Considering that tons of cartoons/comics have characters that perform athletic feats/fight with tons of acrobatic flair impossible in our world

How do you make a character's fighting technique and abilities stand out? As in making them truly impressive to the audience despite the over saturation of exaggerated combat.
I get that art is important but I'm talking more about the concepts and types of fighting styles.
>>
>>94326053
I don't think fighting ability or technique should be the selling point of your comic. As long as it's "good enough" it will be glossed over. What's the story about, what's the more important feature that you're trying to show

I wish you guys some nice ideas and time to turn them into drawn reality!
>>
>>94326053
Watch actual fights. You'll notice that most of them will end in about 2-3 solid good moves. You don't need to have flairish fighting sequences if you don't want them to, but you just need to make sure your choreography looks good.
>>
>>94326219

>I don't think fighting ability or technique should be the selling point of your comic

It isn't really. I just want to make on of the minor/secondary characters an impressive fighter/to have his skill set be unique. If anything his role in the story is more relegated to 'the dad of one of the (immortal) main characters that died centuries ago'. While I have his personality, relationships, and practically everything in his history down, I also want to make his skills seem cool just as a garnish on top of everything else.

You talk a lot about drawing (obviously), but how's your WRITING in your webcomic?
>do you consider yourself a good writer?

>are you going off the edge of your pants or do you plan everything out?
>do you ever practice your writing? if so, how?
>do you have particular strengths or weaknesses in your writing?
>>

Are you talking like they never meet each other or just never fight?
>>
>>94330488
>do you consider yourself a good writer?
Decent, but not great
>do you use scripts?
Yes but I follow them loosely and make adjustments as I drew
>are you going off the edge of your pants or do you plan everything out?
Mostly planned, with a little writing by the seat of my pants whenever I make last minute changes
>do you ever practice your writing? if so, how?
I write comic scripts and that's about it. If I enjoyed practicing writing as much as I do art I would be making a novel instead of a comic.
>do you have particular strengths or weaknesses in your writing?
People say I'm good with chracterization and dialogue, so I'll take their word for it
>>
>>94330488
>>do you consider yourself a good writer?
Yes
>>do you use scripts?
No
>>are you going off the edge of your pants or do you plan everything out?
Plan everything out from beginning to end
>>do you ever practice your writing? if so, how?
Short stories
>>do you have particular strengths or weaknesses in your writing?
I can't do romantic situations to save my life. They always sound like something out of an anime.
>>
>>94330570
They've met, but never fight. But I think my question has been answered
>>
>>94328610
Are you writing a novel or are you making a comic, faggot?
>>
>>94330488
>do you consider yourself a good writer?
I consider myself to be out of practice in actual prose, but I have always thought of myself as a writer first. To be honest, my approach on more visual mediums is because I think I can make my stories reach more people if they have anything visual on them.

>do you use scripts?
Not much for comics, if anything i write the general idea and then make the composition right in the paper. Probably not the best.

>are you going off the edge of your pants or do you plan everything out?
I usually have everything planned out at least on a general perspective, I make some changes here and there on the go but I stay with my key points.

>do you ever practice your writing? if so, how?
I haven't practiced my actual writing in a year already. I used to use a roleplaying forum with some friends to help myself with my prose and writing, but after I got into an argument with the GM's favorite guy I stopped. Also college happened so that didn't help neither.

>do you have particular strengths or weaknesses in your writing?
Strenghts it seems people really liked my own little worldbuilding and how nothing felt retconned in my rp story, even when I admitted I did a lot of revisions and changes while I was writing. I'm always concerned with continuity, so that helps a lot.

As for weaknesses, I'm too shy to describe romance and lewdness. I have got a better hand on romance if only a bit, but I still can't write smut even if I can picture it in my head.
>>
>>94330835
Can't you tell?
>>
>>94331578
he's right, your comic needs almost no words on that page, we shouldn't have to read dialogue, it defeats the purpose of a comic.
>>
>>94327306
Comic book fonts aren't very readable, IMO. Anyway, you could reshape the bubbles to give the illusion of paragraph breaks, or maybe have text in the bubble drift slowly rightwards or leftwards, it's just hard to read personally.
>>
Has anyone ever thought of what song would be playing during the credits if your comic were adapted into a motion picture?
>>
>>94331864
>comic book fonts aren't very readable
That must really suck for you. I find them to be the most readable, but I know how individual that kind of thing can be
>bubbles with paragraph breaks
This, I wholeheartedly support. In fact actually breaking the text up into chunks makes it much easier to read.
>>
>>94332048
I don't really have a specific song in mind, but I think something hopeful would fit nicely. My endings are usually bittersweet but with hope for a better future coming.
>>
>>94332048
I do. Thought I might be the only one.

>>
>>94332048
Honestly the comic I'm working on is kind of sort of a thinly veiled idea for a television show. I already know what I'd pick for an ED: In the Backseat off Arcade Fire's Funeral. It'd basically just be the MC walking down the road while cars pass by, slowly evolving as the season progresses to jogging, then finally a breakout run on the last episode as we jumpcut to different characters in various locales throughout the season running in the same direction.
>>
>>94327306
Those are some China walls dude, try to at least break it on more balloons
>>
>>94327306
Cut down your dialogue, there's a lot of unnecessary words that lead to walls of text. Either that or break your dialogue up over more panels/pages/bubbles. People read comics for visual storytelling, not just walls of dialogue.

I didn't bother to correct your grammar because it's riddled with errors, but you should cut a lot of the fat from your dialogue and increase the font size. No one likes zooming in and out
>>

>>94333891

I wil never, ever, understand why there are so many spelling issues in webcomics, especially if the art is decent.
You need to invest hours upon hours to draw a comic page, the time needed to spell check or even the time for the complete writing process pale in comparison. Yet it immediately ruins the presentation. It wouldn't be so frustrating if it wasn't so easily fixable.
>>
>>94334668
Well judging by the signature in the corner, English isn't his first language so I think it's a little excusable. But definitely, plenty of people willing to spell check

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Lots of text in comics is perfectly fine, if done right. The notion that there is some kind of golden drawing to text ratio or, in the very least, a very narrow margin of balance is pretty dumb in my opinion. There is a massice spectrum ranging from no writing at all to a grey area where panel structure is abandoned and comics transition into more of an illustrated novel type of deal. All the variations have legitimacy and where a comic falls on the scale says nothing about its quality.

Of course, there are certain established conventions that have proven to work well an can be adapted easily. Arranging lots of text on a comic page favourably requires lots of skill because more text always provides the potential of disruppting the flow. Keeping the flow alive is absolutely crucial and as >>94331864 pointed out, there's some basic guidelines to achieve that. But it can be done with lots of text aswell. Many comic beginners just lack the experience and need to invest a lot more effort into a page or chapter that is text-heavy.
I think an important aspect is to alternate high-text pages with low tex-pages regularly and establish a kind of rythm that supports a steady flow. If this is done correctly, high-text chapters can create a very rich reading experience.
Professional comic artists struggle with these issues as well. If I had to pick an artist who's really made high-text comic appealing and mainstream, I'd say Togashi. Of course, Togashi is a paneling genius so he's got a lot to work with.

Anyways, I just wanted to blow some steam, sorry for the blog post.
>>
>>94335351
I agree with what you say here, the problem is not that it is text-heavy itself, but that the text is all together which makes it look like an awful pasta, which along with the small font size makes it hard to read.

I would have my issues with the page you just posted as well, but at least that one has more breaks and also a bigger line spacing, which the other comic posted here doesn't have and is what makes it hard to read too.
>>

I don't think it's fair to use manga as an example, because the original text had to be translated. I don't know if this is an official translation or not, but even then there will be differences in how it's handled (regarding how well it can be translated, and how they choose to replace the text).
Even with this page, I get the impression that it was made to save drawing or animating time, all this text is a bit of turn-off, especially in panel 7.
>>
>>94336043
panel 3, bubble four: *and when is that going to be?

panel 4: *going to be released from jail / will be released

panel 5: 've can only be used after a pronoun, but that fisrst sentence is a complete mess, needs to be redone from scratch.

Don't see anything else at first glance except maybe some comma issues. It's just overall really clunky. Just read more books in English, preferably some acclaimed stuff, not YA trash, and you'll make it...
>>
Is one really a good writer? Can we really say that's why his comics sell?
>>
>>94335767
It's practically impossible to find an artist over the internet unless you're willing to pay him/her.
If you're still at college or know some artists in your personal life you have a chance.
Definitely don't try in hyw all you're going to do is get "*sent :^)" replies and start stupid artist vs writer arguments.

Personally, I'd recommend you to just find people you know can draw and talk to them irl, eventually you'll find someone who's willing to collaborate if you get lucky. If you're really dedicated, also make a workmap and go to comic conventions and just speak to small time artists directly. Good luck.
>>
>>94336250
>Is one really a good writer?
I'd say so.

>Can we really say that's why his comics sell?
Depends. HIS comics probably sell on their writing, but the manga version of OPM probably gets more sales due to the gorgeous art and/or anime, though.

It's not. I don't have the Viz scans for the recent chapters, they're a lot better. I also own the German tankobons which are excellent and in many ways superior to the American release (usually it's the other way around).

I'm a sucker for Robert A. Heinlein, but I've got the Complete Sherlock Holmes and The Coming of Conan lying around, are those good?
>>
>>94336698
YA stands for Young Adult, you know, Twilight, Hunger Games, books like that. They aren't really good recommendations if you are learning the language because their vocabulary is kind of toned down either because the protagonist is supposed to be on low level (Hunger Games) or because the writer is not that good neither (Twilight).
>>
>>94336621
I'm German, so I have a German email adress. I didn't expect it to be likely to get a reply - but hyw is a relatively civil place for 4chan standards and although creative collaborations on here are infrequent, they're not unheard of. I also feel that the recent 3-page contests have created a nice creative mood so I was willing to give it a shot.
As I said, if you're interested in a collaboration email me, if not, that's fine too.

At least I gave up on the idea working as a pro someday. So I guess it is okay.

Yeah nihongo has to spend a lot more time and words and syllables to say the same info, but english has the capacity to be super extra verbose and it gets richer and more enjoyable the more wordy you get (see popular cartoons currently)

Left, just some text changes. I wanted to remove things that didn't seem necessary to write, and instead reveal later in the story.
Right, is a draft of how I would have spread it over two pages. I really wanted to try showing how WhiteCat was annoyed with their current situation, and didn't really understand why they weren't doing more elaborate schemes when she thinks they are capable of it. While BlackCat is pretty content with how things have been going. In your panel 4, I think it'd be a good idea to blow up the image of the convict, breaks up the dense dialogue.

Also, I'm pretty sure one of them is a fox? Dunno, I haven't been keeping up really.

Let me guess, ColdFusion? Here's the thing, verbosity and wordiness in writing just stretches shit out. It bogs down the pacing, wastes the reader's time, and often muddles the intended meaning of a sentence. Excessive verbosity is the prose equivalent to drawing out a shounen fight scene, it's just boring filler.

I always dream about doing 3 webcomics at the same time, but I can't even keep one with regular updates
>>
>>94339678
Alright let me put it another way:
In MY opinion, the longer you take to just kind of naturalistically chat shit out, the more digression, the more seinfeld-ass shit going on, the more I enjoy dialogue. If it was boring, nobody would do it, because it's a pain in the ass and nobody is under any kind of "stretch this out into more episodes with less money" deadline the way they are in shounen anime.
The more words, the more meaning you get. That is how words work. And that is why Zetsubou Sensei, the monogatari shit, Rick and Morty, that one doctor who episode where they're all just trapped in a shuttle, and a whole ton of other things are so fun.

Obviously you still can't in a comic, as I said, unfortunately, because you have a limit on room and a big wall of text is difficult to chew through.. but if you have the time to break it up into a ton of interesting panels of people talking? Shit, pages can go by with nothing but talking in a way that expands on what could be just a couple sentences.

photoshop's shape tools are definitely confusing, you have to usually make a shape, then 'contract' by so much, if you want to make a lineart shape. The text is simple but it's annoying. And overall it can be hard to tell whether you have settings like anti-aliasing on or not

I use photoshop on a daily basis because memes don't get edited themselves of my job and since I already got it I use it for my artistic works as well. I'm not sure why you have so many problems with the shape tool, you can edit the settings for it to only have the stroke and if you want a specific size for it too.

Although to be honest I use the CC version of the software and it has been years since I used the older versions, but even if you have those it should be similar.

As for the text having anti-aliasing, check for pic related on the text settings. As long as it doesn't say something like "none", your text has antialiasing already.

The general premise is
A budding Demigod is being trained in the form of torment and turmoil by a similar demigod that wants to recreate The K.Kroell in his own image.
The two fight for universal inheritance ad to be the next King Kroell (The K.Kroell's god)
Kroeder (the main character) Must fight and awaken his godly strength and cunning to keep the planet he's born to inherit safe, and keep the people believing in their world's gods.

How did you guys decide on the art style you would use for your comic? I never went to art school, so I've mostly been using various how to draw manga books to learn how to draw, but I'm taking some online courses and watching videos on how to draw anatomy and gestures to hopefully get away from drawing anime style things. Wanted to do something simple like newspaper comics, since it was possible to do a lot of quick, consistent gags at that level. Also was inspired by sprite comics, which have about the same detail level, so there's some synergy there. Also the Earthbound models.
The biggest deciding factor though was "if MegaTokyo can do a comic in pencil without cleaning it up, so can I"
Yeah.. no. But the bar was set low as fuck in 2002.

I think one of your biggest flaws isn't the art but the writing and you in general. You're the person that needs an editor not just for your work but for every single bit of interaction you have with people online and in real life.

There's a reason why you're lumped in with the other three horsemen of the apocalypse.

I see you spinning your wheels and wonder "why doesn't he have some kind of a following" and then you say something so bad I have to look away.

And then I really look at your work and that level of weirdness (not in a good way) seeps into your panels and dialogue. You really would benefit from having a writer to at least lift up your art.

after networking with a couple editors at SD Comic Con and talking to fellow artists about my portfolio I am certain that I need to grind a couple areas to elevate my work more. I got really good feedback and there will be future conversation.

so far i'm happy that there is confirmed interest in the concept of Kinematic but I need to polish and complete a first draft to turn in for formal review. I know a lot of people have been asking already... I feel ready now tho.

while I am working on that I'll be in making my proportions more unique so that it stands out more, also I'll be working in studying more fashion as I was told that my work best fits a young female audience which is fine by me.

welp, I'll be busy.

The speech balloons in P2 are in the wrong place for that conversation to flow; standing rabbit's dialogue should be on the other side of his head, inbetween book rabbit's first and second balloons.

Standing rabbit filling the entire height of the panel is acting as a panel border/divider, so you read the whole of book rabbit's dialogue first, before you notice what standing rabbit is saying. Move SR to the right, and his speechballoon to the other side (and up a bit).

Study how the vector shape and line tools work in Photoshop. You can make a decent speechballoon shape using four control points and adjusting the handles.

Alternatively, if manually drawing your balloons, try a very broad brush drawing straight lines (hold down shift).

Dialogue text should be centre-aligned (not left-justified), and arranged into a block or oval with appropriate use of line breaks.

Using Togashi as an example is really bad.
The only reason people bother with his walls of text is because of the trust he has built with his readers over hundreds of chapters that his writing/work will be top quality.
This isn't anything you can expect random webcomic to pull off, especially at the start.
>>
>>94348435
Very nice pose and angle, but the proportions are still skidding around like water drops in a hot pan here. Just a bit. Remember the elbows go down to the bottom of the ribcage, and always doublecheck your leg portion ratio. Right now your thighs are about twice as long as your shins. Gotta bring those knees up, especially the far one seeing as the heels are that far apart. You'll wanna raise the far hip up too just so it's all in agreement.

How do you feel about having your target audience being aimed at kids and or adults /co/?

What would you differently to yor comic to fit the targt audience?
>>
>>94356076
Personally, I think anyone who gives any mind to that is a ponce. The idiocy of incompetent executive thinking has no place in independent production. You make what you want to make, and you get the audience you get. Catering and pandering are self-defeating.
And, more than anything, anyone who thinks kids and adults need separate entertainment has probably never been either one.

So I've been lazily mulling it over since 2010, and the gist of it is this:
Gibson Island is in the Pacific Northwest, in the Canadian Gulf Islands, just North of
Washington State. In the 1910s & 1920s, the town became a popular spot for wealthy investors in lumber and coal, and became a boom-town. When the depression hit, the city was abandoned in a matter of a few short years with only a handful of families staying behind. The northern 3/4 of the island, largely urban and heavily developed remained uninhabited for most of a century. The remaining residents all huddle together in suburban neighbourhoods along the southern shore.

Rosemary "Boss" Roswell grew up on the island, her grandparents settling there after WWII.
>>
>>94355116
>Goblins: life through their BUTTS
>>
>>94356168
Theres some differences. Kid stories obviously have less cursing and sometimes death is more vague. I was more curious what people would do if they couldn't explicitly have a character die, how would they get around that.

Personally I worry that I draw women too sexy for kids or that my world view might be too cynical. Though I know theres cartoons that have those elements.
>>
>>94356460
I'd be curious to know what makes you think any of those things don't belong in things for kids; why you would ever worry about that.
>>
>>94356407
Roswell and a quartet of hangers-on spend weekends and nights sneaking across the bridge between their neighbourhood and the 'old town' to explore the old buildings.
Roswell's father has been missing for a year, having left behind financial provisions, a gun cabinet, and a handful of cryptic letters.
The sudden influx of workers and upper-class citizens from across Europe during the town's heyday has left behind an eclectic assortment of relics, texts, and occult paraphernalia from a mosaic cultural background. Roswell is convinced that some non-human intelligence is responsible for her father's disappearance, and is using the "urban spelunking club" as both cover and backup while she digs through the old town in search of any leverage or bargaining chip she can use to reassemble her family.
>>
>>94356407
This is a really interesting idea. My grampa lived up there in Washington during the depression. His navy dad was stationed there but the designated military housing was full, so they just had to go nail together some sheet metal and live in a shack for a while... and they went out to the shore and ate mussels and whatever they could dig out of the ocean. Sounds like a really interesting time n' place.
>>
>>94356548
I think I'm more worried about parents shutting me down than kids themselves disliking it.
>>
>>94355325
No I actually meant way more water than land. The idea started as a pirate story and all nations were a bunch of islands in a huge ocean. Kinda as if all continents were Oceania instead of big masses like Eurasia.
>>
>>94356970
They don't do that with webcomics. The only reason they can do it with TV is they have advertisers who listen to every little thing. Comics advertisers don't care as long as it's not flat-out porn, and even then there are ads for porn. If your comic isn't ad-supported, it's extra irrelevant.
Now there are exceptions, if you're big enough to get the big advertisers (and big enough to need it to afford your site) they will bust you down for a single nipple. Still, that's it. Nobody cares about swears or stabs.

the only downside to tracing is a personal one, no one cares if you trace, at the end of the day the only time someone will notice you trace is when they ask you to draw on the spot
this of course if you take your own pictures to trace from tho
>>
>>94360018
Yep, and if you do it enough, you start remembering them.
It's like how just reading the answers helps you remember shit for the test. It's extremely narrow and only helps on that exact, specific test, but that's still more than nothing. Plus, just getting it right once and comparing to how you do it on your own lets you see what you're doing wrong (like not seeing foreshortening)
>>
>>94360116
If we're fair, everyone traces mechanical stuff. Disney has been doing it since at least Cruella's car. That's what makes shit like Gundam so impressive, when you actually can draw mechanical stuff by hand and keep it consistent.

I'm finishing the third chapter of my webcomic this week, very excited as it's such a long term project for me and I invest a lot of time in doing it (on top of a full-time job). I'm really psyched to finish it because it's an achievement and I can see myself improving with each chapter. However I'm finding it nigh on impossible to get any serious traffic to the updates. If I'm lucky I get 200 views per update - at least 20 of those are me at work checking the script for inconsistencies as I write the next bits.

I know it's super hard for sincere, story based webcomics to make an impact in the same way that gag-a-week strips do. But are there any good forums or places to share my work that isn't here or Tapas? I tried Twitter and Tumblr, but I frankly don't have the time to engage with those platforms enough to get any sort of following.

You have some sites there like Top Web Comics, The Belfry WebComics Index, Piperka and The Webcomic List. Reddit if you aren't a fuck off reddit guy.

It also helps if you are active in the sense of you updating fanart and stuff like that in your own social media. It will draw atention to your webcomic eventually.

A japanese guy writes a shitty light novel to make fun of them but his girlfriend and otaku schoolmates love it unironically and he keeps writing for money, getting feedback from friends and editors that water down his ideas and make it more cliche and trash. He starts to lose faith in art as he is picked by BRAND Pictures (mispronounced as BLAND) to get an anime.

It's too weeb so I don't have the guts to write it but I'm so in love with the idea.

This is actually a bomb ass idea.
If it's too weeby then americanify it.
Instead of a japanese light novel... an american young adult series series.
And have it picked up by some movie company.

So I've been contemplating changing the format of this comic. I'll still stick with the storyboard-style method since this is meant to be "animated", but I'm thinking of changing the delivery method to be able to fit on a standard 8 1/2 x 11 page and make it more "comic book-friendly".
On top of this, I'd really like to up the quality of the art. Add color, do some shading, something to make it more eye-catching because I suspect that one of the things holding this comic back is the art.
As I've said before, I'd rather have good story over good art, but I'd like for this to look better to help it be more competitive on the market.
That being said, I'd have to drastically cut back the quantity of panels from 12-16 a week to about 6 a week. I'm worried that this'll turn people off from the work, but if Ava's Demon can get away with one bloody panel an update, the masses might find it in their heart to forgive me.
What do you guys think? More story or better art?

Turns out the post-apocalypse isn't that bad. Yeah modern society collapsed but most modern conveniences still exist in the form of isolated city states. Each province is ruled by their own king/congress/mayor/tyrant/whatever who rules their people as they see fit, as far as they can enforce it. Superpowers have been activated in about 40% of the populace, though most powers are near-worthless on their own. As raving bands of barbarians roam the lands, heroes are chosen as protectors of their cities, stopping crime, kicking ass, and basically being generally awesome. And, as heroes exist, so do villains, working within and outside of the cities to make ends meet by any means necessary. Over the years heroes and villains have formed a somewhat mutal relationship with each other, creating codes of honors and rules that turn a lot of hero-villain interactions into more wrestling spectacle than actual dangerous scenarios.

Anyways, our story starts with one of these aspiring rookie supervillains, Lady Luck, who's ability is, wouldn't you know it, the ability to control probability. She's just started her own team of superpowered evildooers to try and make it into the big leagues, but things aren't going well. She is quickly recruited by the mysterious Mr. Y, a strange man, both civilized and strangely beastlike in his occasional bursts of savagery. Between working shifts in her alter ego and making villain plots, she helps Mr. Y collect ingredients for his plans.

Over time LL gets a name for herself in the city, even exploring to other nearby cities on errands for Mr. Y. The team gradually disbands as LL gets dangerously close to Mr. Y, who seems nearing the end of his experiment. The two go out on a quest, batting dangerous and mysterious foes in an attempt to unlock the hidden potential within superhumans.

the one that i am aware of is a side-story from his existing comic, and is hosted on Slipshine
>>
>>94370287
All of this happens in roughly the first 6 or so "episodes", sort of being a somewhat serialized shonen with very slow escalation. This radically changes when Mr. Y finishes his project, unlocking his ability to steal the powers of other metahumans in the form of "memory cards", becoming the dangerously powerful "Yardermesh". He begins his plans of reaching ultimate power, which LL and her friends must try and prevent.

They fail, naturally, and Mr. Y absorbs the powers of the city's most powerful hero, its ruler and protector. Now ridiculously more powerful than basically everyone else in a 50 mile radius, he easily sweeps the floor with our protagonists, killing most of them. He sets off on a quest to defeat the most powerful rulers and fighters in the land, absorbing their powers and becoming stronger in turn (his progress is often curbed by limitations on his absorbing, namely the limited amount of "slots" that forces him to pick and choose which powers he can absorb at any given moment).

Meanwhile, LL and the surviving characters set off on their own quest, on the surface to discover the means to destroy Mr. Y, but later more importantly becoming LL's personal quest to gain enough power to put an end to the monster she created.

The plot from there goes on in very typical fashion with two different plots. The first being LL and her band going to different cities, kicking ass, making alliances, and getting gradually more powerful. Meanwhile, Mr. Y strives for "Muh Ultimate Power", stomping some heroes but also getting stomped by many of the most powerful figures in the setting. A lot of the story revolves around Mr. Y's attempts to stay hidden for long enough to get strong enough to take down the big dogs.

I had a rough episode guide that'd go along 48 episodes, which would take give or take 5 straight years to go through. It'd start out very street tier wrestling while by the end going off into classical gods with blows that vaporize states.

Oh I see. Yeah I understand your point. I was lucky enough to have really good English teachers back in my school years (one made his whole class about teaching us as much proper grammar as the semester let him, thanks to him I learnt some key differences like English not using as many commas as we did in Spanish) and even so I know my English is not perfect, so if I can get help on it I take it -some anons here have made corrections for me on a couple of sketches I did for my SOON™ webcomic, I'm grateful to them-.

I always find myself lurking when I'm exhausted, depressed, and inebriated on sleep medication.

>Do you consider yourself a good writer?
Passable at best. Better at structural organization and conversational dialogue for plays, as spacing/pacing in comics lacks that organic development and a lot gets hacked away.

>do you use scripts?
Yeah. Read a few books, there's no specific only for comics type of format, so I mostly just use what I'm good with. Some may think it is too TV, but fuck it.

>Plan/Spontaneous?
Planned arcs and episode tones/purposes, but most everything is spontaneous and go-with-the-flow writing.

>Do you practice?
I write short stories, game design stuff, and read four books a week. Mostly short story collections. Helps keep things fresh.

>Strengths/Weaknesses?
I find myself constantly stuck writing corruption narratives and borderline TF fetish body horror stuff. Apparently I write break-ups really well, and people like how I write the kids + Craig, so I'll take it. But I've got a lot of issues with my own writing, beyond the valid stuff people will throw my way.

Shit's gotten real CW as of late, which is a shame because it isn't classic CW. It is the new stuff. Next script is better, because it was written at a better time and features better use of the cast. Jam, Sammy, and Chel go to an anime convention; Jam tries to make Chel a magical sword, ends up making her Soul Edge. It is a slight comedy.

Current issue is too all over the place, and honestly we're just kinda done with this arc, so we're folding as much closure into it as possible so next arc can just be about violence, developing Jam's talent further, and Liam beginning to enter the picture now that Erin's literally destroyed every safety net she had against him.

>>94355199
I'll get in touch. Been wanting to talk about my issues with your work for a bit. Because I did finish reading it.
>>
>>94370774
Art skills mainly. It's very shoneny, I feel like written format would kill it. In any case, I have an entirely separate concept that I actually am working on with scripts and shit.

Actually now that I think about it I have like 3 or 4 ridiculously ambitious story concepts. Right now it's mainly just writing down ideas and tweaking the finer points with most, only one of them is actually going to be a real thing anytime soon (probably within the space of a year in the form of a webcomic).

I mean I planned Mr. Y to sort of look like a grizzled rugged handsome type dude who looks in his early 40's, while LL is more the fresh out of college wide eyed optimism type. So if you like that, I guess. I did have an actual pseudo-love interest for LL in the form of a guy roughly college aged who is basically Buu Saga Mystic Gohan, complete with arrogant boasting and chronic choking.
>>
>>94330488
>do you consider yourself a good writer?
Not that I've made enough to show it, but I think I could consider myself sorta okay. Though I do know I have a lot to improve on and I hope I do.

>do you use scripts?
Yeah. But I don't follow them to the letter. Somethings just change a bit with the flow.

>are you going off the edge of your pants or do you plan everything out?
Planned. There's a structure to my stories and I like to have things connect back to each other. I'm afraid if I play it loose, I might forget something important or make a plot hole.

>do you ever practice your writing? if so, how?
I write. Take my Merchant & Pike comic see >>94371259 That was originally written out as a short story following Pike's POV during the first time she meets Merchant and fights the beast that trapped them both in the dungeon.

>do you have particular strengths or weaknesses in your writing?
I think I'm not subtle enough. A little too on the nose I guess. My dialogue could do work as well. I could do some work making it more natural. As for strengths... I don't know.
>>
>>94371358
>CW
oh man, now that you say that, I see it. It's okay, it kind of works. I love how Jam completely dismissed any expectation the reader might have had about using some kind of tact with her dad on the phone. That was a total "tony stark just says fuckit and reveals he's iron man at the end" moment that sets the comic apart.
>finished

I usually try to do my sketches as final product as possible, just doing some changes if I see I messed up with sizes or something like that.
Is just I don't really like my inking phase, since I sketch on paper and then do everything else digital.

Even if I try to mimic by "sketchy" style with brushes I don't manage to match it, which frustrates me to no end because it doesn't look neither good nor clean.

Pic here is an example of how usually my sketches come out. Technically this panel should be easier to ink but I just know I will take years for it.

Maybe you need to lay your tablet down flat. It shouldn't be a big difference. Are you pressing your actual hand on the tablet as you go? If not, and if that's how you draw on paper, then give it a go. Chances are you just need more tablet practice. It's a long learning curve, at least it was for me and a few other people I've talked to.
>>94373159
Ahh so you're having digital trouble too. can we see an example of your digital inks? Ideally that same car. Might be some useful tips to give you. I can almost guarantee it.

One can see the care you put in.
Right now I'm mostly telling them apart by clothes, though there are slight differences (she has a bigger cranium (most of the time))
Giving them identical facial stains was not the best idea, and both wearing collars and short sleeves and buttons, but I haven't had any serious trouble yet.

An example of my digital ink with the same car, although I must say it is not the whole car because really I'm too slow on this.
I think my problem mostly is that I like to do single strokes, but on digital I end up "breaking" them when going for curves and the like.

welp forgot to tone down the original sketch, in case that one wasn't really clear
>>
>>94373268
Well I'm glad you've already figured out your most prominent issue, because I always feel bad breaking that one to people. It's hard to urge someone to do sweeping strokes when it feels so right to be careful and slow. You'll work on it, yeah?
The other big one is pressure sensitivity. I did fixed-line-widths forever, thinking they looked nice and neat, but really even the neatest-looking art, if you look closely, has differing line widths all over the place. Even if you don't do a lot of gradual tapering, it's really a good idea to turn it on and get to know it intimately. and if you tell me you're using a mouse I'm going to cry and hug you because I digital-inked with a mouse for something like 7 years and I know the pain of how shitty it is
>>
>>94373305
>mouse
Oh dear no, that was actually a friend's case. But he was a damn pro with the mouse so it was only depressive on my end.

I actually use a tablet, which is even more frustrating because I have been using it for a while yet I feel like I have not made any good progress on it. And when I try sweeping strokes I end up repeating sometimes for 5 minutes because why it doesn't look like I want to?! So I end up doing a lot of small ones. I'm working on it but it really frustrates me.

As for pressure, I must check on that one because I do have it active but I use all the pressure while stroking mostly because of my already mentioned problems, so it's like it wasn't there.
>>
>>94373253
Thanks.
I wanted them to have a similarly drab looking clothes but, In retrospect you're right I should change up the clothes a bit.

It's always nicer to keep your poses in the clear, so that the silhouette reads better. The arms are too bunched up against the body in this one. Also have more economy with the hatching, it's a bit on the busy side and I'm not a a fan of the thick directional lines for shades. I'd rather have the hatching follow the direction of the forms.

Yeah, that actually doesn't surprise me. Common issue. You definitely don't want to press hard all the time like that, but if you can't help having at least a somewhat heavy hand, then adjust the sensitivity. But really, a heavy hand is a jerky, unsmooth hand.. Take a little time to try lighter strokes. Try it out on your pencils first, I can see heavy graphite there too.. Long ago, humanity discovered magic was real. Shortly after, some unspecified asshole(s) used this knowledge to cause Armageddon.

The planet and life has slowly recovered, but everything's loaded with magic bullshit. The remnants of earth are now flat-ish, the surface is a polluted sandstorm hell and most people live on floating islands. Rich assholes live in pristine cloud communities far above the rabble, inferior brown sand people harvest magic crystal from the earth.

As old texts were re-discovered, society began reforming and Religion was revived and revised to fit the New World. The surface is ruled by a not!Islamic Gaia worshiping monarchy who control the supply of valuable magic crystals. The sky ruled by a not!Christian sun-worshipping military state. Star-worshipping not!Jews are seen as sneaky night people. Vaguely pseudo-Eastern spiritualism is the default for any un-colonized peoples. Science is slowly being reintroduced as commodified crystal-powered magitek bullshit. The ocean is no more, but thanks to plot magic all the sea life is just floating around as if nothing's changed. They might have some wings and feathers slapped on now.

The story focuses on the lives of people on the floating islands. The plot is that a dumb, fat little farmgirl lives on some little shitty rock with her big Mormon-esque family and several rowdy older brothers. Her dad was a privateer captain who used his magic abilities to punch sky pirate ships out of the air and beat the shit out of them for reward money. He's dead now, the family worships him. The girl bullies some kid at Magic Public School enough to trigger a Very Special Episode where be brings in a big metal thunder-gauntlet, and he unlocks her hidden potential as a great and terrifying Sky Puncher and is whisked away to Magic Private Military School to learn to harness her awesome Fight Magic.

I've already got my comic up on some of the things it mentioned, but it's given me some info and it's a big time-saver to know that forum-posting isn't effective at all (though from posting on the Tapas forum I have experience of shouting into the void, especially considering the audience there is mostly kids and BL fans - nothing wrong with enjoying what you enjoy, but my comic is definitely not aimed at that group!).

I'll get my comic up on Belfry as it seems good. So many of these ranking sites look pretty basic, they remind me of RPG Maker fan sites from 2002.

I really really don't like doing fan-art! Mostly because it never comes out as good as I hope and partly because it just feels cynical. Look kids! Batman! Look kids Game of Thrones! I know that that's the game you have to play but... eugh.

I was planning, however, to do some old school Boris Karloff type monster drawings in black and white. Maybe I could just do known comic characters in that style.

Enough wimping out anyway, here's my comic:

I think the difficulty in getting into your comic isn't so much how you wrote it as how you construct your scenes. There are plenty of comics, East and West, that mostly boil down to characters just talking and they're perfectly enjoyable. The thing is that they format themselves in such a way that the audience isn't overwhelmed and can pick up on the pacing and important beats of each page.

Try looking at pages from comics like Sandman and Death Note and study the function and structure of the panel layout and choices in focus. Pay attention to how they introduce ideas and pace themselves.

Sorry you guys felt that way. I think the first chapter isn't that great as I was finding my feet.

I won't argue that it does much to grab at a casual glance as I didn't write it to be a hook (maybe that's my problem!), but I wouldn't say the story is incomprehensible. It's clumsy in parts, but it is my first attempt at a comic!.

I enjoy Sandman, but East of West (if that's what you're referring to instead of and) never really clicked for me, despite enjoying bits of it.

Again, everything was a learning experience, in the first chapter I wasn't even laying out my pages before hand, I was just drawing them as I could. I'll definitely try harder to pace my panels and construct the drama more, and I think I'm already improving.

Time frames are fairly long for me, the first chapter was started in 2013, so I've done a lot since then. Attached is a page from the next "set" which kinda gives an example of my attempts to strip down on how much shit is in the pages.

I'm not being a piss, don't compare that to eow please they both may be about talking but eow grabs you the moment you look at the cover.

It looks to me as an artist that you didn't give much thought to your environments just fyi they're dragon ball tier my brother and your story looks somewhat serious, so I wouldn't go for that look if I were you, Think more on the architecture and over all look of the tech.

This is much better

There is a clear progression and cohesion from frame to frame

>I think the first chapter isn't that great as I was finding my feet.
I read both your first and last update assuming this was the case. It's not just chapter one.

I don't think anyone begrudge you that --structure and writing are some of the hardest things to get right -- but you really do need to study other books and get a better idea of how to engage an audience.

Well at least doing my comic as a learning exercise paid off, if nothing else.

>"Oh, do you mean East of West?"

Anon...

Oh shit. I see now, what he wrote there.

I've been taught not to cap up compass directions as they're not proper nouns, so I assumed he meant the actual comic and typo'd out.

>>94387398
Yeah, maybe the last one is a bit of a mess. I'm not going to make any excuses, but it's good to get this sort of criticism.

Unfortunately I'm not the sort to go back and redo stuff, but I'll try harder going forward.

Any other day I would have take more time to fix the car, but sadly for now I'm actually short of time so I will leave it for the next time I have to draw the cops doing some chasing (probably not soon but eventually). Thanks for the help on all these replies.

Well finally done with the lineart, now I will add some simple colors and the typesetting and be done for now. Meanwhile have some extremely happy cops.

Do you guys pre-plan everything about your side characters?

Im deciding on giving them a vauge goal, a defining character trait and letting them grow "organically"

Make another character say "H-he's fast"

I looked up writing tips about, what, 3 years ago? Just writing very "free-spirited" right now. Its a webcomic so its not the end of the world if it fails and I can always learn from mistakes
>>
>>94388328
I always plan everything about anything. You may never know when some of the guys in one of my backgrounds are going to be important later on or just be a cool guy to have around.
>>
>>94388328
I usually stare at the paper until a comic presents itself , fuck all the planning just give that fucking piece of shit paper a good hard look , just stare at it angerly for a good couple of hours if you have too i mean really just give that paper a mean look like your just super pissed! speaking angrily to your self about the paper ,while doing this may help as well.

I am building the world which my characters will live. This is a concept of the planet, the things around it are moons/objects that grant the persons on the planet powers each with a specific ability. Which looks better the round one or the cube one ?
>>
>>94389349
Round for sure, but if you wanted to go crazy you could make them bipyramids (kinda diamond shapes) or some kind of relatively 'round' geometric shape like a 12-sided die shape
