>“In setting up this will be a very different thing, she’s not Mary Jane Watson, that’s not who the character is. But giving her the initials that remind you of that dynamic certainly is intriguing about what could go forward."

>"Clearly, she says she’s not obsessed with him, she’s just observant. But she’s there. And to have fun with that while at the same time having it be different characters that can provide a different dynamic [is the point].”

>"Peter’s had a lot of friends over the years in the comics, and a lot of schoolmates and characters he’s interacted with. It wasn’t just Mary Jane Watson; it wasn’t just Gwen Stacy; it wasn’t just Harry Osborn. So we were very interested in the other characters, and that’s where Liz came from and that’s where the version of the character Michelle came from.”

I am convinced this was their way of waffling, so if people lost their shit over such a radical change to MJ they could backpedal exactly like they're doing with, "Oh, we nicknamed her after one of the most famous love interests in comics as an HOMAGE she's totally not supposed to be that character though." But if people were like, "Hell yeah, new MJ rocks" they would have patted themselves on the back for their brave, new take on the character.

Look, you made it MJ. You know what you're doing.

You're not delivering to any audience. If you're gonna make a different character, MAKE IT A DIFFERENT CHARACTER. She shouldn't have to have the same initials as Mary Jane, because that's CLEARLY why they chose it.

To me, this only cements the fact that this was, originally, supposed to be Mary Jane Watson and that over the course of rewrites and/or the rumor being surfaced a while ago, that Marvel is trying to play it col, hitting a middle ground.

Unfortunately, this isn't a middle ground. This is cheating. Imagine if I had mother fucking James Bond, then replaced him with a character that's just "007" and played by a no-name actor of Hispanic heritage. He'd be funny, quirky, and never shut his mouth on missions, and likes to make friends.

It's okay though, because while he's 007, he wouldn't be James Bond.

That's not how this shit works, Feige. /co/ is not backed the fucked off by him, because his claim only furthers exemplifies the mistake this was. It's was a poor choice doing this.

God, we'll never get a good Spidey film that actually appreciates its source ever again. Fuck me.
>>
>>93751381
> doesn't act like MJ
> doesn't look like MJ
> nothing in common with the character besides her initials

Why is it MJ again? Sounds like a shitty excuse for a character if all you need is a pair of initials to be her

Then why not use any of them you fucking retard.

How can someone speak so many words and yet say so little? Don't act like this was some genius master plan of yours. Y'all done fucked up. Accept that. The entire ~joke of subverting the character and having her both be and not be Mary Jane Watson at the same time was fucking stupid and nowhere near as clever as you think it sounded back in the writers' room. Downplay her in future movies, have the ACTUAL Mary Jane show up, move on.

This was stupid.
>>
>>93750424

I suppose it could be inferred that the kids know her and know another side to her (she's evidently on the decathalon team?), but all we as the audience are shown is her being nothing but consistently shitty to them. What's worse is nobody reacts to it negatively (or at all, really).

Why do they want to hang out with someone who's such a bitch and shows nothing but contempt for them and literally everything around her?

>>93754899
Id rather they didn't. It wouldnt be so bad or glaring if Peter actually had a real conversation with her. It just didnt work. Im half convinced she had more scenes in an earlier cut, they got cold feet because in the original draft she was in fact Mary Jane, and her character got butchered in the editing room/renamed as an end result. That said, its best just to move on and maybe reconsider who she is to Peter. Parker did have a sassy roommate named Michelle if I recall correctly, maybe they could do something with that?

I think she's a composite character of Michele Gonzalez and Mary Jane. It's pretty obvious. Comic MJ wouldn't fit with the way they've approached this reboot, she'd come off as obnoxious and annoying in a live action movie, thats just how things translate. Combining the snarky and tomboyish aspects of Michele and the confident and enticing aspects of MJ is probably what they're going to do. I doubt this MJ is going to stay the way she is in homecoming- obvious character development up ahead

Saying "She'll play a bigger role in later movies" doesnt really validate anything anon. Thats like saying ASM2's Rhino wasnt shit because he was going to be a bigger thing in a future movie that will never happen now. Michelle isnt a terrible character, but she isnt a good one either. Honestly, I don't like two things about MJ.
One, she's not Mary Jane, why make her MJ then? Executives trying to have their cake and eat it too annoys me.
But more than that, there are specific attributes that I find in characters like this MJ that I hate.
>girl who's not conventionally attractive, like hot babe/supermodel, but not ugly either
>snarky all the time, doesn't get called out on it by "the good guys"
>quirky/unique in interests and/or social mannerisms
>almost never in trouble, but if she is, there's very obvious karmic comeuppance to the wrongdoer

Can this character type go away already? It's the type of bitches that take a black and white picture of a rotten apple, add a caption like

Question: So whats the casual audience reaction to "MJ" anyway? Is there any indication that they might retcon this later or is fan reaction encouraging for Michelle to stay?
>>93755339
At least he served a purpose. Although obviously not the Flash fans were hoping for, he at least filled in the role of school bully who regularly shits on Peter (in an oddly homo sort of way)
>>
>>93750424
The slavery thing was just her being an edgelord (edgelady?)
>>
>>93755386
Casuals don't care because they have no emotional investment in comic continuity. This is the same audience that paid to see Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill, and all the Bayformers movies. They don't care about characters or quality. Just as long as they can have a laugh between inhaling popcorn.
>>
>>93750359
Now I am really confused.
I had absolutely no idea who she was. Figured she was just a minor side character played by some whoever actress. But she was surprisingly fun in the movie for how little she was in it. And then it ended with her being "MJ". I thought that was pretty neat, from the selection of characters already presented in the movie I figured she was a neat one to keep around. What with the previous girl not sticking around and whatnot.

So it looked like she'd be pretty important. And now they're telling me she is not?
Ok, whatever. But then who will be important? It had a good ending already so what's with this back and forth I am getting now?
And will any of the old characters carry over to any notable extent? There is Ned. And they could focus on Flash, but will they? Who else even is there disregarding the villains.

Ignoring the comics and trying to think like a casual, I liked her. I thought she was relatively amusing. The only MJ I'm really knowledgeable about is Ultimate, so I don't think I'm qualified to judge. I'll accept her as an MJ, but not a Mary Jane.
>>93755446
I only paid to see Bayformers for some live action Transformer fights. If I want a story and good, I'll watch one of the cartoons or read IDW. But I don't expect much from the movies.

No. I am saying she was surprisingly neat for the screentime that she had. As stated.

There weren't that many supportive characters to begin with male or female. And by the end of the movie there are even fewer. Was my point pretty much.

I was more bothered by how different Flash was. But by the time I had finally made peace with the new version of Flash I wasn't really bothered by MJ either.

It's the fact that lazy Disney, Sony, and Marvel execs push diversity just for points with the current PC culture. It doesn't come from a genuine place and it's incredibly obvious. Someone brought up, and I'm inclined to agree, that it being the third version of Spider-Man in 15 years does sort of justify a bit of a change up. I think they should've just gone further and not used the names, though, if they're going to be that different.

Also, wasn't Mary Jane MJ kind of a bitch in the comics until Gwen died and she realized how badly it'd hurt Peter?

Mary Jane was the 60s image of a rebellious free spirit. These days, her wild, party-crashing personality is not just the norm among teenage girls, but mandatory if they want to have a social life at all.

"MJ" is an update of the character, it's what rebellious, free-spirited girls are like nowadays... or at least it would've been six to ten years ago, before anti-fun identity politics and Offensivism became the standard mindset among the youth.
>>
>>93757042

True. She is not Mary Jane Watson.

But having been given the moniker "MJ" no matter what her actual name is, be it Michelle or Monkeyfucker Jalopy III, means that in all likelihood in the writers' attempt to put a new spin on the canon for the third time means Mary Jane Watson will not ever appear and this is what we get instead.

Fine, call her Michelle. Go all out and call her Michelle Gonzales. As someone said upthread, there are a dozen canon love interests not yet touched by other adaptations they can choose from in the name of keeping things fresh for a new one. But it's the tongue in cheek fuck-you-endess of "MJ" that's pissing people off. Be bold, pick a new direction, and confidently stick with it. There's no need to half-assedly attempt to be clever and poke the bear.

The point isn't whether or not she's realistic or whatever the point is what end does she serve.

Everything about a movie is crafted and created. Even shit that's REALISTIC is guided by the hand of the director. It has to serve some purpose. Time spent on her is time not spent on other things. Even if it's just a handful of lines those minutes could be used better elsewhere

Who is this meant to cater to? SJWs?

Because from what I've seen, even MJfags on Tumblr hate this with how it essentially replaces a core female character in Spidey lore with decades of comic history. They could have made her "Mary Jane" in personality and it would have been fine. Instead they make this OC-donut-steel while still having the gall to slap the "MJ" initials on her, almost as if the actress didn't have the chops to actually take on Mary Jane's role.

And that's what people find insulting about it, she's nothing at all like "MJ" beyond using her initials because correlating her with the idea of "muh Spidey love interest", which shows how much they really give a shit about her character.

Except the damn monument started being built like 15 years before the civil war, it wasn't in the south, and it was only finished 20 years AFTER the civil war.
>>
>>93759110

I think it was a really misguided attempt by the writers to capture the spirit of one extremely specific demographic (that they themselves don't actually belong to) for the sake of appealing to modern audiences instead of going for a more timeless and traditional depiction of the character that won't date the film horribly in just a few years' time.

Really I could see Toomes still wanting to kill Peter. Like I said, I dunno. If she was supposed to be Japanese in the show they shouldn't have made her white just to cast a big name actress or whatever their reason is. The only reason to change a character's race is if you've got an actor so good they can work around the change, or if the change is in some way in service to the plot. No one cares that Morgan Freeman's character in Shashank was supposed to be Irish because it's fucking Morgan Freeman.

Nope. That's a logical jump/excuse some people used to defend it, but it's bunk. The thing is, she's in an android body, which means she can take whatever form she likes. However, she is Japanese and identified as such throughout the franchise, and her body/android model was literally a mass production model chosen to not be conspicuous.
That aside, it's kind of a stretch to see a dark-haired woman living/working in Japan, speaking Japanese, with the name "Motoko Kusanagi" and decide that she's white.

Not everyone who disagrees with you does so out of ignorance. You're insecure about your opinions because you conflate them with your personality and your morals. I'm not attacking you personally by expressing my opposite opinions.

>>93760187
I get that all love interests have some distinction which sets them apart from other love interests but the love interest character, at its core, is the most interchangable character in any story. Their personality typically has the least influence on the plot or the other characters and the criteria of their ability to act on the plot can usually be summed up as "be there for the hero and kiss him". They can fall out every now and then, but they will eventually come slinking back and their relationship with other characters is often pretty negligible. Is MJ iconic to people? Of course. Do I think she's some sacred cow who cannot be dethroned from her position as Peter's girlfriend in any depiction of the Spider-Man story? Of course not. Iconic as she is, she's a love interest. Literally anyone could take her place and do her job just as well.

Depends on their role desu. Though as far as Spider-Man goes, yeah, MJ or Gwen or Liz or Deb or Carlie or whoever is going to fill the same narrative role and only their personalities. But someone like Black Cat, that would be a change. Or Jessica Carradine, the burglar's daughter. Or even do what Spectacular did, which was put Black Cat in Jessica's role.

I feel like Black Cat doesn't really fit the standard love interest niche though. She's not the sweet, perfect girl who's always by the hero's side no matter what. She's doesn't kiss him at the end for that final scene before the credits start rolling. She's temptation: the bad girl with the interesting personality who serves as an obstacle for the hero's true love for INSERT GIRL HERE. Of course she's a more interesting character who's more essential to the plot: she isn't bogged down by having to be a generic waifu for people to imprint on. She gets to be a character first an a love interest second.

Insisting that MJ or that love interest characters, in general, are weak characters by nature of the role they serve in the story is some painfully lazy bullshit. Especially when MJ herself represents a major step forward for female characters in comics. You can say that she's just there to "be there for the hero and kiss him," but somebody who actually has one (1) fucking clue about the context and trappings of superhero stories can recognize that MJ is a character who challenges Peter immensely to take greater responsibility for his emotional relationships and mature as a person. tl;dr -

>>
>>93760458
Look, I can tell I'm starting to offend you, so here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to say this as nicely as possible.

MJ was a step forward in the sense that she had something resembling an actual personality and she forced Peter to evolve as a character because of it. I get that. I'm not unsympathetic to the value of MJ's character to Peter's development. I'm not strictly against the use of MJ as a love interest: I may not give a shit about her, but it's not as if I despise her in any way shape or form. Likewise, I have no qualms with her being THE love interest for Peter. That's cool. I don't give a shit.

However, I do not believe that MJ is the be all and end all of love interests for Peter. I'm not going to lose my shit when they don't use either Gwen Stacy leading up to MJ or MJ herself because, when all is said and done, the love interest role can very easily be filled by another girl. Another girl can invoke that character development in Peter. Another girl can be the spitfire or the demure and loyal wife or the beautiful girl-next-door. Another girl can do the job and that's something I can't say for most character types. The love interest is not set in stone. That's why a character can have multiple love interests over a single saga whereas all the other characters stay the same. That's why you get the likes of Chat and Carlie Cooper when characters like JJJ and Aunt May remain relatively intact. The love interest is an expendable role. It can be altered to fit with what the central character is feeling or the particular themes of an arc. Where all other characters must be consistent, the love interest can be mixed and matched because they are a love interest first and a character second. They are specifically designed to be love interests and, because of that, they can be removed from any story when the writer feels that role can be better served by someone new.

Love is transitory and so those characters must be equally so.

>>
>>93760651
Alright. That's one interpretation. I think it might be rooted in paranoia as much as anything, though. I think Marvel is mostly against stagnation, as is any comic character. when Pete and MJ got married, they started to worry that sales would be affected by the stagnation of both of their characters and saw fit to take action. I don't necessarily agree with the decisions they made, but I understand why they made them. It's the same thing you see with any cape comic character who's getting too close to settling down and becoming too "boring". BAM! A curveball gets thrown into their lives and they get thrown as far back to square one as they can possibly get away with. Got to keep the ball rolling, after all.

>>
>>93760708
Amazing how no cape writers/editors ever seem to realize that "as far back to square one as they can possibly get away with" is the definition of stagnation.
>>
>>93760708
It's actually the exact opposite. Marvel has consistently shown that they are terrified of the thought of Peter growing up and being an actual adult, so any time he starts to actually learn from his mistakes and become a real person, they lose their spaghetti and insist in some kind of awful retcon or status change to bring him back to being the same high school loser he always was. Gwen Stacy was literally killed because editorial mandate didn't think Peter would be relatable to readers if he was married, which is also the reason One More Day happened.
>>
>>93760086

So many things in this movie weren't thought out and used for quick jokes.

Could have been great.
>>
>>93760783
That's the fundamental problem with cape comics: status quo is god. Ironically, because of people like the ones in this thread who insist it HAS to be MJ or it HAS to be Peter or whatever the fuck other minor quibble they want to blow up into a major ethical debate. Superhero universes are forced to constantly repeat the same arcs with the same characters ad infinitum because anything resembling too great a shift from that beloved status quo will draw cries of blasphemy as people light their torches and grab their pitchforks. People grow up reading these characters and accept them into their hearts a certain way and become personally offended if they aren't done a certain way. Editors and writers have to pander to that unwillingness to move on or try new things with a need to constantly keep their audience guessing and entertained and the result is a constantly repeating cycle of pushing as many changes as they can before the outrage sets in and then turning back the clocks so they can do it again.

It's tedious.
>>
>>93760813
Their idea of stagnation is very different from the narrative idea of stagnation, funnily enough. They don't want things to get "boring" by having their characters evolve into being too real or too well-formed and so whenever it looks like things are going to reach a point of stagnation where the character can settle down with one girl and raise a family or maybe even a fucking doberman, they drop a goddamn retcon on the whole shebang and start all over again.

excuse me, just best version of Liz Allen coming through.
Spectacular Spider-Man was awesome and Liz was too good for him in that show
>>
>>93759933
I care about the romance in Spider-man fuck you. It makes heroes feel alive and real.
>>
>>93760967
Liz Allen was a pretty great love interest in that show. Honestly, I see that as further proof that love interests can be swapped out without the story being affected. I mean, in that series, Gwen and Liz were entirely different characters and MJ barely had a presence and it fucking worked. Why? Because a love interest can be changed to suit the whims of a particular writer and, if that writer (or writers) knows what they're doing, they'll pull it off anyway. All the love interests needs to be is a good-looking girl with a pleasant personality who is there for the hero. Everything else is narratively irrelevant.
>>
>>93760607
Thanks for the apology, but me hyperbolically berating you for an ill-thought out opinion doesn't warrant it. I can see that you've actually taken two seconds to consider the role of romantic interests in comics, which is all I wanted in the first place.
>>
>>93760998
Romance? Yes.

Particular love interests which must always be used and you never have an option to reinvent the wheel? No.

Love interests are ultimately nothing characters and they can be dropped in and out of a story because of it. Throwing a tantrum because this one isn't your love interest is an action which is largely rooted in biases and emotions as opposed to anything resembling logic or equity.

Same. If people can't into romance in a Spider-Man story, they might want to find something else to entertain themselves with.
>>
>>93761029
This was what made Spectacular Spider-Man great, there was a clear love for the source material of Spider-Man and it also wasn't afraid to divulge into something new and different to make the story seem fresh.
The love interests genuinely felt natural and the villians even had a level of humanity to them that clearly made you care about them.
Definetly one of my favorite iterations of Spider-Man and I don't think the movies will ever compare
>>
>>93761066
If the character of the love interest works well to play of the character and brings about an era of good writing they should bring it back.
Just because you don't like MJ doesn't mean she's good, sure you can throw the reverse of that at me, but people loved the JMS run and she was fairly integral in that run. You can say that people liking it doesn't make it good, but the thing is I can't really convince you something you don't like is good.
It'd end in /lit/ type shitposting where people are quoting walls of prose at eachother followed by even longer walls of text about how this is better written than the other thing.

I don't know if that show will ever be topped as far as Spider-Man adaptations go. What's frustrating is that Homecoming tried and failed to approach a lot of the same ground SSM masterfully covered. Teenaged Peter struggling to balance school, work, and social life, diversity of cast felt organic and not forced, characters all experienced development, was a love letter to practically every prior iteration of Spider-Man, Peter was funny when he needed to be, serious at others, etc.
>>
>>93761191
The argument was never about whether or not the MJ character was "good", it was about whether or not Peter's love interest literally had to be MJ done exactly like the comics to which my response was that of course it fucking didn't because love interests are of an inherently interchangeable nature and claiming otherwise is a judgement born out of your own individual interest in a love interest character and not out of any objective, even-handed observation of the narrative role of a love interest.

I don't care about MJ. That's not in any way a judgement on her character or how well she plays off of Peter's. I don't care if they make a black version of MJ in an ultimate universe or if they introduce a new love interest who isn't MJ or if Peter stays with MJ for a million bazillion years and he just crawls up inside her vagina and expands outwards until he becomes MJ and controls her decaying body like the alien from Men in Black.

My only point from the beginning has been that, as a love interest, MJ is not essential to any story told about Spider-Man especially when it comes to alternate universes and adaptations. She can be someone else. She can literally be anyone else because a love interest is not integral.

Here's my theory:
>Feige and Marvel are hyped to just make a Spider-Man movie
>Pascal and the Sony Pictures mongoloids wanna get their snot and peanut butter-encrusted hands all over the MCU's new toy
>They have to let them have some sway or else they risk jeopardizing future deals and harming their own brand
>Pascal suggests race-bending Mary Jane
>"Progressives will want to go see it and manchildren will get so mad they'll hate watch it!" or something to that effect, because clearly it worked so well for Ghostbusters
>While Feige isn't averse to the idea of racebending, he understands what a retarded idea this would be
>No way are they casting some Disney Channel nobody as a blaxican Mary Jane Watson, a character that would need to stick around for at least a decade
>Sony forces their hand because that's the kind of dumbass shit they consider a good idea
>"Okay yeah sure Amy, we'll do your racebent MJ"
>Cuts her down to maybe 5 lines
>Removes any and all hint of romantic tension between her and Peter aside from "I'm not obsessed with him I'm just very observant"
>She and Peter share maybe two lines
>She's relegated to a d-list comic relief background character
>"My friends call me MJ"
>Movie comes out, people have seen it
>"Haha what no way she's not Mary Jane haha I mean unless you guys want her to be haha guess we'll have to wait and see haha"
>If people love her, she can be Mary Jane in future movies
>If no one cares, they can just drop her/keep her as a minor side-character since she had less screentime than the fucking Shocker

It's Marvel Studios attempting damage control on a shitty Sony mandate. Remember, this is the studio who is planning an entire series of films around the idea of "girls who all know Spider-Man". They're not a bright bunch.

On the flip-side there's Marvel. Say what you want about the MCU, but they know and understand by this point what people do and don't want to see.

This.
People seem to be pretty lukewarm on her; the consensus I've seen is she's a pointless character with a few half-decent quips delivered by an actress who can't act. So Marvel's reaction has been "yeah it was just an homage haha just a little joke lol just a teensy little reference there haha".

But you know that if she was somehow the breakout character, Marvel would start pushing her super hard.

Could we not get some kinda middle ground?
Like, a fun, vivacious MJ who does modeling and stuff, but isn't what they considered to be "a real sexy fox" by 70's standards?

Like, there's nothing wrong with a redhead wearing flannels or other indie shit, we can have both. Her whole deal is that she's a class clown/party animal to mask the much more chill persona she hides on the inside. I liked Spectacular MJ, and how she put a lot of effort into looking like she was too cool to care about shit (even though she clearly did).

I really don't understand why everyone suddenly cares about MJ's representation in movies. she was always Spider-man's girl, nothing else.

if this movie wants to give her some characterization by making her a snarky wiseass who'll get off her high horse soon enough then that's ok with me because that's what the character and the movie was looking to be heading into. plus she's "the girl" in the group of nerds, what's not to like about that?.

while super accurate i don't understand why mary jane HAS to be in this movie. he didn't meet her in hs (except for ultimate sm). he has always had a little bit of a harem and since they're playing the long game, not just 1 or two movies, why not have different girls in different parts of his life.
so liz is his hs crush, then this mj maybe, but then by the time he goes to college gwen is in the picture and when he graduates and is like more adult mary jane is end game.

people seriously want a 16 year old to just pair up with his love life and then we sit through 2-3 movies her getting caught by villains and then he needs to save her. like fuck that, seems awful way to just follow what we already saw in 5 movies. like at least give him different bitches to have to save. imagine they threw mary jane in this movie and basically she's been kidnapped and dropped off stuff since she was 15 then every year or so it happens again until shes old and dies. she would have severe ptsd by the second time for sure.
