Is a webcomic a way to get into the animation industry? Like showing any form of past experience with meeting deadlines, etc? I'm going to make one regardless, with some animations in it, but I just got a little curious about it.
>>
>>93513740
You need to make a pilot for any show in big scale, a manga if you're jap, and the whole series yourself if you live utside the US
>>
>>93513792
Well, fuck. Toon boom here I come.
>>
Can I post animation here? I need to "gitgud" first.
>>
>>93514105
We have some animators coming from time to time, although I'm not sure if this is the best place to share if it's not a webcomic-related animation. Post it anyway.
>>
Working a bit at the time.
A bit at the time.
>>
>>93514841
This is just being nitpicky on my part but you should try using other fonts. Using just plain sans serif makes it lack emotion.
>>
>>93515175
Most of the text on that page seems to be from a computer, so suits something impersonal. But the final "Energize" could be in a better comic font.

Seriously, if you want fonts for comics, go to Blambot.com (as listed in the Scrub Author's Goodie Bag >>93513070). They're designed by a professional comics letterer, and there are plenty of free fonts especially for independent comic creators.

>93502828
My story's just a mess of improvised shit, but I like to think it adds up to something pretty entertaining over time. Often, by total accident, something thematically cool happens. Like I accidentally foreshadowed something perfectly. Can't really praise myself any. I mean I think the dialogue's funny, but generally not feelin pride storywise.
Buuuut if we're talking characters, I think they're pretty great. That's where I put most of the focus, and I feel like I could easily see fandomy shit cropping up, with people shipping or making OCs or whatever. As it is, most of the praise I get is from people who fixate on one random minor character who is their favorite. That always feels swell.

Those many lines in the hair and the shades don't really do justice to the cleanness of the rest, but I'd still check it out.
>>
>>93522830
yeah for one thing what's with the horizontal lines in the hair? also her boobs arent as well placed as before
>>
>>93522830
>>93522917

I felt that the hair was pretty empty and unusual with no detail to it so i gave it some lines to make it look better imo but also feel better when thinking about it. tho i could see how i possibly went overboard with it.

i'll try reducing the amount to the hair. also experimenting with the hair to get it more appealing in shape. i feel that could also be a significant put off for some people with the lines.
>>
>>93523296
I mean, the detail you've given is great if it's meant to look like wicker or rattan or something. remember how you did that, it looks good. but for hair, yeah, only the longitudinal lines, not horizontal ones

>>
>>93524421
That was actually a great move, I mean unless you are super popular or have completely unique product your fanbase will grow slowly cheer up
>>
>>93524421
Fanart will always be more popular than original work. Established comics and cartoons are more readily consumed. It would be like going to a bookstore and buying a book at random (assuming all they had to go by were a couple of pages). If your table was nothing but original work, then I'm not surprised it didn't sell, so don't think it's your work.
Next time, get a bigger fan base before getting a table, and then start with something like 70% fan art, 30% original work (10% of which should be comics). And work your way to 50:50.
>>
>>93524908
>Next time, get a bigger fan base
yeah, thats so easy. thanks. All I had to do was be popular, now I know.
And all the prints were fan art.

Tell me /hyw/, do you see another joke besides the main one?
When I asked a friend for critique he said he didn't get why they were all wearing similar clothes in the second panel. I thought the joke about getting lost in a group of people who dress/look the same would be pretty simple but I guess not.
How do I know if a joke is actually funny and I don't just like it because it's silly?

Bummer. If anyone has an idea for something that might draw more attention I'll try it out.

Maybe we should extend it to "how's your /co project?" or something. That way animators and stuff feel more welcome but it differentiates it from just one off drawings like general art threads. Just a thought.
>>
>>93529720
You image is fine, that guy is an asshole.
I did like the old one that was made to look like an old comic cover with the 10ct pricetag which was a bit self-ironic.
On a related note, who started with the numbering and were there webcomic threads before this semi-general emerged?
>>
>>93528407
>How do I know if a joke is actually funny and I don't just like it because it's silly?

First step is sharing with family and friends and see what they think of your joke, since those circles tend to be not-so-harsh while voicing their opinions.

Later you can try here but don't expect everyone to be soft. For me, maybe it's because I'm not a native speaker but I don't get the joke. I mean, "as big as a planet" implies he is saying she is fat, but she doesn't look fat on any way that makes you immediately assume it.
>>
>>93529914
This has always been a semi-general and the numbering was around too, but then the threads died and the guys that kept making them forgot to ass numbers and sometimes even hyw pics

>>
>>93528407
Damn, that's hard to explain. I've just been around so many people all throughout the years and just grabbed bits and pieces of their humor and personality and just kinda made it my own, so I never really knew how I could incorporate lots of humor into my writing. Mostly just like certain scenes where it just springs up into my head in a situation.

My guess is just studying certain groups or jokes that everyone can get and find generally funny.

Sometimes humor and come from messing with people's expectations of things. Damn, it's really hard to explain humor, isn't it?

>>
>>93531411
I guess it would depend on why he can't make other choices.
>>
>>93531411
if you mean having the main villain be evil for evil's sake, then yes. if being evil is simply the best option for the character or will result in the best outcome, that's something you have to deal with in the backstory
>>
>>93531608
>>93531727
So I don't think it's any of those. It's He's a machine programmed to do what he does. He doesn't know he's a machine.
>>
>>93531877
That could work but then I feel like he shouldn't have too much focus during points when he would be expected to question what he's doing. It's a neat concept but it seems like it would be very easy to write boringly
>>
>>93531924
So the big question in the story is how come he's leading a group of people whose victory gets him absolutely nothing to gain. That's the explanation.

That being said I agree, it could be very easy to write it boringly
>>
>>93530519
>someone on hyw who can actually draw

color me surprised
>>
>>93531944
I like that actually, it's like the android in Fallout 3. Charismatic, well-liked, I see it working best if a lot of the focus were on his actions and leadership and relationships with other characters, to distract from the fact that he has no actual stake in the conflict

You would have to portray him as fulfilled at the same time by other things in his life, which works well if he's a natural and likable leader, that way people will assume he's fighting for the sake of the group out of empathy

that could be a really cool mindfuck
>>
>>93532011
Well if all goes according to plan and I can stretch this out a bit the cycle is Part 1 he finds out he's a machine and is killed upon finding out. Part 2 is he's revived about 2 decades later and continues his work. This time coming to grips with what he is and convinces himself that he does what he does not because of programming but because he truly believes in the cause.

That's no worse than a primordial demon antagonist who is just the embodiment of evil. The art is great! The story flow is strange.
It feels like we're supposed to have a bunch of background dynamics going on, but we don't.

I think there needs to be a few pages preceding these, setting up these characters, or at least giving us some idea of why there is any conflict between them, other than "cliche dark girl dislikes cliche light girl"
>>
>>93533925
I dunno, I saw it on a reaction image once and thought it was pretty funny.
>>
Anyone ever share there work with there family? I sometimes tell my parents about my story ideas, but then they try to suggest stuff or force in ideas that I feel dont mesh well with my story plans. I love my family, but not the best people to go to for help with stories.
>>
>>93533964
Who the fuck uses the kung pow quote without knowing what it is? Not only do you outright steal characters you can't even steal dialogue correctly
>>
>>93529930

Thanks,
One thing I want to ask is if I were to make a comic/short animation, should I keep the characters pretty simplistic in design? Should I go all out, but take forever to update? I know I still have a lot to learn about drawing.
>>
>>93534256
actually that's kind of what makes it not stealing. it's cultural osmosis.
>>
>>93534243
My family had predictable results. A cluelessly high level of approval, an ignorant amount of disapproval, both at once, either in order, alternating, and just generally not worth letting them know.

Carrion Girls guy, I know you're still in these threads.

The latest page was weaksauce. Skeggold looks like a chump who just got lucky. I'm just gonna drop the comic if you seriously can't put any forethought into what you write. Treating the characters like that is inexcusable.

you just made me check out Carrion Girls-

what are you talking about? The last few pages are neat, and the art is looking great. (Massive improvements there)

Having a main character gets beaten down by someone stronger than they are isn't a bad thing if it's set up right, and it looked like it was.

I decided to do the "24 hours and what ever state the drawing is in, it is now done" rule for getting myself to actually start a comic. I'm not very good at drawing anyway. So I have until tomorrow at the same time I make this post to complete the first page. What is a good standard size for a webcomic page? I'm just going to publish to a Tumblr blog with the theme from the goodie bag post, what's a good standard page size for that theme? I'm working in Photoshop with a small Wacom Intuos.

I find it similar to doing reviews in a way.

If you go like, let's say, Penny Arcade? You do need to play a lot of games once they come out independently if you like them or not, which can be either frustrating, tiresome and expensive. So if you don't really have the income for doing so, it's better to just stick with something that is both popular and you like (and you can exploit for jokes)

Actually, I stopped working on the original version late 2015, and started working on a reboot. Some of the pages in the new version is actually from pre-reboot retooled for the reboot.

I did most of the work on the first chapter through out 2016, but I have started working full time at my current job so my available free time dwindled.

I rebooted the comic because I couldn't make a coherent narrative, and some of my ideas earlier on I felt embarrassed by. Because it took me so long between pages, I often come up with various idea in betwen in which I'll add or steer the new pages to. It makes the whole thing really messy and difficult to understand. So I thought I would work on a entire chapter of story to see if I can make it more coherent, but to be honest I am not really succeeding.

I think it's usually helpful to limit your color palette for bgs so that the characters stand out more. Maybe choose 2-3 main hues and have most of the colors in your bg be variations of those hues. Other than that, I just fill bucket and add a little rendering,

Oh in Britain the only people you insult are your friends, when someone takes a pot shot at you it's accepted that they're only ever doing it as friendly ribbing.
Thus the phrase: 'If you can't take a joke, get on your bike'

I found out that we sound mean when I moved to NZ and talked with Americans online. I've had friends tell me I'm mean to my British friends or once that was cruel to my own mother. Other British people never care, it's part of our culture.
Also because of this very few non-brits can tell when we're being sarcastic.

Pic is what the characters will be wearing for the story. The class II harness isn't usually used in their dungeon excursions.
Tfw you just wanna get started on your comic but you're not finished with the script. I wanna start drawing but I might miss the potential to insert some foreshadowing or in-world reference to something.
