Personally, it just feels like a cop-out answer so he can avoid answering questions about things that have never been set in stone by Nefcy/storyboarders. That's why he just pivots to listing things that we saw happen in the episode, it's just him falling back to obviously canon details. But that's just my own interpretation.

I think Toffee does have a motive due to how specific his plans are, but while he may have had some unjust shit in his past I think he's not gonna be played as tragic or redeemable. Like whatever his original goals were, he went past being justified long ago-- or if not then, definitely at the time he more or less mass-murdered Ludo's army.

Doubt Eclipsa will be evil, or at least if not "good" not someone to be defeated either. Though I think Toffee does have history with her and/or expects her to be on his side, but she won't be. I think Star will train under her for a bit.

I want Eclipsa to be Star's mentor rather a villain, maybe not totally evil or good but morally gray and specializing in dark magic, but I haven't considered where she'd really fit into the plot.

Possibly since she left Mewni in the first place she wouldn't want anything to do with it (and moreso since the MHC imprisoned her), and so would either want Star to work against it or try to rebuild it for the sake of the monsters. Or totally go for the monsters' cause. That could still happen if she's Queen though.

Don't think she'll actually be on Toffee's side, though he might her want to be, though not working against him either (that's up to Star).

Toffee isn't a tragic villain and hasn't displayed a single sympathetic or otherwise redeeming quality after two seasons. He's clearly being set up as the definitive BBEG of the series.
Eclipsa on the other hand is definitely being set up to be a lesser evil at worst.

I predict that by Season 4 (or even earlier) the major players on Mewni will be Toffee's army of monsters, a monster Resistance/peace faction led by Eclipsa and Buff Frog, and the general Mewman/anti-Toffee coalition headed by Moon.
Star and Marco's party would obviously be under Moon's banner, but become increasingly sympathetic to Eclipsa's cause, and Star will eventually accept her as a mentor to develop and control her magic with spells that Moon can't or won't teach her.

As long as the show keeps running, it never will. It's Area's cashcow, her Patreon pledges jumped from $180/mo. when it began a year ago to $2370/mo. now (and that's not even counting increased commissions from exposure).

That's why she's drawn it out this long, and why she'll continue drawing it out instead of finishing it. It took 70 pages for them to finally put the tip in, it'll take 2-3 pages to put the whole thing in, they'll move a bit, and then be interrupted. She just needs to continue making cutesy-wutesy vanilla on-model starco at a page a week and people will throw money at her.

It was more the case back when in-browser VP8 codecs/players were still being implemented, they're stable now.

WebM support is good enough with Firefox and Chrome/Chromium that you can just right click and check/uncheck "Loop" if you want to enable/disable looping.

Looping for GIFs, on the other hand, is controlled by the image itself in the loopcount parameter. So to enable/disable looping for a GIF, you have to reencode it to change the loopcount parameter.

The ONLY downside of WebMs looping-wise is that for servers to set default looping behavior, they have to use the HTML <video> tag. So if you just browse a .webm URL, the video won't by default loop (right-clicking still works to enable/disable though). For .gif URLs, the browser will honor whatever setting is encoded in the image file.

The gist is that .gif URLs can loop by default, while .webm URLs cannot. Again, this isn't an issue for HTML URLs with embedded WebM files, e.g. 4chan threads, because those have <video> tags; it's only .webm URLs that have this issue.

The play bar is a godsend. It lets you scrub through a video and pause a video. It even lets you right-click and save the frame when you're paused. You can right-click to show/hide the bar as well.

Browsers don't let you do this with GIFs, so if you want that kind of functionality, you have to convert it to a different format.

The compression scheme used by GIF is LZW, a general-purpose data compression algorithm that is absolute garbage at compressing video. The algorithm basically looks for repeated subsequences in a stream of data, which practically never occurs in video unless you're working with clipart or video for which you've artificially reduced the color space. This is because the GIF format was standardized in the 80s (the latest revision being released in 1989), when video compression techniques were just starting to be explored:

This is true for WebMs and GIFs of the same size, and continues to hold for WebMs many times smaller.

What's more, because LZW is so bad at video compression, GIF encoders have resorted to using other "compression" techniques which include:
- reducing resolution of the video
- throwing away frames of the video to reduce framerate
- reducing the color space of the image (this is mandatory to an extent because each frame can have at most 256 different colors in it, and the blocking workaround for this presented in the 89a standard is unsupported by all major browsers because of issues with handling zero frame delay)
- introducing dither/noise to hide the banding caused by color space reduction
- allowing transparent pixels in frames that let the corresponding pixels from the previous frame show through, so you can store frame diffs instead of full frames (note that this is just transparent pixels; GIFs do not support alpha channels like PNG)

The first four techniques are complete shit. In particular, the first two just completely and uniformly throw data away (not caring to which information is more perceptible and which isn't), while the next two leave very visible artifacting throughout the entire image unless it's clipart with no gradients. Only the last one doesn't drastically reduce quality, and even then it's a very primitive form of motion compensation. It's not even really a frame diff either, you still have to store data for areas outside the diff, but using transparent pixels makes it more easily compressible by LZW.

These techniques pale in comparison to modern video compression techniques, which are designed to prioritize throwing away data that's less perceptible to the human eye (e.g. in fast motion scenes, gradients with dark colors). Just take a look at H.264's feature set if you want examples of modern techniques:

It's a lot worse than just "WebMs can have a higher framerate than GIFs". GIF max framerate/min frame delay is unstandardized and broken, just look at

Max reliable framerate is only 16 fps for GIFs. Anything higher gives glitches in browsers like IE and Safari, actually causing the framerate to drop to 10 fps. Even if we ignore those browsers, it maxs out at 50 fps, and still has the issue of defaulting to 10 fps instead of 50 fps if specified lower in the GIF file. NONE of the browsers handle zero frame delay correctly, which invalidates the workaround in standard 89a for getting past the 256-color maximum per frame.

Moreover, GIF frame delays are specified in increments of hundredths of a second, with no better precision. So you've got 0.02s (50 fps), 0.03s (33 fps), 0.04s (25 fps), 0.05s (20 fps), etc. There's NO way to make an exactly 30 fps video or 24 fps GIF. The only thing you can do is either estimate with a mix of different frame delays (which introduces frame judder), or motion interpolate, which is going to be shit since you can't even keep the original frames unless you happen to be increasing the framerate by an integer multiple (and even then, it's typically shit unless the motion is smooth and non-animated).

WebMs meanwhile have nanosecond precision per frame (see TimecodeScale in http://www.webmproject.org/docs/container/), and have no real format-imposed limits on framerate, making 60/120/240 fps possible (actual playback framerate and precision will of course depend on the media player software and playback device specs).

SvtFoE isn't just a series of clipart images, so again, a GIF would be shit here. There are gradients, which already means that you're going to run into the 256-color max, and will have to resort to color reduction and shitty dithering to hide the banding. The number of unique colors in the first frame alone are 26,015.

Pic related is to show just how bad that conversion to GIF is. The top-left is the original first frame, the top-right is the conversion to gif using imagemagick. The bottom-left is every place a color has been changed, and the bottom-right highlights the more visible artifacts. And keep in mind, the entire WebM is 50.4 KB. The first frame alone converted to a GIF is 111 KB.

Just because Glossaryck doesn't have a side doesn't mean that he doesn't have an agenda.

We know he's lied at least once before to motivate Star, in By the Book. early on he claimed Star hurt his feelings, then at the end of the episode he said he doesn't really have feelings. One of these was a lie. Either he's more human than he's willing to admit, or he's willing to pretend to be to achieve his goals. And of course, he's blatantly kept information from Marco more than once.

Either way, he's a devious bastard and very little he says can be taken at face value. Just because he has a job to do doesn't mean he isn't pursuing his own aims at the same time.

What I don't fully understand about Glossaryck is the reason for his loyalty to the Butterfly family. And make no mistake, he is loyal, even if he has certain obligations as a magic teacher. Why else would he be trying to make Star a queen rather than just teach her magic like he did with Ludo?

He has a plan and we've just begun to see it. However, it most certainly involves training Star to be a queen, and hooking her up with Marco as her king.

That's the only part of the analysis that didn't really sit well with me, because once one starts down the path of "well, they didn't really MEAN that," then, ah, one's ship has lost its anchor, so to speak. There isn't really anything that CAN'T be argued that way.

Anyway, my personal (boring) theory for what the Sea Captain is that that painting is just another bit of magical weirdness in Star's room: like she has a mermaid in a tank or a board game that makes miniature duplicates of its players or an extra pair of her legs kicking under her rug, she also has a sailor portrait that speaks ominously about the weather. (...and also seems to approve of Star and Marco together, to look at how it was looking at them in "Mr. Candle Cares," but still.)

The show still does too many off-the-wall, unaccountable things like that to make me think it's likely enough that there's greater significance to the painting sufficient to make me be willing to believe that, when Nefcy said "the voice was the Sea Captain," she really meant "the voice was Glossaryck." Could be more to it, of course, but right now that's where my Occam's Razor is pointing me.

I don't think Daron "Master of Puppets" Nefcy was lying, I just think she was being intentionally vague because she didn't want to give the plot away. That's not really unusual in that situation. It's not that she was telling us that the voice is really Glossaryck, she was saying she didn't want to (or wasn't allowed to) give a clear answer.

For what it's worth it seems to be the Glossaryck part of the analysis that people disagree with the most. I acknowledge that, but I stand by it. It's sort of weird, because I did a lot of other speculation that I considered far less solid, but hey.
