I don't think Bendis is cucked at all. Aside from changing J'son for Ego, Gunn did the whole "father is an asshole royal" only instead of "wealthy royal" Ego is "space entity royal". Hell, the scenes on the palace almost resemble Bendis' Spartax palace.

And, as bad as Bendis did J'son, there's still depth on his carácter in the way of his conflicto between the man he used to be with Meredith and the man he is now. So, he wanted to burn away all of the mortal life in order to acquire enough energy to travel back to the genesis of the universe and make all life immortal, like him. But the one whose life empowered him to complete his plan did not agree with him, and - at the end - showed him exactly what mortality was. In his final moments, he realized the value of mortal life and regretted his plan and his decisions.

I like that the movie ended on Rocket cry. He's probably the most hard ass dude in the group, but the whole movie is about opening up to each other. I thought it was a great ending shot for that story, man

I loved it all. Just got out a few hours ago and can't wait to buy the DVD. Solid 9/10
