I think it crowd fighting worked in AoU with 6 characters and faceless goons, and sort of worked with 12 characters in CW (although they broke them up into groups pretty fast) but putting 30 people into frame for an action scene in any meaningful fashion seems pretty daunting.

I liked the Civil War fight scene.
It might not have been the most awesome looking set, but the fight itself was creative and well filmed. They chose an almost empty field, so that the action and all the wildly different powers wouldn't be obscured by the surrounding.

And lets not forget that the epic confrontation between Batman and Superman happened in a gray, abandoned factory and a dirty bathroom, filmed in Snyder's patented murk-o-vision
