Fusions do kind of weird me out on a conceptual level. Fusions ARE people, yes? Like, sapient beings distinct from their components? So doesn't that mean un-fusing kills them? I guess you could argue that they still "exist" within their components, and when they fuse again their consciousness just starts up again right where it left off with the components' added memories since the last time.

But weirdly, fusing DOESN'T seem to result in ego death for the components, since we've seen Ruby and Sapphire argue while fused. Are there three consciousnesses in a fusion?

I don't know. I don't think the show's TV rating forbids showing deaths. We've certainly had a lot of deaths discussed by the characters, and Pearl, Garnet and Bismuth went out in fairly traumatic ways right in front of Steven.

They might need to play around it, like switching to a different view right before we see the shattering.

The first time Steven sees a gem shatter before his eyes will be a very powerful moment for him, and I can see the crew waiting to set up for a good time for that.

Aquamarine so far has been an extended subversion of Steven's philosophy wherin all the bad people are just good people with problems.

I don't think it will be part of this arc, but at some point later in the show she'll force Steven's hand and he'll have to shatter her (probably in order to save some or all of the gems/residents). It wont be something he'll have time to think about and it'll be a situation where he has absolutely no other choice.

Then we'll have an arc for Steven wherein he has to come to terms with and justify the action and is sad and afraid of his own power, probably involving him digging deeper into finding out why Rose (allegedly?) shattered PD.

I'm not 100%, but that's what aquamarine seems to be the catalyst for.
