It's one thing to say their personalities changed, and another to say they were changed to tease a ship.

As for their personalities changing, it's undeniable PB's character went through a transition around seasons 3 to 4. There were signs of her moral ambiguity in season 1/2 episodes like Duke of Nuts and What Have You Done, and The Other Tarts, but they definitely pushed more in this direction in later seasons, in a way that is not entirely consistent with the early portrayal of her character, especially when you take into account she's over 800 years old by this point. In the first two seasons, PB was a fairly minor character who never really got the spotlight, so it was necessary to flesh out those aspects of her personality to give the writers more to work with, and develop her character in interesting ways. They do retain her more silly, goody side though, and I think the inconsistency is somewhat exaggerated.

I see the phrase 'nu-Marcy' tossed around here, but I'm not seeing it. Unlike PB, Marceline's character has been fairly consistent the whole way through, with the notable exception of suddenly not wanting to be a vampire at the start of Stakes. I think the issue stems from 3 reasons:

1) Seeing her in a different context
2) The lack of Finn/Marcy episodes, and
3) The lack of Marceline episodes in general


Marceline's first few appearances portrayed her as more antagonistic, and a prankster. People fell in love with her because of this, but thanks to the writers not giving her much spotlight since season 3, and when they do, usually focusing on different aspects of her character, it's rare that we get to see that side of her anymore. It's definitely still there, and there are episodes in later seasons that show this such as Red Starved, Princess Day, and Stakes.

People also fell in love with the bro-like relationship she had with Finn in the earlier seasons, that sadly, hasn't got much focus in a while. People are quick to blame this on bubbline, but really, Marceline has had bugger all focus outside Stakes in the past 4 seasons or so. For whatever reason, the writers haven't been keen on writing for her character. Hopefully Marcy and Hunson, along with the rest of season 9 does give us some more Finn/Marceline interaction.
