The most obvious one but you could probably make the argument that Ledger's overtly serious portrayal created this new trend of people trying to out do each other of how "dark" and "crazy" the Joker can be with little thought put into the actual character. But counter-counter argument is you could say this was a on going process since A Death in the Family and The Killing Joke.

You can argue if Star-Lord was faithful to the Claremont era Star-Lord, since he was suppose to be an adventurer Han Solo type of swashbuckler and Englehart's version was a jerk and MCU Peter portrayed both versions perfectly.

He wasn't faithful to Giffen's interpretation but at that point that character was older and jaded so they weren't going with him.

The only problem is that comic Star-Lord and comic Tony didn't benefit from those portrayals but that is the fault of the comic writers flanderizing the MCU characters and not being able to capture what made them great.

It's like 90% of the problem I have with meme-lord. I really like the gotg movies, but here you have one of the single best superhero costumes in creation, and it's one of the things lost in translation from books to movies. It's probably never coming back, either.
>>
>>93647791
Yeah but let's be honest, the actual character of DnA Star-Lord was riffing on Mal Reynolds even harder than the MCU version's costume. Whereas the movie version winds up feeling like more of a distinct entity. A character that, by emulating the heroes of his childhood, winds up transcending them and becoming his own man.

There wasn't really a good way to get Annihilation Star-Lord without making Nova first, or having a Nova-like character to fill-in for him, either way a straight adaptation wasn't really possible. Pratt fits the character really well and the overall characterization isn't all that different from the DnA Peter. So yeah, I'm actually pretty cool with MCU Star-Lord.

I didn't say I don't like the 70s stuff, but it's not as if he was some beloved character with decades of established history behind him. there's a reason he only got a handful of stories before Giffen pulled him from the dumpster, and that reason is cause nobody gave a shit

Burton's Penguin was a major reinvention to the character. It had it's positives and negatives, but it's responsible for cementing some of Penguin's best traits as a character nowadays.
Gotham's Penguin is more faithful to the comics, but the character is reduced to Joker with mommy issues and a funny walk.

This had been going on ever since TKJ.
Ledger's Joker is like a combination of everything that's terrible about The Joker into a single portrayal.
What he did was just popularize the idea that Joker needs to engage in moronic and edgy speeches about anarchy half the time.
And make Joker cosplays 100% more popular than they were before

Kind of sort of. The whole point of the redesign and the run was to reinvent the character of Catwoman because she had stayed a fairly flat femme fatale for most of her existence. It does't act like older runs never happened, but she's not exactly the same character, either.

There's no flat answer since what was good about a character's comic depiction is subjective, anyway.

Take Captain America's costumes in the MCU. They tried to update it to something a little closer to what it actually looked like for the avengers (without actually doing the weird chainmail look) but the fact of the matter was that the ragtag WW2 soldier look was just better and makes him look more like a soldier out of time, so they went back to it.
>>
>>93650677
I'd pay good money to see a power-armoured bald Luthor yell I WILL DISINTEGRATE YOU at Superman.
>>
>>93650853
Just make sure to get the core aspects of the character and you're good to go.
Reinventing a character only works if said character is dull as fuck, like Carol for example.

For all the shit Star-Lord gets he's not too far away from the DnA version. The comics, in the other hand, flanderized him into a dumb buffoon though.
>>
>>93650829
Well he definitely started as a power-hungry whackjob in the silver age, but I'm just miffed they killed him so early and precluded any further development. And before he even got to menace Mar-Vell and Carol, no less.
>>
>>93650960
More like:
>"hmmmmm, yeah, yeah, i-i will evaporate the hmmmm super man!"

>>
>>93650853
Depends on how they are in the source material and how is the medium they are being adapted to. Like when there's a drastic tone shift, or the character needs to take on an expanded role, or the character is simply underdeveloped.
Sometimes adaptations are necessary for giving characters some much needed characterization, like >>93648026, >>93650015 or pic related.

There's no flat answer and obviously there are a ton of bad examples of synergy but sometimes deviations are necessary, especially for comic book characters who change all the time and often without a defining art direction.

Its not a clear answer, as it depends on the character. Some have way more to work with than others.

I just think whoever is adapting a character need to be mindful with how they approach that character, as that will inform what they are like for a whole generation.
