There wasn't all that much Cap/Zemo shipping in Secret Empire beyond them being confirmed Hydra bros who stick up for each other. That issue did feel significantly faster and better paced than either of the Cap comics Spencer was writing previously though. Do Marvel editorial only pay attention to events?

It didn't work here because the text is telling you what the page is already telling you in almost every instance, but worse. You cannot possibly compare this Black Bolt #1 issue to Moore who knows extremely well, like knows-the-most-in-Western-comics-maybe, what's important to show in art vs. writing. Sandman does trip out on its words alongside visuals sometimes, sure. And Sin City can do that too but mostly in a "this is a psychoactive city made entirely of hardboiled noir" way that adds to the text.

The majority of the text in the first half of the Black Bolt issue is unnecessary. It's only when people actually start talking that the text on the page feels like it's mostly adding instead of taking away. You're telling me to read stuff that in all likelihood I have already read; doesn't change my opinion of BB #1.

There's some intense discussion in operatic theory about the relationship of words and music and the "doing the same thing" idea versus the contrast. It gets entertaining when you get someone like Pierre Boulez who adores Berg's Lulu beyond measure, but cannot cope with the fact that the actions in the opera are exactly timed to the music

If you pick up a comic by a good artist who is a capable storyteller, you will find this to be the case. Shit you can look at TDKR and see this. Comics are never as simple as "remove words here because art is already conveying everything." There's a rhythmic pattern to Words, combined with good storytelling by the artist is what makes a harmonious comic book. No part in that perfect synergy is a thing a bit more or less. This is why overwritten for the most part is a meme criticism.

>I am not saying every comic is overwritten, which seems to be your basis for dismissing that any comic is.
I mean how would you define it other than Stan Lee, Claremont and Williamson obviously writing because of their self indulgence. Do we quantify it by the amount of words covering the panel or amount of words in a normal sized comic or by the weight of the word. First one can easily be defined by the objectivity of the impression, second falls in the category of subjectivity. And once something easily crosses the lines of personal subjectivity, the meaning behind the meaningful criticism is nullified.

Walk into room or open space, every barrier or wall is exactly three feet tall and perfectly parallel or perpendicular to all the rest, enemies suddenly come in from the other side, now you both hide behind the three foot walls popping up and down to play whack-a-mole with the enemies.

I feel like the context in which Stan Lee or Chris Claremont were churning out their wordy issues was very different to the Black Bolt issue we just got today. There was a lot more content to put in which necessitates handling it differently. In this issue there was not a lot of content, you could have done it in a few pages if pushed, and I have no problem with drawing things out (words or art) for atmosphere but again, in this instance I felt like the words on the page were mostly a negative. They didn't add anything, they took you away from the art which was doing it better: it felt like a idiot's guide to the events in the comic currently unfolding before you rather than something done to deliberate effect.

This isn't a hill I'm gonna die on and I'm not really gonna argue this out any more; I don't care if you reject my opinion of the book because it's subjective. That's entirely agreeable to me. I don't think subjective criticism is meaningless if the arguments can be presented, myself.

Fair enough. On the same note Moore did propose that 35 words was the maximum limit for him that he was willing to put on a single panel and in a scholar related article I read that critics did agree with his assessment.
Also it needs to be noted that people do believe that Lee/Claremont works have aged a lot. People who go back to them now like their work for the plots and character work, but those books are very much overwritten. Context doesn't absolve them of that.

With Lee you remember that in the Silver Age comics were still targeting younger readers, despite modern claims that they were writing for the older crowd, so typically you have the same information repeated in both the writing and the art.

The Bronze Age was really wordy, I can see why people get turned off from Claremont, Starlin, or Gerber. Claremont does improve around the time New Mutants starts and Brood War was going on in Uncanny. It's the Cockrum and Byrne issues that are the wordiest.

The biggest tragedy for me are those old EC comics, there is some gorgeous classic art in there, but it's often buried by the overwritten text
