Mission Hill did a gay men couple right first, at least from what I can remember. They werent just gay guys being gay and constantly fighting for gay rights, they were a gay couple that fit well into their community.

I also thought Shoreleave was an awesome gay charachter. Fun, funny, actioney, and his sexuality isn't his driving forcce.

I get the same feeling from Clyde's dads. Their sexuality is a piece of their charachter that's only secondarily important, if not even tertiarily important. I would think that's the kind of representation homosexuals want; normal everyday lives.

My only real gripe with them is that they seem to be overly perfect, over-acheivers though. Beyond that, I like them a lot more than I like Clyde.

I think this is one of the reason's lesbians have failed so bad. It always seems like lesbos have to predatorily steal women from men, or seduce women into becoming gay, instead of just being normal people in their community.

Having characters who are hamfisted into stories with zero depth or characterization besides their label bothers me, especially when it's called praiseworthy for fulfilling some quota of "diversity."
If I was so invested in my sexual identity, I would find it pretty insulting that so many content creators think they can put a token in, check off my box on their diversity checklist, and be so praised and rewarded, even called "brave" for releasing their half-assed shit to the circlejerk.

Speaking of "moe anime" it says a lot that the Japanese consider homosexuality as a childish phase that is almost universally mocked yet still produce many more relatable and sympathetic gay characters, even among those whose sexuality is completely played for laughs.

For example, Disney recharacterized LeFou from "Beauty and the Beast" as a homosexual and made a point of promoting this fact before the movie because ~diversity~ drives up hype. However, the actual extent of this in the film is gay euphemisms and a longing look or two, with no real impact on the story or the character. If anything, it seems like the homosexual overtones are meant to enhance the character's status as a weak side-kick to the hypermasculine Gaston and reinforce his comic relief nature, which seems like pretty damn poor representation to me. Hardly worthy of praise to just rewrite a character as gay for ~diversity~ points and on top of that just make them a pure stereotype.

Contrast with another Disney property, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, which also got quite a lot of media attention for portraying several kissing gay couples in a children's cartoon. The scene in question was not promoted beforehand, and just part of a much more significant moment in the episode. Unlike the "hamfisted" example above, it was not ~diversity~ for the sake of attention nor did it express them as stereotypes, it simply portrayed the reality that some people are gay and they also have lovers and go on dates, particularly at boy band concerts in SoCal.
The show also has a gay/bisexual girl who explicitly has a romantic crush on the main character, and while she's largely a "stalker with a crush" joke character, the show does not treat her as someone to be mocked unlike LeFou, and the main character remains friendly and supportive of her despite her intense, incompatible affection.
