Finish writing it, create a comprehensive and complete story.
Cut it up into chapters / issues / books.
Drop everything else in your life and finish the first chapter / issue / book.
Push it to publishers until it gets picked up.
Get an agent to sell the publishing rights abroad.
Repeat until the story is complete.

I'm the anon who posted about their story about Nova and Mimi in the last thread.

An anon offered to RP with me which would be pretty cool. My throwaway email is pillowcaseghost at gmail, if you're here send me an email.

I'm out of town until july 4th but i'll reply to the email just can't rp until after then.

As for the advice on my story

The original idea was Nova was taken from her real parents to be princess, so she doesn't want to be princess because it was a life entirely chosen for her, she wasn't born into it just thrust into it. Mimi is a typical "Shy nobody who turns into strong somebody by the end"

Someone mentioned that just simplifying it so she's a queen's daughter would be better, but I kinda like the origin story i've built for her so far. What if i put this reveal closer to the climax where she doesn't trade places back with Mimi, do you think it could work that way?

The idea right now for what's preventing Mimi from going back is "out of potion ingredients lol" from Nova but that could either be a truth or a convenient lie from Nova since she's not an entirely honest or trustworthy person (So maybe her personal growth for the story could be to go from this kinda shitty person to a real princess type?).

Another idea floating in my head is Mimi becomes princess instead but that seems kinda unrealistic since she'd be abandoning her family to do so.

With these added notes, what are continuing thoughts?

tldr for those who missed last thread
>Nova is a witch, gonna be princess, doesn't wanna be
>Tries to escape through magic portal made with a potion, accidentally brings Mimi (a normal human) into her world instead
>With a spell they agree to switch places so Nova can just relax and be a normal witch for awhile
>Climax happens when Nova doesn't want to switch back and maybe goes through the portal herself to take Mimi's place

Thanks guys. I'm running on little sleep right now, sorry this was long.

I'm not really good at writing so I just followed another anon's advice to just stick so simple plots.
Here's the twin protagonists. Sorry for the Taglish, too lazy to rewrite it.
Translation:
>"Anyways, we're out of Resal so suck it up, buttercup." " You're an ass, you know that."

>"Ey Mr. Healer man, bring me ur heals." "What corner of hell did you end up in now."

I find this usually happens when I unconsciously start getting influenced by other successful stories I like. It's like I want my story to be on par with theirs, but then get lost. That is when I have to dial it down and remember what my story is about (is it plot heavy, character heavy, both), and what genre it's in.

To the guy who asked about how I would implement a game into my comic.

I was thinking 3 optional dungeon crawlers that would feature further information on the world that would be info dumping in a regular narrative. And instead of pokemon like, it's be puzzles and battles like in Golden Sun leading up to a boss battle. I want it to be skipable but fun

Making a story about racism/speciesism, only unlike it's popularly displayed in media, this isn't a "they dindu nuffin" story. I feel that shit is dishonest as fuck and ultimately doesn't do us a lot of good in how shallow and coddling it is. So this will be a story about overcoming racism/speciesism when in reality everyone probably should still retain their bias and hatred.

I don't know, I just feel a happy ending to a story in this setting would have a lot more weight and meaning than "you were just ignorant the whole time!" meme zootopia and the like preach.

Not quite on topic, but anyone hre do that Artsnacks monthly art supply box thing? Normally, I'm not into those blind box subscriptions, but for something like art supplies, it seems like it might be a good way to force yourself to experiment. Is it worth the 24 bucks? Or is it better to just walk into an art supply store with a blindfold and grab a couple things there?
>>
>>93382804
What I usually do is to write the ideas I get as if they were summaries, kinda like what you find on wikis. That is mostly because I write dialogue on the march but it can work for many other methods. It's still a good way to start and later move to actual script writing.
>>

>>
>>93382588
This is what I feel we need more. Good luck on your efforts anon
>>
>>93383764
I wouldn't mind doing it if just to try out a blind box. However, I don't find myself needing anything more than what I already have, I think it'd be a waste of money.
The flyer in the box says what the cost of each item is, and it doesn't seem to match up with the price of the box. Makes sense 'cause yeah, company needs to make a profit somehow.

I'd rather just look for really nice art pieces and see if they use any interesting materials, then try using it for myself.
>>
>>93384140
shockingly honest of them
you'd think they'd do things like this by getting overstock and/or bulk discounts, but then tell you the normal retail price of those items so you felt like you were getting a deal
>>
>>93384140
That's sort of what I figured. I impulse bought a month because Artist and Craftsman gave me ten percent off so we'll see. Last year's inktober one looks fun. I think it'd be worth it if they always included a piece of original art, even if it was from some nobody. I'll probably end up canceling after a month or two, but I might grab Inktober standalone since I do love ink.

One day I'll get the hang of my brush pen and make some kind of zen, minimalist comic adaptation of I Am A Cat.
>>
>>93384466
how much do they give you for 25 bucks? because art supplies are pretty damn expensive.. at least at most of the stores i went to
>>
>>93384602
This was March. Looks like if you know what you're doing, you can definitely get better prices. But these are for people that don't know what they're doing. I'd never even think to buy one of those big pencils, so getting the random assortment seems pretty fun to me. I'm still pretty beginner though.
>>

>>

>Could you elaborate on this? I can't tell if it's brilliant or retarded, it's pretty vague on what you mean. Are you saying that the stereotypes are true, are you saying that there's a reason for the stereotypes, what're you going for?

Sure, I won't spill particular specifics, but I can give a summery.

>On an alien planet two species co-exist together, but to the detriment of one another (one more to the other's, depending on your point of view)
>it's done to some degree of consent because the alternative is much worse and neither species wants that
>had they not existed in this "relationship", neither species would exist at all today
>neither species particularly likes one another, they just "tolerate" the other, and sometimes not even that

This isn't a matter of stereotypes either, it's a matter of fact: any individual of either species would have to be stupid to not show concern around the other, just due to the happenings of day to day life. I will also be sure to frame it in a way that any viewer to this would also feel the same, regardless of which position/side they put themselves in while reading.
After the initial introduction to what this place is and how it works, I was going to have several stories take place here, basically showing the hardships of life, and small instances where the two species are forced to interact. At the end I wanted to make something sweet with two that make friends. Not because they are unique individuals and/or don't fit their roles in this society, but rather despite all that. Basically show that if someone from each species sits down and actually attempts to connect/talk, they can actually have a conversation and even get along IF they try, even if that doesn't change anything about the world or life they live.
>>
>>93385438
yeah i'm buying you a pizza

Haven't made much progress and I haven't posted in a while but I drew this.

He'd overly muscular but I do think he should be buffed up a bit more in the comics. dude should be built like a gymnast.
>>
>>93385407
Thanks,
So the base setting is middle ages but more fantasy middle ages (medicine isnt as gruesome for example, and beastmen and other humanoid other than regular humans exist).

People are born with something special to them like a skill or an ability (reading a book by touching it, being able to see far away by using grass as a medium). This grows with the person as they get better at it or they gain different things.

People can learn different things by trying what works for them (trial by error) or learning from someone else (even if they are really good it's rather difficult since you have to "feel" it in the right way) or by learning from "imprinting stones" found in the "Grand Dungeon" (which are rather rare and usually dropped by the "boss" of a particular set of floors) in the main capital.

This is the main source of income for the capital either by adventurers wanting to find treasure in the endless dungeon of the capital or "imprinting stones" to sell on for dosh at the markets or with the guild they are with.

So pretty much MC and company travel the world and the dungeon and want to be the best adventurer that ever was.

Haven't gotten much beyond this but this is the main idea anyway
>>
>>93385708
why do you think gymnasts have a buff build?
>>
>>93385771
>middle ages but more fantasy middle ages (medicine isnt as gruesome for example
you could always go further back. medicine in the ancient middle east was leaps and bounds ahead of the cliche dark ages europe bloodletting cliche
That's a fun way to do 'everyone has magic' for sure. does the story ever explore why there's an endless dungeon full of infinite money? and how that would destabilize the economy?
>>
>>93386035
>dark ages meme
opinion discarded

I'm not the guy you're replying to, so don't bully him
>>
>>93386236
I'm acknowledging it's a meme, and 80% of what people repeat isn't accurate.. or wasn't for much of it, or for much of the area.
but the main mistaken in that meme is the idea that the further back you go the more primitive people are, when really it was.. just.. there, and then.
also the typical fedora thing, trying to somehow connect it with religion, when like.. the jews were stupendously advanced. and the romans were no slouches either..
>>
>>93386035
The story does go into it but other than a "it just happened a long time ago" is about what the general populace knows as far as the dungeon is concerned.
It is the main source of income for the capital but trade is still a very lucrative business.
Just because the "Grand Dungeon" is open to everyone willing to pay the fee doesnt mean other nations dont have something like it that is open to everyone, they're just more quiet about it.
Other types of cultures are in it as well other than the standard middle ages stuff: Nomanid tribes, eastern civilisations and others.

I have an idea for a story.

It's about a main character who learns to let go of cartoons as a coping mechanism, and instead uses cartoons as an inspiration to create original stories and comics. The main character learns to embrace the real world and to take control over their life, after being confronted by their childhood cartoon crush in a dream. My hope is that it will have the feeling of an intervention, while having the feeling of getting to know a personal hero, someone that was once over-idealized who slowly becomes more and more human as the story goes on.

It's an idea that's close to my heart, so the only thing stopping me from going farther than just sketching characters, has been the fear of poor execution. If done well, I hope the idea will resonate with some people. If done poorly, it might leave the impression of poor marysue tumblr nonsense.

Is this a story that people would want to read? Would this idea resonate with anyone?

The only part of that I understood was using them as inspiration to make original stories and comics.. I'd like a comic about making comics! It sounds cliche but I can't actually think of one

I might revise the second half of the current kind of story board to make it more animated.

I want a way to have the protag chase an animal, while presenting him as being really good at hunting (if he just misses the shot then it would make him look kind of dumb.)
>>
>>93388102
Ooooh that's cool. well in my experience, spiders hunt in a pretty staccato manner. rapid movement punctuated by total stillness. That.. would probably be hard to depict in a comic. Maybe a panel repeated a few times, showing him still, then another where he's just gone

story is a girl who knows what she wants to do in life, but feels stuck because the process is a drag and monotonous at times
Some of my personal experience with art school and the bullshit of it
Other part is being friends with people in a drug/alcohol lifestyle and the waking up partying and sleeping cycle that you need to distance from to grow (not so much her but the environment with her roommates)

It's is humor based though, and just touches on a few little relatable and sometimes serious things that happen in life (sex, substance, school)
Sort of a coming of age story when you in the age of cumming (mid-20's)

Sorry, I realize now that it came out a bit jumbled.

I think everyone has to overcome their own personal struggles. While I think most people try to face the problem head on, some might ignore the problem by getting indulged in a hobby. If it goes unchecked however, a hobby could turn into an obsession.

I think there are a lot of people out there who like to watch cartoons or movies as a form of escapism. It can make people feel better. But I think that cartoons and movies should be treated, not as an escape from reality, but as a way to learn how to cope with reality. I don't think people should ignore their problems. I think they should take in the life lessons cartoons can teach us, and apply them to become stronger individuals.

I want to create a comic that teaches people to face their fears. I want to take a main character who is afraid to live their life (someone who escapes through cartoons), and change them into a character that will be proactive in achieving their personal goals. I want this character to let their love for storytelling and 3-dimensional characters be shown through creating comics of their own, as opposed to indulging in a story someone else created.

Use a normal hosting site meant for hosting comics.
Anyway your comic looks a little dry and the style's... mild? Dunno what else to call it, but it's not going to draw a ton of people in the way familiar fanart does. That's just our nature. If you wanna get viewers, you're going to have to find a way to make it quickly clear what makes it special. If it's drama or something, maybe find a snippet of dialogue that sums up what it's about and .. uh.. put it.. somewhere

CSP Pro is fine if you don't mind working with one page at a time, or for very short animations.
If you're serious about wanting to work on multi-page comics, or long animations, then consider going for EX. Sales come round every few months anyway, so save up and keep an eye out for the next one.

We do need more like that. Oh, there's meta comics, sure, but it's rare that making-the-comic is actually part of the plot, rather than something where you're perpetually let in behind the scenes because the comic is about itself.

At first I thought it would be ok to just buy Pro and later on upgrade to EX if I felt like using the other features but upgrading costs the same as if I bought it on discount in the first place so I will wait and just try the trial version for now just to get used to it. What I'm saying is, I can't think of any webcomic equivalents of Animation Runner Kuromi, where it's an anime about a person in charge of an anime studio, but she isn't making the anime you're watching.

Unfortunately, the only times I've seen these kinds of things, it has the protagonist retreating into some kind of ethereal cosmic backstage to have a monologue (I'm thinking of Asterios Polyp and Cerebus, specifically) rather than several characters involved in some kind of conflict or overcoming obstacles in a (for like of a better term) "meta way".

>>93394813
Sure.
Long story short: Paragon is a Lovecraft-like interdimmensional monster that is inside of a magical suit.
In the backstory of the comic, he was a big shot pirate/marauder/warlord who came in to conflict with a few warriors who defeated him, causing him to lose his power and wealth.

His role in the comic itself is that the main character is a somewhat minor obstacle in a bid for revenge against those who initially defeated him but gradually he and the main character end-up genuinely hating each other and opposing what one another are trying to accomplish. It gets to the point where Paragon sees defeating his old enemies as part of his greater plan to fuck with the main character.
So, overall Paragon is the main villain of the comic. Or at least, he fits the bill of "main villain" the best.

The creek things are a couple of ghouls that live outside the main character's house. He tries to be civil with them but they are both feral and strangely interested in attacking him specifically. All that's really clear about what they are and where they came from is that they were once humans but had some kind of run-in with Paragon.
I wanted to play around with tones in the comic and these two are supposed to be more horror-like villains as opposed to sillier villains like the lizard-eater-guy and the more traditional adventure villains like Paragon.

>>
>>93400651
Depends on whatever you can fit on your scanner and, if you're planning to go to print, the standard paper sizes that printers use in your country.

That said, A4 should be fine, scan them in as high resolution (600dpi or higher).

You can draw on A3, but if you only have an A4 scanner, you'll have to digitally stitch the pages together.

I recycle ideas a lot and design elements or plot points from different projects get switched around or introduced to different concepts if it feels natural. overused is the only legit complaint, except that since it got that reputation, it's now quite underused.
in any case, you do want a sans-serif font. serifs are just so... typewritery. newspapery.

Should I make this character a good guy or bad guy?

Basics:
>He was a god who lost a fight vs an evil god and was sealed away for eons.
>A little girl unwittingly unseals him and "dies" doing so.
>Now he's a spirit who wants his body back to regain full power.
>His body has been reborn (into the MC).
>He jumps into his body, but can't take over and is kicked out by the little girl.
>He gets a new body so he can kill the MC and take over that way.

As bad guy:
>He wants his full power back to take over the world.
>He comes out of hiding with his new body after the MC beats the evil god.
>He answers all the MC's questions about his origins and says that the MC's destiny is to become evil and take over the world, because he's an evil god too.
>The MC believes him and wants to leave the world free of gods and to the true heroes: his friends and all the regular people he met along the way.
>The MC tricks the little girl into leaving.
>The MC lets him jump back into his body, but it's a trick, because he kills them both with a soul merging explosion.
>The little girl comes back to contain the explosion. She dies too, but the shower of her magic heals the planet.

As good guy:
>He is a preincarnation of the MC who failed because he didn't have any friends.
>He has to kill the MC, because he believes that only he is strong enough to defeat the evil god.
>The MC beats him up and shows him that he is stronger because he has friends.
>He agrees and disappears for a long time, but then comes back to fight the evil god so that the MC can get away.
>The MC accepts his friend request.

As a bad guy, he allows a very clean ending, but he's not the appropriate final big bad, because he's only connected to the MC, whereas the evil god has connections to everyone. As a good guy, he's touching character and lets the evil god be the final big bad, but maybe he gives away the biggest spoilers too early and might not allow as clean of an ending.
>>
>>93412302
why does he wants to take over the world?
to me both seem like basic anime plots (even with the girl sacrificing to save the world madoka style)
I mean how can you make a character without knowing it's role on the story, you are describing two totally different characters
>>
>>93412302
That is not only fucking awesome, it's just like a JRPG or two I can think of, except with a more interesting twist. Namely getting kicked out by the little girl.
If he really wants to kill her, he'd better be an evil god. but if he just wants petty revenge, he can be an angry but basically-good god.
Wait, did I get confused, the little girl isnt the main character? because that's how I'd do it. Died in the process of reviving the god, revived by the god, then evicted the possession. You could call it like I Won't Be Your Avatar

I don't understand that other scenario shit, why would a god be a ... "preincarnation"? Why would killing him accomplish anything?
>>
>>93412302
Why don't do both?

It may sound cliché as all hell but the way you describe them so differently as bad guy and good guy, you could play some duality in there.
>>
>>93413501

>basic anime plots
Those are what inspire me, so that's what they are. I haven't seen Madoka though, just stuff from when I was a kid.

>why does he wants to take over the world?
All the gods do. Getting power is what makes them happy. That's how they were raised by the other gods. That's another one of my issues with him being a bad guy. It gives me 2 big bads with lame because-he's-evil motivations instead of just 1.

>I mean how can you make a character without knowing it's role on the story
I originally made him as a bad guy, but I started having doubts. The good guy is a rewrite that I like and works so far.

>>93412567
>the little girl isnt the main character?
That's right. The MC is NOT the little girl. The little girl got turned into a magical spirit when she "died". She was drawn to the god's vacant body, and when she settled inside it, it was reborn into the MC. He's her little brother, and she lives in his heart and protects him.

>why would a god be a ... "preincarnation"
>>93413638
>you could play some duality in there.
I'm doing this thing where the MC is a god born on Earth and raised by regular people who taught him kindness and friendship as the key to happiness. As a good guy, my character would be born on Earth too, except maybe he didn't have as lucky of an upbringing, hence he's MC 1.0 or a preincarnation. As a bad guy, he was born in the god world and raised by the other gods who taught him power was the key to happiness, so he's the MC raised by gods instead of people, hence some duality going on.
>>
>>93414471
Well my story is more structured into a "season" format, though I only have actual work done for what you might call "season 1".

With that in mind...

https://youtu.be/DXP1KdZX4io

I still don't have it down pat but the idea is to have the main protag confront the darkness underpinning the town, and basically get saved by her mysterious ties to another hinted at yet previously unseen being, while the side heroes deal with the main villain of the arc, a spoiled brat who was manipulated by the actual villains into trying to mindrape the heroes and basically keep them out of the picture.

I imagined the scene of the good guy saving the MC here >>93412302 to the tune of the Exodia theme. You'll see why! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_-VhrGJerA

[no Exodia theme yet. wait.]
>The evil god in his enormous final form has MC & friends trapped on the ground. He's gonna get them, but just then, Good Guy flies in to save the day.
>Good Guy is in the air, eyes fixed on the evil god, wielding his staff, and standing between him and our heroes. He is gonna hold the line so that MC & friends can escape!
>The friends escape, but MC stays.
>Good Guy, with his back turned to MC, asks him to accept his friendship as if tearing off a bandaid.
>MC accepts.
>Good Guy closes his eyes and blushes, having made his first friend. He thanks the MC and tells him to get lost before he changes his mind.
>MC flies up into the air, shouts at his new friend to live, and flies off.
>In his head, Good Guy tells his soldiers he is setting them free and asks them to be kind. He opens his eyes and raises his staff.
>The evil god goes "huh?".
>Good Guy shouts the magic words to summon the 5 pieces of the great demon.
[Exodia theme starts playing - first swell 0:01]
>The 5 pieces summon, form the great demon, and give the evil god a good whack.
>The evil god is shocked that Good Guy could summon a being so powerful and fears that he's dealing with a god.
[Exodia theme keeps playing - second swell 0:41]
>A glory shot of Good Guy in the air looking godly and wielding his staff.
>Good Guy winds his staff back and lunges at the evil god.
>The evil god, in full panic mode, screams.
>Good Guy swings at the evil god with all his might.
>The two and the great demon disappear into battle dust.
>One character of the main cast who has been watching from afar wonders if the evil god has been beaten.
>END SCENE

So, would you guys call this a homage or rip off?

Well, I'm drunk. So I'm here.
The Sisters updated: http://thesisters-comic.com/
This week, Erin and Dan try to come to terms about how she's clearly keeping secrets and that lead to her car exploding. Of course, nothing good can come of this.

Next week: Aethon finally gets how things work now.
We're on our finale issue for our second arc; though there will be a little epilogue mini with the kids finally going to the anime convention Chel's been rambling about all this arc. Then we pick up immediately with Winter.

I'm not disappointed with how the second arc has been going, but it hits a lot of issues I have with other things; it sets up future things more than it delivers on its own conflict. Very much our Fool Moon; though I really liked that one. But it ain't Grave Peril, that's for fucking sure.

Had it in mind, first arc and hitting second arc climax moments soon.
Got future ones down in mind, because I have a specific musical tone in mind for my comic. Which is really colored by nostalgia and figures from the past.

We considered doing more subtle bullshit, but it felt more appropriate to actually see him given that he's going to be doing stuff this issue. He's a longer term antagonist, and given how much his actions colored Conrad's desperation and Aethon's already palpable hatred for humanity; just felt like we ought to introduce him buck-naked and fresh from the corpse pile.

But setting stuff up shouldn't come at the cost of things in the current story. This arc was supposed to be a lot about things crashing down, but really it became about how the secrets the girls keep poisoning those around them; which is a slight retread of the first arc where that led to Conrad's violent spiraling out. I like how the Society has managed to have a slow death, and how it has crumbled quite a bit; Scott's legacy is marred; but Guy has had a bit too much screen time--often with Beatrice, but Beatrice needs more central stage being a main character; and she gets some of that this issue.

Next arc will be better, it gets to use some of the set-up here and it'll be a nice change in color palette to hit winter cools after a musty spring and a red summer hot. The Green Book, Liam's opus that Eddy had a draft of, becomes relevant; Beatrice tries to be a better person, Jam finds clarity of purpose, and there's a more direct antagonist to the crew as a whole. It also isn't directly a corruption narrative, because shit if that ain't my life and shit if that ain't what things turn out to be so damn often when I write.

Glad you're reading it though Anon, hope you're enjoying it. I'm gonna fucking pass out though, so best of luck in your endeavors.

You're absolutely right, thanks anon. English isn't my first language.

As for why I'll only use one: chapter limitations. I got like what, 30 pages for this chapter, maybe 35. Gotta keep that plot moving.
The sorcerer appears in chapter 3 and for chapter 4 the location changes and I need to keep the focus on the MC. If we get past chapter 6 maybe he'll get a second appearance or I'll intoduce more sorcerer characters and I can give some spare designs and concepts from chapter 3 to them...

So, which do you prefer? I'm about to flip a coin here.

There are plenty of situations i can come up with where the mail would bes more useful, though. Keep in mind, I'm not doing a battle or action comic where you need a sophisticated battle system or anything like that. I just need a scene where magic is used as a weapon.
>>
>>93425353
yeah exactly, and armor isn't a weapon. If he has literally only one spell, it had better be more versatile than that.
Unless he's some kind of kung fu wizard and the scales make his fists as hard as diamonds.
>I'm not doing a battle or action comic where you need a sophisticated battle system or anything like that. I just need a scene where magic is used as a weapon.
so.. he's literally just going to be in one scene? Because it SOUNDS like a battle or action comic.

>it SOUNDS like a battle or action comic

You got me. I have a strong predisposition for action comics so even my non-action comics have usually a few elements or scenes like that. I'll leave the context ambigous though which works fine scince the character is literally using magic. The character is going to be the centerpiece for chapter 3 but not the focus of the comic. There's a lot of ground to cover so the first couple of chapters are going to be relatively self-contained stories with changing locations and characters (except MC).

its not exactly a web comic but im working on an illustrated story.
here are three pictures, despite my lack of skills I'm having trouble settling an art style.
I was going for a slightly cartoony style but a painted feel. It's turned out messy as you can see.
>>
>>93426852
it's a little messy but I think you can totally get away with this painting style and backgrounds. Your only issue here is the anatomy that's wonky even within the cartoony style, such as mismatched eyes and arms and poor posture

yes the wonkyness is not good. I'll have to practice that, I've done some 3d modeling in the past and actually considered creating a model and rigging it so I can put it in poses and use as a reference.

The bottom left being the better one I've done, although when painting it I remember it taking it a long time. I was using photoshop to paint layers of shading and then putting them low transparency. I guess I should also develop a work flow.

I replaced the first panel at the last minute, still not super-happy with it. The color of the blasts from the robots is the same as the rockets on their armored suits, and in the first version there was just a lot of yellow things everywhere. I went with a side/rear view so the rockets would be more noticed.

Maybe I should have combined the word bubbles in the last panel and put them both on the bottom.

The story: the two superheroines here continue daily training. They have to avoid getting hit by the robots without attacking them. The brunette (the lead) is distracted by events on previous pages. I tried to make the blonde more prominent to help the idea that the brunette is just going through the motions.

I believe you. It's just the setting, the characters, the concept, the whole aesthetic, even some of the pages like when Pierce (?) stabs his female colleague with a long sword in the back and through the chest just scream Bleach in your face.
Maybe once you finished Vigor Mortis take a day and read Bleach from start to finish and you'll see where people are coming from.

It's totally possible that people all over the globe come up with very similar pieces of art without ever having been in contact. I speak from experience: I've had plenty of designs and concepts I scrapped because: this already exists? Well, shit.

At the end of chapter 3 the sorcerer gets stabbed (MC makes her escape) and his blood rains down from his flying vessel and where it drenches the ground a kind of forest grows.
I really like this idea but it doesn't really connect with the plot and putting it at the end of the chapter would seem like a cliffhanger or at least imply that it will be relevant later. So I'm currently contemplating to make it into a short epilogue, maybe two pages. What do you think?

I'm having a hard time shaking the notion that webcomics and long-form stories aren't compatible in any way, shape, or form. If it takes nearly a decade for you to roll out your comic page by page, and you're telling a story you've planned out at least roughly, the fact that 10 years will pass in real time while your story inches along over the span of that timeframe in a preserved bottleneck of fictitious time will lead to vast gulfs of discrepancy between reality and your fiction. Your art visibly improving to the point where the first hundred or so pages are hard to look at is a more benign example of what can go wrong. On the other end of the spectrum, you have creator burnout, your fandom getting burnt out and reduced in size over time (sometimes you can take long enough to draw in a new, but smaller, fandom, and rinse and repeat), and other works by professional teams of productive people doing this for a living telling a story similar to yours in a much more satisfying and well-paced way.

Has there ever been a story-driven webcomic that you were able to stick with from page one to the ending, as it updated?
>>
>>93428316
looks like a good scan to me
>>93428430
you basically just explained why comics DO go with longform
>>
>>93428430
This is a very prevalent problem in manga, too. Manga are generally a lot more-long running. It can work when story just grows organically and is allowed to stray a bit at times like, say, the first 10 or so years of one piece and hxh, but you're right.

I don't feel it's that much of a problem for webcomics because the overwhelming majority of them dies long before you fell any such effect.
>>
>>93428430
IMO best stories are the shortest ones, like movies, short, powerful but not over sized
this is of course a bigger challenge to an author since he must come up with lots of good different stories to work
>>
>>93428530
I did? I don't understand.
>>93428544
Very true, and that's another problem altogether.
>>
>>93428430

I think this is only true if;

1) The creator isn't motivated enough to finish it in the first place

2) The creator is a bad artists at the start

3) You do a page by page update weekly/monthly update

If you have decent skill, dedication, and you are capable of posting several pages or whole chapters on a monthly or weekly basis, you'll have more success.

Of course none of this is guaranteed.

I was gonna do something like this but with the concept of media scapegoating. The story would go that a town is having health problems that comes from really shitty water, and while the answer is obvious with a little bit of digging, their is a paper company that blames the whole thing on one guy. Long story short the entire town ends up killing him in a mob and then feel awful when the problem gets worse months later.

>>
>>93429299
Yeah, sure. There's plenty examples. But usually it's a very talented director (like David Fincher) turning a mediocre source (Gone Girl) into a great film.

It's very difficult with accomplished works of literature, though. The LoTR films (especially the first) are great adaptations and the changes they made from the book made a lot of sense in the context of film as a medium but you could still argue (as many do) that the film can't hold its own in a comparison taken at face value...
>>
>>93429585
That would come across as silly in a modern setting unless the circumstances are extraordinary like during a time of extreme crisis.
In the context of your story it would make a lot more sense if some of the townsfolk form a more extreme group and then one of the more impressionable or psychologically instable members goes and kills the guy on his own and the town has to deal with the guilt...

Good humor? (I mean we like it, so whatever haha)

Our characters are original and don't feel like fan characters that belong to other works.

what do you guys feel is the line between "inspired/influenced by" and "derivative"?
>>
>>93441917
It's one of those things like 'art' that just has to be understood.. yet there's no one way or the other, with most of us. we understand exactly what is and isn't a ripoff.
Derivative is good though. It's definitely on the good side of the 'inspiration - influence - homage - derivative - cliche - copycat - ripoff' spectrum
.. which I guess isn't symmetrical, because that would put it in the middle.
if you need a rule of thumb though, if you're seemingly trying to hide it, or doing something that seems very different once it's found out, you're probably not doing it right

Does anybody find they subconsciously have reoccuring themes/narrative elements in their works? A number of my stories feature the protagonist looking for something only to never find it as whatever they're searching for is long gone, never existed, and/or actively toxic to their well-being to keep searching for and they realize they can't stay stuck searching for something they cant find and move on with their lives, and I feel its cropping up enough to be concerningly predictable and I'm going to have to reevaluate my shit.
>>
>>93443400
Anon, if that narrative means something to you then you should absolutely explore it, turn your comic into a moral story, sit down and think on these themes, not just pertaining to your comic, but to your life as a whole. Every story has already been told, every narrative has already been explored, might as well add your own 2 cents to the pile
>>
>>93443400
>Does anybody find they subconsciously have reoccuring themes/narrative elements in their works?

Boy yes. I have noticed lately that I have a lot of characters that lose their lovers because of some greater evil and go with the immortal route to avenge them. The exact way it happens and the result is different though (two are legit good guys all along with one just being one-sided gay love, one pretends to be on the evil guys' side and was the only reciprocal-gay in the bunch , one turned evil and insane while also being the only girl with the archetype and the last one was an "incomplete version" who was on the evil team from the very beginning and wanted to reach immortality for other motives, but the death of his lover twisted him even more, he dies before the story happens but later gets "brain downloaded" to be used as a pawn but he goes with his own route...). But then again, I have told many people that execution is all what matters with stories, and you should try that as well with your stories. They may follow a similar theme but you can explore the many endings they can get.

Do you guys ever find yourself autistically researching random concepts/history/ people to pick apart and add to your comic?

For example i've been researching occultism/religion/fallen empires just to help mold background lore, i'm definitely enjoying it but I feel like it may be a bit much for a webcomic

Side question: Do you ever think there will come a point where Webcomics are treated with the same reverence as traditional comics?
>>
>>93443694
>Do you guys ever find yourself autistically researching random concepts/history/ people to pick apart and add to your comic?

Everytime. I even go as far as to search name meanings that may suit a character or search for famous -and not so famous- people on the character's field to take the name from. While it's nice and all to search to add every detail of perfection to a story, I find that it is the main reason why I also never get going with anything.

>Do you ever think there will come a point where Webcomics are treated with the same reverence as traditional comics?
I think we are not too different from doujins in a way, besides seems webcomics are getting more and more attention if webtoons (the korean webcomics I mean) and other nip stuff are any indication. Sure there are many trashy webcomics around the web but it's the same with every media ever.

>Do you guys ever find yourself autistically researching random concepts/history/ people to pick apart and add to your comic?

yeah, nowadays they tend to be of a specific focus like specific aspects of military campaigns and combat doctrine, but i try my damndest these days to avoid getting too wrapped up in it and only put it in the story when applicable. i feel that overthinking and overwriting are why a lot of people tend to not even get projects off the ground.

>Side question: Do you ever think there will come a point where Webcomics are treated with the same reverence as traditional comics?

it's hard to say since the medium is very easy to get into, and the near lack of a barrier for entry from the get go makes it hard to wade through the bad for the good, and even then, good webcomics just seem to just die, leaving readers to leave what could have been something good in the dust to move on to the next.

It's practically impossible to find an artist over the internet unless you're willing to pay him/her.
If you're still at college or know some artists in your personal life you have a chance.
Definitely don't try in hyw all you're going to do is get "*sent :^)" replies and start stupid artist vs writer arguments.

Personally, I'd recommend you to just find people you know can draw and talk to them irl, eventually you'll find someone who's willing to collaborate if you get lucky. If you're really dedicated, also make a workmap and go to comic conventions and just speak to small time artists directly. Good luck.

The average quality of webcomics is much lower than traditional comics because there are no editorial hurdles. Maybe if the internet becomes even more prevalent webcomics will reach similar popularity and exposure. But they'll never be as respected as comics which, in turn, never gained the same respect as other 20th century artforms like film.

Her mom passed shortly thereafter, leaving her with the reigns of the new regime. She's far too inexperienced, and childish to understand how to maneuver in the political realm properly, and her allegedly divine inheritance means she's used to getting what she wants and not being questioned - while her mother may have been equipped to smooth over relations with their neighboring territories (who still follow the Old Faith and have slowed trade in response), she doesn't think they're worth negotiating with and is primed to start a campaign of conquest in response to their perceived disrespect.

This is a facinating backstory put to waste on a villain with boring endgame goals and no real stated character.

Motivation is important not because "muh moral greyness" but because motivation is what drives every other part of the character. No motivation, no plot. So when the motive is so vague it can justify the character doing anything, the character looses focus and becomes a slave to the narrative.

>>93455150
Interesting concepts, no clue about what the characters do other than survive, but these characters seem more like pieces of the setting than actual opposing forces in their own right so it works. They are part of nature, their motive is just their inherent nature.

>>93455817
The Bad Guy route is very JRPG ish, but in a bad way. A last second plot twist that detracts from the weight of the actual final battle and really ony exists to introduce a lot of plot points to resolve them seconds after the final final battle.

Perhaps make That Guy the last "party member" the MC gains. The MC beats the shit out of That Guy, they run into TG later in the same endgame "level", despairing because their only purpose for living just told them to fuck off. The MC uses friendship-no-jitsu one last time and they join the party.

The shapeshifter has a hard-on for creating and becoming prominent historical figures, he subtlety coaxing other wizards into achieving great things then BAM, takes their place and reaps in the glory. it helps to know my MC is a prominent rising wizard

The Corpse Man works for the shapeshifter and is locked in a century long cat and mouse game with the Baba Yaga, and she in turn is tied to one of the protagonist through means of those malevolent "Monkeys Paw" deals you tend to see in witch folklore

Hope i'm not blogging about this too much

Don't do it. Release the chapters three times a week instead. Nobody will remember to check your comic each month. Webcomic readers are used to checking back often and if they see there's nothing there after a week or two of checking they'll leave. If you have enough chapters to upload one a month you have a huge backlog and can have frequent updates which is much better.
>>
>>93460217
This, and nobody has time to sit and read 25-40 pages in a sitting
at LEAST break it up into 10-page update chunks, at LEAST. ideally, 3-5 page update chunks.
that said, if you even think you can get that many pages done a month, i mean shit.

>>93461106
oh no, that's not only fine it's reccommended. A lot of people prefer having a substantial but quickly-binged backlog when they first find a comic. If they find it and it only has like one page, they're going to bookmark it and forget about it, if they even DO bookmark. If it has hundreds, they might suffer archive panic and decide it's impossible to catch up (or check out random pages from the archive to see if it's worth it, and accidentally spoil themselves)
but a nice, like, appetizer.. is perfect. Something you can settle into then it leaves you wanting more.

> This is a facinating backstory put to waste on a villain with boring endgame goals and no real stated character.

Yeah he is kind of a serious menace early in the story because he is the main source of all war tech on a bigger conflict since he doesn't have reasons to side with anybody, he is just in for profit and because "fuck it is not like there are good side anyway". He is an early stage villain if you will, because his level gets dropped to the floor later when bigger fishes come to scene it just happens he is the more developed one I have at the moment and thats why I shared it

what makes you stop reading a comic on its first few pages?

>wah why won't DA make me popular??
Perhaps what you need is a REALITY CHECK. That comic looks like boring shit. If you want people to read it then you need to find the right people and market it to them. The right people in this case being self hating edgy undeveloped middle aged emo fags who think they're super deep and cool for smoking and wearing cut up black pants.

Even the people responding here seem to act like it's all DA's fault that you aren't getting views, but that's what you get when you post in hugboxes; nobody says the truth. That said relying on 1 website alone isn't a good idea if you want to get your comic out there, each major website has tons of people who use that site only and nothing else.

I see no appeal in that comic, the whole page is basically "wow look at how smart and deep I am". The art quality isn't good enough to fill any of the gaps either.

If I decide to have a SFW Tumblr and a NSFW Tumblr, should I make it two separate accounts?
Can I just have them as two different blogs on one account without my SFW Tumblr being blocked from searches because the other one's porn?

And slightly unrelated; What's the best way to make sure an artist sees fanart you draw for them? Should I just direct message them? Tag them in a Tweet and hope they actually see that shit? I assume sending it to them in as many ways as possible would just annoy them, but I also don't want to spend my time doing it if they won't even see it.
>>
>>93464995
You can set up a secondary tumblr by going to account settings -> create a new blog. It can be set to NSFW without affecting the main SFW blog.

https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/226340048-Primary-vs-secondary-blogs

For extra separation though, you may want to create an enirely separate tumblr using a different email address.

Nice, that's what I wanted to know.

I'm trying to flesh out the plot for my first story arc, but it doesn't really feel right.

The plot as I have it is that it's a cat and dog detective team. The cat, Detective John Critowski, is approached by a stray who needs help finding her missing kittens. After a bit of detective work and tracking, the clues lead them to a fox den on the outskirts of town. They scare the fox off, but don't find any kittens, and don't think the kittens were ever even there. When they go to confront the stray, she admits that there never were any kittens and that she needed the fox driven off for... and that's where I'm struggling.

My initial idea was that the fox set up its den near a dumpster that the stray was raiding to feed her own kittens, but then why would she lie if kittens really did need help, and why couldn't she find another dumpster? My other thought, which is what I'm leaning towards, is that the fox stole something of hers - maybe a memento from the owner that abandoned her? She didn't want to show her soft side since caring for humans is frowned upon on the streets, and she didn't think the pair would want to risk their lives for something like that, maybe?

I feel like I'm almost there, but something's still missing, or I need another angle on it or something.
>>
>>93465645
maybe the fox is just an asshole
>>
>>93399972

We tried this at the beginning, and honestly it didn't work out well for us.We were doing a 20` page chapter a month and updates were too slow for people to care. Although it was better for story telling, it also lead to some creative burnout.

We ended up spreading out the pages a bit, 10~ every two weeks. The same amount of content, but it was easier on us, and we noticed more reader interaction.

We should probably post even more often, but we're still working out exactly what it is we want. It's our first webcomic so we're winging it.

tl;dr: As someone who tried this, we don't recommend it, however if it is what you want to do, then that's all that matters. Because the amount of fulfillment/joy you get out of your own work will ultimately be what makes it or breaks it IMO.

>>
>>93470414
My goal is to capture the essence of the introduction narrative found in Patlabor, "what if we depended on giant robots as a means of development."

In Kinematic I want to talk about the development of rudimentary AI and how society is adapting to it in the work force. I want it to be a recurring topic in the background while Nina and Clara are discovering all its effects throughout the narrative. some people are all in for it and some are not.

Nina isn't necessarily fond of them, she sees the benefit, but at the same time she doesn't see herself interacting with them at a daily basis. this is why shes so awkward with it because she doesn't know how to address it.

so far I think a public transportation scene would be good because it introduces her limitations in a relatable inconvenience without seeming cliche.

If you create two tumblrs under one account it will depend which one is made first and set to the "main" account or something. For example your first account will be the one that follows things and all of the posts by people who follow will be in that dashboard. You can reblog and post comments from the second blog but there's a chance you may forget to switch it. If your NSFW blog is the one you made first it will show up in people's follows. So if you really want to separate them I suggest making two accounts. I don't know if you can change the order of blogs.

you need to post with consistency in mind, content wise and time wise. make a schedule, do these things and people will come. without commitment you wont be receiving it any of it back. research what tags are popular and participate. also, you have to curate your posts. it all has to have a cohesive message. that is "your branding."

Fuck really? I'm on episode 5 so far and it has been a fun ride so far. When it begins to go downhill?

I wish I could be as prolific with my writing.

Can I bother you with a couple of questions though? Like, for the short novel you have online and the future episodic story, do you have any ad revenue or something like that? I want to do webcomics but I find some of my stories would maybe work better as writing-only and maybe move more on that area.

Friend of mine has been working on this for a good bit now. I don't know shit about webcomics so I can't offer any good advice.

Right now any of my profit is from patreon which then gets poured into my collaborations and the like. I pour about 60% of what I make into my collaborators, and some months it's 100%.

The novel is part of a larger collection I want to put together. Right now it's free to read but once the two accompanying short stories are done I will be packaging them together as an ebook.

Episodic story should be 20-25 page short stories with some accompanying illustrations I plan on selling for $2 or so. I have worked out a narrative system that should allow for some fairly regular output.

I have another novella that is just about done as well, I am just stuck on the ending at the moment.

All of this stuff is based on the setting of the webcomic. I have a site for the prose archive alone, but I plan and converting most of that content into downloadables and such.

Keep in mind that all this is happening while I am working my job and doing my summer research for my thesis. I don't sleep a lot and I am probably going a little bit insane. I'm taking advantage of this time while I can because I teach my first college class in the fall and expect it's going to eat into my schedule big time.

lol no, unless you're a furry (maybe). Art is way more valuable in this sense.

I don't know exactly when but probably right around there. Whenever Mamika goes nuclear.

Sketch people in class, like every class. Junior high through college all of my notebooks have sketches everywhere. By the time my art teachers were teaching me anatomy and proportion I already had it figured out.

It's a matter of repetition and also if you have good observational skills. Some people also just memorize how the proportions of the face rest at every angle. Whatever works for you.

Well damn anon, good luck on everything there! And thanks for the info, gives me a better idea of where I can go once I stopped sitting on my ass and start actually being more productive.

>once I stopped

and there goes any credibility I may have had, meant it in present.

I keep using the excuse that I teach full time and that's why I never get past a few pages of making a webcomic, but reality is setting in.

did he actually forget his name?
why do I like this so much

I've wanted to start a webcomic nearly all my life but never had the confidence in my art or my ability to write anything decent. I have someone who can write and has a good idea I think, but I'm not sure how to start. How did you guys start your comics or ideas?
>>
>>93477847

You start by just starting it. No magic solution. You write/draw a page, see how it turns out and either learns as you move forward or spend forever constantly reworking the same material.
>>
>>93477379
you need to cut something else out and trade it for more sleep, man. try social life.
>>
>bump limit

ok I will redo the materials post and bake a new bread, I have an idea for OP pic so please wait a bit

Well I'm conflicted with how I should go about it. I'm going to make some character concepts for the writer to see if they like what I come up with, but most web comics I see have a simple but stylish look to them. Should I try for something that looks less serious? I've been told that's the best for web comics because it makes updating frequently easier to do.
>>
>>93478008
Bruh, the more time you spend thinking about it the less practice you actually get in. Do a bunch of minis and one offs and see what sticks.
>>
>>93478008
Do whatever you want. It's not about other people's ideas. And if you're going to have a writer you better make sure they're on board for how long this is going to be.

Sorry I couldn't resist
