He's had a crush on her long before that could be a factor, truthfully said that it's the "idea of her" he's been obsessed with at the sleepover, and sex with her would have to be on his mind for it to be physical attraction, but the backyard scene in Starcrushed doesn't really allow that. She's super chill. She has a personality, is into her own thing (skating).

Every time Marco spills his spaghetti, she doesn't let it bother her, and usually tells him to relax.

She's not threatened by Star, even when she clearly should be. She doesn't try to wedge Marco and Star's relationship, or undermine Star behind her back, or try to mark her territory by slutting up to Marco.

I think you can make a pretty good argument that Jackie is cool and mature to an unrealistic degree. It's not difficult at all to se why she appeals to the socially inept manchildren that populate /co or 4chan in general.

Let's face it, there are a lot of male fans who only care about whether a design is hot even if the "character" literally has no personality, and nothing can change that. But characters like Lord Dominator and Azula had a ton of straight female fans, too, who thought they were funny or interesting villains, so not good examples of characters people only care about because of their appearance like some characters in this thread.

the other anons put it well when they said Jackie's 'personality' is a super-idealized waifu who basically isn't human and that's why she appeals to the socially inept manchildren. She's always happy, accomodating, conciliatory, and forgiving. She never strongly expresses emotions like sadness, disappointment, anger, or jealousy and is a pushover. She goes out with someone with a crush on her who she isn't initially interested in on a whim and gets super into it, putting in a massive effort to connect where Marco's not and doesn't complain about his inattentiveness. She's supportive but expects no emotional support back. She's passive, non-assertive, and seems to have almost no agency or desires of her own. She finds awkwardness endearing and doesn't ever find infatuation or being pursued creepy.
I'm not a fan of Jackie, but I DO want to see her side, so there would BE a reason to be a fan bc as of now there's so little development to like. She has no real interests of note (skateboarding? And "history books?" Really?) and no other characters who are shown to be important to her or have a strong relationship with her. Who're her friends? Star and Janna? Does she have a family? She never makes a
decision that contributes to the plot, other than being for Nefcy a plot device to cause emotional drama for Star and make the Starco endgame more rewarding.

Given how much screentime as she's had and as interesting as her design is, people want there to be more to her than it seems or for her to be relevant. That's why they come up with things like "Jackie's a mermaid." They're fans of her not because of the potential development they HOPE she'll get.

That's not really fair, there's been no reason to give her a fleshed out side before starcrushed. She is an accessory of Marco as of this point and is viewed almost entirely from his perspective, sometimes Stars. Her fanbase increased because of perceived potential in spite of this role, and people are waiting for the episode where that role can be broken.

Her screentime is also overstated. She was only important in like 5 episodes of season 2, and given the limits placed on her she used her time pretty well.

If Janna shows personality and contributes to the plot of episodes, adventures and the overall plot all the time, I don't see why there'd be no reason to give Jackie a fleshed out side before Starcrushed unless her entire purpose is to be a love interest. In almost every Jackie episode, she has less development, agency, and plot impact than Janna, excepting Just Friends and Starcrushed. BBtBC is the only episode where Jackie really contributes to the plot, and just the Jarco subplot. It's even in terms of character, e.g. in Sleepover even though the game they're playing is about telling embarrassing secrets, we learn nothing about her, unlike Star, Janna, and Marco. In the same amount of screentime Janna just gets more development, because many of the episodes Jackie appears in her entire role is Marco pursuing her and reacting to him.

Maybe I'm being too dismissive of her appearances in the show but I really hope she's more than just a decoy love interest too. It'd be a letdown if she was.

For a minor character at first them having no personality is ok or if they're a plot device but eventually if they never get anything that makes them feel alive it crosses the line into blah writing.

That's why I don't think it's true the appeal of Jackie is that she's mature (even if she's WAY more mature than Star/Janna/Marco). Considering how people really started getting on her train in BBtBC, the one episode that actually put any effort into giving her some life besides reactionary, one season and a half later, it's understandable. And even then, that was really to have them become closer and for Star to get her own feelings to awaken
