Decide where your little footy hills live Edition

Here we talk about what makes us happy and agonize with terrible pain as well, which is making webcomics.

Share your progress, help others with some good criticism, analyze webcomics you may like or dislike.

But most importantly, from all of us here I'd like to wish you happy painting. That'll be our little secret.

i don't visit here as much as i used to but i was wondering if some of you still have the prototype designs of your characters

for better or worse i lost most of the original drawings in an old computer, those were so bad im kinda glad it happened i must have some mid stage drawings in the archive from when i used to be more active, and the very first drawing of a charecter must be somewhere burried in a 3ds memory stick, i just kinda wanna know the story behind your designs

I still remember drawing these in school one morning. There are some even more prototypical ones, but they were basically just my trying to draw final fantasy sprites from memory on some post-its, so those don't really count. This is where I was trying to think of some designs I could draw over and over, with the sensibilities of sprites, filling out a decent team of basic archetypes..
I don't remember if Soroban was meant to have a PET hedgehog or turn INTO one, but either way that was dropped pretty quickly. Other than that and some minor proportion changes and Loki's hair, it didn't change much going into the real comic.. which I think I started in earnest later that day or week.

I also have some pencil drawings of the new/older cast for N, but I have never scanned those (since I don't .. scan anymore, I'd have to photograph them). They're kind of interesting, Sasha went through the most changes I think.
I DO however have a few digital drawings (These would have been done with a mouse) of the first versions of older Mizu. She still had the same hair from her younger self and I hadn't streamlined the belt.. these were one and two years ahead of the new comic starting up, so one of them was only a year after the previous ended.
I also keep a drawing of some of my characters in my wallet, set a few years after the end of the first comic, except I drew it before the very end so someone's missing

Is there a way to make people feel somewhat sorry for a villain while still keeping him completely irredeemable?

A villain that's dug himself too deep in to back out, and he knows it, but still has to go through with it no matter how bad his actions get. Try not to make him feel too bad about it.

basically yeah. People can pity without forgiving. You give him a good reason to be mad, then a terrible decision made based on that anger.

Not to offend you pal, the only thing admirable about you is your persistence. If you really want to improve in art you have to study it, like anything else.

If you really want to become a pro you can contact both me and PipSQK sensei, we can you a guide to actually improve
>>
>>93489043
You'll get no argument from me. I've definitely been letting quantity outweigh quality for some time, something i used to think was pretty much okay for comics, but increasingly feel otherwise, looking back. I only just started doing construction at all, thanks to these threads, only just bumped the size up enough that the lines don't look like shit, only just started using line guides so my lettering would be straight.. that's the downside to 'just doing it for yourself' which I still wholeheartedly endorse. Sometimes yourself's standards aren't very high.
Still gonna finish this sucker up as-is, then study harder before starting the next one. Prolly couple years.
In the meantime though, normally I'd say I'd rather study on my own, but.. you and pips specifically, I like how you do shit.. and I like how pips redlines shit. So like, holy shit, I'm taking you up on that offer. Don't let me forget.

I'm thinking of writing a story where a guy suddenly finds out his roommate is a werewolf or other kind of animal or monster. Kind of want to make it looney tunes esque but not entirely sure on that yet. What would be a good reason for a werewolf or whatever else to want to live with a human?

Well, looks like my stalker got a clue about their behavior, but asked if we could still be friends.

I said no. Why would I positively reinforce stalker behavior?

Tracking my I.P.
Emotionally invasive(things that belong to my therapist, GF, and myself). Some things they made up, but if I did have an issue they constructed, I personally wouldn't announce it so pubically. Unless I was ready. All I saw was someone forcing an issue to build a deeper relationship they didn't have a right to.
Outright interrupting a conversation with various other artists to make it about me or them.

Why would I reinforce that behavior by giving them exactly what they want? Ends justify the means?

With all that being said I've made a personal decision from now on to avoid public forums like the plague.

I'm just going to pay artist on patron for tutorials. Maybe find ones that will critique artwork for a price. Then I can listen to someone I actually give a shit about, and get a critique without it leading them to think they can get into every other facet of my life.

So, I'm out of here. /blogpost.
>>
>>93492891

It's a tricky and weird position, even ignoring the fact that there will always be fangirls and fanboys that will try to excuse a villain no matter what.

The usual trick is to give them a backstory or motivation that makes you feel sorry for them, all while making their present selves evil shit.

It may be weeb stuff but Doflamingo in One Piece plays this kind of stuff well. He had a sad backstory and childhood but on one part he kind of got that shit on himself and on second part he was an evil guy since the beginning and his present actions can barely be excused by his tragic backstory.

>>
>>93497792
Nice/accurate of you to say, but I'm not gonna pass up potential pipsqk redlining. and i DO wanna study, just not right this minute.
It might seem frustrating that some people are content being slow improvers, but when you're a fast learner, needing-to-study is what's frustrating and annoying. It's like learning to drive if you could already run at like 30 mph. Yeah you probably still should, because you can't carry a family on your back and most of the time it's unpleasant to be outside so an enclsoed temperature-controlled space is ideal, plus you can't run fast enough for the highway, but if people like that existed would you blame them for not bothering to get a license?
>>
>>93497792
For those of us who have been here for years we've seen Coldfusion make excrutiatingly little progress after many people have offered to help him. He just doesn't improve and he probably should have if he actually tried and applied himself instead of giving up immediately.
>>
>>93497968
I didn't understand your metaphor but if you really wanna improve without being frustrated by anatomy-shading-perspective at least try practicing more your gesture, it will improve GREATLY your cartoony style
most artists here care a lot for details and ignore one of the more important parts of cartoon drawing: gesture and fluidity
good luck boi
>>
>>93498180
definitely, I've had a stiffness problem for ages. We've talked about it a lot in threads over the years, going back to drawthreads I used to frequent. Part of it is that I conciously fight being TOO loose (in art and in real life), part is that I get most of my anatomy knowledge from solid plastic toys. but I'm woikin' on it. really am. There's a long list of those impruuvements to make.
In the meantime though I'm better'n most people at robots, so there's that.

The design come from two sources, one is a magical mentor from a old square action RPG called Thread of Fate, a magical mentor character in there called Fancy Mel. Also a magical girl series called Nanoha.

I'm not going to bother pointing out the absurdity of what you're saying here, because I know it's a waste of energy. There is something profoundly wrong with you and you don't see it yet. when you see it 10 years from now it'll be too late, reevaluate yourself

Dude, you may not be the best at art and I think you will be forever stuck with your art style, but, I have to actually praise your motivation to keep drawing your comic. The fact that you are already chapters in is already enough to prove you're better than me, which I have nothing done. Just a long history of failed sketches

Someone in the last thread posted a butt lineup so I went ahead and drew a butt lineup since I haven't really drawn anything else lately.
Also, drawing butts are kind of fun and I could use more practice with drawing characters from behind.

>>93500412
Yeah, I've put a soundtrack together. It's mostly Sweet, Blur, Neon Indian and Flaming Lips.
Since the comic is supposed to take a lot of elements from psychedelia and New Age hippy shit, I want to try to find some more glam and psychedelic stuff for the playlist.

watch dem bent arms though. Common mistake, the arm suddenly gets too long when it bends
When in doubt, elbow yourself in the side. Feel how low your elbow goes? just past the end of your ribs, right? That or just match it to the other arm, which is juuust about right.
>>
>>93501943
Your comic isn't even bad or anything, it's just weird that doodling anime didn't get you a better sense of construction. Most shitty artists fail because they cannot into anatomy, and you can't, but your character design isn't so awful that it's the main issue here. Just... git gud at construction dude. Seriously. You already plug consistent hours into the comic.

honestly was planning on redrawing that arm, it gets too large like you said, and the hand is so weird looking.
I honestly didn't get too deep with the sketch for this one.
>>
>>93502265
I have started using construction though (for the comic I mean, always did for other stuff. Well, nearly always). I guess it doesn't show, because I'm still barely ever using perspective, but I'm still using a little of it, here and there (see those overhead shots? there's some recession towards the feet)
here i'll show you how I frequently sketch these chibi-ass motherfuckers (not every time, since part of the whole 'do a comic in comic style' thing was that I'd learn to do them consistently just by repeating, the way I learned how to draw spot-on snoopys and garfields and shit. yknow, symbol-drawing)
It's abbreviated for sure, but it's still an improvement over the previous. God, I actually considered the buckley art-recycle technique for a while. Every so often I'd re-re-consider it, then I'd pull up an old comic to recycle from and realize it looks like shit now. so there's definite improvement, it's just slow and subtle.

also some peeps might remember I did this dumb thing a few threads back, when someone needed help and more talented redliners weren't around. I did my best to try to explain the construction concepts, since I kinda understand 'em better than I actually utilize 'em. Just like French!
Like obviously this aint great but I at least get it. It's just a matter of practice now.

also looking at this folder and shit from this time, I found this shit.. what happened to the guy making the bird comic? is he still around somewhere? I was looking forward to more bird girl.
I did a constructiony one of her but it wasn't very good, as someone pointed out. hip joints and asscheeks were just two big spheres.

>>93502559
A bit unrelated, but how is your comic doing storywise and character wise? I've seen a lot of people at your drawing level succeed, and then improve their skills over time. Not saying that having good drawings aren't important, but I constantly see that story, characters, panel design, and rendering style (in terms of color/shade/lineart/etc.) make up for having average art.

People have told me to post a comic even though my art is mediocre, but I'm hesitant to post stuff here cause I've seen how cruel people can be here. I know some people give good constructive feedback here, but a lot of the time I see people just being cruel for the hell of it. I've been practicing and I can feel that I've gotten better. But sometimes I think I'm missing some piece of knowledge when it comes to writing and drawing since I never went to a university or something to learn proper art and anatomy and whatever else you need to draw well.

> I never went to a university or something to learn proper art and anatomy and whatever else you need to draw well.
You don't need to go to art school or uni to improve your art, you just need the time, effort, and dedication. Almost everything you can learn about art in college can be learned online or even through local classes. There are plenty of talented artists who are entirely self taught. If you want to improve your art put your nose to the grindstone and start studying anatomy, perspective, compositions, color theory, and etc.

This.
And in terms of writing, most creative writers are not professionally trained. Being a good writer is not about being able to write the story well, it's about being able to TELL the story well. Grammar and word choice can be learned, but the actual story telling aspect can be very hard (and some people believe you either have it, or you don't). So definitely don't worry about not being educated in writing.
