showing of attempted search is always appreciated.

It's basically a dark story of sexual obsession whereby an artist falls in love with this homely-looking girl (who's quite possibly a schoolgirl)...fairly sexually transgressive, lazy metaphor but the art is pretty Crumb-like, unfortunately Cooper doesn't make comics anymore, he's a high-falutin' "fine artist" (still paints in the same style as his comics, though). He did that (failed) Pig Goat Banana Chicken cartoon with Johnny Ryan which bombed, he's fucking wicked, I have all his comics apart from his art books.

You buying? That's a good price if you ask me. SOOOO many GREAT Jonathan Bennet comics in those early issues, another criminally under-rated cartoonist.
I'm really hyped for "The New MOME", NOW, featuring lots of creators from MOME plus some established guys like Harkham etc...it's another pet project of Eric Reynolds so should be dope.

Yeah, Breakdown Press do the Safari Comics festival (LITERALLY the most hipster-fied comics fest I've ever been to--not pretentious hipsters, just cool comix-type hipsters) which was last Saturday, I checked out Berserker and some other stuff, Lando and them guys were the there, British Weapon Comics (Leon Sadler's lot, urgh I fucking hate that guy's "art") ans like I mentioned before got sketches off Anya Davidson, Matthew Thurber, Will Sweeney and Tom Whatsisname, guy who does Windowpane. Got some Antoine Cosse stuff too. Reminds me I should take photos, just bunged 'em in the longboxes once I'd read them.
Fucking score on the MOME's btw, you're in for a treat, especially the last 10 or 11 issues, nary a bad story at all.

Some /m/a/d goodness with Ultraman. Only nitpick is that they don't grow giant-sized, but the art is bretty gud.

I've read the first book, Circle of Blood, Dreams, Scarab and a little bit off Images. Kabuki is one of the most layered comics ever written, and it's extremely intimate. What I've read easily ranks it as my favorite comicbook. I was hesitant cause I found out some of the art is skewed to fit the larger size. But from what I've read perfect circles are only a very key thing in Circle of Blood, and I already own the origional of that so that doesn't matter, I'll just own it in two formats

Just look at how many Identity Crisis or Civil War you'll see and notice that more anons have bought that than Ostrander Suicide Squad despite years of constant bitching about DC not collecting it. Picked ups this week.
The writer and artist for Rockstars were there. Both pretty nice people willing and eager to sign everything (already own the first trade but got #1 again for decoration).
I brought up I liked The Tripper, which Joe Harris had done the screenplay for. He was surprised and happy to see a fan of it.

>>94762751
>objectively better

This term means jack shit for entertainment. Sure, you can separate good from bad and great from abysmal, but what people think is the best is firmly down to their own tastes. For instance I think Saga is bland and uninspired, but there are tons out there who love it. While I may dislike it for these reasons others enjoy it because stuff like character interactions really speak to them. We both have a stance that is fully justified in our own minds, but seems obviously wrong to the other. Hence objectivity is impossible.

I get I may sound overly agressive on this, but I have a real issue with exalting a singular work over another because I feel it needlessly limits the medium.
>>
>>94764569
>singular work over another because I feel it needlessly limits the medium.

Sort of. Novels and poetry have been ideologically about singular works for a while. When was the last time a franchise of novels was taken seriously? GMes of thrones doesn't count cause it is shit and snyone in the arts will agree.

Terry Pratchett was knighted for Discworld. Agatha Christie's Poirot novels are still hailed as some of the best mysteries despite the decades long TV show adaptation. HP Lovecraft had fanfiction writers adding to his canon during his own lifetime. 2001 is still hailed as one of the best hard sci-fi books and it was written concurrently with a screenplay adaptation for it.

I don't think I really understand what you mean and what your point is.

nah, it's cause it's a complete reversal on the trope. Pratchett went half way, which, don't get me wrong, it brilliant. Gaiman took the other step, he didn't just make the character a comedic character but made it one that wanted everyone to enjoy life

Obviously. did you see that short film about Chicago with Ware eating dinner with his family, taking his kid to school and best of all, showing him at work in his beautiful, dark-wood panelled studio? Close-up of him inking and everything? Showed him working on Rusty brown pages, fucking 2' x 3' originals with the most recent pages hung up around his work space so he can see the development? it was a process fan's jizzdream. Kind of agree, I think comics are pretty redundant in terms of telling cape stories now when CGI is so good. Golden to Bronze age stuff will always have an undeniable charm but modern capeshit is completely creatively redundant, the Bats/Watchmen crossover is definitive proof of this, it's a fucking joke, most contemporary mainstream creators haven't got an original thought in their tiny minds

Besides, Gaiman's not a cartoonist so I dunno why we're relly discussing this, he comes from the factory system, Ware...doesn't. Look at all he's achieved with 18 issues of ACME, Building Stories and Jimmy Corrigan. Sorry, as a consumate artist Gaiman does not hold a fucking candle to Chris Ware. He formally changed comics not one, not two but THREE fucking times and is set to do it again with rusty brown. Gaiman's just a hacky fucking goth-boy scribe.

>Golden to Bronze age stuff will always have an undeniable charm but modern capeshit is completely creatively redundant
you missed the entire point of my post, which, I admit, was not formulated well. My bad. No story is great cause it has never been told before. It is the way of telling that tell the story, the perspective and the artistry. It's cool to hate on Tom King these days cause Batmanfags just can't handle it (but really, he's not good on that book). But you look at Omega Men, Vision and now Mister Miracle he is showing how you can tell an old tale in a new and interesting way (I have not read Sheriff of Babylon yet).

>did you miss the fact that these are all awards for WRITING?!

Nope, he is one of the few cross platform authors that can write in every medium. But if you want to compare a visionary for art and writing ability you should point at Dave McKean. And I'm sorry, no one compares on that level

McKean's good but, again, he's an artist and not really a cartoonist. A GREAT artist nonetheless. I've been reading comics since 1982, I saw McKean break into the industry in real time, guy could only draw covers for so long, as a storyteller he fucking sucks. Although I do love his more recent, loose, brushy inking style. But digital lettering, blergh. I'm not a Ware stan but it it undeniable that he has changed the medium several times and if you'd deny that, well, you don't know really know the formal evolution of comics, or (maybe) just don't understand his innovations. He's influenced like three generations of cartoonists, like it or not. Gaiman just repackages fuckin historical mythology. End of debate.

>>94768162

>>
>>94768591

>>94768674
>Introduced complex but not flashy breakdowns
>Broke down "illustration" into a formal shorthand language of iconography
>Reintroduced a distinctly modern "spin" on classic Hearst-type cartooning tropes
>Broke away from the boring white male autobio that was pretty ubiquitous in alt comics circles before Ware really gained traction
>Elevated the design of his comics to literal objet d'art--i'e having each issue of Acme Novelty Library a different size, from smaller than A5 floppy to an almost A3 size hardback and all permutations in between
>Used almost Joycean literary techniques
>Hand lettered EVERYTHING; the Victorian-type patterns and everything, probably one of the very few cartoonists to realise that the lettering is as much a part of the art as the actual drawing is
>Basically involved every step of the way in the production of his comics.
If you weren't around when the first few issues of Acme came out you can never appreciate the utter earth-shattering impact they had on alt comics. Everyone wanted to make their comics "art objects", everyone took great inspiration from his drawing, look at fucking Aesterios polyp and the blatant Ware-homages throughout the book (specifically all the good memories with Hana; it's pure Ware storytelling), Dash Shaw, Kevin Huizenga, Dan Zettwoch, I could go on and on and on.
He'll say himself he's "stolen" from Frank King, Richard Macguire etc but whatever he hs "stolen" he's made it himself--he's pretty much a one-off.
>>94768523
And I know he didn't write Arkham Asylum, YOU'RE the fucking tard, you've never heard "storytelling" applied to how an artist "breaks down" a page into panels?! THAT is storytelling. Wow, you really do not know anything about the medium, do you?!! Now fuck off to your latest Big Two mega-event, I hear they need the money.

Ultraman's a fun read and was easy for an uninitiated newbie like me to get into. I started the original series and started picking up the manga shortly after since it picks up years after the original's story. I've tried to get into a couple of Ultra series prior, but the "let's cram in a dozen series' worth of characters and history into the first couple minutes of the show because it's all tied together" thing is a bit daunting to try to figure out. I'm all for things like Kamen Rider and Sentai having easily explained guest appearances or crossovers, but trying to explain everything in the brief bit before the first episode's OP is nuts. I'm still down for checking out some more Ultraman, but I need to find one that's right for me I think.

SMT is not the case as it had two volumes come out and enough time to "find an audience". Trades of older comics are never advertised properly and the actual fans of the series don't bother telling friends and other people about it because they don't even bother buying them themselves.

It's really not, if people were buying DC wouldn't cancel. It's as simple as that. Some stuff is just cult classic with a small fanbase but other stuff you see people bitching about not being collected and then when they do start collecting it everyone conveniently forgets about said series until the publisher gives up on ti due to low sales and then outrage. The anon earlier is a good example, he's passive aggressive about DC canceling SMT but he didn't even make the effort to buy it.

He's more cross platform than Gaiman, cause while Gaiman writes for multiple mediums McKean writes in multiple arts.

He took a lot of influence from Barron Storey and elevated it. applied it well and made a lot of people notice it. I think Barron Storey was mostly known in the fine arts whereas McKean was know in fine arts and comics

i just ordered Valley yesterday and pre-ordered her koyama book :)
how is hot summer nights tho? i really like fred's art, like a mix of taiyo matsumoto and masaaki yuasa sort of, but the comic seems a bit different

Barron Storey influenced so many comic artists, Paul Chadwick studied underneath him, forgotten who else

Yeah, I mean total respect to the guy, the Paul Nash book and Black Dog (?) were great, like I said his b & w brushwork is a thing of lush beauty.
According to Mike Lake (founder of titan Books and Forbidden Planet) he is a massively arrogant cunt apparently, though.

I really love Jeremy Soreses art style, cutesy but not nauseatingly so.

Well, sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong. But the Academy Awards ARE pretty much a joke by now...
>>94781691
I didn't say they're some miraculous stamp of approval, dude...But the Eisners get it right a lot more than the Oscars, I mean, I'm sure if you ever one one you'd reject it out of moral indignation in protest at the debacle they've become, yeah? They can't be that bad, fucking Sir Alfred #3 got a Best One Shot nom so they're not out of touch, the judges for both organisations are wildly different, comics awards judges generally know their shit in their respective genre fields.

>he is a massively arrogant cunt apparently, though.
doesn't come off that way in his interviews. It's possible, but if that's just one person so I am not going to take that as fact. He seems like a really nice guy in most of his interviews, even the last one I hear on Deconstructing Comics, and they do some sloppy interviews.

Well, Mike Lakeworked with some of he biggest names in comics, visited Spiegleman in NY when he was working on Maus and I've heard tales of him pulling some real Spinal Tap-type diva demands at cons. Still, doesn't effect the art, does it....?

Is he fuck, he's the nicest, most humble dude in comics, maybe he's a bit bitter 'cause of how he was screwed outta Titan and FP but he showed me nothing but encouragement and praise to a kid he'd just met--I've mentioned this before on here buy this was the time in Orbital Comics when he had his own shop-within-a-shop, sold records, old film posters, original 2000ad pages etc, anyway he showed me three McKean sample pages for a James Bond project, done in the style of the novels, y'know where he drove a really old Rolls Royce with like the cylindrical front chassis? Also had a load of Biz sketches (of fucking FAIRIES, of all things!) and Bill Sienkiewicz drawings for a virtual singer in the vein of The Gorillaz--this was development for the oriental/mixed-looking chick from the film The Descent, that project didn't go anywhwre though. I read an interview with McKean where he mentioned he was working on a "huge licensed property that I can't talk about", basically the pages and character sketches were to be submitted to the current Fleming estate (I think they're Flemings cousins, or something) and they were approved , this was like 2009 and nothing since...still, I expect that adapting a 200-plus page novel is no easy task...

Just asking, what makes you say that? Dude was crazily humbled when I thanked him for all the enjoyment Titan Books had given to me--you know they were like the only importer to the UK before the direct market debacle? I still have an old (the oversized Kaz cover ish) RAW that has a Titan sticker on the back...and 2000ad would've been NOWHERE in the US without the Titan Euro-sized reprint albums. THose American QC comics of Toothy characters were fucking awful, terrible colouring and I swear they weren't even shot from the negs, they looked liked they'd been shot from actual issues of 2000ad, they looked so fucking shitty!
