The interesting thing to me would be literal gender bending with the main character having to continue to pretend to be male.
Doesn't send a progressive message though since that actually isn't a choice.
You could inversely have a girl who gets gender bent into literally being a woman trapped in a mans body, but again it is not a choice.

It doesn't make the news. The population has a suicide and IV drug use rate worse than combat veterans. And there's loads of sex workers in the community. And the trans violence stats include trans on trans violence.

But california alone has something in the neighborhood of 500 incarcerated prisoners on hormones of in line for surgery. Some of them for homicide/ manslaughter.
