Trying to write a comedy comic that is rather story focused, but like in a random yet consistent way. I don't really know, it is its own thing I guess.
Constructive critisism is welcome, I would really like to know what I do wrong/right.

>If your comic couldn't be a comic, what medium would you use to tell it's story?
I'm making it a comic BECAUSE I would never be able to make it an animation
>>
>>92142800
I would love to do animation. My kind of dialogue works better spoken, anyway, and I"m always coming up with cool action
on the other hand, there's enough repetition for a videogame to be a great idea. That way a person's "signature thing" is what they do repeatedly in the game, but the player doesn't get bored. and it would still have hella dialogue.

>>

Yeah, I'm kind of drawing it without too much fuss. But glad you like it.
>>
>>92143028
This is just my personal opinion but changing well known names of brands is fucking retarded and annyoing. When I see another "facepage", "cherry phone" or "popsi cola" in comics, movies or whatever I get instantly pissed off.

Just call it tinder. No ones gonna sue you (companies don't give a fuck, it's free advertising) and no immersion is going to be broken. It just works better.

Also, Jess a cute but what's her motivation for online dating when she could just pick up any guy on the street?
>>
>>92143028
Look at a bunch of other goth waifus, decide one aspect of her design that will make her different, and start splicing together those designs with your unique spin in mind.

Perhaps you're right. Tinder probably wouldn't sue me but I still thought that I should play it safe. I don't think it's that big of a deal. Also, it's Cindy who is looking for a bf. Jess and Sharona are just "helping".

I guess I could talk about mine a bit...

I've been changing the storyline over and over as years have gone by, though to be fair each time it gets a little better as I get a little more experience with writing. Just saying, it's still a bit of a clusterfuck as I figure out what I really want out of it.

Concept revolves around a boy who goes through a fantasy world where people have the power to change both themselves and the world around them. The idea is that his emotional problems from the real world manifest themselves physically in the fantasy world, Psychonauts-style, and that by dealing with the problems in the fantasy world, he is in fact dealing with his own problems as well.

Typing it out now, it all seems so simple, but I have all these "visions" and details about that world that clutter up what should be a simple concept. I guess I just need to learn how to cut dead weight, even when I don't want to.
>>
>>92143596
Oh and to answer the thread question - it would definitely be a book if it weren't (or will be) a comic. Hell, half the time the writing I do when planning the story is detailed enough to be a book anyway.
>>
>>92143574
I'd suggest just coming up with an entirely different brand name then. At least then it's not so obvious what you're trying to do.

I think I posted this once in a previous thread that was about to expire, so not sure if anyone's seen it.

My art is crap. These storyboards are just intended to give a sense of what the chapter is supposed to look like. But it's hard to judge if it makes any sense to someone who doesn't see it all in his head...
1/2

Anon from one of the last threads here who's working on a concept for an adventure comic where the MC can control animals. The world this all takes place in is pretty much equivalent to early 80s society, so no internet or highly advanced commercial computers. Organized crime is under pressure from international agencies and there's strong telecomunication surveilance. So crime syndicates use carrier pigeons (among other mehtods) for communication.
In this chapter, MC raids a floating base for the carrier pigeon network and gains intel related to the murderers of his mentor.
MC works with a herd of killer whales to take out the criminals.
At first I wanted to use some extra pages to show how the pigeon network works: decription, encription, vetenary people for the birds, how gangsters send and receive messages and so on. But I decided it would hurt the pacing. Maybe I'll bring it up again in a later chapter.

Here's a new page of west tree. I'm posting this one again because I posted it right when the thread died.

Either way, I'm trying to change up Jack and Annabeth, Annabeth's personality is changing because it's actually part of the plot, and it's convinient for me because it calms Annabeth down and will make him less involved in part two of west tree, mainly because part two will be more about Sarah and Saudra part one is more about Jack, btw.

Either way, I'm changing up Jack a little bit because I'm really getting tired of his "Oh geez! I'm so nervous!" personality So I'm making him more calm, collected and witty.

Do you know who ONE is? Just had to get that out of the way first and say I really enjoy this concept and the fact it takes place in an 80's setting. The reason I referenced ONE was because this just really reminds me of MP100, the art style and base concept are similar but with enough of a difference to be enjoyable. Also Westerners don't read much manga so unless they are Chinese cartoon and comic enthusiasts they wont understand the similarities

That's kinda cool, what are the people controlling them like how did they get that ability? what's the world like? If you don't mind sharing.
>>
>>92144658
I've read all of Mob100 and OPM (as well as pretty much all acclaimed sci-fi manga that have proper releases). I don't see a lot of similarities though, I think it's mostly the crap art and the fact that there is also a crime syndicate in one of the later mob arcs I think?
If I had to point to any specific influence/inspiration I'd have to say Yoshihiro Togashi's works.
The only concrete similarity applies to any adventure manga that has some form of a battle system based on special abilities (and there are dozens of those in WSJ releases alone).

But again, I really enjoy ONE's stuff, so I'm flattered.
>>
>If your comic couldn't be a comic, what medium would you use to tell it's story?

I'm making the comic specifically to maybe have it animated one day. It'd work much better as a cartoon, but that's a shitload of work for one person (plus hiring voice actors)

I'll say it again: i'm surprised we dont have more "animated storyboard" type comic videos. like Reading Rainbow used to do just kinda panning across illustrations and providing voiceover. or like 'Ariel Needs Legs' shit. if I had just ine female friend to do voices, I'd do one. I should really see if i can just Hyadain my voice..
>>
>>92144188
I ditched an idea about chapter 8 where I revealed that Angel is only happy because she has a sercret stash of alcohol, but i felt that would make her a shitty character, so i ditched it.

I planned for Annabeth to have Multiple personality disorder, but that's a touchy subject, so I just went with Annabeth being possesed by different entities all the time.

I could do a whole book about stuff I deleted from west tree if I wanted too.

Or maybe a video series. I was actually planning on doing that, going back and talking about old chapters, like how that guy who makes Gunnerkrig Court does it.

I'd probably do like, one video per chapter.

Not at all.
The ability of controling animals is unique to MC. Abilities are formed through long mental and physical training and are based on past experience an emontional factors so there are no identical though sometimes similar abilities.
It's a basic rock-paper-scissor system with three types: 'Object' ability manifests as or through an object, 'body' ability re-shapes the body and 'direct' any ability not fitting the other two categories.
There are also some other super-human skills not related to this system like ESP and spriting (applying stasis to phsysical objects, very handy for combat)
There's a whole flashback arc dedicated to MC gaining his ability.

The world is mostly similar to 80s earth though there are some geological and zoological variations and the political landscape looks a lot different.
>>
>>92142800
I asked this in the last thread briefly before it got shut down so it couldn't get any replies so…I guess I'll repost it here;

Considering how poorly a lot of webcomics handle the topic; How do you write good romance? I have a few characters that I gradually want to put together (they'll be friends at first but the attraction between them would grow over a couple of volumes since I like slow buildup/burns in my romance)

I guess to simply it what turns you off to a romantic subplot in a webcomic and/or what actually gets you invested?

Also the rock-paper-scissors effect is almost negligible in actual combat, it only matters in matchups with identical strength.
>>
>>92145572
I think that would make her a fine, common character. perhaps too common. bit cliche. except it doesnt make you happy, quite the opposite.
I dont think the fictional version of multiple personality is touchy, given that even the real thing only tenuously exists.
>>
>>92146395
I cant think of any western comic, mostly because I'm a capeshit faggot, but there was an old Chinese comic called FMA that I think, while at first I'm not sure if it had a romantic subplot, did the ending with the protagonist and his love interest nicely. I guess the best advice I can give is don't make it a romance at first then, make it a subplot. Don't purposely put the characters for "muh development" but instead put them together in moments where it makes sense. And don't lewd it, that's asking for the romance to be given away

I tried to reply to you last thread but it was allready archived so I'm not going to write the whole thing again.

>>
>>92147200
The concepts seem interesting, but they look so rough right now it's hard to tell what the designs were actually going for. Are these supposed to be very geometric angels, and are you planning to draw them in a very flat and simple style? if so, cleaning up your linework would help a lot, maybe the addition of some color could help these designs shine a bit more too

I wanted to steal an Idea from /co/ from a while back about about a scary looking guy that kept accidentally doing shit that made people think he was a war criminal.

I also have a not very well thought out Cape universe that ended up being a lot like some other one so I think I'm mentally keeping myself from just doing fun little stories with it like I wanted. Not an ongoing.

The last one is a spin-off of my comic proper showing the first reoccurring villain's lives before ended up the villains. Basically the "villains are heroes of their own stories" in action.

I'm going to be frank, and you can disagree, but. Unless the romance specifically adds to the thematic elements or is a focus point, there's no reason for it. Romance is so complicated that, to be done right, it needs a lot of focus. If your characters are slicing and dicing aliens in some epic destiny quest, there just is not enough space in the narrative to do either justice imo.

So, I recently read Manhunter, and got inspired. Kate Spencer is a fucking train wreck, and yet, she's incredibly compelling. I want that. Fortunately, my group of heroines are already a bunch of assholes, so I think I'm on my way.

No, I agree with you 100%. I try to avoid romance unless it's important to the plot (which in my case it is because it leads to events and characters being made etc etc) as I usually find that sorta thing boring and not entertaining.
>>
>>92164912
No, Phil Fish wants to be the lovable jerk type, by goes way too far into genuine asshole. That, and he's a little bitch who gave up because the internet said mean things about him, abloo hoo.

Hm. Perhaps giving my gals a strong sense of integrity would help a lot. For example, it's easy to hate Richard Nixon, but also easy to respect him because for as much a jerk as he was, dude was willing and able get past some of his own bullshit to get shit done.
>>
>>92164719
That's a slippery slope there. You could always have the tsundere thing where their asshole facade covers the fact that they care a lot but don't want to be taken advantage of. Or you could have their jerkiness be relatable like why people enjoy "Harley Quinn". You really don't want to fall into the hotdiggetydemon, jhonen vasquez, ren & stimpy, catdog, etc thing where all of the characters are horrible assholes and it just gets grating and mean spirited. It works for really gag driven things but if you're trying to create genuine attachment to these characters it wont work.

DAMN, MAN! You're making me so jealous. I really tried to learn gesture with those websites that have you draw a new form every 30 seconds, but I just can't wrap my head around it. Tutorials say "follow the flow and don't fill in detail", but all I do is draw barely legible chicken-scratch stick figures that have more in common with tumbleweed than a human being. Pic related is something I did a few days ago, a character for a wizard mini-series I'm working on to get me used to drawing and composing comics. Without gesture she feels very stunted and stiff, and as far as posing's concerned I'm pretty much a slave to whatever google image reference I can find. Any help would be appreciated!

References and memes are bad substitutes for humor, as you are not using your own writing skill to develop funny interactions with your character, but relying on someone else to do so.

Let's discuss the difference between knockoff and inspired by.

I want to do a story about a species of alien robots who shapeshift into vehicles. You're already thinking "That doesn't sound familiar AT ALL!". Yeah, so how does one pull off a work that will draw inevitable comparisons to a well known property that has a similar concept?

First off, Hasbro can eat a fat dick, since they do not own the very idea of this, and Go-Bots did it first anyway. Second, I have much different, more SOL-ish ideas for it. And third, the whole reason I want to do it in the first place, is that Transformers has always been held back by the need to be about the war. Even in stories focusing on times where the war has stopped are ultimately about Bots VS Cons. Even fucking Beast Wars was about the Bot/Con war, even though that should be impossible.

My point is that "shape shifting alien robots" is an idea wasted on the same scenario repeated ad nauseum, so fuck it. Thoughts?
>>
>>92169868
I have the same problem too, except it was more of a coincidence for the similarities between my work and a lot of other comics.

Your work seems to be more of, not necessarily a deconstruction of, but more of a critique of the original work/a parody in a way. It is meant to use what we know in a genre and do something different with it.

Mine on the other hand seems to be an unintended mix between ATLA, SU, SvFE, and DW based on plot points, character backgrounds and scifi/magic themes. Stuff that I never watched until someone pointed out the similarities. Which pisses me off the more I read about the lore and characters

But to summarize

>the difference between knockoff and inspired by.

I think it more boils down to excution and intention.

No Rest for the Wicked has been my favorite for the past couple of years. It just had such a clear story, we knew what the motives were behind the characters and where they were going and what they were going to do. This is how you mix fairy tales, RWBY.

The humor usually isn't very witty or clever, and characters normally don't have any charm to me. The only yaoi/yuri webcomics I really like are from Old Tian (19 Tian, Their Story). Probably because the characters are more than just, "Look at me I'm cute, there's no way I could be sexual but let me sensually eat this conveniently shaped Popsicle," and "I look slightly manlier, and I love dick."

Nothing comes to mind in terms of overrated comics.

I would say you just need to find a gimmick that distinguishes your thing from their thing, while also not being overly concerned about ripping them off. You can have a series of sentient transforming robots, but they don't have to be from space. They could be remnants left behind by an ancient civilization who suddenly power 'on' for some unknown reason, or rogue AI who've escaped from a lab and are trying to evade capture from the government. You're exploring similar themes without directly bandwagoning off the concept. After that, your own different style of writing and storytelling should carry the series ahead on it's own two legs.

That's why I'm here right now.
Just keep at it Anon, a finished shitty drawing is better than a blank canvas. The fact that you can identify what's shitty about it just means that your eyes are developing a keen enough sense to discern what works and what doesn't. Just remember that you will legitimately never be satisfied, and anything you're happy with today will just look shitty to you 5 months from now if you keep progressing.

Pic related, the same character I drew 4 years ago vs last month, and the hair and shoulders of the recent one is already starting to bother me despite probably being the best face I've ever drawn. Keep at it, and remember that /co/'s cheering you on!

To be honest, their are only a few pages planned (7) and I planned on getting at least 1 chapter out with at least 20 to 30 pages. The process is slow because I tend to want to practice with anatomy, gestures, perspectives and etc. But it's all for the final result.

I really wanna make it stand out on its own as a comic that everyone can read.

I honestly don't care what something is inspired by as long as it's good. To give your own example, the "Aliens transforming into cars" makes for a cool sci-fi war series; but the same scenario could be used as a drama in which aliens learn about the lives of humans who drive them knowingly, or a sci-fi horror series.

My own comic draws heavily from fairy tales from all over

I used to have this problem with a lot of people comparing my mascot character Dupe to the gemini trolls from homestuck because of the red/blue coloration and association with video games. what I can tell you is that as long as you're bringing something genuinely new and creative to it then it's worthwhile. People will draw comparisons to what they already know no matter what but if you really make it into your own thing people will start to treat it as such. My advice is maybe go with less terrestrial vehicles. Bots Master had robot toys that turned into vehicles but the vehicles looked just as strange as the robots so it felt like it's own thing. Even if you are copying it then as long as you're doing something new with it then it's fine. Rebecca Sugar made a green square headed alien character in Steven Universe just to realize an arc she always wanted to happen in Invader Zim and people praise her for that despite how transparent it is.

>H-he's fast

Well, having dialogue during fight sences is kind of a catch22:

If you don't have the characters talk no one will get wtf is going on but if they do it comes across as comical or at least unnatural (no one says 'I punch you in the face.' while punching someone)

So battle manga resort to inner monologues, thus he trope. It's a pretty tricky problem from a writer's perspective...

I'll be sure to have the taxi sign glowing as well.

and >>92172819 don't be a dick about it, I've mentioned several times in the thread that a lot of my work is influenced by manga rather than comics, so of course my work is going to fall under the troupes of manga/shounen manga rather than comics.

first, shapeshifting and 'folding up into a different configuration using very few joints' are completely different concepts. the latter is intentionally toyetic. which I like.
secondly of course they don't own the idea of it, they've just done it the best. whenever a gundam has an altmode it looks crummy. of course that's much harder scifi so you have to make the whole machine still feel stable.
thirdly, why not rip off Diaclone instead? I always felt like it was a much more sensible story. Humans build vehicles that can unfold into battle machine platforms of various types, mostly humanoid but sometimes just a torso with a windshield cockpit where a head would go, in order to fight alien bug robots. it lets you sensibly have parts of the vehicles become other things besides just 'a guy' and it gives the disguise a legit purpose. you drive your convoy up so it looks normal, and your enemy thinks you could be anywhere so it's too scared to attack human civilization

I had this story about a girl falling into a coma after a traffic accident and then slipping into dreamland; she finds a small community of lucid dreamers in it and tries to figure out a way to wake up as she has no idea what happened other than the accident. Also, the antagonist is a fan of Stirner.

I wasn't content with any way to connect the dreams of the other people involved; watching Inception, Paprika, and Alien Nine back to back was a terrible idea.
>>
>>92176365
That sounds neat. Yeah there's no logical way to connect dreams given that they're just your brain going over the memories and concerns and shit you've had recently, and lucid ones are where you wake up and start conciously interacting with that process.
You could make it very-near-future scifi and have it be some kind of widespread machine that's put on coma patients' heads because it helps connect some broken neuron connections, but the things are online and monitoring their activity, so maybe it turns out they glitch and share the dreaming on the internet somehow... that's what I'd go with.
>>
>>92176365

I've got another comic idea on standby right now 'til I work out a bunch of plot kinks. I might have posted it here before.

It's about a teenage boy named Evan who doesn't know how or why, but can suddenly start seeing ghosts. He learns from a spirit living in the forest known as the Devil that this power is a curse coursing through his blood, and if not lifted it will soon kill him. The Devil once taught someone this curse before, a local doctor who was executed over a decade ago for murder. Though the doctor's body died, his spirit persisted by possessing living bodies to advance his schemes, and being the person who placed the curse he's the only one capable of lifting it. Evan teams up with Ruby, a girl wary of the Devil who could always see ghosts, to find the doctor's current host and force him to lift the curse.

He wasn't mentioned once during two years of philosophy class in senior high school. A lot of Kant, Nietzsche, some Hegel, Habermas and Adorno, no Stirner. So I stand by my statement.

On a rleated note, refernces to Germany in comics, mannga or really any kind of media end in disaster 90 percent of the time becuase of the tricky language.

LoGH even has several grammar errors in the fucking title of the show, that's pathetic. I had this vague fantasy of becoming a German fact-checker / proof-reader in the Japanese anime industry as a teen...

If all your punchlines are "I'm making a reference!" then that's bad; you really should avoid doing that.

However, as background gags and cameos, I'm all for it; they're extras, not the main joke. Ideally a gag should work on it's own, with the inclusion of a meme or reference bringing a further dimension to the gag, so it's still understandable to someone who doesn't spot the reference. Darmok slipping on a banana is funny, but it can be funnier to someone who recognises they're at Tanagra and it was Jalak who dropped the peel.

In >>92168221 the Jojo/Dio gag is a poster in the background of panel 1, and that's fine, especially if no one calls attention to it in the dialogue. If it was the sole punchline to the end of a page, there'd have to be some pretty clever build up to justify it.
>>
Just wanted to ask if someone has seen something similar to this or, better yet, if you might have some ideas or expectations of what could come from this.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out a good character dynamic for the protagonists of a comedy about girls forming a rock band.

>the bassist and protagonist is a know-it-all newbie getting into playing an instrument for the first time in her life and trying to be all hipstery and cool but failing because of an obvious lack of knowledge. she has a hard time finding people when she wants to form a band because of her lack of focus and unearned elitism

>the drummer (sometimes keyboard player) and composer is a well-known ace musician on her local scene but reviled for her horrible personality and demanding, strict attitude towards music which got her kicked from every band and group

>the guitarist is decently talented in classical guitar but is often kicked out of groups for being a dumbass that always helps bring out the worst in whoever she is around by being a chronic enabler and ruining one or two members

Basically, the bassist and drummer end up together by the drummer's will out of necessity and the guitarist is just dragged into it and has no issue with it.
I'm thinking of making the story about some battle of the bands kind of thing but also make it feel like a tournament arc at some point.

Also, is /x/ or /tg/ a good place to ask for tarot-related shit? Not for this one, but I'm designing characters based on the major arcana and I wanted feedback on those once I was finished with some.

I can tell you this, I'd switch them around a bit. You're under no obligation to follow the cliche, but it's usually the drummer who's a hipster who wants to form a band, the guitarist who's an ace (or terrible) with ambition but major personality problems that mess up their friends, and the bassist who's quiet and skilled but simple, bad at improving, and kinda not helping when situations get weird. it's band tradition!
in any case, it sounds like you have most of it down. The basic rule for trios follows the three stooges formula
>the moe can boss around the others, but is too driven to see that he's about to go off a cliff
>the curly can strongarm the larry but is too dumb to understand what going off a cliff will entail, and is too loyal to moe, even if he's technically factually aware it will happen
>the larry is sensible enough to understand what's going wrong but lacks the capability to take command from the curly nor the spine to tell the moe no
the Belcher kids have the same basic thing going.

Yeah. I dropped it some time ago and I've been having some issues recalling shit lately but IIRC his role was to put her means of waking up and coping with her situation into question. Some of the other lucid dreamers were using the place to become inspired or to win time to vigil and attempt enlightenment or advance their studies but they kind of got in the way.
I was just getting half-way into Stirner's book when I gave up with the dreamlands' "magic system" so I could be completely spooking him up by accident.

I have a characer who's ability is a tarot deck.
The ability is called 'finite set', it's an ability-distribution system with the individual cards acting as surrogates. If used correctly it can predict future events.
The character rises to power in a secret society through his fortune telling but in a massive twist he kills them all off by distributing the ability costs among them.

I'm surprised how rarely you see tarot cards in fantasy settings...

Adorno is pretty entertaining to read. He's a raging leftist though so he'll never be popular around these parts. I don't go to /lit/ a lot but I assume the /pol/ influences are as strong as any other board.

Habermas' whole philosophy on a hugbox-concept.

Hegel is semantics and a lot of mumbojumbo.

Interesting shots in a few panels, I like the compositions of panels 1 and 2. You should darken your shadows and contrast your values some more in general. In some panels characters are the near same value as the background, like panels 3,4,7,8. Since your shading is so light it doesn't add much depth or lighting to your characters, you could either darken up those shadows a lot or forego shading all together.

No? The only thing more "aesthetic" about a human figure with a vertical speechbubble is that the two shapes balance each other out, but that's not the only balanced square panel layout. Just using the rule of thirds there are plenty of square compositions to create and play with.

I think that references are best if they're partially used as an education tool. You reference something of worth that people might have never heard of and it inspires them to look into it. It also flatters the audience by assuming the best of their education.

On the flipside, many would see this as the author masturbating about how well-versed they are, so tread carefully.
>>
>>92179904
A reference only works when the readers knows what is reffered to. That's why we call it reference.

>>
>>92181564
didn't they at least tell you? kinda unprofessional of them
>>
>>92182513
I'm assuming you posted that to get some critique, but I apologize if not

First thing to jump out is chubby wrist. I don't know what a cankle is called when it's the wrist, but you've got that going on there. In the full body picture, her left arm is very, very disproportionate. She looks part gorilla. It's both too long and too thick - especially her forearm. It's like she built up muscle in her forearm while her upper arm atrophied somehow. It's especially jarring when contrasted with the legs. It looks like you planned on giving her assymetrical armor guarding her left arm but you left the silhouette of armor without actually putting the armor on if that makes sense.

Her eyes are either a bit too far apart or it's just their shape making them look that way too far apart, but she's dangerously close to down syndrome.

And take this as either a critique or a compliment depending on what you're going for, but she looks VERY Pokemon inspired. Give that to me outside a webcomic thread and I'd swear up and down that she was a Pokemon trainer.

Now for positives - the general shapes of the body and parts are good even if the proportions are off. bending toes with the sock is just about flawless - you have feet down at the very least. The head and hair design are nice, but I think that hairline and style is screaming for a headband or goggles or something on her forehead. And the outfit is simplistic yet unique. She looks a hair derivative, but I can't think of what she's derivative of, so I think it's just using existing pieces in a new way. Vaguely reminiscent of Kat from Gravity Rush for some reason. I see a lot of designs that go too heavy on detail that would be hard to show and a pain to draw in a comic format, but that looks like the perfect balance between too detailed and boring blob. Lots of non-essential details that could be skipped in long shots, but added to in close ups, like the fray on her shorts, which can be very useful in paneling.

I didn't actually post it so much for critiquing purposes as just to get the idea going, but I appreciate the feedback. Although it's an older piece I have a lot of these same problems with my newer stuff as well. Well if you want some critique on that, you should start bucking down and looking into basic muscle anatomy. Hope you don't mind my shitty redlines/redraws.

1. Those legs are very flat and lacking in muscle definition, even for a very thin person. I see you've got some understanding of the shapes of the legs beyond just tubes, now go deeper than that. Pay even closer attention to how the shape of the legs change as they move and rotate, read up on constructive anatomy. The feet additionally look small and the butt is rather low.

2. I don't know if the forearm is supposed to look very long or if it's supposed to be foreshortened. Either way, the forearm muscles are very misplaced. Not to get deep into anatomy, the bulk of the forearm muscles are located closer to the elbow than the wrist.

3. Cute face, but there's a lack of planning in the drawing that hinders it. Look into how to draw real human faces, as a lot of the methods you learn there can also be applied to anime styled faces. Here, the girl's face looks a bit lopsided, and here eyes look like they aren't actually attached to the face. Thin of faces as 3D objects, eyes will sit IN them and AROUND them rather that just sitting on top of the face. The Loomis method for drawing heads can be easily modified for drawing anime styled faces, here's a useful tutorial on it

>On a side note does anyone have tips on conveying motion on a character with no flappy hair or clothes?
Gesture studies and line of action, my man. Before you plot out an action pose, plot out the line of action. The more forceful the pose, the tighter the curve in the line of action. I can see a line of action in that pose, but the line is rather weak for an action pose. The curves in the line are softer, and the curve makes an overall S shape. S shaped lines of action have less energy than C shaped lines, an S shape conveys two, smaller motions while a C conveys one, large, powerful motion.

>Oh man, gesture studies. I've been working at it all day with no progress and no idea what to do.
How long do you usually take to draw each gesture study? Pushing yourself to go faster and faster often helps, as well as focusing on curves. You should try reading Hampton's Figure Drawing and Force: Life Drawing for Animators.
>>
>>92185185
I try to do the 30 second thing, but I honestly feel like rushing is what's holding me back since the forms I end up with don't even passingly resemble the reference I'm drawing.
>>
>>92185335
In gesture they're not supposed to look like the reference but capture the movement of the model.
>>
>>92186180
That explains what I'm doing wrong. when I see a pose reference I think of it as a statue and try to copy it
>>
>>92183954
>>92184786
>>92185123
The problem is not the shape, but the balloon outline. The traditional inking is so charming it makes the digital 1 pixel line kinda unpleasant to look at.
That said, don't bother trying to change it if you don't have a good hand or the time for drawing consistent balloons individually, it's not that bad.
>>
>>92186180
But how does that work? How am I supposed to draw a model/character without drawing the character? It's esoteric stuff like this that goes right over my head.
>>
>>92189719
by just drawing the basics of the body, or even a different body's basics but in the same basic pose.

Looks like her center of balance is off but I can't quite figure out why. Her head is weirdly disproportionately large compared to her body and her arms are small compared to her head. It kinda looks like she's half midget for lack of a better analogy. Her torso is passable but her ribcage appears to be massive, like it's almost cube shaped. Her knees also look really small but I can't tell if that's because it's a sketch or an actual mistake. I'd reccommend just practicing anatomy more, figure construction from imagination specifically. Work on really solid skeletal anatomy, in fact just draw skeletons a lot.

It's been so long, I guess people forgot or didn't even know about it.
Long story short, I made a /hyw/ crossover, and liked it, so I asked if anyone else was willing to let me use their OC to do more, and ColdFusion was among the people that bandwagoned.
I promised myself I was going to finish before finishing my webcomic, so I'm trying to get this outta the way now.
BTW, ColdFusion, I fucking hate you. you and those hyper saturated colours you use. I can't begin to describe how much they are making my head hurt when I'm painting these.
>>
>>92195088
>a /hyw/ crossover

How have I never heard of this, I've been coming to these generals for at least two years.
That's fucking awesome! Got a link?

Are there characters from West Tree?
>>
>>92195137
>How have I never heard of this, I've been coming to these generals for at least two years.
I dunno, I offered last year, and only three or four to join.

>Got a link?
Hmm, they're as side chapters on my main webcomic site, so I don't have a dedicated site for that.
>Are there characters from West Tree?
There was one because Dewd was among those who joined, but only featured Sora. Lost the original sheets, and for some reason I don't have the full size bitmap on my computer, so I cannot colour that one until I find either the original paper sheets or the bitmap scans.

The only ones I made were from Monsterous Mimi, Miss Melee, Stones of Anarchy, West Tree and Kiwi Day N. I wanted to make one with Vigor Mortis, but the author didn't say anything and I was afraid of doing it without permission ;_;

Determine where your light source is, because I can't tell; loose the grey in the second panel and replace it with hard black. Find some shadows in the other panels and lay down some more had black.
Heavy ink styles require a kind of fearlessness. Cultivate that.
Leave the greytones alone for awhile.

Dupe your using turbine engines for the taxi right? If so... thise engines will explode or not function to their full potential.

Turbines are like wind tunnels that need both sides to be clear of debris or obstruction, or else disaster is afoot.
Recommend relocating thise engines, like keeping the shape but have two or so turbines near the front of the vechile on the sides.

And an alternate. I had an idea of having her change colors depending on the season, so wanted to try something "Mushroom Hill Zone"esque.

One thing I've been thinking about lately, is whether or not I should make a font for the comic or keep it entirely hand written. It'd probably save me some time having a premade font, but I dunno, I feel like it might take some charm away? Maybe I'm overthinking it, it'd probably be worth it in the end.

DESU I dunno what they are. I just draw stuff that looks cool and tried to make it look like the mix between a jet engine and a shark. One could also argue that those alien characters are biologically impossible since their eyes would take up basically their entire skull. It's a cartoon.

Not trying to throw away critique but I'm avidly straying from reality for this project since I'm sick of recent sci-fi just going for "realism". This is no more realism based than Spy Kids, Tron, Flubber or the Super Mario Bros movie. I usually get my inspiration for spaceships from lego sets anyway so it's more about rule of cool than any practicality.

>>92207347
I like this design and style. It gives off a lot of character. I personally feel like her face should be darkened though due to her shady hat and hair. Maybe keep the tone of her eyes the same to make it spookier. Assuming this is a spooky character of course.

I've always liked more to change things around. I doubt anyone would be interested in another take on the traditional dysfunctional band when I myself am not interested in it.

What problems are you having with paneling?

Try starting with a regular 6 or 8 panel grid. While not fancy, it's a baseline steady beat for the strip's pacing, leaving you to focus on what's going into the panels.
Similarly, the 3 and 4 panel newspaper strip.

The 9 panel grid has its own set of challenges, as all the panels are narrow verticals.

Is still on the works. I barely made one or two pages after the last update, but since for the most part the reception here wasn't great, I never posted them. Not that I care about negative reception if I can get feedback I could use to improve on it, but it was evident that it is the subject and the way I approach them what people didn't like, so I decided not to bother anyone with it anymore.
In hindsight, tho, I don't have the slightest idea who could be a potential target audience I can pitch that comic to, so I'm not even sure why I'm still working on it.

I'll try to get a colour page done today, so I can you lot some feedback.

A simple way to practice lettering is just to write out the alphabet over and over again. You'll be aiming to keep all the letters the same size, and on the same level (so avoid using lined paper). Take each letter carefully; think of it as "drawing" the letter form instead of "writing" it, if you can see what I mean. Lettering, as with drawing, is just down to practice.

I'll excuse them having 1 eye... depth perception is for primitive life anyway."

They can't really go more than 30 feet away from each other without experiencing tremendous adverse mental effects. They are technically one person it's just that each one has half of the brain, they even function as one pair of eyes always looking in sync. They were engineered as a novelty to attract the attention of the press and reality TV shows but when that proved unfruitful they were like circus clowns out of a job who couldn't wash off their makeup. I'm not even sure they have any kind of biological gender, and their violent tendencies make it kinda hard to say how seducing them would go. Anyone can feel free to waifu them though.

Here's a really old outdated drawing of one of them before I had even really started this whole comic thing. I'll try and do some new ones soon.

The only way you'll really learn what you want out of your paneling is to study other comics. Look at comics you like and comics you hate, take out a sheet of paper and write down what you notice about the pages. What panels are big? What panels are small? How do they fall in sequence, and how does that help convey information or motion? What kinds of panels are used for what angles and actions?

Okay, so I finally went and made a website to put my comic on. Mind giving some feedback on the first 8 pages and the site design?

I know the art isn't super great, so some pointers there would be good as well. The comic is about a conspiracy theorist/career criminal and his cohorts uncovering and trying to bring down a cult that uses "nazi science" style human experiments to give their members powers. The main characters figure out how to use these powers for themselves. None of the powers are going to be very cape tier, for example, the MC is only going to get the power to shock people on touch or from very short distances (although I may amplify the powers as the comic continues)

I've sent it to my friends but they're my friends and don't actually give me critique beyond "that's pretty good anon". My primary worry is that it might be hard to tell what's happening. I know what's going on as the artist, but I'm not sure if I'm conveying it effectively.

Here's a link

A man and a woman find themselves inside a box. It's just a box, a really big box. There's no way out of the box, it's a really hot and steamy box, and the box is full of sexual tension. And then, the main antagonist is introduced, who thinks out of the box, and his way of thought directly conflicts with the main protagonists' way of thought, which is inside the box, which causes a plot to happen. Then, in the pulse-pounding finale, I get drunk and fuck your mom.

>>
>>92237692
considering how huge your pages are, direct linking to the image is totally unnecessary and quite unwelcome. people want to be able to click on the image and see the next page
people would also like if either the root url or some other bookmarkable page always shows the most recent page

The art's wonky, which you can work on as you go, but the main issue for me is that I'm not getting much personality off of either of the characters. They look kind of bland, they're speaking pretty plainly about all of this (maybe make them a bit more private about it in public?), and their settings/fashions don't really communicate anything about them to make me interested in them off the bat.

Also, she was the one texting him that SHE told him about the cult and the item they're planning on stealing, so why does she show up and ask HIM what the deal is? Why does he know about it while she doesn't when she's the one pitching the heist? She says she just found out where it is, but then he's the one who pulled the location up before she got there when the text conversation left off with "see you in 15". You're clearly using the characters to dump exposition right now, which is fine, but keep who knows what consistent.

>>
>>92237979
Okay, my friend actually ponted out the texting thing was confusing. The dude (X) is the one texting that he found out about the location, I might go back and edit the page to make that a little more clear.

Def. need to work on characterization a bit more, hopefully the next few pages where they actually start doing stuff will help with that once you can see a bit more of their actions and mannerisms.

Good critiques though, I'll keep in mind all of that for the future.

Oh, I see what you were going for now. I should have figured based on the text locations, but it really looked like he was surprised he received a text, he checked the text, etc. You should redo the first page: show him surprised, maybe a panel of him looking more intently at the screen, then show his phone with the keyboard up and his thumb actively typing out the second message, with at least "found something" visible. Also, make his monitor illuminate just a LITTLE more of the room and add some details that give us a hint about the guy. Is he making serious bank off of these jobs? Is he in these jobs primarily for the money, or is it mostly to target baddies?

Also, the vagueness of the heist is kind of... who's going to go on a heist with the only specification being "there's some vague object that's vaguely valuable"? Is there a dollar amount to it, or if its "value" is that it grants powers, does he know it does that? Why didn't he tell her about that? How would he even know what to look for? I get that you're intentionally leaving it vague because you want it to be a surprise, but you need to handle it better in-story. And maybe be specific about how he found out about it, like maybe she confirms his source and he alludes to whatever deep-web fuckery he did to find out about it.
>>
>>92238724
Yeah what this guy said, this comic could be better paced by just adding alittle more detail like extra panels showing more actions and what not. And that cult sign is sooooo generic dude cmon (maybe it's for a reason). I mean overall this needs a lot of work. your friends are being nice, next time come to us first.
>>
>>92239176
There's some level of camp factor that the characters will be commenting on throughout. Something along the lines of "Seriously, more pentagrams?"

But yeah. I'm at least gonna redo the first page, and focus on the advice I've been given here going forward.

I've got it in my head that the Spiders are all pompous and narcissistic, and every single one of them are a member of some obscure royal family and every single one of them has a massive title like "Supreme Lady, Imperial Grand Dame" or "High Over-Duke of Justice"

I wan't them to spend a lot of time honouring traditions and worshiping some kind of god(s). Not sure if I want them to have a pantheon of spiders, or to worship the humans in some way, or to have them just worship themselves/their ancestors or what.

Worshiping the humans would probably help hook it in to some kind of story.

What was your goal in creating a comic? Did you just want to make money on it? Is it a story you've been dying to tell? Do you just want people to see your work?

If the first, just break it off. Comics aren't everything, and they're hardly the best/easiest way to make money.
If the second, you can put less effort in. It doesn't have to be something you're invested in the quality of - you can shift to the equivalent of stick-figures if you're just concerned with finishing the story off. You might benefit from a lack of caring about the art an increased focus on what you love about the writing.
If the third: 1) an excess of MINDFUL drawing practice, with as much critique as your little heart can take, and 2) shill, draw fanart, offer rule 34, etc.

Mostly because i took a long time to decide on what story i wanted to draw, so i decided to just go with the flow this time.

Everything right now is being work on, Mostly Sketched pages (11 right now), Plan is to make 20-30 page comics. And to get proficient enough to make this goal every 2 weeks or so.

Working on the layouts for the vampire arc in my comic atm.

I haven't really decided yet if I want it to be a self-contained 30-40 page chapter or 3-4 chapters with changing locations.

I'm doing the 'short version' for now and this really got me thinking about pacing and page count. Sometimes I feel I'm introducing characters too quickly and changing locations too often but when I try to slow the pace the panel count decreases and the story doesn't flow correctly. I also want the characters to have a strong relationship and mutual trust which is really hard to convey when the scene is the first time they are ever shown and the reader doesn't know their background...

I worked it around for a while and I think I'll split it like this.

(Pic related) pages 1-5: The vampire story opens on a farm, all the cattle and farmers are killed, 1 girl is the only survivor.

Page 12-17: the hunters meet the village council and find that the town is divided and isolated, they are offered to stay at a the town inn for the night.

Page 18-28: vampire drones attack, the village centre collapses into an underground cavern system (vampire hive). The hunters retreat undergound, explore and confront the vampire

28-35: confrontation and conclusion

36-39: epilogue

The left page is the basic vampire design, I think I posted a more detailed version before.
I'd love to hear some comments (not on the art of course which is obviously incromprehensible crap) but on the story and the flow of the chapter. Thanks in advance.

Start small, ~20 pages for a complete story is actually fairly short, it would be a good starting place. 4 panel strips are more for comedy.
If you want to get ideas, start consuming stuff. Look at art, photos, read news stories, comics, watch movies, TV, listen to music, etc. Don't be afraid to steal snippet's of other people's stories, maybe try taking the premise of a story you didn't like and try rewriting it to suit your own tastes.
Art style doesn't matter so much as art quality, if you know what you're doing you can make any art style look good, but if you're bad at art most styles will look unappealing. If you're a beginner artist, start practicing your art fundamentals

I like your new site!!!
and your art's definitely improving. just keep an eye open for things like ears being too far forward sometimes

At this point I might as well keep it so I can make a joke later about how everyone things his name is Corjander, which is something my readership seems to be making into a thing

thank you! and yeah I have problems with ear placements because of the round face shape I do for all the characters, I'm fixing that though for once i start the next chapter so I can get rid of my same face

woohoo, in-jokes!
>>

at least it's a nice face
and i'm already seeing variation here, curlyhairedgirl has a flatter face, snaky has a subtle flat nose, and the gold-haired girl has a pointy chin and some kinda high eyes. Not quite sameface.

You think that's bad, Chapter 3 takes place inside a Spider Forest.

An anime-esque OP with a song that subtly highlights the themes in the comic instead of the plot outright.
I'd want the ED to be really cheery only so it can be out of place as fuck whenever something intense happens and gets left on a cliffhanger.

Wonderful explosion ,great colors, and I see we both have a similar frog girl design (the head mostly).

If I could say anything, and please take this opinion with a grain of salt. Maybe add dust flying toward the spectators in panel 1 and possibly have debris still falling in the last panel...

Completely unnecessary but could add aa bit of flare.
