What's really a bummer is that they set up a huge army being confined down to a narrow walkway up a mountain, reducing their numbers to be realistically fought ala 300. Ashi taking them out like that or using sneaky tricks to whittle down their numbers would have been fun to watch.

what is drama? The battle in the third chapter was an introduction to aku's world, it was used to showcase the extent of his power and was the focus of the entire chapter.
This battle was used to give ashi something to do while jack had his journey and to show how commited she is to his side.

Some people are mad that the ending to Jack's story heavily involves a character that was only newly introduced, and that the show has shifted from Jack being a Mad Max figure who just wanders around aimlessly helping people to a more character-driven story with actual supporting characters. In that sense the season is disappointing to some viewers because a large chunk of time is being used to established and develop something they don't care about, and when they've been waiting for this finale for over a decade that's a problem. It helps that the character is blatantly being set up as a romantic interest and has waifu qualities, making her shitposting bait too.

But Ashi is both a good character and a necessary character. As a traveling companion she gives Jack someone to actually interact with, which is useful in this season since otherwise we'd just have 7 episodes of Jack arguing with his hallucinations whenever dialogue was needed. As a new girl she offers a good excuse to do exposition and recapping, not just for the timeskip but for new viewers and viewers who haven't watched the original since they were children. Her journey is a darker parallel of Jack's own journey, so she has good chemistry with him and it makes it believable that they'd find some stability through each other. Episode 6 was fantastic and had tons of nice nods to the older show, and wouldn't exist without her since it requires a character who can view Jack as a mysterious stranger.

The show does have some pacing problems, notably the last one, which might not have been as bad had they stuck to simply Jack's story and not juggled two at once. But what she brings to the show is excellent and I'd argue the season is a lot stronger for it, so the trade-off is worthwhile. Not to mention some elements were always going to be rushed regardless since they have to wrap this whole series up in 10 episodes, had they been given 2 or 3 more this would have been a non-issue.

The season has been entirely about how Jack felt the quest useless, all hope lost. Ashi is the embodiment of what Jack actually was. He's hope. Through his efforts, enemies became friends, friends became allies, and even someone like the Scotsman can grow an army to fight Aku. All because of Jack.

Ashi is a character closest to Aku's influence with the small glimmer of hope in her unable to be snuffed out. It's due to Jack that she is able to shed that influence over her life.

Could the message have been made a different way? Sure. But the way they're doing it is perfectly fine.

Jack and the Monks, I remember it pretty well. And should I remind you that he wasn't going after a portal in that particular episode. He was climbing a mountain for the sake of climbing a fucking mountain. There was no portal nor nothing up there, just for the satisfaction of accomplishment because Jack had just lost another time portal at the very beginning of the episode.
He still had the sword, he still had other portals to seek. The whole conflict of that episode was Jack using the top of the mountain as a way to cope with failure and remind himself that he could still succeed in his mission.

I think maybe a better solution would be to get Ashi out of the picture straight after she attacks Jack (he ties her up and leaves her in the snow), then we have three episodes that are split between Jack doing soul-searching and making tea, and Ashi learning the truth about Aku.At the fourth episode and refuses to leave him, which he reluctantly accepts. They bond over episode 8, and fight Aku in episodes 9 and 10.

Her redemption arc is a bit more subjective. I liked it alright. I won't deny that I would have liked seeing it last longer if there had been more episodes for for what we've got it's decent.

Was I wrong about the first paragraph? Virtually every complaint I've seen about Ashi that wasn't worthless "she's a Mary Sue and overpowered" bullshit come down to how she's been eating screen time. It's the crux of the argument against her inclusion in the final season, since it takes time away from the main character.

My argument is less about Ashi being an interesting character on her own and more about how she's mostly being used to recontextualize Jack. All her dedicated episodes revolve around him, his exploits, his past and what he's brought to Aku's world. She's there so the audience can see Jack's development through the perspective of another character while he was deep into suicidal depression and had given up on his journey. She fulfills that role perfectly well, and it's hardly taking away from Jack's story when her narrative purpose is to elaborate on Jack's story.

The Scotsman couldn't do it, he's already good pals with Jack. Random villagers he's helped like the emoji dog girl couldn't do it, it had to be someone who didn't initially see Jack as a hero for his redemption speech to have any weight.

I'm sorry if my posts come off as shallow. I only watched through the show this Friday so I'm still developing my thoughts on it.

Jack was always a one-dimensional pulp character, the "deepest" the show ever got into his character was some fairly conventional "Confront your internal darkness" reflection stuff. Beyond that he incredibly one-dimensional, even with the (welcome)darkness the mini-series has pulled out for the final arc Jack can't support the kind of internal arc some of /co/ wants.

You might as well complain about Kino's Journey or Mad Max not focusing on their leads enough. These kind of "travelogue" stories always have intentionally simple leads to better show off the stories of the week.

Jack on his own can't support 10 episodes of reflection on his own, that's just not the character that was created. If it wasn't Ashi it would have have been someone else, or two episodes devoted to his internal arc and a bunch of one-offs until the finale.

Also this whole season has been sucking Jack's dick about how important and awesome and influential he is.

I wouldn't mind Jack getting a buddy so he's not alone anymore and has someone to have interactions with, but ATLEAST make her fucking interesting and have the buildup to say friendship be better paced.
She's such a non-character and, I'd really hate to say it, also obvious 'waifubait' that causes a even bigger sense of indifference to her character.

Genndy needed to give the show way more episodes if he ever dreamed of making Ashi a more engaging character then what we have at the moment.

I feel the episode would have been a little better if they had cut out the high priestess, made the orcs tougher and ashi's part shorter, making brief cuts from jack's journey to show her fighting waves orcs in the bottleneck, slowly retreated up the mountain as she gradually gets overwhelmed by their numbers. The battle should have ended at the top of the mountain, with ashi collapsing from exhaustion or being knocked out and jack coming back with the sword and saving her at the last moment.

Also, ashi should have been more timid and afraid of the high priestess. Given that she tormented all her life, her mother should still have some sort of hold over her.

Finally, jack's victory over his self was too easy. It should have been more drawn out and maybe featured the other jacks. The gods' scene was also too quick, they should have at least said something about his journey or his father, or alternatively, leave the gods out and have one of their priests hand him the sword without saying anything.
