That it should have been a series where she visits different places and we learn about various Pacific Islanders' mythologies in Disney format. With the obligatory episodes like winding up in not-Lilliput, meeting another wayfinder with crew who is pursuing a white whale, being abducted by aliens, etc.

>>93877683
It IS better than Frozen. Shiny is not that great though. It sounds good but when you actually listen to the lyrics and put the song in the context of the movie you can only wonder "why is this here?"
>>
>>93877692
What if she don't consent, bruv?
>>
>>93878022
The answer you might expect wouldn't work. Moana is built af. She could probably crush your head in one hand like a coconut. Everything Moana does is gonna be consensual. For her, at least.
>>
>>93876205
You enjoy it, it was fun, Maui was awesome and Dwayne Johnson did a solid job, the rest of the characters are fine. The only song you can remember after a week is "Shiny," even though "I Am Moana" was probably better, and you're pleased that the chicken was so much less annoying than that tiny shitty snow-golem Olaf in Frozen.

You go back to listening to the Little Mermaid soundtrack and you wish Howard Ashman wasn't dead.

When listening to interviews about the film later you appreciate how Clements and Musker did their research and used it in a fashion that improved the film.
>>
A mediocre film where the acts don't tie together in any meaningful way, shit comes from nowhere with no explanation to justify an action sequence, and zero tension since the only hint of the protagonist actually failing is 25 minutes before the end of the movie and is resolved over the course of a single song.
And you heard all the music before in Frozen.

I disagree. Besides Let It Go, all the songs in frozen were fairly forgettable. Meanwhile every song in Moana is aces and you have all sorts of people having differing opinions with which song was the best because they were all memorable.

Has a nice premises but sadly the story really stumbles around and lots of weird things that feels like should be expanded upon but tends to never be brought up again. Pretty, poorly paced, and poorly-staged. I never felt the weight of the journey. There was no sense of escalation or fatigue, the key moments just sort of popped up without adequate foreshadowing or build-up because they spent 40% of the movie establishing that this is a generic coming of age story.

Just watched it myself. A lot of fun! Great catchy songs, excellent animation, loved the mythology aspect (Hercules is one of my favorite Disney flicks). The only thing that bothered me was Maui's return at the end felt too convenient and not developed enough. When he left I just went "Okay, see you for the final battle." and sure enough, he showed up. I don't hate tropes in an of themselves, but it was a trope that wasn't executed well.

Kinda a typical disney movie. I wanted it to be more Ghibli esque and focused on the mythology rather than a bland 'go here and do this because this' story with a strong independent woman.

Despite what everyone says I can't remember any of the songs from this movie (the exception being you're welcome, but even then I can only remember the refrain). I wish they had music that fit more with the ancient polynesian theme. Like more traditional instruments and incorporating more of the native language. Kinda like some of the songs in Lilo and Stitch (minus the ukele)
>>
>>93903370
Speaking of using more polynesian music the dumbest thing I ever heard about this film is when somebody said they should have used western drums because they would be more recognizable as drums.

Don't waste your time this movie was generic garbage

1. Boring characters. Both of them look disgusting. Moana has mother fucking cankles, while her face looks generic at best.

2. Entire boring plotline on a fucking boat

3. Rehashed backstories. Moana is an Ariel rip off

4. Jokes are flat or they are trying to be meta

5. Songs were mediocre, forgettable, and were mostly just generic modern day pop-songs that sounded like they belonged more on a High School Musical/ Glee soundtrack than in a timeless Disney animated classic.. They were mostly spewing exposition in most cases.

6. The forced chicken and little tattoo guy tried way too hard as typical Disney mascots

7. The cute lovable pig was false advertising, and didn't actually go on the quest as the trailers implied he would

8. That fucking ending, good to know the main hero is responsible for the death of everyone who ever dies, and not only goes scott free, but also gets rewarded

Seriously fuck this movie. A typical production made by black suits and created out of every Disney archetype. Seriously making a main character a woman or black will automatically have critics rate this as 95% on rotten tomatoes. Fucking brainless SJW's.

Its not her its the story. She never gets a REAL chance to shine since her job is just to be a delivery girl.

Moana herself is awesome.
Maui is awesome.
Tamatoa is crazy awesome.
All three of them are completely fucking wasted in the film.

Seriously, nothing actually fucking happens in this shitty flick. It goes: marginally cute intro - nothing happens - nothing happens - good song with Maui - nothing happens - nothing happens - nothing happens in the beautiful and interesting underworld - awesome crab song - nothing happens - nothing happens - nothing happens - some bullshit happens - interesting but somewhat anticlimactic ending. So much wasted potential.

Being quirky and clumsy are not real flaws and they don't make a character interesting.

Also, Moana never does anything wrong. Her "failures" are shit like not being able to sail properly or having self-confidence issues that get resolved in 5 minutes. Even if things don't always go smoothly for her, her actions are 100% justified at all times.

The only non-villain Disney females I can think of who ever did a single thing that was morally questionable are Judy and Megara. There are probably some more obscure examples that I can't think of though.

>>
>>93919427
>Being quirky and clumsy are not real flaws and they don't make a character interesting.

They do to me. Moana regularly thinking she can do something only to get that abruptly shot down and then stubbornly persevere made her quite charming. Often times Disney princesses just get by through luck or Mary Sueisms.
>>
>>93919427
>Also, Moana never does anything wrong.
This is factually incorrect since she is shown to make mistakes within the film.

Weather you think they're "real" or not is irrelevant.

>Her "failures" are shit like not being able to sail properly
Which is a pretty big flaw when going on an ocean adventure.

>having self-confidence issues
Self-realization is something most protagonists go through in some form or another. That's literally the point of the bulk of "hero does the thing" stories.

>that get resolved in 5 minutes
Her issues with sailing get resolved fairly quickly if you're just going by runtime, which is dumb, since her learning is presented through a montage.

>Even if things don't always go smoothly for her
The only thing that goes even remotely smoothly is the fight against the coconut pirates. Every other situation is her getting almost killed, maimed, or blown up by a lava monster.

>her actions are 100% justified at all times.
Yes and no, sometimes her ideas are justified but she goes about them in the dumbest way. Her very first attempt to set off is met with disaster because she just grabs the first shitty raft she sees and goes for it.

She's usually capable, smart, courageous, and is used to things working out for her which in turn leads her to get cocky. She almost drowns because of that in the beginning of the film and almost gets her and Maui killed near the end, showing that although most of the film has focused on Maui working on himself, she still has some aspects of her personality she needs to keep in check.

Moana doesn't feel like a character, she feels like a template.

1.Rebellious person defying the status quo? (Judy, Pocahontas)

2.Bizarrely acrobatic(Rapunzel, Judy Hopps)

3.Doesn't need no man(Judy, Meridia)

4.Becomes a respected figure in a society that does not normally support her kind, no matter how historically inaccurate(Judy Hopps, Meridia, Mulan.

I know that it's important to tell girls that they can do anything, but Disney women are becoming pretty bland and overlapping.
>>
>>93922898
>Rebellious person defying the status quo
Moana HAD to be different or everyone else would die. It wasn't a choice like Judy
>Bizarrely acrobatic
This is actually believable because of her character background, origin
>Doesn't need no man
She literally needed Maui's help for a lot of the movie, he even saved her from death
>Becomes a respected figure in a society that does not normally support her kind
Moana was about to become their next leader. She was if anything, one of their most respected people, even with their knowledge of her being 'different'
>>
>>93922898
>3.Doesn't need no man(Judy, Meridia)

Except she does, she forms a deal with him to help her, and she expresses gratitude when Maui comes back. And any time she does act like she can do this on her own, it's clearly more like a bratty kid thinking they're more capable than they are than some "strong Female character" bullshit.

Anna, Merida, and Punzie felt far more template-y desu.

You know like 95% of Disney films are coming-of-age films. At least 50% revolving around father issues. Might as well call it a Pocahontas rip-off. Not only is it about a girl rebelling against her father, but it's about minorities and their mythology, too.

There are similarites, however Pocahontas wasn't a quest movie, but thank you for bringing to light the main issue with this film which is that we've seen this formula in hundreds of Disney Princess movies at this point.

Their motivation behind going on the quest is irrelevant. Ariel went on a quest for her prince, and Moana went on her quest for her people because in 2016 all Disney princesses are strong independent female characters who don't need no man or romance. Moana follows a predicable, and generic Disney formula which we have all seen hundreds of times in past Disney princess films.

Disney started to fear that Moana was starting to appear way to similar to The Little Mermaid formula, and people would notice so they ended up redesigning the Rooster as an idiot that worked for comic relief, and they decided to leave the pig off the adventure all together to avoid the Flounder/ Sebastian comparisons.

Because Disney is greedy they still decide to use the pig heavily in promo materials because pigs are cute, and people like cute things so they say "let's pretend the pig is still a sidekick, (even though hes not) and sucker more money out of fans who enjoy classic Disney cute sidekick characters.

>the fact that the ocean bails her out constantly makes her feel like even more of a blanks slate

If it makes her anything it wouldn't be so much of a "blank slate as what she really is which is a Marry Sue.

Moana would have failed the first time Maui tried to murder her by throwing her into the ocean, >>93906307

The fact that she was good at almost everything she tried, had an army of disposal magical friends to bail her out of trouble, and came out smelling like a bed or roses makes her a Marry Sue.

Oh on I'm not splitting hairs about that. Moana is a feminst/SJW approved film. To be fair I would say that about any film that has an lead bossy, independent lesbo female character who is maliciously not given a love interest in the film.

The list includes, but is not limited to
1 Moana
2 Elsa
3 Maleficent
4 Rapunzel
5 The Black Frog princes
6 The Brave lesbo princes
7 Judy Hop

Take the film Maleficent for example. They took a timeless, kick ass Self proclaimed Mistress of all evil, and turned her into a misunderstood rape victim. The King is a monster, and the prince can't even wake up the Sleeping Beauty anymore. Only a girl power LGBT kiss can wake up the sleeping beauty.

They turned the King into an irredeemable evil monster that slaps cute little old female fairies in mid air. They even allowed Maleficent to be the bigger person by giving him the chance to stop fighting but of course he was an evil bearded man, and kept trying to kill her. She wasn't even allowed to kill him. He died by his own hand do to not being able to stop being such an evil angry "typical man".
She wasn't even allowed to turn into the large iconic dragon at the end.

>most normal individuals look back as being creepy.
You mean modern day baby boomers / millennials who listen to the hippy long haired sporting garbage boy bands like The Beatles.

>Your argument is pretty flimsy if you think we should go back to doing Disney Princesses like Snow White
I 1000% believe we should go back to those better, and simple times.

As good as Frozen but not as good as Tangled or Zootopia. Better than Big Hero 6.

I don't usually agree with this youtube movie reviewer, but he makes some good point's about Moana. Just skip to 3: 35

Jesus Christ, how are you even lucid? How does an 88 year old even know about 4chan? Stop wishing for 14 year old girls to be sexually active and get off /co/, you creepy old fuck.

>Stop wishing for
Who has to wish when it's been a reality for thousands of years, and they continue to be this way to this very day. Have you ever gone outside or to a mall recently ?

No it's not. she was aggressive, and punched him. Proper princesses should never be that aggressive . She's vulgar, and trashy. You might as well dress a male character in a frizzy wig if the "female" character is going to be as bold as to hit a man. The fact that punching someone is her natural instinct in that or any situation makes it all the worse. Being a Tomboy is in her nature which makes her a little shit.

Why are you shitposting in a thread for a movie you've never seen?

>You go back to listening to the Little Mermaid soundtrack and you wish Howard Ashman wasn't dead.
One of the few comments I can actually agree with in this thread

You really think the people at Disney are going to understand you're protesting against the quality of this movie's story because you bought one form of merch over another?

IDK, I'm me not you.

Eh, she needs to stop shaving them.

My favorite theory is that the Heart is what kept her alive. Also explains why her grandma died the day she gave it away - no more Heart means her age catches up with her.

Good thing his skill is in lyrics instead of music, then.

I'd love Moana the animated series, following this premise after the events of the movie.
